Mac HD seems to be at capacity but there is another drive . .
Ive been given a Mac pc 10.4
on the desktop two hard drives show
one labelled Mac HD
the other withe surname of previous owner
disk utilities shows mac hd capacity as 76.2GB / available 447.3MB / used 75.77gb
the other drive (Case) has capacity 149.04gb / available 128.87 gb / used 20,17 on disk
Drop box tells me "cant sync .. not enough free disk space"
how do i access the HD "Case" ..... or do you think that is an external drive?
im not sure of opeating system .. where do i find rthat?
Mac HD info says OS X Extended .. is that it?
The icons for the disks that appear on the disktop Are they both grey like this
Or is one like one of these:
If they are both gray then that means that they are both on the internal drive, you have two partitions on the one drive. If that is the case and you do not want any of the data that is in the second partition you can combine the partitions to get one big drive.
If the icon looks like one of the second images then there is an external drive connected.

Sleep and volume buttons broken, but there's another problem.
The sleep and volume buttons on my Ipod touch stopped working recently, and on top of that, my speaker randomly cuts out.
If I squeese the top and bottom of my Ipod hard enough, I can get the sleep button to work for about 3 seconds.
The volume buttons have not responded to anything.
My speaker started cutting out on the first day I got it, but I thought it was because I had set it up wrong. Squeesing the corner where the speaker is located will make it work again, but only for a short amount of time.
I plan on taking my Ipod to an Apple store to have it serviced, but there is one problem.
I accidently cracked my Ipod's screen. The buttons stopped working MONTHS after it happened, and the speaker was already broken.
My Ipod is still under Apple's 1 year warenty, so would they fix the buttons for free under the warenty even if the screen was cracked?
I don't care about the screen getting fixed, I just want the buttons to work again.I know the screen will not be covered, and I don't need it to be fixed.
What I want to know is will they fix the buttons?
I don't think the buttons would have broken because of the screen because the buttons broke 4 months after the screen broke.
And the speaker was broken right out of the box. -

Why not just download XCode Developer tools from the Mac App Store? It's free and contains many other useful programming utilities and IDEs to work with.

Hi all,
I just upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite, which I think might be the culprit.
I had installed MacKeeper (big oops!) several weeks ago but was able to get rid of it by deleting all conduit/zeobit files with no problems afterward. Now after upgrading to Yosemite it is back. I tried getting rid of it with the same tactics I used before to no avail.

Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer. -
I have been teaching music K-3 and had all my music downloaded on my ipod classic. Great! Then they asked me to additoinally teach 4-6 at the middle school. THe former teacher left her ipod classic with music on it but I would like to download the music from my other school on this computer so I have assess to all my music. How can I do that?

I need to move my iTunes Library... BUT (there's a catch)

OK. My itunes library is on my C: (internal) drive. However.. most of my music is stored on my external USB J: drive. Under the settings in iTunes (under advanced) I have the setting "copy files to itunes media folder when adding to library" UNCHECKED.
I have now bought a new NAS 2TB drive and which to move both my library files (c: drive) and referenced files (J: drive) over to the new NAS drive, without losing the links/corrputing/chaging my library.
I understand I could consolidate my files before moving BUT there is another windows user on this PC who has the same set up (the reason we did this is so both libraries didn't duplicate the original music mp3 files).
Anyway I can do this?Change the drive letter associated with the external drive.
Assign J: to the NAS.
Move the media folder to the same path as it had before.

I moved my entire Iphoto Library from my Macbook Pro to an external hard drive. (Prior to this, I also copied the entire library to a different ehd, plus I have 2 other ehdrives with backups). I was trying to get more space on my hd. It has a capacity of 500GB, but was down to 70GB usable, with about 300GB used up by photos. I moved the library by going to Finder, using Command+Drag+Drop onto the new Seagate ext hard drive icon. The move seems to have worked, as the library shows up on the ehd, plus will open from there. My problem is that now my Macbook Pro shows that I STILL have only 70GB available out of the 500, and that 300GB is used up by "Backups", which it did not indicate before.
I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?

