Mac janitor

I have macjanitor 1.3 and iv recently installed mac os leopard, now mac janitor dosent work, i click unlock after opening it, but the tasks are still faded out (grey'd out) so i cant click on them, i know someone els who has leopard on a imac laptop and it works, so i dont know why it dosent work on mine.

It's something I learned from either these forums or some Mac group on Usenet.
And it's easy to confirm: Check the timestamp of the /var/log/daily.out file. That's the output of the "daily" cleanup tasks which used to be run at 2 or 3am in the morning. My logfile here says it was created a 9:15am (local time), which is when I woke up this iMac from sleep.
Having said that, I just noticed that the timestamps of the weekly.log and monthly.log files are indicating that those have last been run months ago (my monthly.log is from December 2006). So it doesn't seem to be doing that for all the cleanup tasks ...

  • Leopard 10.5.2 and Mac Janitor

Is Leopard 10.5.2 compatible with MacJanitor? Is there a maintenance program that would be better to use with this update?
    Tom

i have no idea about Mac janitor, however i have been using Onyx and it works great. they just released a new version i believe that runs smoother and faster with less bugs than the last one. it is capable of doing alot more than i need but lets me check the hard disk, verify permissions, run scripts, delete obsolete items and clear caches. That's all i really use.

  • ClamXav, Mac Janitor and Neo Office

I've been doing research for freeware programs to support my Mac. After running across an array of applications I narrowed down to a few that peaked my interest. If you are running or have ran these programs before, please share your experience, their benefit, sustainability and overall effectiveness. Thanks

ClamXAV is an excellent anti-virus program that works well and its virus database is regularly updated. NeoOffice is a nice substitute for Office 2004 X. It is a universal binary and provides about 90% compatibility with Office's applications. It is a little slow because it is Java based, although the developers are working on a native code version. The program is under current development and support.
Mac Janitor is an older program that has not been regularly updated and is not very compatible with Tiger and Leopard. There are better alternatives such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, TinkerTool System, CockTail, and a few dozen others. Although both are shareware TinkerTool System and Leopard Cache Cleaner have always been reliable performers. You will find positive reports also for CockTail and Onyx.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.6.1 is Leopard compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial - not yet Leopard compatible)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

  • Has anyone used mac janitor?

someone recommended mac janitor but has an older os than me. Does anyone know if this is a good/the best option please?

I got rid of Cocktail after 10.4 because I had no use for it anymore, either. IMO, there is really no need to install any of these utilities, especially ones you have to pay for, unless some otherwise insurmountable problem arises (which pretty much never happens).

  • Permissions denied... Mac Janitor

It used to take several minutes to run Mac Janitor, and the screen would run through lots of text. The last couple times, however, it's lasted only about 30 seconds, and I've gotten this message, in the weekly output section:
    Rebuilding locate database:
mktemp: mkdtemp failed on /var/folders/IJ/IJ4RJBMEEiq4xFYBCoRDE++TI/-Tmp-//locateEXdhhERyTi: Permission denied
    Rebuilding whatis database:

makewhatis: /usr/X11/man//usr/share/man:/usr/X11/man: No such file or directory
Is this a problem? I don't really know what this means; if anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it. I'm also posting this in the iBook G4 forum, since I wasn't really sure which place would be the best...
    Thanks in advance!

