I can't stand peremptory affirmations like "Nothing is wrong with Safari".
Thousands of users can't be wrong (see the discussions).
If I read you the right way, it's never software' fault, it's the user who's the culprit.
Amazing!
In this very case, the fact is we can't give to "christinefromfonthill" a good solution because weren't sitting in front of her Mac.
You give her a good advice which could, perhaps, lead to an improvement.
But must also admit that Safari is a very slow browser compared to Firefox or Chrome.
And you can't ignore all the problems which arose when upgrading to Lion and were related to the new build and specs of Safari 5.1.
The best example is the apparition of "garbage type" (use of Last Resort font) when reading numerous sites. This never occured before and is the direct consequence of Safari compliance to Web Open Type. This standard prohibits the use of Type 1 Postscript Fonts and is the reason why so many people are in trouble.
I use a Mac for more than 25 years.
I am a very "clean" user who hates the bells and whistles of third party.
My Mac is always up-to-date and despite all my Mac loving care, I run into some problems.
Imagine the nightmare which can occurs for the vulgum pecus who isn't, by definition, a power user aware of all the requirements for running a System in optimal conditions.
May be Safari is one step in advance on its time but lambda users are paying the price for it.

Mid-2010 mac mini way too slow.
From the day we received it, this computer has run slower than any other Mac we have. We just tried relegating it to the computer that gets the least use. But over the 3 years we have called Applecare numerous times and taken it in and they always say it's fine, but it is always incredibly slow (and even noisy). You can hear it rumbling around whenever you have more than 1 applicaiton open. Now of course my Applecare is expired and I need to be able to use this computer on a regular basis. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
I have the same 4,1 Mac Mini and it runs really chipper, even on Mavericks. I have a 500GB 7200RPM Hitachi Travelstar (with 280GB of free space) and 8GB of Crucial RAM.
First thing you need to do is free up a bunch of HDD space. 37GB is well under the 10% needed to work in, plus you are working on the slowest sectors of a 5400 RPM drive.
Additionally if your running low on RAM in Activity Monitor, you should upgrade it to 8GB of RAM. -
I have a 4 yr. old iMac. I recently got a trojan on it that sent out emails to my address book. I got Norton Internet Security for Mac, and now my Mac is running slow, with way too many spinning beach balls of death. Was it a mistake to install Norton?

There is no such Trojan or other malware known today that will do that using OS X nor has there ever been one. The most probable explanation is that somebody hacked into your e-mail account on the server, so you should change that password to something stronger right away. If it had come from your Mac then there would almost certainly be copies of those messages in your Sent Mail mailbox. -
I allowed Apple updates about two weeks ago and now Safari is way too slow. I have tried using Airport and Ethernet and the problem is the same. Yesterday, I upgraded to Safari 5.1 and now the problem is worse. Any solutions?

Mac Os 10.7.4 too slow and buggy
Mac Os 10.7.4 too slow and buggy,
its random sometimes fine but mostly slow buggy, maybe the mac os needs a scan buit in to show whats responsible for slow speed.
like will it result answer conflict with 2 apps running or the mac os its self that sort of inbuilt mac os app is due for us users to enjoy and know
whats the real problem. like a light in the dark we need more tools in the mac os like whats running now in back ground and foreground and what
resources performance/strain is incurred. also is slow due to back ground anti virus work load strain on cpu and ram we need a mac app in built that
informs us who why and what, how and where then recommend the solution. like quit that app or upgrade ram so on.
or the app conflicts with safari example thus slow performance.
anyone else agree? anyone else know a mac app that will do ther above?
Mac Os 10.7.4 need bug fixes in next update of mac os 10.7.5 do we agree?like a light in the dark we need more tools in the mac os like whats running now in back ground and foreground and what

Hello, Ian. You will find the information requested above in the Mac Utility called "Activity Monitor" There, you can find what processes you have actively running, how much of your CPU they are taking, and how much RAM they are using. You can also check to see whether your RAM is sufficient by selecting "system memory" in the Activity Monitor. If you are getting lots of "page outs," this means that you are using your hard drive for "virtual" memory and should consider adding RAM.
With regard to antivirus work load strain, I cannot comment on that--I use only the Mac OS and do not have antivirus installed. However, if you search in Discussions you can find recommendations.
I hope this helps. Take care. -

