Mac Insomnia

I have troubleshoot beyond the average user expectations, google for answers and read many forums posts to no avail... and I refuse to believe that I will have to download a 3rd party app to make my iMac go to sleep.
My MacBook has shown similar symptoms but in that particular aspect I've observed that closing the lid does induce system sleep, but the biggest problem is worrying that my iMac will stay up for days.
At the beginning I concluded that this insomnia was due to the Widget screen being up; but then I realized leaving Safari open will not allow the computer to go to sleep. Recently, I made a new partition for Bootcamp and removed and reinstalled some software --including reinstalling OS X; then I realized that with no Apps running (even after a reboot), bluetooth disabled, USB printer shutoff, no network wake, FileSync not running, etc., the display will sleep as specified in the Power Management options, but it will not go into system sleep.
There has to be a way I can at least tell what process is not allowing this, but there has to be a fix for this --this shouldn't be this complicated.

Check your Energy Saver settings to make sure they are correct.
See if you can put your computer to sleep w/o shutting down w/your remote.

  • /usr/sbin/update VS. auto sleep

    Hi all,
After having tried ALL (believe me...) hints first I finally discovered the reason my iMac G5 (10.4.4) refuses to autosleep after inactivity. Well, sort of.
There is a process "update", started by "initd" via the file "/etc/rc" which contains the line "/usr/sbin/update". (See man pages for details on that.) Using "fs_usage" I discovered it repeatedly killed writes data to the disk which prevents autosleep. With the update process my system can sleep now.
However, the question is now "Why does update have to write at all?" In one session I disabled almost everything I found, and update still would prevent the system from autosleep. "update" is there for a reason, and I feel a little bit uncomfortable with disabling it. Is it a change in Mac OS X or is other software in my system the culprit? Any other hints?
    Regards, Uwe

    Hi V.K.,
in the recent days I tried a lot of things (there are also other threads about the auto sleep problem where differnt reasons are being discussed).
I don't think there exists "the one and only" reason for Macs' insomnia. But it looks like in most cases running processes disturb the auto sleep.
I recognized my Mac's problem is user-indepedent. Therefore a "global process" must have been the trouble maker.
It might be the case that the ntpd settings have been corrupted (is that possible? To be honest, I don't know.) It might also have been a problem with Little Snitch. I reset LS's rules recently and had to allow the ntpd access again. In this time period I recognized the auto sleep problems but I don't know if there is a correlation between these processes.
Nevertheless De- and Reactivation of ntpd solved the issue for me.

  • Correlation: no auto sleep & console entries?

    Hello.
Recently I get only very sporadic auto sleeps with my iMac (OS 10.5.6).
While looking for possible causes I found the following entry in the console (every 15 minutes):
    08.01.09 12:30:25 /usr/sbin/ocspd[228] starting
    08.01.09 12:45:33 /usr/sbin/ocspd[242] starting
    08.01.09 13:00:40 /usr/sbin/ocspd[258] starting
    08.01.09 13:15:48 /usr/sbin/ocspd[269] starting
Might this be the reason for the iMac not to go to sleep?

  • Power Mac with Insomnia

Suddenly, my Mac refuses to go to sleep. It keeps trying, automatically, but a second later, fans whirr and the screen relights. I can't even make it go to sleep manually, it simply refuses and powers back up. I have no idea what's causing this, since I've not added any new apps or programs. HELP! I've had this Mac for several years -- is it just overwhelmed? It has run beautifully so far.....

Thanks to both Carolyn and Malcolm. Carolyn, I was able to locate two of the files you listed and dumped them -- no effect on the insomnia issue. Then I decided, to **** with it, and lugged the tower to the Apple store and the so-called Genius. Wouldn't you know it, Malcolm, but as soon as the tower was hooked up to a store monitor, keyboard and mouse, I was able to put the system to sleep. I figured the silly thing simply needed a car ride, like an infant. Genius suggested the same thing you did -- plug in all my peripherals one by one since it didn't seem to be a software problem. Back home, I plugged in the monitor, mouse and keyboard and presto! Problem back. I unplugged keyboard and monitor and plugged the mouse into the monitor -- same problem. I switched my old Pro Mouse with my daughter's Mighty Mouse and was able to put system to sleep. How odd. OK -- maybe the fault lay with my old keyboard and mouse which have had many years of abuse, including liquid spills and crumbs. Off to the store for new keyboard and mouse. Back home, plugged in all peripherals, including new purchases, booted up system and put to sleep. Same old problem. Now I'm really confused and irritated. To cut a long evening of multiple variations short, I finally discovered that if I plugged my new mouse into the monitor and plugged everything else into the tower, I was able to put system to sleep. Is that crazy? If anyone can explain to me what's going on, I'd be thrilled. Thanks in advance.