This is really not the case. Currently Leopard will run the standard maintenance tasks at the normally scheduled times - between 3:30 am and 5:30 am depending on whether it's the daily, weekly, or monthly script. These scripts are now under the control of what is known as launchd - a daemon that runs specific control preference files located in the LaunchAgents or LaunchDaemons folders of the /System/Library/ folder. These control scripts will run the maintenance scripts at their scheduled times if the computer is running (not asleep.) If the computer is shut down or sleeping at the scheduled time, then launchd will run the scripts when the computer next becomes active.
There is a caveat to the above. The following is quoted from ( The XLab FAQs):
"While it may appear that launchd executes the maintenance scripts "on the fly" if the computer is asleep or shutdown at the appointed time, this is a side effect of how the timer treats time the computer has spent in sleep mode. The timer used by launchd does not count sleep time. If your Mac is asleep at the scheduled time at which a given script is supposed to run, the script may run later that day, at a time shifted by the amount of time the Mac was asleep. However, if you restart your Mac before the time-shifted execution time, pending events are lost and the script will not run off-schedule: the next chance for the script to run will be at its regularly scheduled time.
If you regularly restart your Mac and the computer regularly sleeps or is shutdown at the scheduled times, it's possible that the scripts will never run, hence one should still run them manually, say on a weekly basis.
The sleep time shift is also cumulative. For example, if you don't restart your Mac for weeks or months at a time, but let it sleep when not in use, this can result in:
The daily script running once every few days or never.
The weekly script once every few weeks or never.
The monthly script once every few months or never.
The time shift in each case is the total amount of time the Mac has spent in sleep since its last restart. If you have a process that writes heavily to the logs, you can wind up devoting good hard disk space to the log files."
Freeing up space is not the purpose of using Onyx or other utility for running the maintenance scripts, although that is a side effect of one of the scripts that clears old log and temporary files, but the amount of space involved is hardly significant. What you see Onyx doing most likely is removing cache files, something that isn't necessary unless you are experiencing operating system malfunctions. Clearing caches otherwise simply means you have to spend time during the next restart waiting for the OS to rebuild the caches you've deleted. Caches can take up megabytes of disk space, but they are there for a reason and except for what's stated previously need not and should not be deleted.
    Mac Janitor does not remove cache files. The way in which Leopard handles the maintenance services is generally adequate for most users. If you feel you must help them along then use something more appropriate than Mac Janitor. Please see;

  • Mac Janitor not downloading

I get this message when I try to downloadfor my laptop at Cnet :
    Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /~brian_hill/software/MacJanitor_1.3.dmg on this server.
    Apache/2.2.3 (Red Hat) PHP/5.1.6 Server at personalpages.tds.net Port 80

So, they're down (for downloading and their home page).  It happens.
Just tried myself and got the same thing.
By the way IMO a much better site for downloading mac software is macupdate.com.  Cnet ruined the old Versiontracker when they took it over. Here's macupdate's download page for MacJanitor (of course it downloads from the same site, hence the same result).

  • Mac janitor dwn load

    Hello everyone,
Just got iMac G5 for Christmas and dwnloaded MacJanitor, since I use sleep mode. When I tried to open the dwnload, message that there was no application to open the dwnload file. Is there an app. that you like to open dwn loaded files and is it available as dwnload itself? Thanks very much. I've heard great things about this forum. I'm a "switcher" from Windows XP.
    Thanks again.

    Hi Ken,
That's what the new launchd (in place of cron) enhancement meant, but it doesn't work yet as intended.
    Have a read of this
    - http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1384836#1384836
    for details.
We still have to run the three "cron scripts" manually, twice a month or so.
    l.a. ,
You might want to read my maintenance post too.
    Enjoy your new Mac!

  • Mac Janitor makes it go slower?

Hi, I ran macjanitor to tidy everything up on my macbook and since then, everything is running much more slowly... ie. it takes ages for programs to open, and, if I'm running more then one program at a time, every action is met with the little spinning rainbow. Help! I want my fast, flashy mac back!

When you ran MacJanitor it cleared the Caches.
For a little while things will be a bit slow as the MacBook rebuilds them.

Hello, This is my first post.
Can someone advise me on the best course of action? My Mini keeps telling me that I need more room on my startup disk. What should I do?
I keep deleating files (podcasts, pictures, etc.) but it does it again within a few more days. This is also making my mini slow down. I thought about getting an external hard drive, but was not sure if that would take care of the problem.