New iMac running 10.10.1 frequently pauses, way too slow
I recently bought a 27 inch iMac, installed Yosemite, and migrated my files by time machine from a 5 year old macbook Pro running Snow Leopard. Since updating to 10.10.1, I frequently get the spinning beachball while I wait to continue, and everything seems much slower than it should. Safari downloads take forever, compared to Firefox. I ran an EtreCheck report pasted below. I tried some easy fixes like removing desktop clutter, reducing transparency, but that doesn't affect the overall slowness. Any solutions welcome!
Problem description:
Installed Yosemite on new iMac, migrating from snow leopard on an older macbook pro. Instead of being fast, processes frequently pause for bit while the beachball spins, then resume. Way too slow, much slower than my old macbook pro.

What cable do I need for a full migration from a 2011 MacBook Pro to a new current one-wireless migration way too slow.?
All you need is an Ethernet cable.
Just plug it into both machines. Don't bother with a crossover cable, just a plain old Ethernet cable will do. The Ethernet ports on the Macs are smart and will adjust appropriately. -
Our 4 plus year old Mac-Mini has gotten slower and slower. Is there a utility that would help speed it up or is there another?
Hello! I’ve offered the steps below to similar posts in the past and they helped out getting to the solution (or at least find the cause). I suggest them to you too in this case. It will take you about 30 minutes or less to do these, depending on how bad the problem on your Mac is.
The goal here is to boot your Mac to the so-called Recovery partition where you’ll have a chance to repair the disk and the disk permissions using the Disk Utility and Password Utility. This might solve your issue and even if it doesn’t- it’s still a decent maintenance step to perform. These steps won’t erase your data or reinstall your Mac in any way if you follow instructions carefully.
Here’s how:
1/ Make sure your computer is completely shut down.
2/ You’ll have to be quick next: Press the Mac’s power button. As soon as you either hear the loud chime, or see the display light up - usually after a second or 2 - on your keyboard press [cmd] + [r] Keep these keys on your keyboard pressed until you either see an Apple Logo with a loading bar or a spinning gear.
After a few minutes, you’ll be presented with a Utilities screen. This is the Recovery partition. If this step is already giving you problems, try using a USB-keyboard. It doesn’t have to be an Apple-keyboard. If you have a Windows-tailored keyboard laying around, use the “Windows-flag” key in stead of the [cmd]-key and it should also work.
3/ Choose Disk Utility and click [continue]
Disk Utility will display your computer’s harddrive in the left column. The default name for it is “Macintosh HD” and is usually the second one from the top. Click on it and click on the [verify disk] button. This will check your “Macintosh HD” harddrive partition for errors. If found, click [repair disk] unless you have a Fusion drive in your Mac and it says [fix] instead of [repair disk] please tell us before you continue! For a screenshot of what I mean, check this article from Apple: http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202574
4/ Once done with the verifying or repairing of your “Macintosh HD” click [repair disk permissions]
This will check your partition for permissions errors. A common myth about this feature is that it will fix all permissions issues on your Mac, which is not true, but it will fix most systemwide issues. Also, here is a list of error messages that you can safely ignore if they pop up:
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203172
5/ Lastly we shall do a permissions/Access Control List repair on specifically your user’s home folder with a somewhat hidden tool in the Recovery partition. Close Disk Utility and find the menu called “utilities” in the top left corner of your computer’s display. It’s in between the menus “edit” and “window” Don’t be confused with the menu called “os x utilities”
Choose Terminal. A somewhat old-fashioned looking window will pop up, waiting for a text command from you. This is the Terminal.
After the # type: resetpassword and press return. Note that there is no space between ‘reset’ and ‘password’
What you’ll see next is an rectangular window that gives you the option to reset passwords. We are not going to that, however. Instead, click on “Macintosh HD” at the top. In the pull-down menu below that, choose your user's accountname. Skip all the rest and at the very bottom click the [reset]-button.
A spinning gear will appear and may stay on for a second or several minutes. It’s hard to predict exactly how long.
If you have multiple users on your Mac, I advise you to repeat this step for all your users.
We’re ready to reboot your Mac now. Click on the Apple Menu and choose “startup disk” Choose to boot from “Macintosh HD” Please let us know if this solved your issue, or if the steps above did not work, or could not be performed for some reason.
If they worked I suggest you do these steps everytime your Mac becomes slow. -
My mac is becoming too slow. It takes long to open word documents, pdf files or excel documents or even safari. Can anybody suggest something? I have tried to reduce the number of open applications, but does not seem to work.
Hi ...
Checked to see how much free space there is on the startup disk lately?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
Freeing Up Hard Disk Space - Mac GuidesFreeing Up Hard Disk Space - Mac Guides
If disk space is not the issue, booting in Safe Mode deletes system caches that may help.
A Safe Mode boot takes longer then a normal boot so be patient.
Once you see the Desktop, click the Apple menu icon top left corner of the screen.
From the drop down menu click Restart.
See if that makes a difference ... -
Ios 8.0.2 way too slow on 16GB 4S
I updated from ios 7 two days ago and my 16GB 4S is WAY too slow. It is really noticeable in Mail and Safari, the two programs I use the most. I am really mad and discouraged at the lack of warning and the rather large (negative) impact it has made on my online life as I use my iPhone a lot both for work and pleasure. I did improve entering text in Mail by turning off the function that suggests a string of words as one types; at least I can type without stuttering delays...
Does anyone know if Apple recognizes this as a big problem and is working to provide an update for the type of iPhone and memory combo I and millions of others have?
As an (annoying) aside, I found the updating process to be very frustrating: I used iTunes - as presumably very few of us have 5GB free - but found the online documentation about matters like transferring purchased apps before starting the upgrade not to match the iTunes screens; plus I had to use Task Manager a number of times to shut down a stuck iTunes. Inexcusable for Apple not to have made this easy.Hello ralphensandra,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you can't update the iOS. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Resolve iOS update and restore errors in iTunes
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