You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots. Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.

You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library. Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots. -

I have lost all data on my iphone by mistake. I needed to restore the phone and I didnt realize my back-up was 1yr old, and now the phone is restored and I've got a year old contact list and iMessage chat history. Luckily my iMessage on the Mac is still valid and has all the chat history. My question is how can I restore iMessage chats on my iPhone 4 from my Mac? I have all the chat history on my Mac, but there seems to be no sync function from Mac to iphone. Please advice.If things seem to be going haywire with your phone, it seems that it MAY be a software issue.
Now, that being said, that does not necessarily mean that it is a virus. Software issues do happen sometimes. It is probably just coincidence.
What you need to do is restore the device using iTunes. This will fix any software issues. After you have done this, you can restore from an iCloud backup.
iCloud does not back up the actual software, so no, the "virus" would not have gotten into the backups.

Just got an iMac. I am trying to use Migration Assistant. The Mac side seems to be doing it's job, but my PC just keeps "Waiting for the Mac to connect." For over an hour.
Probably a PC issue, you can try calling AppleCare, you are covered for 90 days from the date of purchase and can find the phone number in the owners manual. Also please look over:

My boss is on Entourage/MAC 2003 and I am on Windows 2007, I cannot seem to work out how to get copies of his meeting requests as his only delegate.
The manual says tick 'send copies to delegate' but there is no box in that version to tick. Anyone?

Automatic backup failed
I have enough capacity but its constantly give me this failure

What can be the problem ?You say you have enough capacity (on icloud), but it could be that the device's memory is near full (for a backup, the device needs a certain amount of free memory for working files).
Go to
Settings>General>Usage. This tells how much storage is used on both iCloud and on the device.
As for photos - do not use icloud as a storage location for them. First of all, only photos in the camera roll are backed up. Even then, many user have reported that when they have performed a restore of an icloud backup, the photos were not synced and ended up being gone.
IMPORTANT...
Photos should be regularly synced to a computer (like you store photos from a digital camera) using either USB via iTunes (on a mac use iPhoto or Aperture to move them to an album) or using photo stream. If you have been doing that, then you can sync those photos back to your device if ever they get erased on the device.
If you haven't been saving photos except relying on iCloud to store them in a backup, then that is risky, as many users have discovered.
Now - about backups failing...
If you get the error "Backup not successful" and you've tried deleting the last backup and trying to back up manually without luck, try the following test: Go to...
Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap your device name in the Backups section, then look under Backup options. Turn off all apps from backup and then do a manual backup. If that doesn't work, then this post will not help. If the backup works, then go back to the app list and turn some on and try another backup. If successful, keep repeating these steps. If it fails at some point, then try to zero in on the one app that seems to make the backup fail. (I had this problem and found one app failing, probably due to a corrupt data file.)
This process will take time, but if a backup works with no app data being used but clearly fails with the original settings, then somewhere in the mix of apps is a "bad" one. -

Yes, but if you move the "original" data on your iMac to the Time Capsule....then the "original" data is now on the Time Capsule disk.
When...not if...the Time Capsule disk has a problem, you have no backups for this data.
Perhaps a much safer plan might be to add an external hard drive attached directly to your iMac. Then, move the data to that drive from the iMac.
Now, Time Machine will back up both your iMac and the external hard drive so you have "originals" on one drive and backups on another. Would that plan work for you? -
I finally managed to get through the process of moving files and catalog from Lightroom 2.7 on a PC to Lightroom 4 on my Mac. I think I did it all correctly and all my file and previews and some tagging seems to be there. Two things are lost
1 - Most importantly, the development history on my files. I can see the edited versions in the previews, but as soon as I click on it, I can see that I lose all the changes I had made before. When I look at Development history, it just says "Imported on...." I'd love to get this back. That is a ton of processing work just lost because I switched computers.
2 - The collection names seem to have come over, but they are all empty. This is also a lot of work lost, though not as important as #1
