Mac is corrupting SD card

I have a MacBook Pro running 10.7.2 and iPhoto '11.  When I try to import photos from my Canon PowerShot using the card reader, everything appears to be fine--until the import is over.  However, once the card has been ejected, it appears to be empty.  I am NOT checking the box to delete photos upon import.  An application like CardRescue does see all the photos, but the camera itself, Image Capture, iPhoto and other computers do not.  Hide Photos Already Imported is NOT checked.  This is really disturbing, as I would like to maintain a backup of the photos on the card and allow my husband to also import the photos.  It seems to happen no matter whether I use iPhoto to import the photos or use Image Capture to import to the Pictures folder.
Someone in the iPhoto forum suggested resetting the iPhoto library and formatting the card.  I did not want to format and hence erase the memory card.  It also seemed like if iPhoto was really the problem then importing with ImageCapture would work. However, I just tried connecting the camera via the USB cable instead of putting the card in the card reader, and the problem does not happen in that situation.  (It only shows the photos taken since the last time the card was in the card reader, however...so the other photos are only available via CardRescue.)
It looks like the problem is not with iPhoto, but with the card reader itself.  Why does this happen and is there a way to fix it?  I'm worried that if it happens with photos it will happen with any other data, and thus my card reader is useless.

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
     User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
     User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - format the memory card in the camera, take a couple of test photos.
4 - launch iPhoto, connect the camera and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Or you can use a card reader to upload the photos to a folder on the Desktop and import the folder into iPhoto. This assures that the photos get on the hard drive safely.

how do i load pictures from my mac to a sd card? I loaded my dad's old slides to my computer , edited them, now I want to load on a SD card for a digital picture frame.  Lost.

FAT is not an image format. It's a volume format. It sounds like your images are in iPhoto. Export them as JPEG to the Desktop, then drag them to the card in the Finder. If that doesn't work, the card is either locked or corrupt. Look for a lock switch on the side.

  • Why did Mac delete camera memory card?

We used a card reader that had been used on a PC, and a camera memory card that had been used on a PC. A pro master GB compact flash. The photos were put on iPhoto. When the card was put into a reader on a PC after that, it refused to let us see the photos. Now back on the Mac, it says the card is not recognizable.
Why does Mac refuse to allow you to use things on a PC? How do we get the photos back and in the future how do we avoid this?

    Hi Terence
I just thought I would let you know that I followed your link and the second video where the guy cuts a piece of card and inserts it into the slot worked for me at only the second attempt. This retrieved the HD Card after it was completely lodged in the CD Drive and invisible.
Thank you so much for the link....you have probably saved me about £100 and a long trip to an Apple Store.
Thanks and have a nice day.

  • Can't open certain mp3's or thumbnails on 9300, corrupt media card??

I am also having issues with the phone! Since I updated my software 2 weeks ago my app world stopped working and now I cannot download it after deleting it. About a month ago when downloading mp3's it all of a sudden started having format issues even though the music is in the supported format. My photos that were taken with the camera turned to thumbnails that cannot be opened and that is why I decided to update the software in the first place. Since the new software update I now also have a java.lang.error when ever I reboot the phone. I'm frustrated! Anybody with tips as to how I can get these problems sorted please help! I have deleted all third party apps and the error persists. Is any of this indicative of a corrupt media card??

  • How do I download pictures from my Mac to a sd card?

How do I dowload pictures from my Mac to an SD Card

Where are the pictures - in iPhoto? If so, put the SD card in the drive and then in iPhoto select the pictures you want on the SD card and choose File>Export. Navigate to the SD card and save them there.
If the pictures are just in a folder on your Mac, put the SD card in the drive and drag the folder with the pics on the Mac onto the SD icon on your desktop.
(If SD card doesn't appear on your Desktop check Finder>Preferences, General & Sidebar tabs to make sure the option to show it is ticked).

  • Sudden Death due to corrupt SD card/ virus?

