MAC is SLOW, but only in certain users...

I hope I've placed this post in the right area. I am running 10.4.11 as you can tell by my bio. I have 4 users on the start up screen. Me, wife, 2 kids. My user is fine, everything runs smoothly, a little slow but that's due to the lack of RAM. (already have the additional ram on its way) My wifes user is very slow, firefox and the other browsers just run slower then they do on my user. It just seems that something is wrong with her user. Is there anything I can download that would get rid of any excess temp internet folders, cache, etc... Basically a clean up, and where would I look (folders) to clean up this mess. Is there a probability that more then one app. is running? If so how can I check. Or should I just save her stuff, delete user and then reinstate. HELP

You can verify or repair permissions only on a disk with Mac OS X installed.
In Disk Utility, select the disk in the list.
Click First Aid.
Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions.
As it works, Disk Utility may print messages about its progress and the special permissions some files use. These messages do not mean your files' permissions were incorrect.
Repairing Disk Permissions can fix a myriad of bugs when things go wrong on a Mac. It's a simple trouble shooting tool.
Your Disk Utility application is in your Application/Utilities folder.
So that you can better understand how Disk Utility works, launch the application, then from the Menu Bar click Help. There's an index available.

MacBook running slow, but only in one user account.

I have my MacBook 13" (late 2009) since Christmas '09. I've never had any problems with it until 2 days ago. I was in my user account and it froze so I was forced to Shut down my macbook by holding the power button. It took an hour to load the login screen and when I entered my password the loading screen displayed so I waited a while. But after a few minutes it just brought me back to the login screen. After a few hours I realized that this wasn't going to work so I did a safe boot. I managed to get into my account at last, but it was going slow when I opened up Safari, iTunes, and Firefox (Not all at the same time). It froze many times and once again I was forced to Shut it down. Yesterday I verified my disk using disk utility and it said that it needed to be repaired so I repaired it using the disc that came with my MacBook. I then reinstalled Mac OS X but it was still going slow so I tried a different account, which to my surprise worked at normal speed. It still says that it need to be repaired. My account it the most used and is used over 95% of the time and all my stuff (iPod touch syncs with iTunes) is on it. Could I have a virus? Please help.

Binding AD to OD but only for certain users.

We have a small (winXP) computerlab in an educational facility. In order to ensure that the computers are locked down they are all part of a Domain managed by a Win2003 AD server. I have done quite a few Registry Hacks to the Hive to make sure the users can't install software, or even see any drive's except, floppies, optical drives and zips. Our main service here is e-mail, and we are running an X-serve with all of the users in OpenLDAP (OD). We have quite a few users that we either don't need to be in our LDAP directory, or for security reasons shouldn't be, simply because they take a class for a semester and we never see them again. Some might say, well then just create a general account that the "outside" users can use and be done with it. The problem with that is, then all of the "outside" users see or can access the same "Home" drive. I suppose this wouldn't be a problem as long as they were notified that they could be giving access to their files to other users unless they used another storage mechanism (thumb drive, cd, outside FTP, etc.)
I was also curious what people's experience with using a hacked ntuser.dat to lockdown xp boxes was. I know it's possible, since that seems to be functionality built in. Also if anyone has had problems with multiple users using the same exact ntuser.dat file.

I figured it out on my own. I'd forgotten that my mother changed the account email addy, and I was changing it to the current one, which did nothing, as the songs were purchased on a second accout. Thanks anyway to anyone who considered rplying =)

I want to install an app but only for one user on my imac with Lion

I have 2 users on my mac. I would like to install some apps (iwork) but only for one user and not the other user. How can I do this?

Setup of iWork in your wife's account should only occur the once.
Updates can be performed through your account and are usually performed via Software Update.
Messages should not be popping up in your wife's account if all the iWork updates have been performed.
Go to Software Update and download and install all the iWork updates.
Unless you keep OSX up-to-date, messages will continue to come up when your wife logs into her account.

[solved[X superlaggy after hd went out of space, but only for one user

So the netbook (eeepc 1101ha) went out of diskspace while running and froze. I freed up some space and restarted X, but it failed so I rebooted. Same story then. It either loads and becomes super slow or doesn't load at all. I use dwm wm which to my knowledge doesn't save to config files that might have been corrupted during the moment with no diskspace. Other wms have same problems too, but only for that user.

If that doesn't work you may try moving all the hidden stuff to a backup folder and start the X session again.

How do I only allow certain users to print in color?

I work at a K-12 school and purchased the HP Color LaserJet Professional CP5225dn Printer (CE712A) for use in our computer lab. I would like to know if it is possible to have it so that only certain users can print in color (possibly put a password on it). I know the cost for color is higher, and therefore, would like it so that students have to approve through teacher if they want to print in color.
We are running it on our Print Server (networked) not through USB.

