Mac HelpMate vs. OnyX
This post is in regard to my previous posting about a reboot problem where Mac HelpMate was scheduled to perform maintenance at 1:45PM (I don't recall setting it to that, but that's besides the point) and then rebooted at 1:52PM. However, it didn't warn me when it was going to happen. I usually have the sound off and when the maintenance starts, the system chime goes off (the only indication of anything happening), but there is no visual showing that anything is happening plus no CPU indication that anything is happening. My findings from the previous thread concluded that the maintenance processes were taking 2 minutes and then delaying reboot for 5 minutes via a preferences option in Mac HelpMate. I have since uninstalled Mac HelpMate and have erased a certain line in autocron.sh that gave the shutdown and reboot command. Problem solved.
I have downloaded OnyX and have performed the same maintenance as what Mac HelpMate was supposedly performing when it started its scheduled maintenance. I did not time it very accurately, but I just performed permissions repair and cron script maintenance and it took nearly 15 minutes to complete these two processes. The CPU showed a lot of activity and the fans spooled up during the duration. This leads me to wonder if Mac HelpMate was doing anything at all for two minutes and then absolutely nothing for the next five...then rebooting for no reason at all.
OnyX seems to do most of the advanced functions that Mac HelpMate performs and seems to do them properly. I'm not saying Mac HelpMate is a bad program (perhaps something on my system broke it), but from my experience, it didn't do too much but inconvenience me at 1:52PM. Shrug
I'm suffering the same dilema! Custom built the 2 minis same as yours, just don't need gaming.
Maybe I would just go for the 256mb solid state drive (no hard drive).
Let me know which way you go?

Why is mac helpmate not working with yosemite?
It has been working in the past, but since upgrading to yosemite it has not worked...Any one else having the same issues or can provide any help?
Apparently there is a Mac HelpMate 4.0.1 that some people are using which works locally with Yosemite. It is not posted to the web site and the author has not responded to my queries so there is nothing newswise since the Nov 5 posting mentioned above.
For Mac HelpMate's utility features there are a variety of utiilty/"swiss army"-like/cache cleaneing applications around.
For remote access there is LogMeIn, TeamViewer and for Yosemite you can apparently use the Screen Sharing as long as you have the remote computers Apple ID (you can request a screen share and don't need to know the password since they are granting you access).

Unable to fix Safari 3.2.1 Problems with OnyX
Based upon several forum comments about benefits of using OnyX, I tried to use this application to correct Safari problems. Specifically, Safari crashes often; it stalls while opening additional tabs; it indicates slow scripts in process; and, generally it forgets to save userids and passwords despite preference settings. Our Hawaiian contributor suggests using OnyX for problems like these, so I tried it. These challenges exist: with automation selected and *only one block checked* [maintenance: maintenance scripts], the application stalls out. I've waited as long as 20 minutes with no movement in the progress bar beyond the first third of it or so. Please advise how to set and use OnyX for Mac OS 10.4.11 if that's the problem. If not, please suggest means to correct the Safari problems. Thanks.

There are daily, weekly and monthly maintenance scripts built-in to OSX which automatically run in the middle of the night if you leave you Mac on. Onyx, Cocktail, Applejack, etc. provide easier to use front ends to run those scripts which clean logs, caches, etc.. I think Applejack can probe and clean a bit deeper than the other two, but I'm really not sure. Have only read where it will often fix things that other utilities might not. Can't say that I can make anything of any logs it creates either. Basic test is if your machine runs and feels 'well' after (Safari troubles not withstanding). The point of these are to ensure that your system is kept in good order. I may be wrong, but if you've run Applejack successfully (i.e. it ran all 5 steps and completed in good order) then you most probably don't have to run Onyx. There may be something deeper wrong.
In the Read Me file for Applejack it says:
+Corrupted preference files are moved into a directory that will mirror the original preference directory, with (Corrupt) added to the directory name. For example, corrupt preferences files found in ~/Library/Preferences will be moved to ~/Library/Preferences (Corrupt). After running AppleJack, you'll probably want to take a look at them (and most likely throw out those folders). As of version 1.4.2, AppleJack now creates a copy of the directory tree inside the (Corrupt) folder so that if any files were deeply nested inside the original preference folder, they will be placed in an identical directory hierarchy in the new (Corrupt) folder. This way, if for any reason you would want to move a preference file back, you know where it should go.+
+6. AppleJack has a primitive logging mechanism. It writes a journal of most of its activity to /var/log/AppleJack.log. AppleJack will automatically reset the log the next time you run it, if the file should ever reach a size somewhat over 500k.+
Have your checked to see if there was a (Corrupt) folder created and if so, what bad preferences might have been found?