"Full Screen Mode" in Adobe Reader XI for Windows 8 loads way too slow!
I recently got a new laptop with Windows 8, after having used Windows Vista for years. I installed Adobe Reader XI for my new computer. Before, I used Adobe Reader X on Vista. I used Adobe Reader "Full Screen Mode" to read the nice-looking Bible chapters I created with internet audio from Biblegateway.com. In Vista, the "Full Screen Mode" appeared quickly, before the audio fully started, so I could see the text in time for the reading.
However, with Windows 8, "Full Screen Mode" takes around 5-10 seconds to appear at all, and a black screen is present throughout the wait. It does the same thing when I hit "escape" to exit "Full Screen Mode" as well. I even uninstalled Adobe Reader XI from my new laptop, and tried using Adobe Reader X, even though it is not recommened by Adobe to do that on Windows 8, in order to test the speed of "Full Screen Mode" there. Adobe Reader X had the same problem! I do not know if this can be fixed, but I am pretty unhappy about it! I enjoyed the "Full Screen Mode" with my PDF chapters and the online bible audio! Finding that function for the first time with Adobe Reader X was a delight for me! It gave the reading a theater feel!
Has anyone else here had a similiar problem with "Full Screen Mode" loading way too slow on Windows 8? I am very disappointed! If this cannot be fixed by a user, is there a place to complain to Adobe and make a recommendation for software improvement? Thank you! From: Test Screen Name [email protected]

But it also hang the browser.
Thanks a lot,
Vu NguyenWell... Are you sure that the problem is within the browser? If both browser hang, then check if your OS supports the language the right way. Also, your browsers my have plugins/addons for supporting other languages. Try to look for them or/and post your systems-names here to help others helping you =).

Mac book pro running slow and word and excel from Mac not opening
Mac book pro running slow and word and excel from Mac not opening
Call it Monday morning humor.... ALL the MacBook Pro owners we see asking the same thing (more than once a day, too) are slower since 10.10.x so we can assume something. Heard the very same story with every new OS in the past decade from laptop owners, heard a lot especially with Snow Leopard back in Aug-Sept 2009.
A new OS goes better if you do a clean install / checked Roaringapps.com for compatibility / wait for vendors to have updates
About the only things that can be done in addition - if you have like many posting those symptoms have minimal 4GB RAM is to upgrade to 8GB+ and throw in a new 250GB+ SSD (the most recent MBP have to be bought with and cannot add RAM later).
Even the MacBook Air 2014 though with 4GB RAM have PCIe-SSDs that helps, plus 4th gen Intel i5's and an IG of 5000 or later all help.
Try including more details. Model year and configuration at least.
