Mac is saying it can't read my External Hard Drive

Somehow I have lost the partition on my hard drive due to corruption. The drive supports FAT 32.
When I connect to the Mac, it says that the volumes on the disc cannot be read by Mac. These files were all added to the hard drive using an older mac. I need to be able to connect to the drive and access the files that are already stored on it.
Can anyone help me with this? I am a little lost when it comes to this.
Thanks,
Andrew

An external HD consists of two primary components - the actual drive itself, no different than you might find inside your system and a drive enclosure.
The enclosure provides the interface (USB, Firewire, SCSI, SATA, whatever) and power supply (unless it is a 2.5" bus powered drive) that communicates with your computer's port of the same type.
Mounting is what a UNIX based computer system call recognizing a drive as available. OS X has BSD UNIX at it core, and common UNIX commands are available via the Terminal utility provided with the OS.
If your computer can not recognize the drive and wants to initialize it, and reports the size of the drive correctly, the enclosure is not your problem.
If OTOH, it is not "seeing" the drive, it might be a problem with the enclosure.
It sounds as though we are dealing with the first case - the drive is mounted, but the computer does not detect a valid file system on the drive. FSCK might, I emphasise MIGHT, restore the extant file system to health, but if the partition table on the drive is blown, it will not. I will go out on a limb and say you don't have a valid copy of the partition map, so you can't just rebuild it - few if any folks would have that.
If you care about the data, your best bet is the Disk Warrior program I referenced earlier. If that won't help, you could go the commercial data recovery route, but be prepared to spend mega bucks for a quality job.

  • My time machine back up error and now it says it can not read my external hard drive

I have a MacBook Pro Yosemite ...... I was backing up to a WD Elements external hard drive disk and I was in mid back up and everything was going fine..... then an error and when I went back to it ..... it said it no longer can read my disk? What can i do?

A  whole  lot  about  Time  Machine for help with TM problems.  Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM.  See also Mac 101- Time Machine.
Use Disk Utility to repair the TM drive.  If that doesn't help, and you don't find help from the above, then erase the drive and start a new TM backup.

  • I can´t read my external Hard Drive Anymore

Hi, I just got a new Imac, the slim 27 in. one, I connected an external Hard disk to it and everything fine for the first two / three days. Now It won´t even recognise it, the light on the HD is on but there´s no sign that the computer is reading it. I actually have the same problem with my Mac Book Pro, at first it read my Hard Drive and now it doesn´t recognise it. i did the Hard disk utility and I got nothing.
    Please Help!

You can try to do a Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets several times, if that doesn't work then try another cable. If the new cable doesn't work your EHD may have failed.

  • I have an external hard drive, from Iomega. However, I cannot copy or save any file to it. On my PC it says that is possible to read and write in it, but in my Mac, it says I can only read. can somebody help me?

I have an external hard drive, from Iomega. that I can open and see my files. However, I cannot copy or save any file to it. On my PC I have it says that is possible to read and write in it, but in my Mac, it says I can only read. can somebody help me?
Also, Im a photographer, so I like to name a lot of files at the same time (used to do in on PC and it was very usefull.) cannot find out how to do it on my Mac. Really appretiate if some one can give me a solution! Thanx

Your drive is formatted with the NTFS file system.  OS X can read but not write to the NTFS file system.  There are third party drivers available that claim to add the ability to OS X to write to an NTFS partition.  I have not tried them and don't know if they work.
The only file system that OS X and Windows can both write to natively is the FAT32 file system.

  • How can I get my new Mac book Pro to read my external hard drive?

I have recently upgraded to the new MacBook Pro and have a new 2T external hard drive. I used my old MacBook Pro to transfer all my files from my old 1T hard drive of the same make to the new one. This all worked without isssue and I can open the ne external hard drive on my old Mac but my new Mac is reading it. It does not show up in finder at all but it does show up in Disk Utility. Any suggestions? Do I need to do something on my new Mac for it to be read? The new Mac has no problem with the smaller USBs I use.

