Mac iPod charge on Windows PC?

Will my Mac formatted iPod (Nano) charge when connected to a Windows PC?
We all know you can't access a Mac-formatted iPod on a PC and vice versa, but would it still charge if connected? I just want it to charge, that's all.
Or is the charging function OS-dependent as well?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

My granddaughter has a NANO iPod and she lost all of her songs that she had put on her Nano from my iBook when she tried to charge it on a PC. I hope this isn't to late, best of luck. pjbonz

  • What happens when synching Mac iPod to my Windows laptop?

I have only used my 4th gen iPod with my iMac. I also have a PC (XP) laptop with iTunes also. I am on vacation for 2 months with only my PC laptop and want to sync my iPod with iTunes on it to listen to podcasts.
    How do I do that?
What happens when I do that?
What will I lose on it?
Will it be easy to reset it for use with my iMac when I return home?
    Thanks.

    Hello Gatlas,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
    How do I do that?
You will not be able. A PC cannot read a Mac formatted iPod. Upon plugging the iPod in, you will be asked to reformat the iPod for Windows. After doing so, you will be able to sync it with your PC, but reformatting or restoring the iPod will wipe all content from the iPod and set it back to its original default settings.
However, after doing so, you can set it up to "manually manage music and videos" by enabling this option from your iPod's Summary tab. This will allow you to sync content to the iPod from multiple computers. And since it will be formatted for a PC as FAT32, it is cabable of being read and written to by Macs as well. For more help and information on syncing your iPod with multiple computers, see this Apple support document.

  • Old Mac Ipod won't sync with new Macbook (help!)

Ok so this is probably something really easy but I can't for the life of me get it to work.
I got a new Macbook Pro recently and have been building up a new library with my older songs and newer ones I've acquired since the purchase. My problem is when I go to sync my Ipod to the new Mac my ipod automatically goes to the "ok to disconnect" screen without syncing anything. I pressed "sync" and "transfer purchases" and it still goes into disconnect mode, very quickly too.
Its almost as if the ipod is protecting itself and dosen't want to sync to the new Mac for that reason, but that's what I need it to do. Its a 'Mac to Mac' move so its not like I'm putting a Mac ipod into a Windows computer
What do I have to do, or how do I get to a setting that would let my ipod sync successfully on this new laptop? If anybody could help it would totally save the day.
The ipod is an iPod classic 2008-09 120gb

    Hey Ginger795
You would have to tell it to erase and sync the iPod. With a new library you will want to sync exclusively or set up “Manually manage music” on the iPod to make it work properly

  • 2nd Gen iPod will not charge in Windows 7 machine.

My 2nd Gen ipod will sync to iTunes just fine, but will not charge.  Windows 7 shows a problem (yellow triangle) in Devices.  I've got the latest Windows Updates, iTunes version, and iPod update.  It works fine with our Windows Vista machines, just not my newer Win 7 laptop.  What is going on?

Is the iPod being plugged into a high powered USB 2.0 port on the Win 7 machine?  Are there any other USB devices plugged into the Win 7 machine? If so, remove them, reboot the machine and reconnect the Shuffle.

  • Ipod reads in windows but not on a mac

my mac cant read any windows formatted ipods (which unfortunatly happens to be all of the ones i own).
it is not read in finder, or itunes. but it works perfectly fine on a windows computer. I have used it before on a mac, and it worked great, but my logic bored fried and i just reinstalled os X 10.4.10

I see what you mean about your text being screwy. This is one of those situations where you would actually prefer than iWeb convert your text to image. Perhaps you are indeed using a "web-safe" font, but that font must actually be slightly different on Mac vs. PC platforms. Maybe try a different size for your font....maybe one size up? Try to use one of the natural sizes...they seem to go in even numbers.
If all else fails, you can apply a drop shadow to your text or something and let iWeb convert it to a graphic. Might make your site load slower, though.

  • Using iPod both in Windows and Mac at the same Time?

I was wondering if it was possible to use my brand new ipod both in Mac as in Windows without having to format or restore it every time?
The idea is to use "manually manage songs" on both Operating Systems.
    Thanks for your help!

iPods come formatted Windows and will work on Macs and Windows. Unless you Restore it in a Mac, it will stay formatted Windows.
If it doesn't work, put the iPod on Disk Mode and iTunes should recognize in both systems.
If it is formatted Mac, it will not be useable on Windows, even in Disk Mode.

  • Ipod Formatted to Windows but I want to use Mac!

