  • OpenFile fails in Word for Mac: "helper application missing"

The OpenFile command in Word 2004 for Mac stopped working on my machine: it threw up am error message "Helper application not present" and froze Word. This was occasionally a real problem, since the same thing happened when trying to download a Word file from a website. But it was in general not critical, since I could work around it by clicking on files in Finder, or on the list of recent files at the foot of the File menu. I assumed that, when I updated, the problem would resolve itself. However, I have now updated Word 2004 to Word 2008; updated Tiger to Leopard; and finally migrated from my original Powerbook to a new iMac. However, the problem has not gone away (though the error message no longer appears). What can I do?

This forum is for troubleshooting Apple Software Update for Windows, a software package for Windows designed to update Apple products that run on Windows, and completely unrelated to Microsoft Office.
You should really consider posting issues with Office on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac products as they would be focused more toward the issue than an Apple forum and there are Microsoft appointed MVPs there to assist.

  • "Mac Help" Search Box is suddenly missing!!

Out of the blue when I access Mac Help the screen no longer displays the search box and magnifying glass icon. Everything else is there but it means the only way I can get help is to try and find something that matches my question in the Index. This is not always good enough. Anyone got any ideas how to fix this?

Found the answer to this one via "The X Lab" as listed on someone else's post. Followed instructions to change Library prefs and now it's working again

After installing OS X Mavericks, my MSOffice for Mac WORD docs are defaulting to Pages.  Also have problem with pdf docs. Anyone have a solution to keep MS WORD as the default or docs saved as WORD docs? Solutions for the pdf problems?

I think you are right.  It appears to be solved, but new issues have popped up constantly since I upgraded, so I'll see what tmr brings.  Thanks for your help. Now I'll work on solving the issues with pdfs.

  • Installer help application missing

    Hi,
I just got a mini mac, and I re-install everything, updates new OS to 10.5.6 from apple and everything works fine.
However, when I tried to install the "Stuffit Expander 2009", I got the error message saying "Missing Critical Component. Installer help application missing."
Could somebody help me? I am new to MAC.....
    I'd really appreciate the help.
    Thanks

I just got the same message. I downloaded an Expander 2009 .dmg from VersionTracker.com and it installed just fine - give that a shot.

  • Pocket Mac vs. Missing Sync

Does anyone know which is better between Pocket Mac and the Missing Sync? I need a program to sync my Dell Axim X3 with my PowerBook G4.
    Thanks for your help.

The first releases of PocketMac were buggy but using the current version I have had no problems (except that calendar items do not delete from my Windows Smartphone when they are deleted from the Mac). PocketMac no longer has an iSync conduit but does have a menu bar item. It also mounts the PocketPC 'drives' on the Mac desktop.
I have also tried MissingSync but at the time it was too expensive for me to just sync one device with. But is was very good software.

  • Mac Help doesn't work at all...

I am using 10.3.9 and while Mac Help lanches, when I type in a question absolutely nothing happens. No matter what the question, there is no sign it is doing anything when I hit RETURN. It's like there is no help files at all.
    How do I fix this?
    Thanks

  • Is my Mac Help broken? please help...

My mac help fails to respond to anything I give it now..... whether I type in a search topic or click on any of the ready links.
Just wondering whether anyone else's mac help has been playing up? Everything else like safari help are working fine, its just mac help which does nothing when I try to use it.
    thanks everyone

    first i did this:
"Help Viewer displays a blank window
    Symptom
You launch Help Viewer but, instead of displaying the default Help information, the window is blank.
    Causes
    1. Corrupted Help Viewer preferences files or cache.
    2. Missing MacHelp.help file.
    Solutions
    1. Corrupted Help Viewer preferences files or cache....."
    then I did this:
"Help Viewer links do not work
    Symptom
When you click on a link in a Help document, the display does not change to the linked document. In particular, this may happen in Help for FileMaker® Pro and AppleWorks®.
    Causes
    • Change in the default font sized used by Help Viewer under Jaguar.
    • Corrupted Help Viewer preferences or cache.
    Solution
    • If you are using Jaguar and have changed the default font sized used by Help Viewer, see the AppleCare Knowledge Base document "Mac OS X: Help Viewer Links Do Not Respond."
    • If you have not changed the default font size used by Help Viewer under Jaguar, or are using either Panther or Tiger, then do the following.
    • Quit (Command-Q) Help Viewer if it is open.
    • Open your Home > Library > Preferences folder.
    • Trash the following three files, if extant.
    1. com.apple.help.plist
    2. com.apple.helpui.plist
    3. com.apple.helpviewer.plist
    • Open your Home > Library > Caches folder.
    • Trash the com.apple.helpui folder.............."
so, where does the replacing the MacHelp.help go?..........I'm assuming users>library>documentation>help>MacHelp.help and I have replaced it with a fresh new MacHelp.Help file extracted from the guts of my disk one installer.
and it STILL DOES NOT WORK.
the links from Help viewer do not work...search does not work.
i'm almost ready to reinstall my entire os (already) to get back to square one with the help thing and then what when it breaks again?
    this is entirely frustrating.

