Mac help for an abject idiot

I have a rarely and barely used G4 w/ 10.3.9. I bought it only for music recording purposes AND to become more familiar with mac (and to bask in the aura of god given superiority reserved for mac users.)Alas, I dwell in the purgatorial abyss. Right now my computer hangs when I open explorer, gives me an internal disk error if I use disk utility... and I really don't know if I am suppose to use it anyway... will not open itunes for toffee nor let me reinstall it.
I freely admit to brain-washed by bill gates...window-washed, if you will. I can fix almost any windows problem though I've spent years learning to do it.
Could someone just direct me as to any glaring known issues for the above problems as well as basic disk/system management and maintenance.
Many thanks.
G4 Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

It is good to hear that your problem is solved. Thanks for letting us know.
As to the old operating system (OS 9 - also called Classic), you might want to hang on to it. From what you said, you do have some apps that run only under that operating system. When you start one of those up, it will start Classic and you get the message that you are talking about. I don't think Classic takes up a lot of room on present day hard drives, so I would not worry about getting rid of this.
Should you use Safari as opposed to IE? That is partly a matter of personal taste. The argument against IE is that there are no longer new versions coming out for the Mac. Thus, it is slowly becoming more and more outdated. On the other hand, Safari is under development and is a state of the art browser. However, IE might do everything that you want, so it might be a fine choice for you. In my opinion, just keep both browsers. If one does not seem to work correctly on some web page, try the other browser.
You seem a bit worried about space. Are you running low on hard drive space or just wondering what all of the stuff is?

Hello & thank you for giving me some of your time & looking at my topic. I am very new to the Macworld & am having some unidentified issue(s) with a mid2010 MBP such as: firefox & Safari both frequently crashing & refusing to load pages, general system slowing and freezes, many force quits required for various (nonpattern) apps. After a brief visit to the Safari forum I decided to have another look at the console logs but came up short for crash logs that really coincided with the freuqunt issues occuring. A Sagitarius, I am never satisfied with the results unless they achieve what I intend them too, I continued to peruse the log, after all its only a log(right?) & I dont believe someone with basic, albeit limited, knowledge could screw up things via the logs but Ive been wrong, none the less , I did not touch(alter) anything. What I did come across in the "private/var/log:kernel.log" was something that even with my limited knowledge apears somewhat suspicious, enough that I believe it warented my first 'copy & paste for assistance purposes' , to date, despite having suffered through windowsWHATEVER for all my life prior to about 3 months ago. {{SOrry, I dont intend to be long winded but I acknowledge my tenancy to being overly throrough & my inability to leave out my personality as well. }}Thank you once again.

  • Help for a bewildered idiot please

    Dear Geniuses
Proud owner of an (almost new -refurb) MBP and some fine software called Final Cut Studio 2 badly needs your help
.Firstly have to admit Im a very recent convert to the Mac side of life (about 6 days!)and aforementioned software
All was going swimmingly and was very impressed (except for the lack of a right click button but hey)and had even reached lesson 3 of my training DVD when all of a sudden getting a dropped frame warning (its a MBP 17/2.5/2gb/250-5400) moved application and associated files to my Lacie 500gb - 7200 external drive (I think) connected on firewire 800 reduced the RT to medium p/b and half frame rate ...no joy still getting freezing and stuttering of picture ( I disabled warnings)
Anyway for Mac experts out there a few questions
1 would upping my Ram to 4 gb help
    2 should I connect via e-SATA (and how )
    3 any other suggestions
4 (whats the best mouse with a right click for a mac????)
Very frustrated but thanking all in advance
    cheers

1 would upping my Ram to 4 gb help ... more RAM is always a good thing
2 should I connect via e-SATA (and how ) ... that would certainly give you faster disc access. you would need an ExpressCard/34 based eSATA adaptor
3 any other suggestions ... you can configure your OS X System Preferences >> Keyboard and Mouse >> Trackpad settings to allow you to right click by doing a two finger tap. Enable the "For secondary clicks..." option.
4 (whats the best mouse with a right click for a mac????) ... well I like the Apple Mighty Mouse personally, but any basic two button mouse will work without need for third party drivers. more "fancy" mice will usually ship with Mac drivers too
    other thoughts:
just how full is your external hard disc? if its chok full of stuff then you'll likely get much reduced performance.
bigger disc drives do not necessarily mean faster disc drives. a basic RAID 0 pair will give you much better performance than a single disc
how many apps are you running simultaneously? make sure you don't have unneeded applications open at the same time as their background processes and RAM footprint will eat away at the resources available to FCP