Newer hard disks have this facility built-in to more or less check hard disk health on a regular basis so as to hopefully identify potential disk problems early before they become a critical issue. Again, I really don't have any idea what it actually does, but it is supposed to be a useful health check, hence useful to do.
re:Safari 4.0
Haven't touched it and as a rule don't fool around with beta's let alone any x.0 software to help keep my system working well. I have read that there is an uninstall option on the beta installer which will remove all of the beta and restore back to 3.2.1. Assume you've done that?
One more thing – Have you tried Safari in a different user account other than your own basic one? I have created a new User via System Preferences->Accounts and call it Test User. I don't alter this account at all from what is created by OSX, so it is 'clean'. When I have something going on that I can't seem to trace it, I test the same situation in the Test User to see if it is there or not. If things are normal there, then the problem is isolated to my own user account somewhere – i.e. I know better where to look. If things are also a problem there, then it is more likely a system-wide problem. That is how I've traced my own Safari problems to something somewhere in my own account. Safari worked just fine in under Test User.
If the same problems exist in a new User (pointing to a wider system problem), and using another browser like Firefox is not an acceptable option, then you may need to do a new re-install of Tiger (Archive & Install) and start with a clean stabile system again.

Distorted audio playback with LP9 and Onyx 400F
Hi. I've got a new 21.5" iMac (intel) running 10.6.2 and I've been using an Onyx 400F and Logic Pro 9 with no problems until this afternoon. I know that Mackie have discontinued support for the 400F (frankly I can't see the difference in support from when it wasn't discontinued...) and the last Mac drivers were for Tiger etc etc. However, without any "adjustments" I was just able to plug the Onyx into the Mac and it worked. However, when I came in this afternoon and woke the machine up, all the audio now plays back distorted. I've googled and not found any real answers. I've tried adjusting the buffer size up and down. If I drop it to 32 samples, I get (expected) glitching, but the distortion is still there. Once I raise it to 64, the glitching goes away, but the distortion stays. Taking it a step at a time all the way up to 1024, there's still distortion.
This was working fine last night. There's been no software updates applied. Nobody has installed any software of any kind, no system settings have been changed. I've power cycled the Mac and the Onyx. I've disconnected the firewire and reconnected it. Logic detects it fine in each case, but I can't get clean audio out of it anymore. I've tried switching sample rates and bit depths. I can't think of anything else and there's not much help out there in google land. Percussive maintenance is the next step...
If anyone has any ideas, it would be hugely appreciated.

I've been asking on various audio forums about whether the Mackie 400f works okay with Snow Leopard (seeing as the drivers are out-of-date).
At the moment I'm running the 400f with Windows XP, but I want to switch to Mac(Book Pro) and I don't want to downgrade the operating system. Have you properly fixed this distortion problem or is it a temporary fix? I've read about it elsewhere, and it worries me -- perhaps it would be better to swap the 400f now to a newer interface while it's still under warranty...

