Mac / Intel / Viewing windows wmv files and windows media

First time Mac user, son gave me the latest G5 / Tiger with the dual intel. Cannot load flip Mac, I get a message that basically tells me that Flip Mac doesn't work with the Mac/Intel set-up as of yet. I also cannot seem to get a Mac friendly version of anything to open wmv. files. I'm not very computer savvy and have virtually no experience with Mac. Simple downloads appreciated. Help an old dog learn a new trick.

Sounds like you've got a great son!
I have little Mac Intel experience to point you directly to a .wmv player, but if you haven't already found it, go to http://www.versiontracker.com for a comprehensive list of software for both Mac and Windows.
If you're willing to be a little adventurous then have a look at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html. VLC is one of my favorite media players and while the site doesn't yet have an Intel release, they are actively working on an Intel version. You can download their testing versions and help them by posting feedback and bug reports.
Hopet this helps! bill

  • How do you view a .wmv file on a Mac?

I would like to know how to view a .wmv file on my MacBook.  Thanks for your assist!

You require the free Flip4Mac plugin for Quicktime.

  • Making Quicktime the default viewer for .wmv files.

Whenever I try to open a .wmv file, my default program is iphoto. I have Flip4Mac and I want to use Quicktime to be the default viewer for it. I know how I can get each file to open with Quicktime, but I want it to be permanent. For instance, I download a .wmv file and I want to double click the new file on my desktop and Quicktime comes up so I can view the video. I figure this is a very simple thing to do, I just don't know where to change it. Please help. Thank you.

I find that this does not work- pilot error I'm sure.
When I right click on a .wmv file and chose "Get Info", a small window appears that has a section titled "Open With".It defaults to "Windows Media Player" and has a drop down window, offering me a choice of "Other..."
When I select "Other" a window opens that lets me chose an application. I select Quick Time Player and hit "Add". QT then populates the drop down window. I then select "Change ALL" which causes another window to open that asks "Are you sure you want all your Windows Media Player documents to open with the application Quick Time Player?". I answer "Continue" and as soon as I do that Windows Media Player is replaced in the Get Info window as the "Open With" choice.
I can't see how to make the change. Help!!

  • I lost flip4mac when I installed mavericks. What is the best way to view windows media?

I can't view windows media since I installed mavericks. I found out that flip4mac didn't install with mavericks. Is there an apple app to replace flip4mac or should I just get another flip4mac. The icon is still there but none of the software seems to be present.

Try VLC media player it seems to play almost any codec.

how do I view backed up files and delete thing I don't need

You can't view individual files contained in the backup.  You can control which apps are backed up, and whether or not the camera roll is included in the backup, by going to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tapping the name of your device under Backups, then looking under Backup Options.

  • Why can't my Mac play wav or wmv files?

I have recently become unable to view and listen to wav and wmv files. I have all the latest updates to Quicktime but, while Quicktime launches, it doesn't play the files. Are there some settings I don't know about? If it became corrupted, wouldn't the updates have fixed that? I can look at Youtube videos, just not the wav and wmv files people send me.
On a possibly related note, it seems that the videos I view on Youtube are jerky - Like my computer can't keep up with the data stream, and skips frames in order to keep up with the sound. I hope I'm making sense. Is the problem with memory (or lack thereof)? I have a bad block, which has been worked around (I did a reinstall). Could that be the cause?
    Thanks in advance.

wmv files: you need to download and install Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft).
YouTube Flash: yes, very likely your oldish Mac is no longer up to it, but:
The latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer can be obtained from here:
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
NOTE: On December 8, 2009 Adobe announced plans to drop Flash Player security support next year for Mac owners whose machines run PowerPC G3 processors.
"Adobe will be discontinuing support of PowerPC-based G3 computers and will no longer provide security updates after the Flash Player 10.1 release," said Adobe in the same advisory that spelled out the seven patches. "This unavailability is due to performance enhancements that cannot be supported on the older PowerPC architecture."

  • HELP!!  I viewed my "backup" files, and now ALL of my photos are no longer "linked" to Lightroom.

