Mac is really slow to read external drive

hello, i have a late 2012 mac book pro and a seagate 1tb paasport external drive.when i connect my drive to my computer sometimes it takes very long to read the drive right now its going on 5+ minutes and i still cant access my info.i have tested the harddrive on other computers and it boots up instantly or almost instantly.i have also noticced the slowness from time to time when i connect any type of flashdrive or cd wich again seem to work fine on any other device but tend to sometimes not boot up on my computer.is there any fix or possible way to speed up this process ? any recommendations? your help and or suggestions would be highly apprecciated since i do rely on this equipment for work.

Hey chezron,
If you are having slow down issues frequently, then check out the articles below to start with isolating what could be causing the issue. Sometime it could be an application or a process that is constantly running and causing slow down. Another thing could be the memory usage as well, for example if you are multitasking, then the memory may be full.

Can I use Time Machine on two different Macs to back up to one external drive?
I have one 1T Western Digital backup drive that works well with Time Machine and my MacBook Pro.  I now want to back up my wife's MacBook Air using Time Machine on her Mac and want to know if I can use the same WD external drive or if I need to get a 2nd back up drive?  If I can use one external drive for the two Macs do I need to do something special on the drive or will Time Machine do it automatically?

Yes. You will need to configure Time Machine preferences on each computer to backup to the same drive. Note that you cannot connect the backup drive to both machines at the same time.

I cant even do my typing normally...
but this time i let a friend of mine to fix it, and he removed the ox system i had, repalced with XP
    the XP runs great
    but i didn't do much things in XP,cos  i don't like it
so i turn my mac into OS system again
    then my mac runs normal
but the whole things turned into a tragedy angain after i pressed "shift"
mac become really slow ,and makes out big noise!!!  I couldn't bear it , it's now the worst machine i have
is anyone figure out the real problem with my mac?
does it still a hardware mistake with my "shift key"  ?  i would be really appreciate if u can solve my problem!!

You should update to the latest version of Snow Leopard (it is now at version 10.6.8) and see if this helps. This will also install a number of security updates to help protect you from potential viruses.
The few other things I can suggest to try are:
    1) checking the hard disk by running "Verify Disk" in the Disk Utility program (see the Apple KB article at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782 for instructions)
    2) check and repair file access privileges (see Apple kb article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452)
    3) make sure the Startup Disk System Preference shows the Macbook Air's hard disk is selected.
Sorry I have no experience with Chinese input on the mac, however I did find this website http://www.yale.edu/chinesemac that may further help. Good luck!

  • Can I run Mac App Store programs from an external drive?

I have a 13" MacBook Air (128); but I have tons of programs that I have purchased from the Mac App Store, especially large training video programs. Even though I don't have a shortage of drive space yet, I certainly could find myself in that position if I keep ALL my programs and data on the flash drive. I really don't need to keep all these on my main drive; but I would like to be able to run one when I need it. Is there any problem with moving the program from APPLICATIONS to an external drive and running it from there? Should I leave the support files & folders (preference & application support) on the flash drive?
    THANKS.

Thanks for your help on this.
The MacBook Air is a joy; but the limited drive space is the only caveat. I really should have spent the extra money on the 256 gb flash drive; but at the time I was in the mood to go minimalist. Unfortunately that doesn't work well for me.
I have already moved all my music to iTunes Match and moved the backups to the external drive. I also keep most of my archive data on the 3 tb external drive. It's mostly those training video programs which are about a gig each that I want to move to the external drive ... ones I would not use that often ... so it's nice to know I can do that.
    THANKS AGAIN.

  • Mac Mini conflict with Western Digital External Drive

My Mac Mini used to work fine with my 2 TB Western Digital external drive, but now when I plug it in my desktop goes blank and the drive won't mount. I have tried it both USB and Firewire. The drive DOES work with my Powerbook G4.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi-
    Please clarify.
What mini are you using? One of the new 2009 models?
As for the drive, is this a Firewire 800 drive or a Firewire 400 connection?
If it is a firewire connection, are you daisy chained to another firewire device? If so, in what order is the hard disk?
If it is a firewire 400 connection, what adaptor/cable are you using?
For a USB 2.0 connection, are you connected to a hub, or directly to the mini? Is the hub powered or not? Have you tried a different USB port? Same results?
Did you plug in both the USB and Firewire cables at the same time?
What is the model of your WD ext drive?
When you say that your desktop goes "blank" what exactly do you mean? The computer is still on, but there is no image on the screen?
You mention that the drive works with your Powerbook G4. By Firewire? USB?

