Mac Help disappeared - how to re-install just this

Mac Help has disappeared from our i Book. How can we re-install just the "Help" and not risk losing or corrupting everything on the hard drive?
Thank you.

Hi D44,
first try this: FIXED: Help Viewer crashes or shows blank window.
If this does not work, reinstall Help Viewer from the Mac OS X Update 10.4.8 Combo PPC using Pacifist. Help Viewer is located in the installer package at System/Library/Core Services.

Do you see a file named Office Installer.mpkg.  If so, double click it and and follow the prompts.

This is a User-to-User forum.  We do not have any knowledge into what Apple will or will not do.
However, based on past history, it is unlikely Apple will invest anything except critical security updates into Mac OS X 10.5.  I could be wrong.
If you really REALLY need Java 1.6 on your Mac, you should consider upgrading to a newer version of Mac OS X.

Does your Mac meet the requirements?
    Lion 10.7 System Requirements
        •    Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor (most models released since late 2006 - early Intel-based Macs with Core Solo or Core Duo processors aren't compatible)
        •    2GB of memory (recommend at least 4GB -- and ideally even more, as you'll see benefits in many computing tasks)
        •    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended) for Lion download from Apple App Store; or Leopard 10.5.x if using Lion on USB drive
        •    7GB of available space (10GB recommended)

since upgrading to 10.7.2 to use iCloud, i keep getting a window message with ubd wants to use the login keychain, i put the right password but it keeps coming back, anyone for help to how to get rid of this...

This is what I did and it seems to have worked so far. While that little annoying box is up you need to open the Keychain access by:
going to applications -> open utilities folder -> click to open Keychain Access
Now here is the stupid part, you have to continue to press the cancel button on the "ubd wants to use login keychain" box for the kaychain window to open. Once you have keychain access open go to:
the top of your monitor and select "Keychain Access" right next to the little apple logo -> click preferences in the options panel-> the preference box will open now -> click "Reset My Default Keychain" -> another box will pop up that says "Please enter your login password. This password will be used to create your new keychain" (of course this is assuming that you use a login password to access your mac) -> enter your login password and a box shows up that says "created a new empty 'Login' keychain"
After that you should be good to go. This new keychain you created with your login password overides the old keychain. The old keychain is still available in the Keychain's folder but is not being used and therefor can be deleted. All you have to do now is press ok, and your good. If the "ubd wants to use login keychain" box is still there after you reset your keychains just hit cancel and it should be gone for good or you can enter your login password.
Is this a fixall that will work forever? I have no idea but doing this has allowed me to access my network at work and all the servers I need to get to.
Oh and one more thing. You may need to press cancel on the ubd box throughout this entire process, I just gon in the habit of clicking a button hitting cancel on the ubd box and the new window would pop up.
I hope this helps you! Sorry if it's long, I was trying to be as detailed as possible to make it  easier. Let me know how it goes.

  • Mac OSX 10.6 cannot be installed on this computer

Hi everybody - this is my first post on here so please be gentle!
    My kit:
    13" MBP, Intel core 2 duo @ 2.26GHz. 2MB DDR3 RAM.
    Current OS 10.5.8
I've been getting the "Mac OSX 10.6 cannot be installed on this computer" error message repeatedly whenever I try to upgrade to SnowLeopard.
Having spent a lot of time scouring these forums, I've tried pretty much every trick I spotted:
Formatted the disk and partitioned using GUID.
Resized the volume to be 130MB smaller than the partition size.
Tried booting from a USB image of SnowLeopard.
All of the above just take me back to the error message (which is now burned into my brain!!).
I do have a full TimeMachine backup which has been very handy with all of this experimentation.
Now here's the thing - my copy of 10.6.4 is a 'grey' label one. It is for the 13-inch MacBook Pro (which I have), but wasn't issued specifically for my machine. It's labelled "(c) 2010" which suggests it was made for a more modern MBP as my machine is from 2009.
From other threads, some people say that the disks are 'hardware locked' to specific machines. Others say that the more modern installation disks aren't so fussy. Do you think this could be the source of the problem? Having bought these genuine 10.6.4 disks, I'd hate to shell-out for the retail version of SnowLeopard only to find it hits me with the same dreaded error message!
Many thanks for any light you can shed on this for me.

