Mac - hot  stuff

3 questions if I may.
The back of my iMac gets very hot and my temp widget says its 70 degrees in there. Is this normal for everyone else?
We've got a mini heat wave here in England at the moment. My house is very hot. Is there a temperature that I should avoid going above while my mac is on. I've checked mac help but I can't see any ref for this?
And finally. My mac is often on about 18 hours a day. Does apple deem that as normal. Am I putting a strain on my mac?

As far as I know, I think this is pretty normal. My iMac gets up to those temperatures and handles the heat quite well. I live in Brisbane, Australia where temperatures are often extremely high. I think that as long as your mac is performing as normal then there is nothing to worry about.
Apple suggests the following technical specs for the imac:
Operating temperature: 10° to 35° C (50° to 95° F)
Storage temperature: -40° to 85° C (-40° to 185° F)
Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing
Maximum altitude: 3,000 metres (10,000 feet)
You would probably know if your mac was struggling because the fans would be on high all the time.
Hope this helps.

  • Got enough of this whiney hot stuff!

Today my second MBP (week 14) arrived after my first one (week 12) went back due to whine, heat and TMOp errors. Unfortunately this brand new unit behaves exactly(!) like the one I sent back. It whines like crazy, the heat of the keyboard and the armwrist area is close to unbearable and the hardware test gave me the famous TMOp error twice.
Having worked with three different MBPs now (week 9, 12 and 14) which all exhibit the whine and get uncomfortably hot I'm now pretty sure that a problem-free book is rather an exception (if at all available) than the norm. This PMU resetting, OS/firmware updating stuff does absolutely nothing to fix the problems (there should be something about this in the release notes then, shouldn't it?)
Before I start getting too crazy over this I'm going to return my book for a full refund. I think that everybody should be allowed to make mistakes and fix them later on but not acknowleding them makes people get really angry. Tell the world that these bugs exist and you're working on a solution or, if none is available, offer a full refund to everyone, Apple! That's the ONLY way to handle this!
    MacBook Pro 1.83 GHz, 512MB (week 12) - DOA = Awaiting new one   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

It may be that a fix is not even possible as it might mean a complete re-design of the laptop
Why? There seems to be two major issues and they appear to be related.: Whine and heat.
( not at all sure about these here theories folks so bare with me
    1) Whine: Possible that this is do to a low-power state in CPU. If that is the case if you remove the whine you increase the heat.
    2) heat: trust me, there is no room for a larger-stronger fan so there's nothing you can really do exept possibly adding an utility app to increase fan output (but that would create additional fan whine adding to the other whine cuz you need that to reduce the heat-oh great)
So I would'nt hold my breath for a fix.
note: It may be possible to undervolt the cpu a little but I really don't think Intel would allow this or if it's even possible with these versions of Yohan.

  • Error: "Conduit Manager quit unexpectedly" during Mac Hot Sync

Hello!  After many years of successfully hot-syncing my Palm m500 to my various Macs, i'm suddenly getting an error message every single time my Hot Sync tries to sync the Datebook data:
The application Conduit Manager quit unexpectedly.
Mac OS X and other applications are not affected.
Click Relaunch to launch the application again.
i've already tried reattaching the USB cables and the Palm m500 into the cradle, and rebooting my Mac several times, and removing the "com.palm.xxxx.plist" files and the "Palm Desktop Info" file from my users/library/preferences folder.   and i've spent several hours cruising these forums but nothing has worked.  I've tried hot synching about 10 times in the last 12 hours but i keep getting this same error.
i also tried slowing down my hot sync by pressing the Shift key on my Mac during the entire hot sync, but i still get this error:
    Conduit Manager:  Unexpected error #-111
i tried to paste my full log report below but i ran into the 20k character limit for this form.  since it looks like it's "Thread 4" that is causing the crash, i've deleted other parts of the log report but can send those to you in another posting if that would help.
thanks in advance for any help you can offer!  i love my Palm m500 as I much prefer it to Apple's iCal system and would like to fix this problem so I don't need to abandon my Palm!

    Post relates to: Palm m500
    Post relates to: Palm m500

I had the same problem syncing my Palm TX with 10.5.8.  After being without my Palm for 3 weeks, I bought Snow leopard, and all was fine again.  I found out at an Apple store that 10.5.8 was full of propblems, and this was one of them.
Fast forward: I've been using 10.6 ever since it was released, happily syncing away with my Palm ... until Friday night (2 days ago), when it stopped working, and then I discovered that Palm does not and will not support Mac OS 10.6.  So I'm urgently trying to migrate everything on Palm to my iPod Touch, exporting to 10.4 on an old iBook, since it will still sync with it, then moving the data to my iMac's 10.6, and then syncing with my iPod Touch.
I'm working on the problem now, and have my Schedule migrated, but now need to get my ToDo, Address Book and Memos done.
The 10.6 Address Book (v5.0.1) doesn't support the Palm's custom fields like Tiger's Address Book (4.0.6).  I can't yet find a way to export the Palm's ToDos in a format that iCal can consume, and Notes on the iPod (for my Memos, possibly) is not supported on 10.6 yet for my iPod Touch.
1 step forward, 3 steps back, so far; but absolutely necessary, now that Palm has withdrawn from the Mac market.
Any ideas on these 3 problem areas, from anyone, would be most welcome.

