Mac Internet Browser Virus?

My browsers (both Safari and Firefox - I checked Firefox, even though I never use it) started acting really funny today. First of all, web browsing has become unbearably slow. Safari, which is usually lightning fast, is hanging on some pages when it tries to load. This includes Google, which is my home page.
More importantly, above each and every page, including this Apple page, there is a space for an ad bar. Sometimes an ad is visible, sometimes it's just blank, and sometimes there is a bunch of code (like an error or something). There is ALWAYS a small black click box with a white X in the upper right corner, which makes the whole space and bar disappear if I click it, but any page reloads will make it come back.
Anytime an ad shows up, before it happens, there is this little yellow or orange bird or chick or duck or something, pacing back and forth, whistling, with that gray spinning mac-like processing wheel in the speech bubble. Either that or the bird is sweeping.
This has to be a virus/malware/spyware, right? I mean, it's obviously some kind of "gotcha mac suckas!!" kind of thing. So how do I get rid of it?? I ran MacScan with no luck. And now I am running iAntiVirus but nothing has shown up yet. Where did this come from and how do I fix it?
Please help!! Thanks!!
P.S. I am new to Macs so I apologize if I seem totally inept/clueless.

I use Firefox, becasue I never put in the time to learn how Safari controls temporary/permanent cookie storage.
Firefox also has a large selection of add-ons to prevent javascript running or "tracking links" inside web pages, etc.

This is my first mac laptop. Do I need internet security/virus protection?  If so, what is recommended?

Additional informaton about OS X security can be found in Thomas Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
In addition to what Bimmer 7 Series has suggested...
Keep Java (not JavaScript) disabled in all your browsers and if you have not installed it yet, don't do so unless you are told that you need it in order to run a critical application or visit a web-site that you must use.
You won't need your Firewall turned on as long as you are on a trusted network using a strong WPA2 password for WiFi, such as your home or workplace, but be sure to turn it on when you need to take your MBP to Starbucks or some other public hotspot.

  • Upgrade internet browser for Mac OS 9.1

Howdy. I just inherited an iMac G3 with an OS 9.1 operating system. I was wondering if A) there is a way to upgrade the operating system to something a little more modern, or B) you can suggest an internet browser to use. I'm using Internet Explorer 5 right now, which is of course very old and doesn't work well with many pages. I don't see a later version available for the OS 9.1 on the webpages of Internet Explorer, FireFox or Netscape. Any help you can give me will be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi there,
I am safely driving an iMac 350 with Panther. It is running with 256 MB Ram which is enough to enjoy it but the more the better...
The best you can do is grab yourself an eBay Account, find some SDRam (100 or 133MHz) and a copy of 10.3. 10.3 is surely working and no longer sold by Apple and 10.4 is not suitable due to the 350 slot loader has no FireWire. It is a modern OS that works great. Get a full copy, no reinstall disc from eMac etc.
But there are some things to do before you upgrade to OSX.
First you have to bring your iMac from OS9.1 to OS 9.21 or OS 9.22 by installing this update: http://download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Apple_SoftwareUpdates/ (browse for your the language of your installed OS).
Then install the new Firmware. This is very important. The Firmware updater is only running on OS9.2 and you have to update if it is not already on Version 4.1.9. Look into System Profiler in the Apple menu for that information. If you can catch a copy of OSX 10.2 (Jaguar) the Firmware updater is on the discs (not on later versions!). Or ask a friend if you know one having that 10.2 CDs for help.
The Firmware can also be downloaded from Apples download site.
If you don't update and install OSX your iMac can decease when restarting due to a bug in certain FW versions. I was on the lucky side, it was working without because noone told me to do it before installing. I did it afterwards and the IMac is still working.

How can I reset my Mac to default settings? Or how can I reset it to a prior date? My Mac has a virus and I would like to get rid of it. I would appreciate your help concerning this matter.

