Mac internet sharing but keep same network

I use Mac based internet sharing -- it's great and give my upstairs a strong wireless signal. But can I make that the SAME NETWORK as the main network for content sharing?
Scenario -
Airport Extreme downstairs wifi "MAIN-WIFI
Apple TV upstairs and signal is weak from Airport Extreme accessing MAIN-WIFI (no wired ethernet here)
iMac is upstairs connected to Extreme via ethernet cable. Internet Share to create upstairs wifi, named UPSTAIRS-WIFI
iMac contains large library of home movies
Super strong signal from iMac to Apple TV which is upstairs! Great!
Problem - AppleTV works great for most stuff, but cannot access the home-shared content on the iMac using UPSTAIRS-WIFI created on the iMac! To see the sharing option, I need to connect to MAIN-WIFI which is too weak to use well. It seems crazy that the iMac wifi won't show the shared content that it is homesharing.
Is there a way of internet sharing on the iMac so it's the same network and therefore would homeshare the iTunes content on it's own wifi signal?
Thanks

Since both your AppleTV and iMac are upstairs and the iMac at least is connected to the Airport using a cable, why not use a switch? A 4-port gigabit ethernet switch can be quite inexpensive (check newegg.com) - that would connect to all three devices and effectively share the same network.

In Firefox 11, how do I clear temporary internet files, but keep history?
You can email me the answer at (Email removed by mod)
    Thank you!

I'll go ahead and explain it since you said the link wasn't working for you:
    1. Open up Firefox. In the upper left hand corner, click the orange Firefox button.
    2. Inside the menu that drops down, click on Options, then go to the "Advanced" tab in the upper right hand corner of that smaller window.
    3. Inside that window, you should see some smaller tabs, one will be "General" another "network" etc. Click Network.
    4. Inside the Network tab, under "Cached Page Content" click the "Clear Now" button. That will remove the cache (which is the same as temporary internet files in Internet Explorer).
Let me know if that helps you out.

how do I delete photos from camera roll but keep same photo in album

You can't. The albums that you created on the iPad do not actually contain copies of the photos, but merely pointers to those photos. If you remove the photos from the camera roll, they will be removed from the iPad. Albums on the iPad are simply for your own organization on the device. Those albums cannot be imported to your computer either, since the photos do not exist in the albums.

  • Multiple versions of Shared Variables on same network

I have 2 seperate reactors working on the same network each deploying ~50 shared variables (different names on each process) communicating with LV 8.5RT running on FP hardware.  One of the reactors is requested for new features and to be upgraded.  Is it possible to heve 2 different shared variable engines (8.5 and 2010) and versions on the same network and client computer, or am I asking for trouble.

  • Trying to use Internet Sharing, but it keeps turning off.

    Hello all,
Alright, so I'm in a dorm room that connects to a wired ethernet network using 802.1X authentication. My MBP does that just fine. The only problem is getting my Xbox 360 online. The Xbox does not support 802.1X authentication, and the only thing the school said I could do was use a second ethernet port on my computer and Windows ICS. Of course, I know that Apple also has an ICS type thing of it's own through Internet Sharing.
I'm using the Linksys USB200M USB-Ethernet adapter as my second ethernet port. I've tried connecting to the internet using it and it works great.
The only problem I'm getting is keeping the Internet Sharing on. Everytime I turn it on, Share FROM Built-In Ethernet, and check mark the Ethernet Adapter (en3), the thing won't stay on. I'll change them menu, go back, and it's turned off.
I've searched for an answer, which required me to delete the com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist out of Library/Preferences. This DID NOT WORK.
I would really hate to have to boot into Windows Vista to use my Xbox 360, as I have been successful doing that. I like to work in OS X more than Vista.
    Thanks for your time,
    Jake

Repair Permissions if you haven't yet, then the other file that can affect that is...
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
But it also holds all your Network info, so...
Reboot after either or both, depending what you decide.

  • Change TV plan but keep same internet

I have bundled FIOS TV and internet (Prime HD and 25/25, no phone) and would like to upgrade my TV but keep the same internet.  Is that possible?  In the upgrade center I'm not offered this option; I can keep the same TV plan and go up or down on my internet speed, but I can't change my TV plan and keep the same internet speed.
Is this on purpose or is it some kind of site glitch? Why can't I do this?

I am sorry, but Verizon no longer offers the 25/25 plan. We will still honor it as you currently have it and you will keep the 25/25 speeds as long as you don't make changes. If you do want to modify your bundle plan, you would have to change it to whatever bundle plans we currently offer.