  • Mac Mini has Insomnia

When I put my Mini to sleep it wakes itself back up. Sometimes after just a few seconds, sometimes after an hour and sometimes (not very often) it stays asleep. It doesn't seem to care whether I leave any programs running or not. I have Time Machine turned off.
I use this computer as a music server and the only programs I ever use are iTunes and VLC.

The sleep function will stir anytime it judges movement, so if you are moving the Mac-mini around at all, or simply nudging the keyboard or mouse, whether they are Bluetooth or not, this, too, will wake it up. I had this problem for a while when I realized that it was the vibration from the bass in my stereo speakers that was rousing my Mac-mini each time I put it under.
If this continues to be a problem for you, you may want to try installing something like the DeepSleep application widget (free on axoniclabs.com). This will not only put your M-mini to sleep, it will drop it into a deep, deep hibernation.

  • Insomnia - - My Mac won't SLEEP

    Hi folks,
I just re-installed OS 10.5.4, ... and began to have a couple buggy behaviours:
Primarily, my computer won't respond when I try to put it in SLEEP mode.
Also, there is a funky little 1/4" square that appears in every window that opens. Clicking & dragging over it makes it go away, but it then reappears on the next open window.
p.s. In an attempt to 'fix' these anomolies, I downloaded the upgrade to 10.5.8 but this didn't help.
Any ideas ????? (This is my second post... with no responses).
    Thanks,
    P

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is Apple's KB article HT1776 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB card.
Also, here is Apple KB article TA2469 about PCI cards and sleep.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
    Check the printer queue!"
Allan Jones says "sometimes there is Network activity: launch System Preferences > Energy Saver > "Options" tab and uncheck "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access."
    Good Luck!  DALE

  • My Mac Mini (Server edition) has insomnia!

    Greetings!
Let me begin this by clarifying that, while I have a Mac Mini Server (mid 2010), I purchased it for the hardware and do not use it as a dedicated server, hence why this is actually a problem for me. Now that that's out of the way, the problem:
Up until this morning my Mini has slept fine whenever I manually put it to sleep via the Apple menu. This morning, however, when I tried to put it to sleep before leaving for work, it seemed to sleep for about one minute (at least the screen was dark and the light was pulsing), after which it suddenly sprang back to life. It did not even ask for my password as it should after emerging from sleep. At first I thought it might have had something to do with the FireWire drive I had connected to it, so I disconnected it and tried again. Same thing happened. After work I tried a third time just for kicks, and after appearing to sleep for one minute and then waking up again I checked the console. Here is what I found:

The last bit about Entourage caught my eye, but I had put my computer to sleep successfully with Entourage running in the background plenty of times in the past (and the problem persists even after quitting Entourage and putting the computer to sleep). The only thing out of the ordinary is that, as of last night, I now use OpenDNS. Because of all of the mDNS Responder events in the console, I'm thinking that might be the culprit. Does anyone else agree and might have a solution to fix this? I would prefer to use OpenDNS but if it is going to continue to prevent my computer from sleeping then I suppose I'll go back to using Comcast's DNS servers.

Have you installed any software which provides for remote system access? Such software frequently disables sleep. For example ShareTool from YazSoft and the LogMeIn service.

  • My Mac has insomnia

For a wile now my Mac has been unable to sleep through the night. When I get up in the morning, it is already awake.
What is causing this and how can I fix it? I've reinstalled Tiger and that didn't help.

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
Here is Apple doc.#303698 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
Also, here is Apple doc.#305262 about PCI cards and sleep.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.

  • Mac has insomnia. Keeps waking up from sleep.

