Mac is sluggish when using FCE 2!

When I drop a file in the viewer it plays for a few seconds and freezes. I can play the file in the canvas but it is sometimes sluggish. audio starts to drift away from the video. This is a brand new machine to me... Are there settings to dial in? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hello sir. I did all that was suggested and finally figured out that it was the files I am working with. I have a JVC Hard Drive Camcorder so I convert the files using Toast. I can edit using the canvas window and razor but not the viewer. The files play choppy at best. However files I capture from Mini DV run as expected... I still notice FCE is slow to open projects and switch modes but I think I may need mor RAM.... What do you think?

Mac Mini sluggish when USB external drives connected

I'm not sure what's causing this issue, but I have a Late 2012 Mac Mini and when I plug in a USB 3.0 thumb drive or my WD My Book Studio (also USB 3.0), the mouse cursor is very sluggish and laggy. I will physically move around my mouse and the cursor is extremely slow to reflect such movements on the screen. It did it with an empty USB flash drive, so there's no indexing or anything else going on in the background. Ejecting the drive will not solve this issue until I physically remove the drive from the USB port. What's causing this and how do I fix it?

format the drives for MAC OSX extended journeled.....when you do that, is the problem still present?
Ive head of this before on WD drives (cant stand them) because they have some nasty bloat loaded onto them for installing them (no need for that EVER) on your computer.
when you insert the WD drive, does the drive come up AND ANOTHER icon saying something like "WD xxxx" (i recall its something like WD utility, or WD support) ???
Ive got nearly 100 hard drives, but wont own a WD, ....if i get a free one, i destroy anything on it with a erase and wipe with disk utility "format for mac osx extended journaled"
AS FOR YOUR STICK DRIVE,......are you sure its mac compatable??? most stick drives list that in the fine print, and mac owners buy a cheap stick drive that isnt 'kosher' with MAC

Integration w/ Mac OS & MobileMe when using Referenced Library?

I have perused the threads that get into the Managed vs Reference debate. My question: If I switch to referenced system and move my original files off my MBPro, what do I give up in integration with Mac OS and MobileMe? I love being able to use the "photo browser" in Mail to share a quick photo or two with family members. Even admit to using the Mail "stationary" for a quick photo birthday greeting. I also use photos stored in Aperture on iWeb. And a MobileMe user.
Would the images still show up as the Preview version in these OS "browsers"? I have a hard time getting my head around how this all works. I need to move the master files off my hard drive to free up space and plan is to put on portable drive (and planned to switch to "referenced" system in the process.) An Apple One to One 'expert" recommended that I continue to use Managed System but move Managed Library off my hard drive and onto a large Portable drive. But (apart from the other Managed vs Ref debate issues) it seemed that I would then lose all integration except when I had the portable drive attached. Any insights here?

Problem solved via a discussion with a colleague today. In looking over the 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars' section in the iPad settings, I completely missed the option to add calendar accounts to sync via network. Adding the necessary accounts through that method---and removing them from the sync panel in iTunes---resolved my issue completely.
Both the setup screen on the iPad and the accompanying User's Guide seem to completely gloss over this point; I'm somewhat surprised they don't mention their own server product as a potential calendar source! Also, the choice to separate the form for adding calendar accounts from the other calendar settings on the iPad was a poor UI decision on Apple's part, IMHO.

My Mac is freezing when using Keynote 6.2.2

Since the new Keynote 6.2.2 was released, I haven't use it.
I only use Keynote 5.3, which is MUCH much better version.
But yesterday and today I have used it. But both times my Mac is freezing ??
And I can't do nothing. And have to press on "shut down" some minutes until the Mac finally shut down ( I have to "force" quit my Mac)
So what happens?
I have an OS X version 10.9.5 Mavrick, and with 16 GB ram. And it is only 1 1/2 year old.
I don't like, that I have to "force" quit my Mac!
So what shal I do??

