Mac is rerouting iTunes files to trash

My iTunes library seems to be self-destructing.  I first noticed that some of the music would not play, and got an error message that the file no longer exists.  The message asks if I would like my computer to locate it.  I could not find the music anywhere.
After reading a few other forums here, I looked up the info for the songs that were not playing.  The info shows that the file has been routed to the trash.
As I work to try to restore my music, I notice more and more of the songs are being marked this way.  Everytime I open my library, more songs are gone.
I have already tried to find them in the trash, but since my library has over 3,500 songs, it would be incredibly tedious to manually move the songs back to my itunes.
When I tried to use time machine to restore my entire library, the time machine itunes looked exactly like the one I have now, instead of they way it was during the date of the backup.
My music consists of songs and albums purchased through iTunes, CD's,and mp3 files digitized from vinyl.  The problem seems to be attacking songs indiscriminately no matter the source.  When I called iTunes for support, they assured me that I could simply download the purchased items from my accounts.  Well, that covers about 50 of the 3,500 songs.
All of my files were legally purchased and I cannot understand why iTunes seems to be renaming the file paths to the trash for me.
Can anyone help?

Also - I see the forum is automatically labeling my computer as a MacBook, 13 inch from early 2008.  That sounds like the computer I bought for my son.  This computer, the one I am talking about is an IMac, Intel core, running Mac OSX 10.6.8.

  • Help to restore iTunes files from trash, not deleted.

I need to move 35,000 podcasts, 654 GB, from my trash back to my iTunes library on an external hard drive (EHD). They are NOT deleted from my trash.
I am running on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 until I can clear enough EHD space to backup/upgrade to Mtn Lion.
11.5 iTunes is my current version on my 640 GB early 2009 24” mac.
    I have tried:
    Undo - command + Z
Selecting all in trash and dragging it to the:
iTunes Music folder on my EHD
Automatically Add to iTunes folder on my EHD
The upper left corner on the iTunes window
The iTunes icon in the dock
There is no restore option when I Right Click on anything in trash, single or more than one file.
In iTunes: File, Add to Library, selecting the recycle bin or the file under it. Nothing happens. I do have checked on iTunes Preferences, Advanced, Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.
Dragging 40 files from trash to the Automatically Add to iTunes folder on my EHD.
This returned the files but without essential data like the release date/description, which totally messes up my library.
They are no longer listed in date order, and I cannot see if I have the most recent without scrolling down down through sometimes over 200 pods in that album, and even then there is no date order, which orders all podcasts. All the tags/descriptions/comments I spent thousands of hours on are gone.
I just recieved in the mail yesterday my Data Rescue 3 software for an earlier problem,
I do not know if it will help retrieve all the essential data.
I cannot move the files to my desktop because the size, 654 GB, is bigger than my 640 GB mac. Plus, I know from experience this does not preserve the essential data like release date.
My iTunes EHD has 485 GB free out of 1.71 TB.
I can order another 3 TB EHD to arrive in 2 weeks, which I will eventually need, but my husband aint going to be happy. As an old photographer trying to join the digital age, I already have 20 TB storage, mostly for photos, which has put us in debt.
Please, does anyone know how to restore podcasts from trash while retaining metadata?

    Thanks for your sympathy, dclkdm.
    For anybody else out there,
I have had some luck retaining info such as release date, plays, and rating by
dragging podcasts to a Finder folder in iTunes,
    in iTunes Media,
    Automatically Add to iTunes.
So far, I have retrieved all my lost podcasts with Data Rescue 3,
but have not tried to consolidate everything into one library yet.

  • Searched for a clear answer on Mac to Windows Itunes file transfer

Trying to send my Mac iTunes music to my Windows laptop over a network. Windows sees the songs and can play them in iTunes, but is there an easy (or not so easy) way to just drag and drop the songs to the Windows computer?
    Thanks for any help!

I use Windows and prefer to stay away from MACs these days. So quick question, are you able to move the music from your iPod to your MAC, then from the MAC to flashdrive to Windows PC?

  • Moving iTunes files from PC to Mac

I have most of my iTunes files on my iMac and want to copy them into iTunes on my PC. I thought about moving them from the iMac onto a thumb drive and them importing them into iTunes on the PC, but don't know if the thumb drive can be used on both Mac and PC. If not, any other suggestions to move 4 GB of files the easiest way possible?

Format your thumb drive as fat32 and it will be read by both PC and Mac. If you have less than 4GB of music then you should be fine

  • How can I move mp3 files from trash to iTunes?