  • Mac mini with a fire wire external drive

I have 10 folders with pictures in my fire wire external drive, but mac mini cannot see the pictures in one of the folders. If you click the folder, it shows 0 items. However, if the folder is chosen as a screen saver folder, the pictures show as a slide show. Why is that?

Use the Disk Utility and repair that drive.

  • Why is my Mac is super slow with removable hard drive plugged in?

I have all our photos on our 1tb HD and every time I plug it in I get the spinning pinwheel for any task. Help!!

Could be the OS X is trying to keep an updated index of files and folders, of that hard drive. You may have to look into the settings to stop external drives from being indexed by 'spotlight' search. There may be other reasons why the lag occurs, in that the drive is relatively huge and it is a hard disk drive, not a flash or SSD where the information is stored, retrieved differently, and at much faster speeds than a HDD.
You could read up on how to stop the external drive from being indexed, or how to have it ignored by the computer's operating system. An example follows, but not necessarily an exact method: http://osxdaily.com/2011/12/30/exclude-drives-or-folders-from-spotlight-index-ma c-os-x/  Or maybe it just isn't indexing correctly and needs some other action, see this example: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23831185#23831185 where ivan says: "read in another discussion the solution, go to Spotlight preferences and into Privacy add your hardrive to the list where you don't want Spotlight search, then remove it, and Spotlight would begin the correct index and stated a time."
What is the spin rate of the external drive in question? Is that a 7500RPM drive? The buffer or cache size may not be as important for a non-boot hard drive when compared to the purposefulness that could perform for an OS X in pre-loading files for a specific purpose, such as to run an application or perform one task.
What kind of enclosure do you have the drive in? Sometimes the drive may be a little slower because of how it is accessed, and if the computer and enclosure both support a higher-speed connectivity, that's best.
The spinning wheel usually represents CPU activity, but that could also mean pending action while the files get found and transferred, since the internal HDD where the system lives also has to spin-up for the OS X to function, move temp files, & virtual memory space on the System's HDD is read and written too, all the while.
So you could look into Activity Monitor to see if some of that spinning wheel is due to the computer and what exactly, relative to files, activity, CPU, RAM, virtual memory, etc is going on. Or some of it, anyway.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Problem reading external drive after switching enclosures

My Time Machine backup was on a 2 TB WD My Essential external drive.  I run a 2008 iMac that doesn't support USB3 speeds so I removed the drive from the WD enclosure and put it in a Rocstor enclosure that uses Firewire 800.  After switching enclosures, my iMac wouldn't read the drive without formatting it.  Anyone know why that is?  Does it have something to do with the firmware on the HD itself?  It was no big deal as I was going to format and partition the drive anyway.  I would just like to know why going from USB to Firewire would cause it to do that.  BTW, after reformating the drive, it appears to be working just fine as it did before.

No it is not a problem with the firmware on the drive. It has to do with the Firewire system on the Mac or any computer. I have the same thing happen when I have a drive that was using USB and put that drive in a FW adapter. Once in the FW adapter OS X wants to format it, actually initialize it. Once reconnected by USB again the drive works fine. You do know that you have voided the WD warranty on that unit by taking the drive out.

  • How do I move my library from a mac to a PC using an external drive?