  • Help for a newbie idiot

I know this is stupid but I'm stupid - I've been editing in CS4 Premiere - somehow I lost my timeline with all my edited files. I cannot figure out how to get it back and have wasted the last hour trying to figure this out. And now when I open a new project, that section does not appear and I can't get it to appear - of course it's hard to edit when I can't actually edit. Everything else is still there - just this one window is completely gone. I know it's something simple, however I just can't figure out what. Please help an idiot and tell me how to get this back. Thank you, friends

If all your sequences and clips are still in the Project Window and just the timeline is missing.
Double click on the sequence in the Project Window.
    Or reset your workspace.

  • Mac Help and Freezing

Hello, I had some trouble with Mac Help yesterday - as in it's gone! - and I've tried the troubleshooting tips, but still no Mac Help. I don't know if probable cause is constant freezing over the last two days? Today is better (hence I can type), but I guess it is only a matter of time. The computer only freezes when plugged in and hooked up to internet, no problems when on battery (don't have Airport at home). Need Mac Help for help - but it isn't there and system keeps freezing in safari and discussions. Please, please some info?!?!?

The fact it is only freezing when you are plugged in
and hooked up to the internet says something about
how you are hooked up to the internet may be at
issue. What method of internet connection do you
have? Is it a standard telephone line, an ethernet
    or USB modem?
Also have you backed up your data? Some
troubleshooting steps may require risky operations to
the hard disk, so we want to make sure you are backed
    up first before we proceed.
Hi, and thanks for the reply. I haven't been able to respond, because - of course - every time I do the Mac freezes halfway through my message.
I have a modem and broadband at home, although I have recently purchased an Airport Card, which I haven't used yet. The problem is that I am going abroad for three months on Saturday (which is why I bought the card to access the school's WiFi where I'm going), and I doubt I'll be able to do much before then.
I only really have iTunes on it that I might not be able to get back. Although I have iPod rip which I have used. My guarantee from where I bought my iBook doesn't run out until October - so in theory I can go to them when I return.
The freezing only occurs when I'm attached to the modem (though not neccesarily online), and seems to be better when it only runs off the battery. It is very confusing. It also seems to freeze more often when I type - it's not so bad when I'm just browsing.
I'm writing this on a friend's computer to get all the info out there. I will check the responses but don't know if/when I will be able to type again as it's such a lottery...But I really would appreciate any help you can offer - and any advice about backing up my information.
    Many thanks,
    Zachary

  • Problems with "Mac Help"

My help files, especially "Mac Help", no longer work properly since upgrading to Tiger. If I open "Mac Help", for example, the help window will pop up, but the links will not work (nothing happens when I click on them) and the search feature in help will not work either (the little gray "clock" just spins next to the help bar and nothing else ever happens). Any suggestions on this one? As I'm a relatively recent Mac convert, the help feature was something that I came to rely on. Thanks!

    Hi CP,
This is a common problem with Mac Help. When it happens, try first (quit Help) deleting this folder:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui
If Help still doesn't work, try then deleting those files:
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.help.plist
(and this one if you find it):
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpui.plist
See also this KB article for more info
    - Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3: Mac Help Viewer unexpectedly quits
and this excellent X Lab FAQ

It seems (not sure about that), that Help caches get easily corrupted when interrupting searches instead of patiently waiting for its internet accessings etc?
    Good luck!

Problems setting up my TC. Have just bought new iMac(OS 10.6.8) and  TC. I tried to set it up. iMac cannot find it. I have tried direct connection with an ethernet cable to Mac or direct to my wireless router but nothing. Just a flashing orange light. Help for a simpleton please. Have tried reseting TC, but to no avail.

Just updated from 10.6.7 ---> 10.6.8 and had the same issue. Despite having done a clean install from 10.6 and got everything back off my TC, now Time Machine can't find it!
Green light is on, ethernet cable conected, network CP says its conected but nothing. Airport Utility can't find it. Hit reset button, Orange flashing light but still no show in Airport Utility.
But I know its there, as rebooting from 10.6 SL disk shows the backups are still ok?
    Hmm, ideas anyone?

I've installed windows 7 with the help of bootcamp on my macbook pro 2011.
Please help me how to install mac drivers for windows7 64 bit???

You either download drivers from within Boot Camp Assistant and save to USB FAT disk, or you insert and use 10.6.x OS X DVD when in Windows and install and run the SETUP from there.