I accidently moved a group of MP3 files (songs) from my iTunes to the trash.  After doing a little research, I saw the suggestion of creating a folder on my desktop and dragging them from the trash to the new desktop folder.  So, I did that, and as far as I can tell, the songs are all there, sitting in the folder.  But when I tried to drag the songs from the desktop folder to iTunes, I got this message:
"Attempting to copy the disk Macintosh HD failed.  You do not have enough access privaleges for this operation."
This makes no sense to me.  This is my private computer so I should have all the privaleges I need to do anything, right? And I'm not trying to copy the "disk Macintosh HD", right?
Anyway, can you help me move the songs back into iTunes--or to the podcast so I can then move them to iTunes?  FYI, the songs have names like, "download 124.mp3" and the Kind is "mp3 Audio."  I originally got these songs via a podcast from a radio station (KCRW). I have iTunes 11.1.1.
    Thanks!

    ed2345,
Thanks!  I did that and the songs are now back in my iTunes.  Some of the songs went back to the podcast and some went to the playlist.
UNFORTUNATELY, the songs did some sort of massive duplicating so that there are now over 100 duplicates of every episode/song (the podcast now has almost 36,000 episodes/songs and the playlist now has over 24,000 episodes/songs), and iTunes is viery slow/sluggish (spinning beach ball).  Can you tell me how to eleminate all of the duplicates?

    A Espinoza,
The iTunes Media folder is set in Preferences > Advanced, and is the key to most iTunes folder organizational activities.  So I doubt that the automatic deletion will work for files that are somewhere else within the folder structure.
However, I have not experimented with that issue in quite a while, so you are welcome to give it a try in iTunes 11.

  • Is there an easier way to transfer your iTunes library on windows to a mac than copying the library to a usb and plugging the usb into the mac and put the library in the iTunes file

is there an easier way to transfer your iTunes library on windows to a mac than copying the library to a usb and plugging the usb into the mac and put the library in the iTunes file? I recently swapped to Mac and this is how i moved the library from windows to mac and library is in tact but is there an easier way? My cousin just imported her cd's again, but it was harder for me as i have an ipod with over 150 apps and i needed to move them. i think it would be helpful if i knew of an easier way so i can help a friend move his. Thanks

The general method of use is to download a script (double-click or right-click and use Download or Save As...) to a folder of your choice, e.g. your Desktop, Downloads folder or create a folder at ...\iTunes\Scripts. Select a playlist or highlight some tracks in iTunes and then double-click on the script to execute it. If no specific tracks are selected the script will try to work with all tracks in the current playlist or sometimes the entire library.

  • Could someone suggest a procedure describing how I should migrate my iTunes files from old an older Motorola-based PowerMac to a new Intel-based Mac Pro?

My problem concerns migrating, or moving my iTunes files from a Motorola-based G4 PowerMac OS X 10.4.11 iTunes 9.2.1 (4) to a new Intel-based Mac Pro running OS X 10.8.4 iTunes 11.0.4.
    Context Summary:
    1.  Migration assistants on my old and new macs are not compatible.
    2.  My older mac has my iTunes library stored on an external firewire disk.
    3.  Part (but not all) of my iTunes files are also resident/stored on my iPod classic.
    4.  Finally, I need OS X 10.4.11 on my old mac and cannot upgrade it to OS X10.5.
Proposed method A: Is there a way to transfer my playlists from my Motorola Mac to my Intel Mac?  If so, could I then connect my external firewire disk (containing my iTunes library) to my new mac, and then tell iTunes (on new mac) to use my iTunes library located on my external firewire disk?
Proposed method B: Would my chances for success improve if I used my iPod classic to transfer iTunes files from old Mac to new?
Worst Case Proposal C:  I could start from scratch and recreate iTunes playlists and library on new mac.... time consuming proposal but it's possible.  (Please don't suggest this proposal unless no other viable choices exist for me.)
Or have I missed something?  Is there another procedure I should use?
    Please advise, and thank you.

    Hello Chris,
Answer to your iTunes library question:  By iTunes Library, I mean my iTunes Media folder only; not the entire /iTunes/folder with iTunes media folder inside.
BTW: Your pointer to ht4889 was very helpful, and sharing the folder, then copying it over firewire interface from old to new mac was most useful.
However, now with my entire iTunes folder (including iTunes media folder) moved to new mac, I remain unclear as to how I should configure iTunes on the new mac so that it can know about and use these copied files.  I understand using iTunes preferences, how to point iTunes to my media folder, but don't know what other iTunes operations are necessary for iTunes to pick up where I left off with my old mac.
Is there any file conversion necessary?
    Or inside iTunes, should I:
    File->Library->Organize Library?  or
    File->Library->Export Library?  or
    File->Library->Import Playlist?
Please advise and thank you again for your help.
As you might imagine, I put a great deal of time building my iTunes library, and would feel very blue if I need to build it again from scratch on my new mac.
    So long for now.