I have a Mac and have a large library of music (+120GB) which is stored on an external hard drive. I have a windows PC in my basement and I have purchased a 2nd external drive (200GB drive) and copied my music library (music files and iTunes Library.itl file) onto it. I want to attach the 2nd drive to the windows PC and use it to run my music library on that machine.
I recognize that I could use the the sharing feature in iTunes to share the music over a network w/o the 2nd drive but for a number of reasons assume that this will not work for the sake of this question.
What is the best way to add this drive/library to the PC? (the PC has iTunes installed, but no music in the library)
Can I just hold the shift key down while launching iTunes and then select the library on the external drive? Will this be a problem given that the iTunes Library.itl file was created in OS X (file location format differences, etc)?
If the above is a problem, should I just add the music folder (and all sub folders) to the library on the windows machine using File-> Add Folder to Library ...butI do not want to make a duplicate copy of the music given that the library is so large (it is larger than the HD on the PC machine)..so I would have to make sure that the "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" is unchecked, but then after the initial import I would want iTunes to keep any subsequent new additions to the library in the same place as the rest of the music and also keep the files/folders organized, etc. Can this be accomplished by changing the itunes music folder location? If I go the "add music folder" route, what are the steps and the right sequencing to add the music properly (w/o copying ) and then leaving iTunes set up to store/organize new music additions properly?
Way too many words I know...any help very much appreciated.

It sounds like you mostly have everything down on how to do it. The one thing I don't know about is how to transfer the database file from Mac to Windows (or the other way around). I have not tried it nor seen reports from anyone who has tried it, so I am not sure if it will work or not.
As to your last question, plug the external into the Windows machine, open iTunes. Change preferences to use the iTunes Music folder on the external drive. Now add your files. Since they are already in that location and in the order iTunes would put them in, they should be added and not moved or copied again. Since you changes the storage location preference to that location, future additions will go into the same folder on the external.
If you can, please let us know how the Mac to Windows database transfer worked out. Most people either are going from Mac to Mac or Windows to Windows or simply don't care about ratings, play counts, play lists, etc. so starting over with a new database file is no big deal. So I am curious about getting the database file to translate across systems. You might try the XML file first since that should be universal. The other one may be in a Mac specific format.

  • My late 2012 mac mini boots slow with new ssd drive

So here is the situation.  I purchased a 128gb ssd drive, installed it a usb enclosure, formatted it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), cloned it with carbon copy cloner 3,   used the option key during boot up and selected the ssd drive and it booted my mac mini and it functioned perfectly.  I than tested it for dozens of reboots and it worked fine.  I then took apart my mac mini and removed the original hard drive and installed the new ssd drive.  When I boot to the ssd drive it still takes 47 to 53 seconds just like the old drive.  Aren't ssd drives supposed to be a lot faster?
My solution or tip is as follows; The reason it takes so long to boot is because the mac mini doesn't know you replaced the old drive and it is looking for it during the boot process.  Finally it can't find the drive so it boots to the ssd drive.  All you have to do to correct this is click on "system preferences", select and click on "startup disk" and select your ssd drive and click on "restart".  After these steps your mac mini will now boot in about 17 seconds.  Issues solved.

Yes, my solution fixed the issue.  I went from a 47 to 53 second boot time to a 17 second boot time.  The ssd drive is significantly faster than the original drive that came with my late 2012 mac-mini.   This is my first post and I wasn't sure how to post this as a tip.  I have another tip regarding usb 3.0 hubs.

  • Mac Mini Will not boot from external drive or install disk

    Hi,
I just bought a new 2.0 ghz mac mini 1 gb ram. 120gb hdd.
I have a separate external HDD attached and wanted to boot from this. It works with my MBP and IMAC.
When i plug it into the Mac Mini and start up with Option key. It recognizes it.
I then click on it. It automatically reboots.... then grey screen comes on. It goes black after about 10 seconds. then boots into original operating system.
I also tried to use the MAC install Disk, thinking it might be a corruption in the shipped software. It does the same thing.
I have MAC Install DVD on an external drive too. Same issue.
I partitioned the HDD and installed a copy of the Mac install disk onto that with disk utility... Same thing grey screen, then black then back to original operating system.
Not sure what is going on?
    thanks
    Chris

    Hi,
    Thanks.
    It is running 10.5.8.
I am trying to boot up an external drive with 10.5.8 on it. It works on my Macbook Pro which is running 10.5.8, runs on my IMAC running SL. But doesnt work on the mac mini?
It had been running SL, however there are a number of programs I have like Windows Live Sync which are not yet compatable with SL so i downgraded to 10.5.6 which came with the Mac Mini then loaded all updates.
It seems to just go into an auto reboot as soon as i click on it.
i thought it might be the firmware? Is it possible to downgrade them and then re-install?
    I have reset the PRAM.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