I have had problems with my various Macs awakening randomly. I had a core2 duo iMac and now I have an i7 iMac, and it seems that I have a pattern. I sleep the computer and it comes on suddenly. Sometimes it goes off, but other times it stays on. I have set up the computer to go to sleep after 25 minutes: both the display and the computer. I have checked "put hard disks to sleep when possible".
I have tons of RAM and am running Mavericks. I run Parallels desktop too. I have a first generation time capsule and a 2Wire DSL modem.  The 2Wire has wireless capabilities, but I just have it feeding the time capsule with a single ethernet cable. My wife's macbook Air wirelessly and automatically backs up to the time capsule as well. I have a brother wireless laser printer and an HP wireless inkjet printer. I plug in a Denon audio receiver via ethernet to the time capsule. There is a ROKU box that connects wirelessly to my network. I don't have file sharing turned on, but I do have dvd/cd sharing checked. I don't have any other remote management protocols set up.
After I upgraded my computer to a new (used) iMac, I was dismayed to find the problems persisted. I have been scratching my head and wondering whether it could be the time capsule or the 2Wire that is the problem? I have not tried disabling time machine for either computer to see if that was the issue. I have not unplugged the time capsule and just used the 2Wire modem to trouble shoot.
I know there are certain things that can be queried via Terminal, but I don't know enough to choose what to type in. I sometimes want to tear my hair out when the computer suddenly coms on in the middle of the night, or when I can tell it has been on for hours in the morning, by touching the iMac and feeling it to be very warm.
    Jim

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
    Step 1
Take all the steps suggested in this support article. That's the starting point for any further effort to solve the problem. Skipping any of those steps may mean that the problem won't be solved. Note that, as stated in the article, the computer  will not sleep if Internet Sharing is enabled.
    Step 2
    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Accessibility ▹ Speakable Items: Off
    Step 3
    Select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Bluetooth ▹ Advanced...
    and uncheck both boxes marked
Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup if...
    Step 4
    Reset the SMC.
    Step 5
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 6
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 7
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

  • Home sharing on iTunes 11.0.4 is keeping my mac awake...help?!

    Hi All.
After upgrading iTunes to 11.0.4 my faithful Mac mini can't get any sleep. It tries, but as soon as it sleeps something wakes it back up again within seconds. Actually what happens is the mac sleeps then about a minute later it wakes for a few seconds and then sleeps again, another minute later and the cycle repeats.
So far i've narrowed it down to iTunes and then to home sharing. If i quit iTunes or disable home sharing the Mac Mini sleeps fine and stays asleep. Load iTunes with home sharing turned on and it's back to its insomnia.
Now i'm not all that clever when it comes to the reading console logs or tinkering in the terminal, but i did manage to confirm this with 'pmset -g assertions' and watching the state of  'PreventUserIdleSystemSleep' change from 1 to 0 and back again as homesharing was turned on and off - it's all fun!
Does anyone have any suggestions or is this something common to 11.0.4? It worked fine before the upgrade.
I have a macbook air which i'm going to have a play with tonight and see if i can replicate the problem there, but if not i'll need help working out how to fix it on the Mac Mini. Hosting my iTunes library is all it has to do in life, without home sharing life has no meaning for it.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi Allen
Many thanks for the links, although i was aware of the sleep proxy and its uses. The problem i'm having does seem to be related to this, although the key difference between what i am (or was) experiencing is the definition of 'occasionally' as mentioned on the page you linked to.
What i was experiencing was the mac mini would go to sleep then 60 second later it would stir, as if being woken to reregister its services with the sleep proxy, then it would go back to sleep. Then around 60 seconds later it would do this again, and so on and so forth until it was fully woken in one way or another.
Now i do seem to have made progress after digging around a little further. I did figure out that it was a bonjour service/ or device that was causing the mac mini to stir And as i mentioned in my previous message this behaviour would cease if itunes was closed or home sharing was turned off. So the only thing on the network that was connected to this was my 2 apple TVs. As a test i unplugged both boxes and put the mini to sleep again. Then i waited and waited and the mini stayed soundly asleep.
I have since plugged the 2 ATVs back in, one at a time, and the mini now seems to be sleeping for around an hour before it wakes, presuming to do the sleep proxy service thingo.
i'm just running another test to prove to myself that it is actually back to a more normal state with both ATVs plugged in, so fingers crossed.
if anyone knows, does this now sound like a normal setup with the way the sleep proxy works?
i suppose i should have done this at the start, but i have 1 airport extreme, and 2 ATVs (and few ipads, iphones and the like all onthe network), if that helps.