  • Transfer ITunes File From Mac to PC

How do I copy a large ITunes file that was created on a Mac and transfer it to my HP PC?
Could I copy the file from my Mac onto a Seagate Go-Flex external Hard Drive and transfer it to my PC without any reformatting?
The instructions re: FAT32 are confusing and state that there may be irreparable damage to my Mac if left on too long?    Please decipher this for me as I do not want to place my Mac in a problem situation.
    Please advise.
    Tks.

Both the Mac and the PC will read and write to a FAT32 disk, so it should be fine. I can't see how an external drive formatted FAT32 will caude a problem for the Mac - I've used many such drives over the years and never had a problem. Connect the drive to the Mac, copy the file to the drive, eject from the Mac (don't forget that part), connect to the PC and copy it on.
But - FAT32 will not handle files larger than about 4GB (a bit less, actually), so if the file is bigger than that, you'll have to find another solution - connect via a network for example

  • How do i uninstall "Easy Duplicate Finder"??  its in the trash but won't go away... i never ran the .dmg file, but trash says its in use!

Hi .. i was trying to free up some space on my early 2009 mac mini, and i downloaded the Easy Duplicate Finder 3rd party thingy... i never ran the setup.dmg file and i tried to throw it away, but i can't empty it out of my trash because it says its in use (which worries me!)
i do have ext. backup using Time Machine... is that my solution? i just set that up about a week ago, but I'm such a computer dummie... I've never used it before....
    i hope someone can help!
    thanks in advance!

Other than an occasional restart, OS X tune-ups are not necessary or required like in Windoz.
It is best just to enjoy your Mac and don't try to fix something that isn't broken.
If you seriously need to free up some Hard Disk Space...(you never said how full it is)...? Your best bet it to move something like an iTunes, iPhoto or iMovie Library to an External Hard Drive. Problem is, that requires at least two or more External Hard Drives, so that your Library(s) are also backed up.

  • How to Undo Moving Lockdown file to Trash

I followed the directions below to address my syncing problem and by mistake, moved the file to trash. Now none of my iphones can sync with my G5 and the error code is xE8000003. I can recover the files in the trash (there is a folder that says Recovered Files #17) but don't know where to put the lockdown folder and files (e.g, System folder?). I'm not even sure if this was my problem in the first place, but now I've created a new problem. Help is greatly appreciated!
I FOLLOWED THESE DIRECTIONS FROM THE APPLE SUPPORT SITE (BUT MUST HAVE REMOVED THE FOLDER AND FILES TO TRASH)
    About unknown error 0xE800000a:
When connecting your iOS device, iTunes might display an "unknown error 0xE800000a" when the contents of your lockdown directory are unusable. Do the following depending on your operating system:
    Windows XP:
    1. Disconnect all iOS devices from your computer, and quit iTunes.
    2. Open My Computer from the Start menu.
    3. Choose Tools > Folder Options in the file browser window then click the View tab and change the "Hidden files and folders" option to "Show hidden files and folders."
    4. Click OK.
    5. Navigate to the following folder on your computer, noting that the drive letter can vary depending on which drive letter Windows starts from:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple
    6. Move the Lockdown folder to the Recycle bin.
    7. Reconnect your iOS device and open iTunes.
    Windows Vista or Windows 7:
    1. Disconnect all iOS devices from your computer, and quit iTunes.
    2. Open Computer from the Start menu.
    3. Choose Organize > Folder and search options. In the file browser window, then click the View tab and change the "Hidden files and folders" option to "Show hidden files and folders."
    4. Click OK.
    5. Navigate to the following folder on your computer:
    C:\ProgramData\Apple
    6. Move the Lockdown folder to the Recycle bin.
    7. Reconnect your iOS device and open iTunes.
    Mac OS X:
    1. Disconnect all iOS devices from your computer, and quit iTunes.
    2. From the Finder, choose Go > Go to folder.
    3. Type the following and press then Return:
    /var/db/lockdown
    4. The Finder window should display one or more files with long alphanumeric file names.
    5. In the Finder, choose Edit > Select all. Then, choose File > Move to Trash. Enter an administrator password if prompted to.
Note: Do not delete the lockdown folder itself. Only delete the files contained inside the lockdown folder.
    6. Reconnect your iOS device and open iTunes.

    Solved!