I have OS Mavericks and use Keynote 6.2.2 regularly with out any problems.
Try resetting Keynote; perform all the steps in the order listed:
Remove Keynote version 6.5, you must use an application removal tool for this procedure to work:
Appcleaner is free, I use Appzapper
Empty the trash
Shut Down the Mac (Apple menu > Shut Down)
Wait 10 seconds, then press the power button to restart the Mac
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key,
release the Shift key when you see the grey Apple screen
start up will take a few minutes longer than usual as the Mac is performing a software repair
when the Mac has completed start up, restart the Mac normally, (don’t hold down any keys during startup)
Install Keynote from the Mac App Store

Mac Pro freezes when using external drives

I have a 2009 imac 27 and a macbook pro. I do a lot of design work so I have started saving all my work to a time capusle with both computers linked up to it. This has been fine for all software used, final cut, adobe cs5 master collection, cinema 4d etc.
My problem started when I got a mac pro. If I try to save directly to the time capsule I get the coloured "wheel of wait" and the software, eg illustrator shows 100% cpu usage and never drops back down. Eventually I can't do a thing.
I installed cs6 onto the macbook pro and got the same thing.
But, I also have the same problem if I try to put files on a usb stick from the mac pro, Finder goes to 100% cpu and stops responding or transfer stops about 8mb in and doesn't go any further and I cant stop the transferto try again. It's there until I reboot. Sometimes it locks up the whole system.

The Time Capsule is a horrible place to routinely save your files. Its drive is pathetic -- suitable only for backups, and the connection to it using USB2 is horribly slow.
You have a Mac Pro now. Put another "real" drive in a bay there, and enable File Sharing. Save your files there. (Gigabit Ethernet with Jumbo frames recommended.)
As long as you have an Apple Base Station hosting your network, you can even allow the Mac Pro to sleep and use "Wake on Demand" to wake it for Sharing.

Wireless insanely slow in Mac OSX, normal when using boot camp

I have my recently purchased Macbook (White) always in the same place hooked up to my external display, one floor above the wireless g router.
However, when I am in Mac OSX 10.5.5, my network is REALLY REALLY PAINFULLY slow. It has the same reception (airport logo almost full) but Safari times out, cannot sometimes even load Google, etc. etc., making networking almost unusable in Mac OSX. However, when I use Windows XP on Boot Camp, it is the normal speed.
My other Macbooks (older versions) do not have this problem. They all have Mac OSX 10.5 installed with all the updates, and have the same Windows XP in Boot Camp. Still I think this is a software issue rather then a hardware issue because in Boot Camp everything is fine. They all have the firewall turned on. They all have the same reception. They are all (alternate) in the exact same spot.
Any suggestions?

I even reinstalled Mac OSX from scratch, and still the same problem.
The update from some time ago (the Airport update for intel macs) does not matter.
Restarting my router does not matter. I also get good internet reception on my iPhone 3G.
And, in Windows still OK reception.
I have also noticed that my internet download speed changes from 20kbps to 80 kbps and back again.
Repairing permissions does not matter either.

Computer is sluggish when using iMovie and Aperture.

I have a mac pro dual quad core 2.26 ghz intel xeon with 12 gb 1066 mhz ddr3 of memory.
When I share my imovue slide shows to itunes I have to shut down imovie at least once and sometimes twice.
I keep getting a "not enough memory" error mesage that instructs me to shut down imovie.
Would adding mor ram solve this issue?

CS5 is one app that can benefit from 24GB for most users, and even 48GB if you need to push and stress things, but there too the processor GHz matter and 3.3GHz would help (4-cores) while save to disk or export is single threaded for most part.
I'd defer to the test but where and type of drive that Aperture uses, and system, that does matter, and there are times when editing will create a lot of temp files and shadow copies that you may not see.
Using memory as a primary scratch area (system and application data cace) but I doubt iMovie has been uptimized fully.

HAVE NEW 13.3 MAC AIR AND when using it to open sites in safari I have no issue until I go to a link page that is a pdf file or I am trying to save the screen info as a pdf. I only get a black screen with no data, cannot find solution in help menu

when i open sites in safari the page opens fine if it is not a pdf based page.
Once i open a site that has a link to another page that is a pdf based page the page comes up as a black screen with no info showing
If I open a site that gices me an open to save a file to a word, excel type document or a pdf , everything works fine until I try to save the information to a PDF and again the screen goes black
I have tried the safari help site but to no avail, does anyone have a solution to thid problem. (I do have the abode ofr mac program loaded)

If you delete all the Adobe Reader stuff it will probably fix this. For almost everything, the Apple pdf handling works better.