I know you should be able to use an ipod formatted to windows on a Mac, but I can't. I have itunes 7 and it won't let me put music on my ipod says software is too old.
I've been trying to update the software but everything says you can't unless you have a mac formatted ipod! I'm so confused. I never had this prob with my old ipod. Help.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

This is looking like a common problem that has a (fairly) simple solution as long as you have access to another Mac. If not, you may have to do a "clean" install of the OS.
The problem is a corrupted file (at least on Macs with the Power PC processor, id est, not an Intel one) by the name of iPodDriver.kext which resides in the Extensions folder of the Library folder of System folder (not the System Folder, this is an important distinction) which you will see by double clicking on the icon of your hard disk on the desktop.
Drag this file to the trash and delete it (empty the trash).
The idea is that you find a Mac that is happy to mount your iPod and display the update and restore buttons correctly (as well as the full range of tabs and other visual clues, such as a non-generic icon of your iPod).
Then copy the aforementioned iPodDriver.kext to a USB stick, iPod, CD, DVD, whatever from the "good" Mac.
Reverse process to put it on your Mac.
    Shut down "your" Mac.
Restart "your" Mac and open iTunes, connect your iPod and, at least in my experience, it will work and provide you with correctly rendered iPod.
Apple used to recognise this problem, but seem to feel that the problem now no longer exists since the introduction of iTunes 7.1.1, however this appears to be arrant nonsense as it keeps cropping up as a problem on these forums (including in iPods and Macs running the most up to date software).
I feel it is also associated with the USB connection itself (for a longer explanation of why I believe this to be so http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=915410&tstart=0 ).
I hope that some of the above helps.

  • Importing itunes to new mac from itunes on windows or windows format ipod

I just recently purchased a new mac mini and an airport wireless network. I have shared my itunes library with the mac seemlessly from a windows laptop. It is my understanding that I should be able to download my store purchases to the mac, however haven't been able to find that option. My entire library is available on the mac but it requires having to have my windows machine fired up with itunes running in order to access my library. I also have a windows formatted ipod that when plugged into the mac will not let me copy anything into the mac library. I would like to have at least my purchased content accessible on the new mac without having to have my laptop running. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for your prompt reply. For your information there is a broken link on that page "Transfer from your Ipod"

  • Changing ipod over from Windows to Mac

I've been using my ipod with my PC for the last 2 years and I now want to change it over to my powerbook. I have all the music on an external drive and will only be selecting some of the music to go on the ipod as the collection is larger than the pod. I can't find option to only upload ticked songs to the ipod though.
Also I was wondering is anyone could tell me the best way to format the ipod over to mac. shall I just plug it in an the computer will do the rest or do I need to have my ipod serial code or is there anything else I should know?
Any help would be greaetly appreciated.
    Many Thanks
    Martin

If you connect your iPod to iTunes, right click on it, select options, and from there you should be able to select "only update checked songs".
You don't necessarily need to reformat your iPod since a Windows formatted iPod will work just fine on a Mac. (not the other way round though as a Mac formatted iPod cannot work on Windows)
If you want to reformat it, use the iPod updater which can be found in your utilities folder, run the program, connect the iPod and choose restore. This will reformat the iPod for Mac.
If you don't have the latest updater on your computer, you can download it here.

    To restore from backup see:

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

  • 5G iPod, Charges only when connectec to Mac

My subject pretty much describes it all. After months of working perfectly, all of a sudden I noticed my iPod wasn't charging with my car adapter.
I bought a new adapter, and still no luck. Won't even just power the iPod, it'll go from the charging screen, load, show my library, and then alert me that there's not enough power remaining. What's more, my sister's iPod charges just fine with either of my adapters. Her adapter, however, doesn't work with my iPod.
Fine, so it's definately something with my iPod--but why does it charge when it's connected to the computer? That's what's weird. I even took the USB connector out to my newly-purchased FM Modulator with a USB input for charging and listening-- just like the dock connector, it doesn't do a thing.
Anyone have any insight before I just try reformatting the stupid thing?

    Hello MacRez,
I hope that you have a backup for your iPod, iPod not being recongnized is a common error, I am not an expert but I believe that it happens more often with connecting with a PC rather than a Mac. If you are not going to connect with a PC in the future, it is better for you to restore the iPod updater in Mac version. At this stage I understand that your Ipod cnat be recongnized, however, you can try to put it in Disk Mode, and connect with your Mac, and hope that you wil be able to see your ipod's icon on your desktop. Then do a format (erase) with Disk Utility followed by a restore of the latest iPod updater.

  • Format a Mac iPod for Windows

    Hi,
I have a 5th gen video iPod that I formatted for Mac, but now I want to format it for Windows instead. I have followed the articles on the site on how to restore, how to format for windows, and looked at the posts here as well, but NONE of those WORK. My Windows machine will not see the iPod from iTunes or anywhere in Windows. How do I just wipe the iPod clean and start over on Windows? I cannot get Windows to see the iPod with iTunes. I cannot get Windows to see the iPod to even erase the drive. Where do I go besides the standard articles on the Apple site that say to restore it (because they all assume that iTunes can see the iPod to restore it).
    Thanks,
    Brian