Bought an Xperia Z3 Compact less than a month back and was extremely happy using it. However, within the first 3 weeks, it suddenly died on me while browsing. Took it to the local Sony service center who said they'll check for hardware faults, if any. 2 days later, they returned it back to me with nothing more than OS software update.  Within the next 24 hours, the phone died once again and this time I tried every trick I read online. Volume up+Power button. Long pressing the yellow hard reset button. Nothing worked. Feeling frustrated, I confronted the service centre reps telling them its not a software related issue. As it was bound to happen, the phone restarted normally at the store. Now it didn't look like there was any problem with the phone.  The explanation provided by the service centre was that there's no issue with the phone. Instead, I might be having a corrupted SD card that may possibly be infected with a virus. Went back home and checked with AVG anti-virus (paid version) and didn't find any signs of infection. The only remaining possibility is that my office laptop might have some virus since I often use it to charge my cellphone.  My questions to experts - Is this possible? Does an SD card or virus have anything to do with the sudden death problem? How do I fix it because even the service centre refuses to acknowledge any problem? What's the point of such a good phone if I can't rely on it to work all the time?

  • My power mac g4 with wireless card 801.11b cannot log into new AirPort Extreme 801.11ac network

everything worked until I upgraded to airport extreme. I used all same settings as with previous extreme al other items logged in to new network, but would not accept power mac. Apple wireless card 801.11b may not be able to communicate with AC standard. Can anyone suggest an upgrade card or means of getting the power mac on the wireless network to communicate with various wireless printers

    Hello!
I have noticed that some manufacturers (Linksys and possibly D-LINK) only accept upper-case WEP keys only.
This drove me nuts when trying to integrate a Linksys PC PCMCIA card into my old "g" network.
As far as using WEP, it's bad and broken; but I understand that your choice of security is limited to the devices that you are trying to network.
For what it's worth, I have my network set up with the AEBS 'n' connected to my Cable Modem, with one of the ports going to a gigabit switch for my wired network. I then have two AirTunes set up as WDS extensions for music & Internet delivery to two separate areas. The AEBS 'n" serves up DHCP and routing for the entire network.
It works quite well; I get 54 mbits/sec for the two WDS AirTunes, and 145 mbits/sec to one of my ATV's. My gigabit wired machines see data rates of 15-27 MBytes/sec (depending on the type of transfer).
    Good luck!

  • IPad camera connection kit corrupts SD card.

I received the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit as a gift for Christmas. Placing an SD card in the device and inserting it into the iPad, I am shortly presented the option of copying the images to the iPad. Worked fine EXCEPT that I told it to NOT erase the original images. This was apparently understood by the application. After it completed, I exited the applcation, wait a few seconds and then remove the adapter. I then put the SD card back into my camera and it now says the 'card is not formatted ... format yes or no'.  I deliberately selected to NOT delete the iamges as I wanted to save the EXIF information. Telling the camera to NOT accept the card, it promptly powers off. If I tell it to format the card, it is now totally blank.
My doctor has to adhere to an oath that says essentially, 'Do No Harm'.  Apple, if you are reading this, please correst the software that copies the images from an SD card so it does NOT corrupt the card! While this is not a life threatening issue, it does irritate me in that I have lost a lot of information that was valuable to me.
I am using an iPad 2 with the latest iteration of IOS (6.0.1) and the camera is an older model Toshiba model PDR-4300.
I strongly request that Apple update the appropriate software to fix this issue. On the off chance that there is a setting somewhere that I missed, I'm posting this as a question.

This is an iPad user to user forum. Apple doesn't read or respond.
I've used the camera connection kit many times and never hd this problem. Nor have I ever seen this problem posted here before. It must have been something you did and not the iPad or its software.
    Send feedback to Apple.

  • Can I use an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro Mac Edition 128MB Video Card in a Mac Min

Looking to buy a Mac mini.
In 2004 I upgraded the graphics card in my dual processor 450 MHz G4 desktop with an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro Mac Edition 128MB Video Card to run a 20-inch Cinema Display.
Now my G4 has died (probably the power supply and I'm being told it's not worth it to fix---buy a Mac mini!)
But I've read that the graphics card in the Mac mini is not stellar and I'm wondering if I could reuse the ATI Radeon 9000 Pro Mac Edition 128MB Video Card in the Mac mini. Would this be a good thing to do?
Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,

There are people that claim to have hooked up a PCI-e 1x card (yes, the Mini uses PCI-e). But that requires some serious hardware modifications including soldering, a PC power supply, and so on. But that card is an old AGP card so even that wouldn't even work for what you've got.