  • How to do a manual uninstall of Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro (9.4.4) on my Mac?

    Hi Adobe Acrobat experts,
Can someone walk me through the steps I need to take in order to perform a manual uninstall of Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro on my mac?
I just got Adobe Acrobat 11 on my mac and don't want to accidentally uninstall that in the process, or delete anything necessary for me to run my other CS4 Master Suite applications.
I can't uninstall the normal way and have tried to troubleshoot it in many ways. So the last resort I have is to manually uninstall. I just don't want to mess up my PDFs.
    Thanks so much!

    Hi sandblasta,

  • Uninstall Acrobat 9.0.0 Pro from Mac OS

I have just upgraded my OS to Mavericks, which doesn't work with Acrobat 9 Pro, so I've purchased Acrobat XI and installed it. Now I can't get rid of Acrobat 9 Pro. The uninstaller in that folder doesn't work. When I try to open it, the uninstaller that came with Acrobat XI opens instead and can't "see" the Acrobat 9 folder or app so I can't use it to uninstall 9.
If I need to do a manual uninstall, what files other than the ones in the Acrobat 9 Pro folder in the Applications folder do I need to remove?

    Hi Carolyn,
Please check the doc: http://www.project-insomnia.com/wp/2009/07/22/manually-uninstalling-adobe-acrobat-reader-9 -on-mac-os-x-leopard/
You might want to uninstall Acrobat 11 first and then manually remove Acrobat 9 files as you might inadvertently remove Acrobat 11 files while trying to manually remove Acrobat 9 files.
Both the application share the same folders to save the files and related preferences.
    Regards,
    Rave

  • MacBook insomnia; it doesn't sleep.

My MacBook doesn't go to sleep, unless I press the power button and select Sleep.
Neither in battery mode, nor in AC mode. I tried closing all the opened programs (QuickSilver, Safari, iTunes, iTerm), and put the time to 1 minute to make quick tests. In both AC and battery modes, the screen just goes blank, but the thing is still on (I move the mouse and it's there -- in sleep mode I have to press Space bar or something; I left it there for 7 hours with the blank screen, and the computer was still hot in the morning.... so no sleep).
I run the extended hardware test, and it says everything is OK.
I have had 2 sudden shutdowns this month (always with AC plugged in, computer cold, just turned in, and in 2 or 3 minutes it turns off).
    Any idea?

Solution to No sleep after improper shutdown
Re: MacBook insomnia; it doesn't sleep.
(Use any and/or all of these steps at your own risk
(Warning this will erase your osx volume !!!)
Use only If you are very familiar with the Apple Disk
    Utility,
I have a possible work around.
This may resolve only the "insomnia" issue and, may
forego the “manual reinstall” of all your
    applications, music, document, files, etc..
(this process does take time, but you are making a
    valuable backup)
This will not resolve any random powering off issue.
((BTW just reinstalling osx “with the erase first”
option did also fix the insomnia issue on my MBP.
Though I did spend a lot more time reinstalling all
of my app, docs, and geting all the setting just
right)) hopefully the following workaround will be at
very least much more simple than a full reinstall
    from scratch.
This work around requires an external backup
    hard-drive.
Step 1: First, using Disk Utility Restore(meaning
backup), backup your source "Macintosh" Volume, to an
    external hard-disk Volume (destination).
(this, step 1, may take 2-hours+ for ~80GB of data,
    via FW400 speeds.)
Step 2: Next, hold "option" while Booting, select
external hard-drive Volume. (the external backup
volume you created in step 1)
(You should now have booted into your mac OSX
    external hard-disk backup volume.)
Step 3: From your external macOS volume, use Disk
Utility to erase your "Macintosh" Volume. (the one
inside your Macbook pro ! ).
Step 4: using Disk Utility Restore(now meaning
restore), restore your external backup volume (from
the external Hard-disk source) to destination
    internal "Macintosh" volume.
(This, step 4, may take an additional 2-hours+ via
    FW400 speeds.)
(Use all and/or any of these steps at your own risk
    Good luck.