  • "Mac Help" no longer works.  It just spins and spins and spins.

Today my Mac Help stopped working. I open Mac Help, type in a query, and it just spins and spins an dspins an never returns a result or fails. For the life of me I can't figure out what is wrong. Any ideas?

  • Mac Help no longer searches

Mac Help, in all apps that I've tried is no longer searchable. When I open Mac Help in say iTunes and search for the term Cover Flow the Help app doesn't find anything and the search icon just spins. When I click to stop the search the icon continues spinning.
I've tried to reset Help with Onyx to no avail.

    Solved, specifically I did this:
Quit Help Viewer if it is open. Leopard users should click the red Close button in the upper-left corner of the Help Viewer window. Users of Tiger and earlier can press the Command-Q (Quit) keyboard shortcut.
Trash the following three files in your Home > Library > Preferences folder, if extant:
    com.apple.help.plist
    com.apple.helpui.plist
    com.apple.helpviewer.plist
Trash the following two folders in your Home > Library > Caches folder, if extant:
    com.apple.helpui folder
    com.apple.helpdata
    Empty the Trash.
Test that Help Viewer is now operating normally.
    Many thanks Ferd II!

  • My "Mac Help" on my Mac Mini does not work!

I have a Mac Mini, OS X 10.3.9. When I go into Mac Help, nothing happens when I try to ask questions, and I experience other problems when I try to go through Mac Help's library. And sometimes it works as if nothing was wrong. It's just plain sick. Is there any way to reinstall it? Not being able to use the Help at times is problematic to say the least.

    Hi carpetcomber,
    Welcome to the Discussions!
When it happens, just try deleting its Caches folder, this should clean it:
(quit Help) and delete this folder:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui
If Help still doesn't work, try then deleting those three files:
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.help.plist
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpui.plist
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist
    and the Caches again.

  • Mac help not available in tiger

I have a new imac with tiger. I can open mac help window, can click on 'search all help' and do a search. The search results are displayed but then if I click on a topic in 'mac help' nothing comes up.
Help is available in the helper windo for all other applications, so I don't think it's a problem with the help window, just suspect mac help is not installed.
    PLEASE HELP!

  • Mac Help does not work

When I am in the finder, and select Mac Help from the Help menu, the help window appears for a few seconds, does not allow me to use it, and then closes again
Hence I do not have access the the Mac Help database
    what to do?

Help Viewer crashes or shows blank....
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?[email protected]@.6897a2ae http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/helpviewer.html
This is a common bug in Panther. The solution to this problem is simple though:
    • (~ means your home directory)
If the search field is not in the top of the window.... click on the oblong button at the top right hand corner...that should open the Toolbar and display the search field.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences and delete the following files......
    com.apple.help.plist
com.apple.helpui.plist (you may or may not have this one).
    com.apple.helpviewer.plist
Next go to ~/Library/Caches and delete the folder......
    com.apple.helpui
Log out and log in. If the problem is gone, empty the trash. If not, put everything back.
you can open MacHelp directly from .....
    /Library/Documentation/Help and it works fine.

  • Why Mac Help doesn't work after installing Leopard?

After installing Leopard Mac Help shows a untitled window and after few seconds it disappear.

Actually no. I'm working on the same environment before installing Leopard. No firewall...but I'm working from China where a massive Great Firewall is controlled by the government. That case I shouldn't be the only one.

  • Mac Help not Helping

    Hi
Im running OS X Tiger 10.4.2
Tiger came as an update DVD in the box along with my Mac Mini and I have since performed an "erase and install" version of tiger. When I load mac help nothing works. When I type spotlight or dashboard for example, the little cog will spin and do nothing. The links don't work either.
Anybody have a clue what's wrong!?
Thanks in advance for any help

    Try the following:
In most cases doing the following will restore the Help Viewer:
    1. Trash the following three files, if extant:
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.help.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpui.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist
    2. Trash the /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui folder.
    3. Empty the Trash and Restart.
Also, be sure you have an active internet connection when using Help because many help files have to be downloaded, they are not available locally.