To restore it follow these instructions: What to do before selling or giving away your Mac.
    Before you do the above check out the following;
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, AdwareMedic, or Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

  • Can't Open more than One Internet Browser at a Time

I bought a Toshiba laptop this past spring which I use, offline, at the office.  i've had a problem with it since the day I hooked it up to the internet the first time.  I can't open more than one internet browser at a time.  Windows 7.  I had need to get online with it today and had forgotten about this problem.
I called Toshiba and they wanted to sign me up to some fee-based service.  They said, without checking anything (or even asking me who I am, or what my computer serial number is) that I had a virus.  Is there a virus going around that causes this problem?  IF so, how could I possibly get it considering I bought this computer in a sealed box?
My AV software does not pick up any viruses.  I use Avast.
    Can anybody help me?
    Thanks.

There's a handy reference for keyboard shortcuts here:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Keyboard-shortcuts
That Windows key turns out to be useful, try Windows-D to show the desktop
To open a new browser window, Ctrl-n while in the browser will probably work, or it your browser supports tabs, try Ctrl-t

  • Internet browsing ludicrously slow after upgrading to Mavericks

    Hi All,
I wonder if someone could possibly offer some suggestions please.
Everything was fine and running sweetly on ML.
After upgrading to Mavericks, Internet browsing has become ridiculously slow.
Safari, Chrome and Firefox all exhibit the same problems.
Spotlight isn't indexing, and nothing else is 'hogging' any resources.
There are no issues with my routher or modem ad my WindozePC works just fine.
I have seen posts by people recommending clearing the Cache and Preferences files.
Within these folders though, are settings I don't want to lose. (reg info for software etc.)
Due to geographical restrictions, a trip to the Genuis Bar isn't an option.
Could someone please offer some advice?
    Many thanks in advance.

Hold down the Option key while emptying the Trash.
As for your Mac running slower... make sure there's enough free disk space.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.

  • Help!!!!! How do I find out if my Mac has a virus

Help!!!!!! I was searching the web and some window popped out (Apple window) recommending that I download something to do with antivirus. I guess the website that I was about to visit had a virus. I clicked ok and the next thing I know some things started popping out that the website I guess had a virus and that (trojan and other stuff) oh and some window stuff popped out. However, I just pressed clear on everything quit Safari and nothing else has happened. How do I know if my Mac got a virus for sure. So far everything is fine but I just want to make sure. Anybody please, any suggestions!!!!!!
    jarispe

That is web-phishing. You should avoid such sites. You don't have a virus. Turn on your browser's ad blocker which may help prevent such pop up windows from occurring.

  • Beating a dead horse: Access Time Capsule files w/ an internet browser $

I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but I have spent 2 days and countless hours looking up how to access my TC using an internet browser. I've read about port fwding and dynamic vs. static IPs. I cannot figure this out. If someone could help me and actually get it to work, I would be willing to pay them a reward for there services thru paypal. I don't want to sign up for Mobile Me or pay for any monthly subscriptions. I just wanna be able to access my TC and it's files where ever I am using an internet browser. Here's what I've got:
MacBook 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Mac OS 10.6.4
Verizon Fios router model MI424WR-GEN2 w/ a dynamic IP
My TC is connected by ethernet to the Verizon router which enables me to use the WiFi on the TC
Do I have to sign into my Verizon router and change setting?
I'm pretty network illiterate so a good step-by-step would be great.
Thank so much to whoever can help me.