How do you have Finder Preferences set?
    Ciao.

  • I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?

I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?

In the Mac side of things, backups usually come in two flavors: clones or incrementals.
A bootable clone is a bit-for-bit copy of all essential files in the startup volume. If using the Lions, clones can be made using CarbonCopyCloner or just plain old Disk Utility. These backups represent the safest protection of your info, but take the longest to do. Recovery is an inverse process: you copy the clone back into the internal drive.
Incremental backups start with a complete backup of the startup volume and only copy whatever changed from the previous run. OS X includes the fully integrated Time Machine backup utility to do this. It is extremely easy to do and takes the least amount of time. Recovery is another matter altogether since you have to start with a freshly installed instance of the OS and have to apply all intervening backups to bring the result to the latest saved version.
As for where the backup takes place, the recommended media is an external dedicated drive or drives connected via the fastest interface available on your Mac: Thunderbolt, USB3, Firewire, or USB2. Network-based backups, wired or wireless, are attractive but may not offer the same performance and hence take longer. Also important to note that the entire drive need not be completely dedicated to a single backup. The Mac's EFI firmware infrastructure allows for an unlimited number of partitions on a hard drive and each can be used for either type of backups.
Holler if you need specifics on how to do each. This was just an executive summary.

  • Can I use one external hard drive for 3 of my Macs?

    I have a 2007 white MacBook, a 2011 MacBook Pro, and a 2013 MacBook Air.
I want to be able to transfer all of my precious family photos off of my MacBook and Macbook Pro onto an external hard drive and then wipe those computers clean, and then I want to be able to backup and wipe clean my Macbook Air so that I can update it to Mavericks.
Can I use one external hard drive to do this for three of my Macs? Will it be compatible with all of them? And will I still be able to use the hard drive with my Air once it is updated to Mavericks?
Which hard drive do you recommend?

    1. Yes. Note that anything you want to keep should be on at least two drives in case one of them fails.
    2. Yes.
    3. Yes.

Amd by "others" I meant other people on iPads - not other devices/manufacturers.  It's possible to do so, I just want to know how.  I honestly don't think we'll ever be in a Post-PC era until all tablets allow us to use USB in the way computers do.
No, USB is not the future, you missed the memo about cloud and wireless computing?

  • Why can't iTunes play music from read-only external hard drive?

I have a write-protected external hard-drive which I keep all of my iTunes media on. iTunes recognizes all of the files, including the metadata on the id3 tags, and can find the files in Windows Explorer. However, it cannot play the files while the drive remains write-protected. Is there a work around for this as I would prefer to keep the hard-drive protected? Why does iTunes require write-access to play songs? Other media players have no problem playing from my read-only external hard-drive. Thanks for any help

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
When you say you can't play through both devices at the same time, what happens when you try, are you able to select multiple speakers, do they deselect themselves, do you not get the option or does it just not work when you select multiple speakers.

  • How can I partition my external hard drive supporting mac OS in one partition and windows OS in another?

Hello everyone, how can I partition my external hard drive supporting mac OS in one partition and windows OS in another?

    OK. Start with:
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two (2). Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Click on the Erase tab in DU's main window. Select one of the two partitions, preferably the first one, change the Format type: to MSDOS then click on the Erase button.

  • Can I mount my external hard drive which will be compatible with both Mac and Windows?

    Hello,
Can I mount my external hard drive which will be compatible with both Mac and Windows? If yes, then please let me know, because I intend to use my hard drive for both Windows and Mac, without losing any file.

Yes. By default, Mac OS X and Windows can read and write drives which are formatted as FAT32 or exFAT; NTFS drives aren't writable from Mac OS X without additional software.

  • How can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory?

i don't know if this question has been asked before: how can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory? just like itunes all my song are save on my external hard drive. make sense?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