My Mac completely seizes when using the Gradient Tool in Photoshop CS5

I've recently upgraded to CS5 and in tandem have replaced my 8Gb of RAM with 16Gb on an iMac 27" with a 2.8Ghz Intel Core i7.
The problem that I've encountered with Photoshop seems to be connected with the COMBINED effect of these two upgrades. I just need to determine where the problem lies.
Whilst attempting to apply a gradient (white to transparent) using Photoshop CS5 on a CMYK file my Mac completely seizes. And I mean completely! No 'force quit' option, nothing. Even the little light on my mouse goes out. However, suspecting that it may be a CS5 problem I tried the same procedure using CS4. Hey presto – no problem. Narrowing the area down still further I re-installed the original 8Gb chips and the problem went away. Back to the 16Gb and the problem reoccurs. I've also found that using the 'Auto Merge' facility also causes the same seizure.
So, is it a RAM problem or a CS5 problem or a combination of the two? I've run Memtest the result of which indicated that the new RAM was behaving itself. The new memory is Kingston's finest and has had no adverse effects anywhere else on the system. If anyone can come up with a definitive answer I'd be grateful, especially if it means I can get my memory supplier to exchange my purchase gratis.

Yep, that's more evidence that the problem is in your hardware.
Application software cannot cause a lockup like that. Only hardware, low level drivers and the OS can cause a lockup like that.
In your case, it seems to be the hardware (RAM chips or motherboard).
Unfortunately, software RAM tests are useless. But you've got a test that stresses the RAM system more than those tests: it's called Photoshop.
We have seen several reports recently of RAM problems in newer iMacs. There appears to be a problem with the RAM specification, testing, or the motherboards. Unfortunately, we don't yet have enough details to determine the root cause of the issues. But most people have fixed the problem by swapping out the RAM.

Why does my Mac shut down when using Safari?

Every once in a while (randomly) my mac will reboot due to an error even when I only have the Safari Application open. How can I stop my mac from doing this. I have the 2011 macbook pro 13 inch with the latest OS (Mountain Lion). Everything is up to date but why does it keep shutting down?

Hi Sebaz, first try repairing permissions. Go to Applications-->Utilities-->select Disk Utility. Select your drive then select the First Aid button then at the bottom right click Verify Disk and after it verifies your drive click on Verify Disk Permissions on the left. If there any errors click on Repair Disk Permission. Reboot your machine and test your Safari to see if the issue comes back.

Mac Book Air, when using iMovie shows Half of actual RAM

Hi All,
I have noticied multiple number of times that when I use my MBA and run iMovie for movie editing. it seems to loose half of the RAM in my case I am using :
- 1.3 Core i5
- 4 GB RAM
- OS X - 10.9.1
As soon as I start using iMovie and use it for sometime... I see the that fan comes on after sometime... and then the RAM halfs its self to 2GB. The total memory shown as well is 2 GB instead of 4GB. Is this a known problem ir yes what is the resolution to this problem.

Should Time Machine Be Switched Off When Using FCE?

I have just started using TM and wondered whether its hourly backups are likely to interfere with the operation of FCE and similar apps?
I suspect they won't but as it's something new to me, I thought I had better get an expert opinion.

The Time Machine forum has an excellent FAQ submitted by Pondini.
In it he mentions what would appear to be an excellent free app for myself and others using Final Cut etc.
This is the TimeMachineEditor which allows you to customise TM so that you are not stuck with the automatic hourly backups and can arrange more suitable times or intervals.

Also, make sure there aren't any programs running in the background or launched sitting idle.
Make sure there aren't any startup items in your login that you really do not need running in the background.
Background apps and other apps in your dock sitting idle take up CPU cycles.
Also, 4 GBs of RAM is really, truly not enough RAM
With every new version of OS X, you need more CPU, GPU and RAM power.
4 GBs is fine for running the operating system, alone, but not enough RAMmfor running both the OS and something as CPU, GPU and RAM intensive like most high end CAD and graphics/drawing programs.
Are you running Autocad version for Mac or running a version of Windows on the Mac.
The latter would make your Mac even slower with only 4 GBs of RAM.
You need a lot more RAM!
Consider purchasing another 4 GBs of RAM and/or bite the bullet ( RAM for this iMac is not that expensive) and purchase enough to get you to 16 GBs of RAM.
That will help your issues.
Your running applications that need to have that extra RAM in there.

Which mac is best when using after effects and video editing?

i'm looking to get a new mac to do video edititng and adobe after effects. What should i get? A mac book pro, imac?

I'd get a MacPro with a lot of RAM. This gives me a platform I can expand through third party video i/o cards,esata cards for external RAID boxes, extra internal drives, multiple monitors, etc and will have the longest useable life span.
Your mileage will vary.
What it comes down to is ... Best is a subjective concept.
Best at what?
Absolute speed? Flexibility? Expandability? Life cycle costs? Low cost of entry? or ???
Define your needs, long term plans and budget more closely and what machine to purchase will become obvious.