  • Mac PRo with raid card shipped with drive not suitable for raid?

    Hi all,
I ordered a Mac Pro with raid card and a 1TB hard drive. The drive which came in the computer was WDC WD1001FALS which is not a hard drive rated for raid usage. On Western Digital's site they suggest using WD1002FBYS.
Is the model WD1001FALS the correct drive which Apple ships although one ordered the raid card?

The WD 640GB Blue, and WD 1TB Black are the only drive options for the mac pro; that's what you choose.
The RE3 (or FBYS) is not an option sold through apple. Buying the raid card, is not going to change the drive.
On whether to use the RE3 over the Blacks, it depends on how you will be using it. From what I've heard, the Blacks are enterprise drives themselves; basically with just a less robust firmware (no TLER). If you will have the drives on 24/7 in a raid 5, then yes, RE3 will probably be better. If not, I think the black will suffice; note the blacks are GREAT drives by themselves anyway.
The apple raid card can connect to both SATA and SAS drives internally, however most times people buying the raid card want to use it for SAS drives. There are a lot more cheaper and possibly a lot more stable options then apple's raid card if you are looking to use SATA drives.
    Check amug:
    http://www.amug.org/
A common problem with the apple raid card is the battery:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA849Z/B?mco=NDc1ODczNw
Lastly about enterprise drives, truthfully I don't see the difference really. I have enterprise drives in a 8-drive raid5 config running 24/7 as a server. 2 drives died on me after about 4 months. To top it off, they died within 10 min of each other, crushing the raid to pieces. Granted they were Seagate ES.2's, it's understandable
The boot drive of the server is a stock desktop WD drive and running 24/7. It's been running for almost 4 years straight.

  • Mac Pro with 8800 Card Availability

On Jan 21 ETA for Mac Pro with 8800 card was 2-3 weeks. Now, on Feb 2, ( 12 days later ) ETA is still 2-3 weeks.
    Anybody heard anything more definitive?

Why not just go out and buy the "stock" Mac Pro with the default ATI 2600XT card right now, and then just order the Nvidia 8800GT separately. Then when your 8800GT card finally arrives, sell the ATI card for $100 or so on eBay. All you will end up paying is about $70.00 more than the BTO option ($375 (including tax) for the 8800GT as a standalone option, minus $100 for selling the ATI 2600XT=$275 out of pocket cost vs. the $200 BTO option).
That way you can have your Mac Pro right away (as I have for the last 3 weeks), and still get my 8800GT at or around the same time as yours for only a $75.00 difference.
Having my new Mac Pro NOW is worth far more than saving $75.00. Time is $$$$$
My standalone Nvidia 8800GT is scheduled to arrive Feb 28th (according to Apple). I already have a buyer with the 1st. generation Mac Pro that will buy my ATI 2600XT when the 8800GT arrives.
Also, you might even have further delays with the BTO option if Nvidia has supply problems that could drag on into early to mid march if you hang with your current order.

  • MacBook Pro is corrupting media cards - any suggestions on how to fix this?

Memory cards become corrupted when inserted into the card reader slot. When I put the card back in the camera, the camera malfunctions (Error 99 message). I have had the camera cleaned and sent in for repairs, but there in nothing wrong with it. New media cards work until they are inserted into the Mac. Now the Mac is telling me some file formats can't be read, but the format has not changed from previous images it reads off the same card, taken during the same sessions. Images I was able to see on the camera become unreadable after trying to download in the Mac. The Mac is messing up the cards -- corrupting them, so they aren't usable in the camera anymore. I have been told to try using a media card reader, but that is just a band-aid fix. Does anyone know of a real fix that could remedy this problem?

Make sure that you haven't disable background images.

  • JVC GY-HM100u clip corrupted on card. How to recover?