    Mac OS X (10.4.7)
Solution to No sleep after improper shutdown Re: MacBook insomnia; it doesn't sleep.
    Re: the previous post.
The insomnia issue is probably caused by an "improper shutdown/power loss".
So this workaround will only be permanent, if you resolve the "random shutdown" issue.
As I think the "random shutdown" issue may be causing the "insomnia" issue.
After a "random shutdown" has occurred, causing "insomnia", the workaround will fix the insomnia. (the make this fix permanent though, the random shutdown must be addressed)
Hope this helps clarify (which one created the other, the chicken vs. the egg)
And gets you, at lease closer, to a full (no random shutdowns and no insomnia) solution.
    Take care

  • Reliability of mini-mac G4 ?????

    hi,
How Reliabeis minimac G4 with Built-in airport and bluetooth, 512 mb memory and 80 gb HD.......
since they are cheaper now cuz of new minimacs intels in market.
My Q.. is how good is this machine in terms of wireless networking and in general how will u compare performance of minimac G4 with the new minimacs.
    Advice is appreciated

    Hello Anthony,
My 1.5 GHz G4 seems ok, but with one caveat.
Automated sleep only stops the display, not the CPU,
drives or fan in OS 10.4.6 if Safari, or Eudora or
    Camino etc are open.
Just to clarify, the sleep problem is actually caused by OS X 10.4.x.
The sleep problem is well documented as a symptom that arrived with the introduction of OS 10.4.0. Every kind of recent Mac system was reported to have developed insomnia when users upgraded from OS 10.3.x to 10.4.0.
The problem is something to do with how OS 10.4 handles things. There are a variety of things that you can experiment with to try and get a machine to sleep properly, but they all vary in success rates.
I have found that machines which shipped with OS 10.4.x tend to exhibit this problem less frequently. So, I'm not sure if there is something in the tailored installations for those machines (since they come with special builds of the OS - updated to reflect changes needed when the machine was introduced) that fixes the problem, or not.
I remember that my original iMac G5 would not sleep after upgrading to OS 10.4.0 (and later 10.4.2) from OS 10.3.9.
But, my second iMac G5 which shipped with OS 10.4.1 would sleep fine on it's own.
So, I suspect that something in the custom builds of OS 10.4.x may be responsible for the better sleeping behavior.
There are a couple of things that I have personally observed keeping a machine awake:
    1) a USB hub (device that plugs into your USB ports to provide more ports).
    2) a USB accessory
    3) Using OS 10.4.x's firewall to block incoming UDP connections
    4) having a FireWire drive or device connected
My current Mac Mini (see specs in my system details below), sleeps just fine on it's own. I set it to sleep after 2 hours of inactivity.
I also always leave Safari open and running (to keep my web accounts logged-in - not high security stuff), and never close Apple's Mail, and usually have several other programs running.
But, I also have it set to sleep the drives whenever possible. So, my FireWire drive is already asleep after a couple of minutes of inactivity. So, when the 2 hours roll around, it doesn't interfere.
I do have incoming UDP blocking enabled in the firewall. It doesn't keep this machine awake, but it did on my iMac G5 system (the second one). This would keep the iMac G5 awake because I have a print server on the network (unplugging the print-server would allow the G5 to sleep). Fortunately, the Mac Mini doesn't care, it sleeps fine even with the print server plugged into my network.
And, I don't have a USB hub on the Mac Mini. But, the USB hub would keep my iMac G5 awake.
The only accessories I have plugged into my Mac Mini G4 are:
    1) Envision SVGA LCD monitor (15-inch)
    2) Altec Lansing Series 100 speakers
    3) Apple Keyboard and Mighty Mouse
    4) OWC Neptune 120 GB FireWire Hard Drive
    5) Sony Xtreme DVD-R/RW FireWire DVD-Writer
Anyway, I hope this helps to clarify. I would suspect that your sleep issues are less the computer's defect and more a defect in the Mac Operating System (OS 10.4.x).
Unfortunately, it is Apple's fault either way (since they created both products). So, Apple is definitely accountable for the problem. Just don't expect them to do anything about it.
I would be interested in hearing what the original poster decided to do. I had completely forgotten about this thread. It would be interesting to hear an update