  • Screen sharing not on same network

I set up my grandmother's new computer at my house, and since we were on the same network, I was able to use Screen Sharing to access her computer.
But now that she's back in Chicago, and not on my network, Screen Sharing doesn't seem to allow me to access her computer.  She's got some issues I could easily resolve if I could screen share.  How can I do this now?

    HI,
iChat or Messages will let you do this is both ends have Screens Names (AIM based) or Jabber IDs.
In Messages or iChat go to the App menu > Preferences > Accounst and use the plus button at the bottom of ther list to add an Account.
In the add Account Pane chose either AIM (Includes some Apple IDs) or Jabber (Includes a Google options in the list).
Google Mail IDs work in the Google choice if you enable "Talk" in the Products at your Google account page (not the web mail login)
Facebook IDs can also be Jabber IDs if you enable "Chat" at their settings.
Use the Preferences > General section to Unlink the gathered Buddy lists (By default they are in one list in Messages).
The window Menu should now display a list of Buddy List accounts that can be displayed.
(Bonjour if Enabled, Jabber, Google and/or AIM).  There is a Yahoo account but this will not Video or Audio Only chats which in turn means no Screen Sharing.
Once you have the Buddy list on Show you can add the Buddy name
(Press the + icon and choose Add Buddy (Or use the Buddies menu > Add Buddy) )
Having the list separate means you can add the right name to the right Buddy List.
Check you can Video chat (Screen Sharing needs the same Internet Connection minimum speed.)
You need to activate Screen Sharing in the Video menu.
This version is really an Audio Chat with a VNC connection along side
For this UPnP needs to be the method employed in the router to open ports as the VNC connection is on a random port.
The System base Screen Sharing  is also a VNC connection.
It follows more closely to the Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) ports as it too, like iChat/Messages uses the ARD engine.
However instead on a Finder > Go Menu > Go to Server and typing VNC:// and a local IP or Browsing for a local computer you need the Public IP address of your mother's Modem.
The modem or router at her end would then need to point that connection to the computer (Port Forwarding).
The same would need to be done in your router for the return stuff.
(most routers have the first 1024 ports (or 65535) open but in this case the Screen Sharing app uses ports above this as does iChat/Messages).
iChat just handles it better once UPnP is enabled.

  • Making internet sharing work (Issue with Network Address Translation)

Trying to use internet sharing to enable a BluRay player to get access to the internet for firmware updates, BDLive, etc.
MacBook Pro is setup with Airport (en1) enabled and connected to the internet.
Ethernet port (en2) is set to "Configure IPv4: Off."
I have configured the /etc/bootpd.plist file with the following configuration as mentioned in http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071223001432304&query=xbox%2B360.
    <key>replythresholdseconds</key>
    <integer>0</integer>
After starting up Internet Sharing, the following is observed:
Ethernet port(en2) is reporting 192.168.2.1 as its IP address in Network Utility but not in the Network System Preferences Pane.
The Mac is responding to the DHCP request from the BluRay player and the BluRay is assigned an IP address of 192.168.2.2/24 with a default gateway and DNS of 192.168.2.1.
So you think there would be success with this but wrong. The system log is reporting that NATD "failed to write packet back (No route to host)" or "failed to write packet back (Host is down) and the connection test on the BluRay player is consistently failing.
Even manually configuring the ethernet port on the Mac is resulting in failure. Is there something else I'm overlooking?
Hoping someone can spread some light on this. Thanks.

So you were able to get it to work then?
I ask because I want to get the Sony BDP-N460 Bluray player for my parents, as it's the only Sony player aside from the Playstation 3 that is Netflix capable. I'm not sure why their other wi-fi enabled player doesn't have Netflix on it. I suppose I could get them a Playstation 3, but they don't really need one.
More than likely that Sony is positioning its products that way so people do go for the PS3 and increase it install base and possibly get you to by a game or two.
I want to connect the player to an old iBook G3 that's running 10.4 and share its connection. I did this successfully with the iBook and my Xbox 360 and wanted to know if it was possible to do so with a Bluray player.
I would bet that you will be able to accomplish this if you were able to get a 360 running through it. Just ignore the Blu-Ray player's test connection tool and try to connect to Netflix. Just play it safe and buy it through a retailer like Amazon where returns are hassle free.

  • Mac / PC's on the same network

So, I'm contemplating adding a mac to my network of PC's w/ Windows XP. However, I am concerned about still being able to access all of my shared documents on the network. Pictures and music seem pretty straight forward, but what happens with office documents? Can I open or modify them using a mac? If I do, will it cause problems opening them back on the PC? If there is a chance of this causing problems, I'm going to stay away from mixing the herd, but am anxious to find out more.
    Thanks!

