Mac itunes 10.3 creates Windows library.itl
As of this afternoon, suddenly I find that my iTunes Library (not the xml) is saved as .itl, which I quickly found is a Windows file. (I have no Windows OS whatsoever on my drive.) When I try to open it, I get this error message: "The file 'iTunes Library' cannot be opened because it was created by a newer version of iTunes."
This weekend, while troubleshooting a separate problem, I downloaded iTunes 10.4 and OS 10.6.8. Neither 10.4 nor 10.3 will open the file.
I removed the .itl suffix, both in the finder and in the Get Info box. No difference.
WHY would my MacBook create a Windows file? And what can I do to get iTunes back to work?
Thanks.
Tom, thanks—good to know that the .itl isn't just Windows. Having not seen .itl before, and finding it mentioned only on iTunes Windows pages when I Googled key terms, evidently I wrongly inferred that it's just for Windows (which did also seem to fit, as with Mac it's always been simply "iTunes Library," no suffix).
The good news is that having just now opened again, it's finding everything as it should. Go figure. I can say only that, last night, before I tried anything else—when I was leaving it alone—it was not functioning normally, as indicated by the error message reported above.
In any case, for whatever reason, it's working now, so my panic is subsiding, blood pressure returning to normal ;-) and I appreciate your taking the time to respond.

I backed up library onto external drive. (itunes directory - with Album artwork, itunes music directory, and xml/itl files)
Now I am trying to upload music back to a new Windows XP computer - I have new itunes version.
First I moved/copied the itunes directory whole to the new computer - then opened itunes and the library.itl and library.xml reverted to 5 and 11kb
Then tried just moving those two files - still nothing
Help - as I have over 28MB of music I am trying to recover.
Thanks,The "missing file" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. I can provide a step by step guide if you give me the two paths.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.

Getting "The file iTunes Library.itl does not appear to be valid iTunes .."
Hi there,
Help please
Windows VISTA Home Premium, with Core 2 Duo 2.66ghz, 2gig DDR2, 300 gig SATA, 512meg nVidia card, dual DVD-RW's, clean install with purchased OEM VISTA from MicroCenter.
Naturally I ran into the VISTA errors everyone posted about, however after uninstalling and reinstalling the newest version, reloading my 600 songs and movies, subscribing to podcasts, etc.. I seem to get periodic errors when opening iTunes - where it states my library.itl files not a valid iTunes library file and marks my file as DAMAGED and I lose my Library. Is this an XML issue? It's very odd because it opens, updates podcasts, plays fine, syncs, then in the morning, I get the error stated above and my librarys hosed and I have to uninstall, clean registry, delete leftovers, try again... only to have it work for a week or so..
Any guidance would be appreciated!
JeffHmm.. wonder if this is still applicable - yes I realize it's being done on a Mac ..but it is an old version, but should work in theory (I hope)..

My daughter added more storage to her cloud while i was at work. When I came home and tried to get onto Itunes I got the message,'library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file. I tried uninstalling Itunes on my computer and reinstalled. After I tried to get in and the same message came up. I can get onto Itunes on different computers except one. Any Ideas?

Whenever I click on the Itunes icon, a window pops up saying that `The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes`. I then click ok and the pop up vanishes. Any ideas as to what I should do?
What version of iTunes are you using? An .itl file is something that Windows uses, or very old versions of iTunes on Mac. The library file on Macs is now .xml and has been since late iTunes 4.
Is iTunes running ok without any problems after you OK that message? If it is, then you may be able to ignore it if you can't account for why you're getting it. But make sure you take backups in case something happens in the future. -
A couple hours ago I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 7.1.2 or the newest version of iOS (not 8). When it finished, I turned it on and it showed a charger at the bottom of the screen and in the middle, an arrow, and at the top it showed the iTunes icon. I've never seen this before, so I took it as I needed to plug my phone up into my laptop? Well the first thing it said when I plugged it in, it said something like it can't be used until it's turned on. I updated it and it messed up even more, which caused me to uninstall all of the apple inc. software. I reinstalled iTunes and now when I try to open it, all it says is "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." First, what does the charger and iTunes icon mean when I try to turn my phone on? And how do I fix iTunes on my laptop?
Hello there, livviboobear.
It sounds like your error message is in regards to having installed an older version of iTunes on your computer. The following Knowledge Base article offers up the step-by-step on how to properly uninstall iTunes:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

Once uninstall, follow the link in the article to get to the most current version of the iTunes installer.

I just installed itunes on a Windows 7 PC. When I click on the Itunes icon the following message appears -
The Itunes Library.itl file cannot be found or created. The default location for this file is in the "Itunes" folder in the "Music" folder.
I have checked and there is a file named Library.itl in the "Music" folder. I'm not sure where to go from here so any help would be greatly appreciated.See Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash.

I have just opened ITunes on my Mac and the following error occurred "The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file.". When I setup my Mac I created a shared user area to contain my ITunes library so that I could share it with another user logged onto my Mac. However the error above gives me the impression that the library file is locked... I've checked and it does not seem to be locked under the "get info" fie information. Has anyone come across this before and found a solution?
You also need to make sure you have both read and write permission for the file, or for the whole iTunes folder for that matter. That's also done in Get Info for the file or folder concerned.

Hi I'm having problems installing and starting itunes program on Windows 7 64bit. After install the following error message is flagged - The file "i Tunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Would really appreciate any pointers!
Never mind sorted it out lol. Somebody did a system restore of a week or so. I had done the update during that time and it was lost. Just redownloaded itunes from the internet and its working fine now.

I updated my computer to Itune 11, did not like it, and uninstalled it exactly according to directions. I re-installed Itune10.7.021 for Windows 64bit, but now I keep getting the message "The file itunes library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. How can I resolve this problem?

Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

This is occurring on a Toshiba laptop running Windows 7. It appears no one has ever encounted this problem using a Windows 7 system judging by the lack of threads devoted to discussing this issue. Is this the end of the road for my participation in the Apple world, or is there a possible fix for this problem?
I run iTunes on my computer, on my iPad 2, and on my iPhone 4S.

I just got an iMac and used migration tool (PC to Mac). When I try to then open iTunes i get the message
<The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version.... download iTunes now?>
...but i have it already downloaded, when I press download now, it tells me I already have it, but it still won't let me open iTunes???Unless you've tried to install an older version of iTunes that message likely indicates a corrupt library file. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash...