Hello all. Long time reader, first time poster. I think I have some corrupt footage, and I need help recovering it. Anyone have experience with this...?
I've been shooting on a JVC HM-100 for a month or two now; about 20 hours of footage in the can. All shot 1080x1920, 30p in .MOV format (not .MP4). Until now, on a Mac Pro with FCP installed, all of the .MOV files could easily be viewed in Quicktime Player, and could be dragged into FCP and were editable right away without rendering, etc. My workflow has been to 1) shoot on the SD card, 2) dump the entire contents of the SD card to a hard drive, DCIM and PRIVATE folders/file structure and all. Once the dump is complete, 3) I review the footage using QT player, and edit in FCP. I also use Compressor to create lo-fi .mp4 clips of all of my shots for sharing with others, laptop logging, etc.
Today was the first time I've encountered this: I shot about 30 minutes of footage, among five different clips. One of the clips isn't playable after transfer from the SD card. My first clue that something was wrong was when the MacOS/Finder created image thumbnails for four of the clips, but left the fifth one with the little default QT icon. The file still transferred with the filename, .mov extension, and the full file size (1.82 GB), but Quicktime won't play it. The QT error message says that the file "could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands." I've tried to create a lo-fi version in Compressor, and compressor will not even accept the clip in the batch window, even though it will accept the other adjacent clips from the same card. I also attempted to drag the file into FCP, and receive the error message "File Error: Unknown file".
Here's what's strange: The entire clip plays back on the camera. It is a "part two" clip, meaning that the clip is the second half of another earlier clip that had reached it's maximum file size (a weakness of the whole solid-state SDHC recording media technology that I really hate, but that's another post). But I also had another two-part clip on the same card, and both of those transferred just fine. It's just this one that isn't readable by the computer, even though it still plays in the camera.
I used the copy feature in the camera to copy the contents of card A to card b, and then imported card b hoping that would help - same result.
Here's one other fact that may be relevant: at the conclusion of shooting this particular clip, I turned off the camera, changed batteries, and fired up again. I may or may not have "closed" the file before I turned off the camera. (the HM100 will let you stop/start recording multiple times and compile all of those shots into one clip/scene. The scene isn't "closed" until you push *and hold* the record button to stop recording.) I just did a test shot where I recorded, stopped, intentionally didn't close the file, and powered down and removed the battery. That clip still imported and played fine; apparently the JVC "closes" any open file before powering down.
So there's my saga. I guess I have two questions. 1) how can I recover this footage? and 2) What's your best theory on why this happened?
I hate to think that this camera might just drop entire sections of my footage at random. That's a HUGE deal. Imagine an event photographer whose HM100u decides to drop the wedding vows...
    Thanks in advance!!
    -Scott,
    Houston, TX

David, thanks for your reply. I came back here to post an update, and I think you're right. I did some more sleuthing, and I think I'm a victim of the 4GB file size limitation that I'm just now learning about. Seems that the HM100u didn't correctly split a long continuous shots into multiple files.
For the benefit of others who stumble here with the same issue, here are the details.
Recall that the clip in question is part two of a very long shot. Put simply, it's kinda like one long shot that the camera broke up into parts and stored as multiple clips for more manageable file sizes. When I review today's footage in the camera, i only have three "scenes" to choose from. The first two scenes, being very long continuous shots, are broken up into subparts. So I have a total of five .mov files that can be described as 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, and 3. It's file 1b that is misbehaving - the second half of my first long shot.
I reviewed .mov file 1a on my computer in Quicktime. The file size was 3.71 GB, it's 13 minutes and 54 seconds long, and ends on a camera zoom. I reviewed scene 1 again in the camera, and it plays the whole thing just fine - scene 1 lasts an additional 7 or 8 minutes beyond that camera zoom. That 7 or 8 minutes is the second half of scene one, so it's the second .mov file that the camera created after the first half of shot/scene 1 reached it's maximum file size. That's the .mov file that I describe in my original post as "corrupt". It's the one that won't play.
So it looks like I have a situation where the camera split a shot into two clips, and failed to package up the second half in such a way that QT/FCP/Compressor/etc. knows what to do with it. It's still there, I can watch it in the camera, I just can't use it anywhere else.
    Anyone have any additional suggestions?
    Thanks,
    -Scott