Step 4: Install the Boot Camp Drivers for Windows
After installing Windows, install Mac-specific drivers and other software for Windows using your Mac OS X installation disc.  The Mac OS X disc installs drivers to support Mac components, including AirPort,built-in iSight camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and thefunction keys on an Apple keyboard.
The Mac OS X disc also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows and theApple Boot Camp system tray item.
To install the Boot Camp drivers:
1 Eject the Windows installation disc.
2 Insert the Mac OS X disc.  If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
    3 Follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows  Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
Windows that appear only briefly during the installation don’t require your input.
If nothing appears to be happening, there may be a hidden window that you mustrespond to. Check the taskbar and look behind open windows.
Important: Do not click the Cancel button in any of the installer dialogs.
4 After your computer restarts, follow the instructions in the Found New Hardware  Wizard to update your software drivers (Windows XP only).
5 Follow the instructions for any other wizards that appear.
6 Check for updated Boot Camp drivers by using Apple Software Update or going to www.apple.com/support/bootcamp.
If You Have Problems Installing the Device Drivers
If it appears that the Boot Camp drivers weren’t successfully installed, try repairing them.
    To repair Boot Camp drivers:
1 Start up your computer in Windows.
2 Insert your Mac OS X installation disc.
3 If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
4 Click Repair and follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows  Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
If you need to reinstall specific drivers, you can install one driver at a time. For example,if your built-in iSight camera isn’t working, you can reinstall just the iSight driver.
Individual drivers are in the Drivers folder on the Mac OS X installation disc.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Try holding the Shift key while your Mac is starting to start into safe mode. Then, after starting in safe mode, open Finder, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type /Library/StartupItems. Then, empty this folder and restart the Mac.
If your Mac starts after doing this, it was a problem with a third-party app that starts automatically when you turn on the computer. It won't start automatically anymore after doing that

  • Purchasing help for the mac

    hi all.
new to mac and relatively new to adobe. hoping for some guidance.
i run a small design build firm and recently ported to the mac os while still running a couple of boot camp installs of windows and parallels with windows 7 on the laptop. I am currently using Aperture to get my images organized and have been reasonably happy with it.
i am in need of a "poster - workflow" using something like indesign but i am sure i could also use photoshop (which I am familiar with) and illustrator (for various vector manipulations i imagine). i'll also be doing some modest print material, keynote presentations and i have a wordpress website/blog and will be updating a very old blog at some point in the future. i would also /love/ to have a way to manipulate 3D files into my print work in creative ways.
can anyone give me the lowdown as to whether I should be buying the InDesign CS5 Suite that includes Photoshop, ID and AI (for the mac) and whether I need to look at Acrobat 3D (for Wind 7 because there is no Mac option for this)?
I mention some tangential issues in case anyone can offer tangential advice and apologies if this is not exactly the right forum as I am just getting started on figuring out where to enter the discussion over here.
    TIA for any help.
    Jon

    thanks very much John.
sorry, i have been trying to work my way through the mud over here.
so the "poster workflow" would be something along the lines of a 24 x 36 inch set of poster boards for a competition and I'd ideally like to be able to set the images, update them and then have the poster update. I had a really pleasant experience with the ID demo a number of months ago so I'm totally sold on ID.
i also do a lot of 3D modeling and expect to include "vector-based" images in some of these presentations. since i am familiar with photoshop i am also sold on photoshop. i've been on the mac for a year and a half and editing images has been a mess quite frankly without it. so i'm hoping to solve a number of problems.
do you by any chance have any experience with the mac?
i mean, i guess "CS5.5" is the suite of products mentioned above is that right? do i have any deals that i can work if i purchase this (pricewise)? I don't think I can hold off until 2Q 2012 which I assume means somewhere around March?
Anyway, the other issue is that I am organizing images in Aperture and I can't quite figure out if I get a more economical workflow by moving to something like Lightroom. It would be great to not have to always export images out of aperture to get them into the AI, ID, Photoshop workflow. But I am not sure how Lightroom works with these three, either.
Lastly, my look at Acrobat 3D /seemed/ like it was pretty robust. It appears that I can insert a 3D model into a pdf document and let others rotate it around in real time. It also appeared that it would let me do an "exploded axonometric" in a rather easy manner. the pain for me here is if it is only available on the windows platform.
anyway, i realize some of this is rather specialized and that some of it is rather obtuse as I try and hack my way forward.
any advice you can offer I'd be grateful for...
    regards.