  • [mac] hot to launch PDFs/AVIs from a mac player?

    Hi all,
I need to create a movie with Flash that runs on Macintosh.
I can do this easily with Windows, using lots of solution
    provided by
    developers around the word.
I expecially use a little exe file that I can configure to
    run any
kind of file (PDF, AVI, DOC) from inside a flash movie just
    calling
the installed app that will then open the required file.
Doing this I can let the user open a PDF in acrobat (if
    installed)
    directly from the flash movie.
But I don't know how to do this on a mac system (OSX).
    can you help me?
    TIA
    tony

I have followed your advice, but the problem persists.
I trashed the application, the original user account preference files, the hard drive Library application support files for Photoshop Elements, and everything else Spotlight could find with Photoshop or PS2 in its name.  I created a new user account, installed the application from the CD, and repaired Permissions.  Launching the application brought up the splash screen, loaded all of the paintbrushes etc., then "The application Photoshop Elements quit unexpectedly".  The Report file begins with the following information:
         Command: Photoshop Elements 2.0
         Path:    /Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 2/Photoshop Elements 2.0/Contents/MacOS/Photoshop Elements 2.0
         Parent:  WindowServer [14119]

         Codes:      KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000
and goes on to list more details in Unix-speak.
Do you have any other ideas to try?

  • Why can't I transfer all my old Mac Pro stuff onto my new Mac Pro?

Just got this brand new Macpro and all I'd like to do is to copy all that is on my older Macpro onto the new one. Migrating used to be easy but now with both computers using Mavericks 10.9.2, and following all that is explained about Migrating, it just doesn't work. I think (not absolutely) that it would have transferred from my Time Machine, but it said it would take 120 hours! Did not seem to make sense to me so I cancelled. I'm trying to do it over wi-fi. The signal is very strong. What's going on?

First, you can't really rely on the time estimate it gives. That's based on an average of the number of files and the sizes of the files it's copied so far. That number will jump around as the copying proceeds. That said, wifi is a slow way to go. You'd be better off plugging both Macs into Ethernet for the duration of the transfer or wiring them directly. Wired is always faster than wireless.

  • IBook power - hot stuff

Okay, I noticed something a little bit alarming recently.
You know how the power adapter has that colored ring on it? Turns green when it's charged, amber when it's charging.
So, we've got Go and Slow. But sometimes I get the Red light. I couldn't help noticing last time I got the red light (which goes to Amber if I turn it just right), the cable from the power supply to the plug got pretty hot. As in, soft (but not melting) rubber insulation hot.
Got it back to amber, and it cooled right down.
So, any thoughts on what's causing this, and how to stop it? I already worked out the "don't let it get hot like that" part for myself...
    Thanks

    Hey Brett,
I've done a fair bit of research and don't find an exact reference to the red LED on the power adapter.
However I've seen this happen and it's always a bad sign. It seems to indicate a short in the power input circuit so that would be the DC in board or the power plug itself. Replacing either is simple and of course absolute necessary. Given what you experienced this would seem the first warning of the power cord catching fire.

  • Hot Stuff

Hi, my MBP is based at home and I leave it connected to mains all the time while I run FCP software. Problem is it's just recently started to get really quite hot below the screen, and it sounds like a fan is coming on now and again - all this after only 2 or 3 hours of operation. Is it wrong to leave plugged in to mains all the time ? If I disconnect occasionally - will this cure the overheating problem ? It lives on a wooden desk, and I even have it slightly raised with a bit of BluTac in each corner to aid airflow.
    Any advice please - Thanks

+*Hi, my MBP is based at home and I leave it connected to mains all the time while I run FCP software*+
FCP is likely the cause of your system being warm/hot. Depending on what you are doing in FCP, it can require quite a bit of resources and you can expect it to get warm. If you are pushing your system that hard, about the only thing that unplugging it would do is cause your charge in your battery to run down very quickly. It's natural for your system to get hot when pushed hard. If it is running stable, you should be okay.

  • New meaning to "Hot Stuff"...