I thought I was missing some files, so I viewed my backup files.  I received a "warning" that Lightroom would restart and view my backup files.  I did NOT receive any warning, that there was NO GOING BACK!!  I've tried everything.  I cannot re-link ANY of my photos.  Well, I did just do one, and it told me all the other photos in the folder were corrupt and Lightroom would not be able to edit them (and no, it was not an exported .jpeg file).  Fortunately, I am not concerned about this folder, that's why I tested it.  I was forced to moved all of my photos from my C drive to my D drive because for some weird reason on this computer, my D drive is 5 times bigger and I ran out of room.  When I did that, I was able to relink all the pictures.  Sadly, it didn't keep my Folders, it just relinked them all by date.  That I can deal with, even though it makes finding photos much more difficult, but I wasn't about to try to rename any of them and have to relink again.
Now, I can't relink any of them because it appears in Lightroom that all photos are back in the C drive and therefore, the new photos that I placed on the D drive are not there, and nothing will relink, period, not even the ones that were originally on my C drive!
I have never been so aggravated in my life.  I LOVE Lightroom capabilities.  I have version 2.3.  When I look it up on the online help, all I get is how the photos are in whatever location they were saved, but they are linked, etc.  I already know that part.  I seriously wish I had NEVER looked at my backup files.  I don't think I'll bother backing up stuff anymore because apparently looking at the backup messes up everything.
I fully anticipated that I would be able to go back, choose my folders on my D drive and have all of my current photos available.  Sadly, not.
My user name should be FREAKED OUT!

Thanks!  I've been practicing deep breathing between yelling at my computer.  I use Windows 7.  I was in my "regular" Lightroom photos, and I couldn't locate some pictures I took last December.  So, I thought, well, why not look at the back up files?  I'm normally excellent at remembering exact steps, but I'm so worried about all of my thousands of photos, I can only explain what I think I did.  I went into Windows Explorer, and chose the backup files.  When I did, I received the warning about Lightroom restarting and loading the backup photos.  I hesitated for a full minute, but thought, well, isn't that what backup files are for?  So, I selected it. Lightroom opened the backup photos without any problem.  But, when I went back, and tried opening the photos that were linked to Lightroom, they were no longer linked.  When I click on the formerly linked photos, they just open in Windows Explorer, not Lightroom.  When I open Lightroom, it has says all the photos are "missing."  All of the folders are listed in my C drive (in Lightroom), not where they'd been moved to on my D drive.  The one photo I relinked, stated the photos in that folder could not be edited in Lightroom.  So, I'm afraid to try to relink anymore of them. Also, as I said, any photos that I originally imported to my D drive are not showing up in Lightroom at all.
I would say, I normally learn software quickly. That was my experience with Lightroom.  I installed it, went through all of the online training sessions, and have loved it.  Admittedly, I'm sure there are features that I don't make use of that many people do, but I'm just a passionate photography nut, not a professional.
The online help basically explains the linking, and even how to relink if you "move" a file, a folder to another location.  It doesn't cover this, or not where I can find it.
I've think I've given up on yelling at the computer, now I just have knots in my stomach about getting photos relinked.  I have probably 80% of them exported, with the adjustments I made, but that does not make me feel one bit better.
    Thanks!!!

  • WMV files and file extensions to upload in OLM

Can you upload .wmv files to be played in OLM? It plays from Windows Media Player in a stand alone mode.
What about pps. files? I saved a power point and uploaded it. It opened but it only showed the slides and I had to start it in MS PPT. So, I tried to save it in PPT Show and I get a bunch of java jibberish. Anyone have experience with either file type?

    Anders,
Are you referring to the properties in the OLM setup? I have not tried to set it to display in a different window, but I will try. I created a new learning object and UPLOADED the video. When opening the file, I get a bunch of java language (jibberish) and the video does not show. Have you experienced that before?

  • Viewing windows media on facebook

Hi on my Mac I can view videos posted on Facebook using Flip4mac however this does not download for IPad so how do I view them, any ideas?

    You're welcome.
    The answer is no.
Windows Media video is a closed/proprietary Microsoft format, and Microsoft has not provided a Windows Media Player app for the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch and will never do so since they quit providing and supporting the same with OS X on a Mac. Flip4Mac would need to provide the same via the App store that is available for download and install with OS X on a Mac. I don't know if Flip4Mac has any plans to do so or if they are able to do so if they wanted to - as in not approved by Apple for whatever reason.
Windows Media remains relatively popular, but is dying on the vine. Even Microsoft is behind HTML5 and H264 now which are open standards for providing video content via the web instead of via a closed/proprietary method such as Windows Media or Flash. This will be slowly changing over time probably even with FaceBook.

  • Everytime I click a link to view a wmv file the save or open dialog comes up. Do this automatically for files like this from now on is checked.

    Firefox 4.0.1 ... I am running XP Home, Sp-3.
The dialog box keeps coming up. In Options/Applications
the item is set to open with the plugin.
Still the dialog come up each time, then the downloader appears and finally windows media player.
My vista machine does not have this problem. I have installed the Windows Media Player Plugin.
    IE opens media player immediately.

If you can't find it there then you will have to rename (or delete) the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.