Software update no longer works after 10.4.9 update
After I applied the 10.4.9 update, using the combo updater and fixing permissions both before and after, Software Update can no longer connect to the Internet. I also ran Onyx, but it didn't make a difference.
Any ideas? Could a network-end firewall make a difference?I just came across an article on the Unsanity weblog, www.insanity.org/archives/macos_x/shock_andawe.php, entitled: "The Dangers of Updating: Don't Do Anything While Optimizing." It says there is a bug in 10.4.9, of which Apple is aware, that messes up "prebinding" if any other activity is done while the optimizating is going on. Using Mac Helpmate 1.1, I optimized "update prebinding." It characterized that process as "Reassociating applications with their dynamic libraries." It returned a log as long as King Kong's arm saying many times, "environment variable disabled use of prebinding in (file name)." An inability to Download Updates is not a result mentioned in the Unsanity weblog, but it may be a result nevertheless. I have frequently used other applications while downloading updates. "problem connecting to server" when trying to access local disk
Recently (perhaps since I upgraded to Yosemite), the first time I try access one of my two hard drives through Finder I get two pop-up windows with error "there was a problem connecting to server". When I dismiss the pop-ups, the Finder window appears OK. I then don't get these errors for some time and then I get them again - and always two errors.
It seems the access request goes through NAS which fails ...
"NetAuthSysAgent[11958]: ERROR: AFP_GetServerInfo - connect failed 62"
and "NetAuthSysAgent[11958]: GetStatus: connecting to self not allowed"
but then it gets actioned as a local access. Can anyone think of why NAS gets involved? And mainly how to get rid of it :^).
There is nothing in login items that mounts either of the disks as a server. Is there a way to find out if a local disk is mounted as a server and who caused it?Many thanks, I am impressed by the process :^)

FinalCut Express, iMovie, iTunes ALL crash when I connect my DV camcorder..
Very weird, to me anyway. Two days ago I followed Apple's directions as to how to move my iTunes Library to a new external HD (my main HD was getting perilously full). This worked fine.
However: Now neither Final Cut nor iMovie recognizes my Cannon ZR700 when I try to import/capture footage from it. So long as the camera is plugged into the firewire port & "on" in VTR mode, Final Cut Express, iMovie, & iTunes (why iTunes? what does it have to do with a Cannon ZR700 DV camera?) all freeze up. If I turn the power on the camera off, they un-freeze.
But the main issue is this:
I cannot import ANY clips from the Cannon ZR700 nor get any program to recognize it, whereas before all did. (And why the heck would attaching a camcorder cause iTunes to freeze?)
Anyone gotta clue? This baffles me. I have tried: 1) Restarting the computer; 2) plugging the new external HD (a 500 gig Lacie) & the camera into different firewire ports; 3) verifying & repairing permissions on all drives.
NOTHING helps.

utilities > disk utility > repair permission, or run
ONYX or machelpmate to repair and optimize your HD.
Check. Did this too, several times. I did it with Dick Utility. I did it booting from my Intsallation Disk. Now I have done w/ Mac Helpmate.

Yes. Did this several times too. None of the utilities reports any problems.
Here is some more information:
1) A strange thing: When iMovie or FC Exp freeze while the Cannon ZR700 is on & plugged in, turning the camera off works like a "switch" that sets the programs running again. Very strange.
2) I get the following message in Final Cut on startup if the camera is connected:
"Unable to locate the following external devices:
Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480)."
I do not know what this means. I never saw it before when the ZR700 used to work. I am also asked to check my "capture presets." I suppose I do this in "Easy Set-up." I checked & it is set up for DV-NTSV Firewire Basic. I changed it to a number of other settings: No go. Never recognizes the camera.
3) I am in Japan using an iMac bought here. The Cannon ZR700 I got in the USA. However, as I indicated, they worked fine together until this week: until I added the new external 500 gig HD.
Still puzzled!

Sluggish brightness/volume adjusting
Very weird problem. Used to be very speedy adjusting, but now when im adjusting volume or brightness of teh display it slowly goes up/down one adjustment at a time?

try to repair permission using ONYX or mac helpmate (available on http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/ )
It will also optimize your HD that hopefully make your system as responsive as before.
Reset PRAM and SMC if you suspect that is more of hardware rather than software.