  • Power Mac G4 (1.25 Dual)

After installing my fourth hard drive, a 500G Seagate PATA/100, things were fine...I am running Tiger 10.4.9 on,my startup HD, a WD 250G ATA/100...other drives are SATA 320 and a 500 via OWC SATA card...I then cloned the startup to the 500G Seagate with carbon copy...but after a relatively short time of OK performance my startup drive started to act really sluggish...with 180 or so G still available I looked at the activities monitor...nothing unusual...ran my usual Mac Janitor...and shutdown...upon startup...nothing but a gray screen with apple logo...starting up with the CD and going into disk utility none of the HD's were available...totally grayed out...before I go any further...any suggestions?

In the meantime...I've installed a new battery...still upon startup w/cd my OS HD is not recognized...so I formatted the SATA 320 HD (zero) and installed a new tiger system...selected that as the startup disk...upon startup the mac cannot find the files...(blinking file icon and question mark)...because of this I cannot reset PRAM...so this is where its at now...new battery...a clean install of 10.4 on one of the SATA drives (PCI Card)...the busses in the box (ATA 100 = ATA 66) do not seem to come up on the profiler and hence the connected drives do not show up...like I've said earlier this used to work fine until lately the system got really slow and sluggish and finally kaput...thanx for your efforts...very much appreciate someone to share my problem with...

  • Getting error -21 all of a sudden and unable to open a video chat

Here's my issue, new 24" imac behind a Netgear Router using a fixed (reserved) IP from the dhcp. After opening all the ports that were needed by iChat AV I was happily video conferencing with others for a few weeks. Yesterday, after conferencing with a few people in the morning I was unable to get it to work later in the day and ever since. I have read and tried everything I could find to fix this and am at a wall.
I did not install new software between when it was working and when it stopped, about the only thing I can think of is I had WoW running and my eyeTV 250 to see if it could handle it. The TV video stuttered so I quit eyeTV.
Right now, I can text chat fine. I can 2-way audio chat. When I try and connect to a friend or any of the apple test servers (appleu3test01, etc.), my video window comes up waiting for connection then I get a "Disconnected from video chat because: Can't get video from the camera". The full error log is below.
Console.log lists this error: "2006-10-04 09:00:31.722 iChat[197] WARNING: Freeze-frame failed: couldn't get local buffer for layer Local!"
Here's a laundry list of what I have done so far to try and resolve it all resulting in the same behavior and the -21 error:
*Quicktime streaming is set at about my dsl speed (I tested the dsl speed at a few online testers). IChat set to Bandwidth limit: none.
*Reset the router to factory and reentered all the port forwards.
*Shut off every other machine in the house to make sure they weren't sucking bandwidth
*Bypassed the router, connecting to ISP with a fixed IP
*Disconnected everything from iMac (printer, EyeTv) and restarted.
    *Fixed permissions in Disk Utility
    *Ran Mac Janitor
    *Reapplied the 10.4.8 Update
    *Zapped the PRAM
*probably more I can't think of right now....heh
I got this thing 2 weeks ago and within days the superdrive died. The local Apple store has the part ordered (it's been a week). I hope my cam isn't messed up now....I suppose it's possible that some resource got fritzed with WoW and the TV running but since I have no CD drive I can't resort to a disk right now.
I realize this is long winded but I figured I'd err on the side of complete info. Any suggestions that you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