After all the setting have been put in, I'm getting an error that won't let me update the TC. It wants me to correct 2 problems. "The DHCP range you have entered conflicts with the WAN IP address of your Airport wireless device. What's that?
This error message is due to the fact that the TC is performing as a router (its default) and not as a bridge (as it should be) because it is downstream of your Verizon-provided router.
I apologize as I just realized when I first responded to you, that I had assumed that the TC was the only router in your network configuration. As such I had provided you with instructions based on that assumption.
As such, at least two things need to change in the instructions that I provided: 1) The Verizon-supplied router is your main Internet router and it is the one that needs to be configured for Port Mapping/Forwarding, not the TC, and 2) The TC should be reconfigured as a bridge. (ref: AirPort Utility > Select the TC > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)).
So I used the "with Time Capsule password", was that right?
    Yes, that would be correct.
    Here are the "adjusted" instructions:
AirPort Utility > Select the TC
o Note the value of the IP Address. This is the IP address of the TC that was assigned by the Verizon-supplied router. We are going to want to change this to a static IP address. For now, just note what IP address range it is in, i.e., 10.n.n.n or 192.168.n.n, etc.
Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection
o Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
    Manual Setup > Internet > TCP/IP
    o Configure IPv4 = Manually
o IP Address = select an IP address just outside of the range provided by your Verizon router. For example, if the router is supplying IP addresses in the range of 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.50, enter 192.168.0.51 here.
    o Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
o Router Address = This would be the LAN-side IP address of your Verizon router. Most likely it is 192.168.0.1
o DNS Servers = you would need to get these from your ISP, or just use the OpenDNS servers
o Domain Name = you can leave this blank
Manual Setup > Disks > Files Sharing tab
    o Enable file sharing (checked)
o Secure Shared Disks = With Time Capsule password
o AirPort Disks Guest Access = Not allowed
o Share disks over Ethernet WAN port (checked)
Manual Setup > AirPort > Base Station
o Enter a Base Station Password and verify it in the Verify Password box.
o When you have made all the changes, click Update.
Port Mapping instructions would be specific for your Verizon router. If you don't already, you may need to download a copy of the User Guide for this router in order to configure Port Mapping properly. The key is that the IP address for the port mapping would now be the private static IP address that you assigned to the TC. The Public & Private ports would be the same.

  • What is the FASTEST Internet Browser for OSX? (2014 Edition)

What is the FASTEST Internet Browser for OSX? (2014 Edition)
I'm a tech junkie, I love everything about technology.. especially FAST and EFFICIENT technology..
I am currently using Google Chrome, and have nothing bad so say about it.. I like that I can "sign in" to Google Chrome pretty much anywhere (including my iPhone 5s), and instantly have access to all of my Bookmarks and Bookmark folders..
I have seen a bunch of benchmark tests testing a bunch of available internet browsers on OSX.. however, the results seem a bit inconclusive and varying, and some that even support the notion that Safari is now FASTER than Google Chrome.. I'm not sure whether or not to believe it, and I don't really have the time/energy to conduct a series of tests on my own..
What do you guys think? Is Google Chrome still considered the "fastest" when it comes to browsing/downloading?

Has anyone used or have any opinions about Lightning?  I found some positive reviews around, and granted they all mention it's unrefined, they all seem to think it is the fastest.  Great as that may be, before I fork out the $2 I would like to get some more info regarding privacy and security.

Is there a simple guide somewhere?

How is the Mac connecting to the internet (ethernet

Sharing via ethernet connection 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0 - firewalled

    Hi goggp
This is not a Firefox for Android browser question since you are using the stock browser or google chrome ("mobile built in Internet browser,") , correct?
This forum is only for Firefox for Android.
As for the general topic of mobile device security and anti-virus, perhaps this will help as a starting point

  • Are Macs susceptible to Viruses?

I know they are not prone to get them, but are Macs susceptable to viruses, such as the new koobface virus circulating on Facebook?
If so, what is the best antivirus software for the mac?

Well there is a DNS trojan floating on some adult sites (if it asks for QuickTime plugin say NO). Plus if you are in the States then go over to OpenDNS.com and use the service and then sign up for a free account to block known phishing sites (they even block the known Mac phishing site as well as Windows phishing sites) as well as many other sites. They even have a video to show you how to use the service 9it is very easy and will make your browsing a little faster).
Now the one Mac trojan has been countered by a free application DNSChanger Removal Tool. If you feel you really need antivirus protection on you Mac then go the free route with either iAntiVirus Free Edition or ClamXav.
Also never trust a site that asks for you to install a QuickTime plugin. IMHO the only two QuickTime plugin you will ever need are Flip4Mac and Perian.

I'm really excited about this application as it provides amazing functionality as standard.
It's Flock Beta 1 which I had a chance to play with over the weekend. I was so impressed I just had to do a screencast to spread the "Flock goodness" around.
Flock is an astounding browser built on FireFox and features integration with...
