Mac Help in Finder comes up blank

Whenever I go into the Finder and choose Help, the Help window comes up totally blank. If I enter a question, the results show nothing.
I only have this problem on my G4 PowerBook, so I usually use my tower, but when I am not home it is a pain.
Is there a way just to reinstall the Help files?

I have exactly the same problem but I haven't looked into it as I will be returning this 12" baby to Apple soon due to other issues.
My previous 12" pBook (also returned for quality issues, natch) had, as I recall, a working Apple Help function in finder until I partitioned the drive and re-installed Tiger. Thereafter, no Apple Help. I tried copying Help files and Help App across from a working PB system but to no avail.
The current one has been upgraded to 10.4.4 and I still have nothing in the Apple help.
Alas the workaround above does not help either. If you access help from another App, then hit the Home button to get the Apple Help home page, none of the topic links is active.
I have been meaning to post on this for a while and am amazed to just come across it for the first time.... wait a minute.

I have just done a search in discussions for Help Viewer and it seems this is a known issue. There is a simple solution. Just tried it - and it works... Woo hoo!

Mac Help from finder help crashes

Hi all-
when I try to select "Mac Help" from the finder's help menu, the help viewer appears for a short time (with no content), then disappears.
If I open the help viewer manually (via the app folder, or spotlight) it works fine. I have repaired permissions.

Mac help in Finder

Hi All,
I have recently purchased a Powerbook "12". After booting, I clicked on Help, the screen was blank, I clicked on Home icon whick brought me to the introducing tiger screen.
My problem is when I go to select a topic nothing happens. No icons or topic appear. When i enter a question i just get the old spinning wheel.
Has anybody else had this problem

ALV help - Excel sheet comes in blank

I need help with my ALV implementation. The ALV displays fine but when I try to view it in Excel, by clicking on the icon, I get blank pages. Does anybody have any ideas? Below is the code that I am using to display the ALV.

Mac Help feature blank box

The Mac Help function often comes up totally blank, or if it has hyperlinks, they do not work.
This happens at anytime, seemingly unrelated to anything else.
What to do?

Yes, you can rename the corrupted caches folder, or simply get rid of it by dragging it to the Trash.
If deleting the Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui folder still doesn't fix Mac Help,
try then deleting those preference files:
Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist
and
Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.help.plist
A common and harmless problem, most probably related to Mac Help's hyper-sensitivity to erratic internet connection while updating its contents.

Mac Help Crashes in Finder

Whenever I choose "Mac Help" in Finder, a window opens up briefly, then disappears completely (crashes). Does this happen to anyone else, or do you know of a fix?
So far, I have had many problems with Leopard, especially in Mail (troubles sending email with constant requests for password). I am hoping a new upgrade will fix many of these bugs.

Even though Troubleshooting Help Viewer, by Dr. Smoke is written for Tiger/Panther/Jaguar, I believe that you may benefit from reading Reset Help Viewer.

Why won't my Mac help work anymore?

I was trying to look up how to change permissions on a folder by going to the MAC help in finder when I realized no matter what I asked, it just wouldn't stop the spinning circle and a blank page.

Download OnyX and in the "automation" section is a "reset Mac OS X help"
see if that works, it has for some,
while your add it, check off everything in automation, it will give a slight performance boost.

Vanishing Mac Help?

I can't open Mac Help in Finder anymore. I've tried trashing some preference files (com.apple.help.plist, com.apple.helpviewer.plist, and com.apple.recentitems.plist) and also deleted com.apple.helpui from the Caches folder in Library. I emptied the Trash and restarted. No luck.
Also tried repairing permissions. No change.
Any idead?

Well, in the absence of any other ideas, I downloaded and reinstalled the 10.4.10 combo update. That seems to have rectified the problem.

Mac Help Docs missing

All my Mac help docs are missing, when I select mac help in finder all the help documents don't appear this is with all
apps like quicktime etc
is there anyway of re-installing them all from the system disk

Each time I click mac help under finder the help window appears and before I can do anything it disappears. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Also, Is there a way to customize the icons that are located on the dock?

To customize the Dock icons, I think you would have to change the icon of the application, Utility, or Folder, that the Dock alias points to.
Mac OS X: How to Use Custom Icons
Once you have done that, pull the old icon off of the Dock, if it hasn't changed, and reinsert the new custom one.

Sounds very relevant.
Do you have access to another computer with Numbers installed?
If so, do your files open properly on that computer?
If so, then the problem is your computer itself, which is best posted in a different forum.

Finder's Mac Help gone; how do I get it back?

When I open Mac Help in the finder, the Help Viwer window opens but no contents appear. If I click on Home in that window, I get contents, but the links do not work. If I choose topics from the Help Viewer's Library menu, most work but Apple Script, Mail and Safari Help windows open with no contents (same as Mac Help above). I have repaired permissions. My questions:
1. Where does help live? I can't find it in Applications or in Library.
2. I wasn't doing anything unusual when it got messed up.
3. How do I get back just the parts of Mac Help I have lost?

Try this:
In most cases doing the following will restore the Help Viewer:
1. Trash the following three files, if extant:
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.help.plist
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpui.plist
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist
2. Trash the /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui folder.
3. Empty the Trash and Restart.

In Finder, Mac Help doesn't work

When I click on the help icon in the finder tool bar, and choose the " mac help" drop down, a window that says, "untitled" opens, but it is then, poof, gone in a few seconds.

What exactly did you try? Obviously, the bit about reinstalling the 10.4.6 update doesn't apply to Leopard since it is an update to Tiger (10.4). The equivalent for 10.5 might be the 10.5.1 update, especially the 110 MB download version at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1051update.html.
Also, I don't know if it applies here, but I notice that on my system at least, there is not only a "com.apple.helpui" folder in ~/Library/Caches/, but also "com.apple.helpdata" & "com.apple.helpviewer" ones as well, each with a single file, "Cache.db," as their only contents. These two help-related folders do not appear in my Tiger home folders.
In general, Leopard seems to use a lot more database files to keep track of things than Tiger did. It may be that the article needs to be updated for Leopard to take this into account and/or that one or both of these cache-related files is the culprit.
_Please note_: I have not tried deleting either file & cannot say if there are any ill effects from doing so.

I've been using Tiger on this G4 for several months. Today, I clicked on Help menu in the Finder window. The viewer came up, but it was blank.
At the same time, something happened to my Airport, but I got connected through Diagnostics.
How can I get my Mac Help working?