Actually I bought the disk off eBay, but it is definitely genuine and since it was for the 13" MacBook Pro (which I have) I thought (having read the caveats about disks being hardware specific) it ought to be useable.
It's definitely a genuine set as it came with the full "Apple" packaging, booklet, wallet and even the two white Apple-logo stickers that they stick in there for some bizarre reason. Yes, I did notice (having received the disks) that there's a statement on them regarding them not being for resale, but the seller didn't happen to mention that on his auction (yeah - go figure!).
At the time of purchase I thought they were specifically for my hardware. Seeing the "2010" mark on the disks was a bit of a 'raised-eyebrow' moment, but I just find it hard to believe that the discs are being so 'touchy' given that they are for the correct model MBP, just separated by one year.
In fact, as I touched-on in my original post, some contributors to this discussion forum went as far as to say that you could even install cross-platform with the discs for more-recent hardware. I know that not everybody gets these things right when discussing stuff, but I'm just surprised that there's such a wide range of opinions regarding this.
If there are no further ideas, I'll have to put it down to experience and go buy the retail version. If anyone has any further advice or experiences of this issue, positive or negative, I'd still be glad to hear from them though.
Thanks all for the input so far.

  • Javascript error on - Help - Learn how to use Numbers with this online...

I am trying to find out more about Numbers. I am using iTunes 9.1.1 on a Vista PC. I get a Javascript error in Internet Explorer 8 when I try to access:

The above page is blank except for boxes for Keynote Help, Pages Help, Numbers help, and a blank input field that seems to do nothing. Here is the Javascript error message from Internet Explorer 8:

  • Why Mac Help doesn't work after installing Leopard?

After installing Leopard Mac Help shows a untitled window and after few seconds it disappear.

Actually no. I'm working on the same environment before installing Leopard. No firewall...but I'm working from China where a massive Great Firewall is controlled by the government. That case I shouldn't be the only one.

  • Finder's Mac Help gone; how do I get it back?

When I open Mac Help in the finder, the Help Viwer window opens but no contents appear. If I click on Home in that window, I get contents, but the links do not work. If I choose topics from the Help Viewer's Library menu, most work but Apple Script, Mail and Safari Help windows open with no contents (same as Mac Help above). I have repaired permissions. My questions:
    1. Where does help live? I can't find it in Applications or in Library.
    2. I wasn't doing anything unusual when it got messed up.
    3. How do I get back just the parts of Mac Help I have lost?
    Thanks for your help.

    Try this:
In most cases doing the following will restore the Help Viewer:
    1. Trash the following three files, if extant:
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.help.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpui.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist
    2. Trash the /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui folder.
    3. Empty the Trash and Restart.

  • Help, my Help disappeared, how do I get it back

Since installing Tiger and updating, everything seemed fine, but I have now noticed my Mac help (in Finder is gone). Help! My keyboard is typing some alternate characters, for instance my apostrophe key is now è, and my question mark key is now é, and I cannot look up in Help how to fix this!

Thank you. I knew about the alternate keyboards, but couldn't remember how to fix it, and with my help broken couldn't look it up. Luckily my son remembered how to change the keyboard; but oddly even when I fixed it, it kept changing back to the Canadian French keyboard (which has these alternate characters) right in the middle of typing an email! Some bug there. I have worked around it by disabling for now, the Canadian French keyboard - I can always turn it back on when I need it.
For the lost help, I called apple care before you posted your help. The link you gave was also good, but they walked me through the fix, and I only needed to delete one file. Here is what worked for me:
If Mac help is bringing up a blank screen that doesn't work (you can't search for help), you fix it by deleting the file "com.apple.helpui" and then restarting your computer.
    Here is what you do:
Find the file you need to delete by opening a finder window, and choosing column view. Then click your home (picture of a little house with your name beside it), and in the first column click the folder Library, then inside it (will show in the next column) click Caches, then inside it (will show in the next column) click the file com.apple.helpui and drag it the trash in your Dock. Then restart. Help will be back!!

  • As an elderly rookie, I don't know how to download, install, & activate this software. Please help!

I bought this but do not know how to download, install, and activate it. Please help!

Let's start with the basics. Adobe have a baffling number of choices.
    1. What is your computer system? For example, Windows 7, Mac OS Yosemite
    2. What exactly are you trying to download and install? If you paid for it, check your receipt for the exact name.
    3. Did you pay for it already? If so did you subscribe or get a one time purchase?

  • Mac Help disappeared

My OS X Tiger Mac help has seemed to disappear! Everything else (Safari help, Mail help, etc) seems okay. In Finder, I select Mac Help, the window opens and shows the links (Whats New in Tiger) but nothing happens when I click on a link.
When I click the little house at the top of the window, a drop down list of help topics appears. All except Mac Help work.

Hi Lyle & Welcome to Apple Discussions --
The Help Viewer problem you're experiencing is a fairly common one. I've experienced it too. I don't know why it happens (and sometimes, even after it's fixed, it happens again), but I do know where to direct you so that you can fix it.
Go to the X Lab's Help Viewer Troubleshooter and follow the steps set forth there for resetting your Help Viewer.
It's worked (and continues to work) for me, hopefully it will for you too. (You'll probably want to book mark the page, so that in case the problem returns you'll have the remedy at your fingertips.)
    Good luck.