I've had my Razr Maxx for probably 2 months now and this is a first. I took it out of my holster this morning to connect it to my PC at work. As it came out of the holster, I noticed it was extremely hot - so hot, I had to put it down quickly. This has never happened before! I logged in and checked to see if anything might be cranking the processor up but nothing out of the ordinary was running. I shut it OFF and turned it back on - it immediately cooled down and has been normal ever since. I am wondering what could have happened if I hadn't pulled it out when I did? Hot enough to burn up? It's a bit scary... anyone else had this happen yet?
    Thanks in advance...

  • New mac user concerned about my mac hot monitor, read something about checking the activity monitor but I don't know what to do from there'

    Please help

If your system is <90 days old, or you have Applecare, call Apple for support. Here are the numbers.
If over 90 days and you don't have Applecare, install iStat Pro to see what is heating up. You can bring up Activity Monitor (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) to see if any programs are churning the CPU keeping it busy with 20% to 30% + usage. Be aware that the newer systems run hotter than older systems, and this is generally OK. Also, the ambient temperature of the room has a lot to do with system component temps.

  • Does Mac Mountain Lion download stuff in the Background?

Haven't noticed it till date. But, today I started using a limited bandwidth internet plan so I was looking at the traffic. Strangely, there was constant download/upload activity.
Are there any known cases of Mac downloading stuff in the background?
Is there any way to measure this?
P.S: I disabled automatic update downloads

Any client on a network, including wireless clients you don't know about, could be consuming bandwidth. Wi-Fi networks must be protected with WPA2 security. If yours isn't, change the security setting on the access point. If it's already set that way, change the password. Make it a string of at least 8 random characters, including digits and upper- and lower-case letters. The password is saved in the keychain and you don't have to be able remember it; in fact, you shouldn't be able to remember it.
You make these changes in AirPort Utility, if the access point is an Apple device, or in a web browser otherwise.
If the network or the password was insecure, and bandwidth use returns to normal after securing it, you can be pretty sure the problem was caused by intruders.
But intrusion may not be the issue. Most often BitTorrent, iCloud, Dropbox, or some other cloud-data application is involved in cases of mysterious bandwidth use by a Mac. If you use iCloud, uncheck at least Photo Stream andDocuments & Data in its preference pane and see whether there's any change. If you use third-party network backup or file-sync software, disable that. If you use a torrent client, remove it.
Otherwise, there's no easy way to monitor network usage per process using built-in tools. If you're an advanced user and you want to try, see the manual page for the nettop(1) shell command. It may or may not provide the information you're looking for.
The third-party products Rubbernet and Little Snitch are supposed to record network usage by processes. I can't vouch for them. Both were available as free trials, the last time I checked. I suggest you uninstall either one when the question has been answered.

  • Calendar on Mac and MoMe now on iphone - how to remove the Mac ones?

I guess 3.0 has this nifty feature where you can sync ical from the computer AND through MoMe. Well, that's great but now I've got duplicate calendars.
I just want to get rid of the Mac ical stuff on my phone. I ONLY want MoMe ical.
In itunes I do not have anything checked for under Calendars. Nothing, nada, zip. It even says "Your calendars are being synced with MoMe...yadda, yadda, yadda. Perfect!
But when I open ical on my phone I see selections for the following:
    All Calendars
    (On My Iphone)
    All on My iPhone
    (.Mac (MoMe))
    All .Mac
long list of all my ical calendars
I'd like to just have the .Mac/MoMe listing. I don't know what the On My iPhone thing is but if I make a new event, I can select it as a category from a calendar that I got form syncing to my Mac. Not via MoMe.
    I'm so confused!
I've lost events with this because I quickly added an event, expected it to show up on my Mac via MoMe, but it never did. It never would either because it was entered in a calendar that didn't sync with MoMe. (unless I did a sync with my 'puter)
So I'd like to get rid of all references to anything other than the MoMe cals. When I look at my calendars on my phone, I should ONLY be able to choose from the .Mac list. Anyone know how to do this?
    Thanks!
    Denise

Deselecting sync calendars under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences followed by a sync with iTunes probably won't delete the calendars/calendar events transferred to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process.
    If not, do the following.
On your iPhone go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    Select your MobileMe account.
Turn Calendars off for over the air syncing with your MobileMe account. A warning message will be provided indicating that all calendars and calendar events downloaded to your iPhone over the air will be deleted from your iPhone.
After this process is complete, check your Calendar. If the calendars and calendar events that were transferred to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process remain on your iPhone, and they probably will remain, turn Calendars back on for over the air syncing with your MobileMe account. A merge prompt will be provided, which you want to select.
    This will resolve it.