That's a very good question actually. In my corporate networks, we are talking about hundreds of laser printers and the ONLY thing we can do: only allow people access to a set of mono laser printers, not all printers. For example, the following printer is using B&W as default but can't stop users to print in colors if they could access to the resourse:

Some images do not load, but only on certain browsers

I have a really weird problem, I posted my web site and it appeared to work just fine with Safari, Explorer and Firefox. However, certain AOL browsers do not see some images. I can repeat the problem on the latest AOL client for Mac on two of my Macs here. My father inlaw says some of his friends cant see the images either (i am waiting for more info back from him, they all use Windows, so I think the problem is more than the Mac client).
The problem only appears when you try to load a photo page, it just loads the background and not the pictures. All other images load OK on pages that are not photo pages, and as they are all '.PNG' I cant see what the difference would be.
If anyone has a variety of browsers (especially AOL Mac) and can confirm this odd behaviour I would appreciate it. The page appears to complete loading, and doesn't show any broken links or errors - the pictures are just not there!

If you select one of the wedding albums at the top of the above page then on certain browsers the images don't load. (I only found a problem with AOL on a Mac so far, but my father inlaw's friends don't have Macs). The Macs I tried both had Java script turned on etc.

I saw a post from Quicktimekirk about punctuation in picture names. iWeb will have trouble with picture files if there is any kind of punctuation in the names. I would look up his posts and see what he's got to say about it.

In my case, QuickTime is slow to open up a video file (MP4, AVI, WMV, etc,), but only the first time. After I've successfully opened up the one video file, all subsequent video files open up quickly, even after quitting QuickTime.
However, after a restart it's the same old situation again.
Is QuickTime installing something, then removing it when the computer shuts down?

Error 906 when getting InitialContext (but only for some users)

I currently have an application where I'm attempting SSO. I'm obtaining the user's credentials using JAAS and then querying ADS with JNDI. All of our Java code is hosted through WebLogic 8.1. If I run the WebLogic process as a certain user, I can successfully authenticate and query ADS. However, if I run WebLogic as another ADS user, I get "Identifier doesn't match expected value (906)". This error occurs at the point that I attempt to obtain InitialContext (which means the intial authentication works). Anyway, these ADS users are in the exact same ADS group, and as far as I can tell, they have the same permissions. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks...
Also, I have debug=true in my jaas.conf, but it only spits out basic debug information. Is there some way I can get full debugging?

Safari stalls, but only on one user account

I am having a problem with web browsers, but only on one particular user account. Safari will usually (>90% of the time) stall after the blue bar loads 1/4 to 1/3 of the way. It will hang permanently and never complete loading the page. This happens primarily when I click on a link in any web page. I can sometimes (<25% of the time) go to a page by typing the URL in the address bar. This happens with any browser (Safari, Thunderbird, Google Chrome) with this user account. On all other user accounts, all web browsers work normally. The user account that is giving me trouble is the one with all of our photos, documents, etc., so would prefer not to simply delete this account and create a new one.
I have already tried emptying the cache, disabling the cache, restarting the computer, updating to the latest version of OS X, clearing history and website data, etc.
I have a mid-2011 iMac 12,1 with 2.7 GHz Intel core i5 processor and 20 GB of memory. I am running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 and Safari 8.0.4. I have a 1 TB hard drive with 630 GB available.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Telnet can't figure out route to host, but only on certain ports?

This only occurs under 10.5. In 10.4.11, I can hit the server on both ports through telnet.

Here's the strangest part:
ping <server>

How come it can figure out the route when using port 80, but not when using port 510? And is the inability to figure out the route the reason why Wireshark shows ZERO outgoing packets on port 510 when it fails to connect?
And why only on certain IPs? If I use "edu.yorku.ca", I can connect via telnet on both 80 and 510.

No, it only connects when I hit the server on port 80. Using IP or FQDN doesn't seem to make a difference.
If I try to use Network Utils to do a trace route, it too says no route to host.
I've got a G4/ppc running 10.4.11 attached to the same router, and it has no issue hitting the server on any port, and can do a trace route as well.

being a windows user I too looked for a book as I had pretty much all large OS changes like XP to w7Pro.... so barnes and noble has what I found to be an excellent book after looking through many at bookstore...
"OS X Mavericks The Missing Manual" which covers OS X 10.9.1 first edition was dec 2013 so recent book 850 plus pages of info and pictures very easy read and the views make it simple to follow.
Me I like technical info but this book is for everyone with sections on just about every topic the OS has.
I do believe I paid like $35 (US) but well worth it as I hadn't touched an Apple since 1988 with truly floppy discs we used to punch nothces in.
Author is a N. Y. Times writer who wrote many a "Missing Manual" as I can't remember the last time anything came with a manual. I had a $4600. windows machine built by Puget Systems and others over the years from Falcon Northwest.... none came with manuals other than similar to Apples quick info foldout.