I will assume that the macs will be running OSx as the Operating System. You will need to have MS Office for Mac installed on your Macs to be able to open the Office documents created on your PCs. You can also modify them and share them with the PCs.
If I do, will it cause problems opening them back on the PC?
Not as long as the documents are saved under the right version. For example, your macs may have Office 2008 and your PC may Office XP. In this example both PCs and Macs would save their files to the earliest version of the two.
If there is a chance of this causing problems, I'm going to stay away from mixing the herd, but am anxious to find out more.
Yes there are issues if the users are quite advanced in your network. Even though Office products for Mac and for Windows are made by the same company, Microsoft, there are times when documents may not be exactly formatted when transferred from one platform to another especially in Word and Powerpoint. There are also functionality issues especially in Excel. The Excel version for Mac (2008 version) does not handle Macros. MS Access is not available for the Mac Office version. In short, there is not a 100% compatibility between MS Office for Mac and Office for Windows.

  • Video Chatting and Internet Sharing at the same time.

Does anyone know why video chat communication cannot be established while internet sharing, or how to remedy this problem by (what I imagine would be) opening/closing/redirecting a few ports?
    More specifically:
I share my ethernet connection through my airport connection to my iphone with the ip host/client scheme of 10.10.0.1/10.10.0.2.
If I don't turn internet sharing off, a video chat connection cannot be established.

Would you want any phone call due to come to you to go to both your landline and your mobile/cell phone particularly if you did not have both together ?
It is mostly about the specific needs of iChat needing to be able to place the computer in a specific place compared to the rest of the Internet.
If you have your Cell phone divert to your Home phone or vice versa how do you know it has also not been answered ?
More to the point how do you know that someone answering a call you have made to them has not been answered by someone else ?
In practice you know only one phone can be answered because of the mechanisms put in place that allows you to make the link between cell and Landline.
It is same for the process used to connect iChat to an iChat Buddy. It makes sure the Network has been set up correctly and is secure.
It is less about making two connections to the internet in the belief it will be twice as fast.
(Check a Download in a web Browser and see if it is really any faster with two connections or if Web Browsing is any faster.)

  • How do you seperate backups, but keep same itunes account

With the new icloud, I am finding that I need seperate back-ups, but want to keep same itunes account. how do I do this?

This has nothing to do with backups. Your iCloud backups are already separate. See at Settings>iCloud>Storage and Backup>manage storage. Your iTunes backups are separated to. Open iTunes go to Preferences>Devices.
Also you can turn off automatic download from settings>iTunes and App Stores on your device.
I don't understand what you wanna do with photos.
If you mean the photos that you sync with iTunes, every device can sync different things. Choose the albums or folder for each device as you like under Photos tab on iTunes sync page.

  • Trying to reload Mac OS X, but keep getting restart in 4 languages

I am trying to sell my 2010 Mac book Pro 15". it has 10.6 right now, but had 10.5 when bought. I am trying to reformat it so that I can sell it, but when I restart with the install DVD I keep getting the message to restart in 4 languages. I have tried restarting with the DVD in and restarting from the DVD's option when you run it while the computer is on. I have also tried holding c when I restart. All roads lead to the same place. Please help!

when I restart with the install DVD I keep getting the message to restart in 4 languages.
It's because your using the 10.5 disk and the firmware has been changed to reject that disk from booting, you need to use the 10.6 disk.
Hold the c or option key down and boot off the 10.6 disk.
If you need to eject the 10.5 disk, hold the option key down while booting, select the 10.5 disk by clicking on the disk icon and pressing eject on the keyboard, insert the 10.6 disk and wait, then click the arrow to boot off the 10.6 disk.
If the 10.6 disk won't boot, try cleaning the bottom with a little bit of rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth to polish, if it doesn't work you can order a new 10.6.3 retail disk from Apple online.
The original is what doesn't work. I just tried SL. all it did was install, but I wanted the option to clear out the HD.
While your booted of the 10.6 disk and looking at the installer, there is a menu at top called Utilities, under that is Disk Utility, use that to select your entire boot drive on the far left, it will have the drive makers name and size,
Then click Erase > Security Option > Zero All Data (good enough, takes some time) or 7x overwrite (longer, stronger) and let it complete.  (all data is destroyed and not recoverable)
When finished quit and install 10.6 from the installer menu. When the machine reboots, it will have the "Welcome" video, just press the power button down hard and that will shut the machine and leave it like that for the next owner.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
How do I securely delete data from the machine?