  • Partitioning and Installing Windows 7 with Mac OS X Lion

    Hi
after failing seriously with the partitioning after installing Win 7, I hope that I will find some help from the scratch...
I want to install OS X Lion with Win 7.
3 Partitions with Mac are needed and 1 fro Windows.
I got 750Gb on my Mac Book Pro.
    Disk should look like this:
    100Gb Main Partition (Mac)
    200Gb Documents Partition (Mac)
    300Gb Stuff and Games (Mac)
    150Gb Windows 7 Partition
I tried now to create a 100Gb Partition for Mac and a 150Gb Partition for Windows 7.
After Installing the Mac OS, I was trying to add the 2 other Partitions, but it already telling me that i'm gonna loose my Windows Boot when I change the Partitions. I pressed ok and restarted with the windows 7 DVD for the recovery, which wasn't working due to version incompability -.- (I installed Windows from that DVD)
What steps should I make to get this to work? Some guys says that it not gonna work, but a friend of min has 3 mac partitions and a windows. Sadly he can't remember the way to this setup
    Thank you for the help

  • How do I read a book from iBooks on my Mac?

I've been wondering about this for some time now.
I can write, make movies, read Amazon books and B&N e-pub books, watch streaming video, get on the internet with all my Macs and iPod and iPad -- all my book purchases are saved in iTunes on my Mac -- but, when it comes app software for my Mac Pro to read the books that Apple sells in iBooks, I cannot do it!!!
BUT! with Amazon, I can download the book, read it on my iPod, iPad, Mac Pro -- via internet or from my desktop -- watch or stream a movie on my Mac, buy stuff from Amazon on my Mac and iPod/iPad... store my books online or back them up to my Mac...
It is very frustrating to say the least.
My friend's son has a iMac.
But, they don't buy books from the Apple iBook Store because, as she puts it, "Why would I bother? My son has an iMac, but not an iPad, and he can't open the iBooks on his iMac, so I buy books from Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Then he can read them on a big, beautiful, sharp 27" screen. Plus, he can easily make the lettering bigger, if needed. Then, he can do whatever else he needs to do on his computer, all while running several programs all at once... not something that can be done on a $500-$700 iPad."
Apple needs to fix this, don't you think?

Reworded for Macbook, iTunes, and iPad feature enhancement/software and hardware compatibility feedback and submitted this to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback  I did not see iBooks listed as an Apple iOS app for direct feedback.
In addition to backing up and syncing through iTunes, please provide the ability to seamlessly open and read iBooks (a.k.a. Apple iBook Textbooks and interactive ebooks and other epub/pdf content saved in iBooks) and content purchased through the iBookstore on MacOS computers, not just iOS devices.  While the new MacbookPro with retina display and other systems are essential for various computing tasks, referencing and reading books without shifting to another device is a major purchasing and productivity factor. I can currently do this with Amazon, Google, VitalSource, and Nook books.  The ability to seamlessly move between reading books on an iOS device, MacOS computer, or within a Web browser and have integrated highlighting, notes, social sharing and other features sync between all three is highly desirable.  Without this option, I will generally need to purchase books and other content from these sources or directly from the publishers, but not Apple.
    Thank You.

  • .exe projector file for PC works fine, but extracted .hqx for Mac won't open when on CD

I'm using Flash MX, AS 2, Projector 6, working on a PC.
I saved two versions of my project -- one .exe for Windows and one .hqx for Mac.  The .exe works fine when burned onto a CD.  When opening the .hqx from a CD on a Mac, I got a message that the file is on a locked volume.  I discovered that the reason for this is that an .hqx is essentially a zipped file which has to be extracted, and when a file is extracted, the unzipped files are written onto the same location as the original.  When the original files are on a CD, Stuffit (Mac's zip extractor program) can't write onto that location.
[So if anyone at Adobe looks at these forum posts, let me say that I think its absolutely ridiculous that the Mac version of Flash's projector files have to be extracted in order to be viewed!]
To get around this problem, I saved the .hqx on my PC, put it on a portable hard drive and brought it over to a Mac (because Stuffit for PC converts it into an .exe for PC), and unzipped it.  When I'd test it on the portable hard drive or on a USB drive, the extracted file would work.  When I'd bring it back over to the PC and burn a CD with both versions on it, and then test that CD on the Mac, it wouldn't work.  Can anyone tell me why the extracted Mac version works on a hard drive, but not on a CD?  What do I have to do in order to make a Mac projector file work from a CD?

Windows uses the FAT file system, Macs use the HFS file system. The two are not compatible. If you save a Mac projector file on a FAT file system, it won't be saved properly and it won't work. When you create a Mac projector from a Windows version of Flash, the file will be saved as a compressed .hqx file.
Since you need to use a Mac to create a hybrid CD, when you move that .hqx file to the Mac, unstuff it and then use the resulting file for the CD. It will then run from the CD as expected.