Is there a way to check if I have either deleted a necessary file or...
Firstly, let me apologize for this rather long post. I just want to make sure I give as much detail in order to get the problem really solved...
I have a MacBook Pro 2GHz Intel Core Duo with 512 MB of ram. I am running OS 10.4.10 and don't have the means to either upgrade the OS, increase ram or even backup and reinstall (I am in a remote part of the South Pac. Islands, working as a relief worker, without much more than a dish to connect to the net).
Now while I know that QuickTime has nothing to do with WMA files and that Flip4mac is the solution of record, allow me to pose my problem (because I can't get a straight answer on other forums whose only suggestion is to reinstall their software).
I have been using Flip4Mac QuickTime components successfully (to save radio streams) for over a year without a single problem with various versions of Quicktime. Presently, i use QuickTime version 7.6.0 and all was working fine until a few weeks ago. QuickTime works fine in every other way with the exception of playing my saved streams that contain WMA audio.
I believe I might have created the problem by either... ignorantly deleting files with a tool that allows me to examine the hard drive (including system files) in order to delete large ""unnecessary"" files... or even possibly, it occurred when questionable-content was auto-opened via QuickTime (which incidentally had caused the system to crash requiring a hard keyboard shutdown and restart). The problem occurred soon thereafter.
i have un-installed and re-installed QuickTime, Flip4Mac and even Windows Media Player for Mac several times with no change. i also ran several virus / disk scans (VirusBarrier, ClamXAV, MacScan, as well as TechTool, Mac HelpMate and MainMenu) also with no change.
The dialog box that pops up when I attempt to open ANY past saved QuickTime files basically says, QuickTime Player is 'missing a component.' This window doesn't always popup. Also the player will advance the minutes and seconds without playing a sound. Further any app that relies on WMA files also crashes, quits or just doesn't work. Such as WMA to MP3 converters. I even have problems with sounds / music from a couple of MacGames that I own (Luxor & Hidden Relics) as these games may rely on WMA to function (this may or may not be related).
My question is... is there a way to check if I have deleted a necessary codec, system file, pref. file, receipt, etc. that is crucial to using WMA?
Or even is there a way to check if some erroneous file has been added to my system (such as a DRM plugin) that is preventing the playing of my saved streams?
Once again, as I mentioned above, I am unable to backup and reinstall OSX and am at the end of my rope. The only thing that is left for me to say is.... Heeeellllppp!

Emailing Excel sheets-can't empty trash
I notice anytime I send someone an Excel spreadsheet & then dump that excel into trash I can't empty trash, why is this? I close down all excel worksheets. I even trash the sent mail that had the excel attachment. Why does it think there's still an open Excel running? Is there a simpler solution then having to use Mac Janitor or Onyx everytime I do this?
Sometimes the Mail application will hold up the process. I can't explain why, but next time try quiting Mail when you have that problem. Then you should be able to empty the trash.

I want to share my lovely photos.Burn error: 0x8002006D The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.
I haven't found anything on that error code from Apple or Sony (my dvd player). I did find out that it means the drive isn't able to read the media for some reason. A year ago I had something similar happen and a lens cleaning disc did the trick.
Here's what I learned: DVD's and CD's aren't the same and different applications treat them each differently as well.
The progression I've been throuh this time: trying different brands (Sony or Maxell - or so 'they say'), make sure I had enough space to burn on my HD, clean out caches with catch x, mac janitor, or onyx and when that still failed, delete .plist and reboot. (actually i just rename plist). Each one of those things could've made burning a problem for some media, in some areas and not others.
Then I created a guest account, logged in and that worked perfectly. I have no idea why or what to do next.
This seems to be a fairly common problem that's been going on for awhile now. Apple doesn't have a single document on it. I think most are just replacing thier drives.

I know that widgets can be moved to float above windows, but is there a way to make them reside below all windows, but stay on the desktop, much like vista's gadgets or SuperKaramba or GDesklets?
So is there anyway to do this without downloading software though? Like an option in "system preferences." I have "mac pilot" and "onyx" and with one of those there is an option to put Dashboard into developer mode and I checked off the option, except I don't know how to "activate" that now....? Thanks!

Optimizing system performance. How to?
So i know that you can use all the programs that come with any mac in the utilites folder to optmize performace. However, I recently downloaded a program called "Mac HelpMate" which is a more user friendly interface which allow one to access all the utilites and do such tasks such as repair disk permissions, clean caches, erase user logs blah blah blah. The problem is it isn't idiot proof and I need some info on what is appropriate to do and what isn't. I guess I am looking for a tutorial on what tasks/chores I should do. I have repaired disk permissions but that is it, just curious what else. I need some clarification on what is what and how to's. Thanx in advance.

My recent problem is everytime I restart the mini, hard drive icon appears at the centre of the desktop instead of its usual place. This started after I made some changes on the size of the desktop icons. Thanks...Additionally, you could download the program Mac HelpMate:

Then, click on the lock in the bottom right, enter your system / administrator password.
Then, click on the "Clean" tab.