In System Preferences > Accounts > Your Mac User
    Account > Login items tab.
Is there anything in here to do with the EyeTV ?
Anything to do with any other Video App. ?
There is an eyeTV Helper app that by default gets set to load on startup. I changed the pref, removed the startup item and rebooted. Error still present.
Can iMovie see the camera ?
I had not yet used iMovie but opened it and checked, yes it can use the cam to record clips and edit them.
I have had no problems with ChatFX so I don't think
    it is that.
I have since removed it, maybe I'll reinstall it clean, might just tweek something.
My first suggestion would have been to delete
com.apple.ichat.plist as this holds the camera info
    but you have done this.
Yeah, I even deleted any pref that looked related. Just for good measure, I deleted the ichat.plist again just now, no luck. He's the odd thing, right now I have both my main account and a temp account on the machine logged in. I switch to temp, run eyeTV, photobooth etc and ichat connects to the apple test servers like a champ. I swap back to the main login and get the error -21. It will only connect via chat and audio.
That would make me suggest you delte any EyeTV .plist
items and see if that releases the camera.
    Just tried that, no help.
    Alos check Activity Monitor in
APplications/Utilitiies and check to see if any part
of EyeTV or WoW is running and end it with the big
red icon top left if it is.
Bizzarly check here also for a stuck Print Monitor
and end that if you have it.
Nothing from wow, killed the eyetv helper as I mentioned above and restarted. I'm running a lexmark 5150 printer on share and it has some processes and hooks into the image capture software. I killed all those processes, no help. It's got nothing in the print queue. I have previously completely disconnected the printer and eyeTV from the usb ports and restarted to see if that was the prob.
When video did work on the main user, I recall playing with some of the installed BigBang games software. Just to be sure, I have tossed any pref file related to those programs. When in use, the game software failed to make a good video connection (it uses little ichat video windows inside the game app) but it didn't break ichat. I was able to run a video window outside the game for my two kids that were playing and ichat worked fine after that for another day or so.

  • Start up problems with G4 powerbook

    hello all,
My Powerbook appears to start up fine, but about 3 mins after my desktop appears the system freezes. I can open applications in the first few mins but no mater what I do after a couple of mins the spinning ball appears. When this happens I can't even use the keyboard commands such as force quit.
What I find particularly odd, is that when the computer freezes it continues to sound like its processing something, but the only thing I can do is shut down the computer and restart it.
There is plenty of space on the hard drive and I do regular disk utilities and use mac janitor, so there appears to be no clear hardware or software problems.
Any suggestions as to what wrong would be very welcome!
    Thanks!

Activity Monitor is a good place to start.
Can you relate the problem to your starting up a particular application?
What happens if you log in and don't start any applications for, say, 5-10 minutes?
Have you been getting crash reports when you log back in? You might try to use that three minutes to look at the most recent crash log (in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/). Whatever application's log is most recent may point you in the right direction.
Also, you can access the console log through the Console utility (in the Applications/Utilities folder). That may tell you what was the last thing your Mac thinks it was doing.
Let us know what you find.

  • Please help: Powerbook G4 12'' painfully slow on boot and desktop

The first thing I did was search the forums extensively and have came up empty..
The computer takes about 10-15 mins to boot and loading any application takes about 30-90 sec to open and each action in the application is as slow.
    From reading the forums......
I ran boot disk for diskwarrior. Everything was fine.
Ran in single user and ran that script to check the disk. Everything was fine.
Ran disk utility and did the usual. Everything is fine.
I check to make sure all the ram (768) was recoginzed....it is...
I have no idea what to do now. It appears that the hardware is ok. Any advice?
Also I checked activity monitor for any processes that were taking up cpu
    nothing...

This problem could be caused by not letting the daily, weekly, and monthly scripts run. To run these you can download mac janitor, or run them manually. T run manually open a terminal window and type sudo sh /etc/daily you will be asked for your password. The replace daily with weekly, and then monthly.
p.s. If you haven't run this in a while it can take a long time

  • Time to Upgrade - Help!

I currently have a 1.8 G5 that I bought in 2005. It came with Panther 10.3.7 and up to now has been relatively stable. Since I bought the computer within the Tiger realease window, I have the Tiger disc in hand. Since I now need Tiger to upgrade iTunes, Quicktime and other items, I now want to upgrade to Tiger (also as a prep to Leopard).
My migration from System 9 to to 10 on my iMac was a total disaster, even as I had compltely mapped out the change. I don't want this to happen again. I have read many useful helps in these forums and are now trying to put together, hopefully, a good plan of implementation.
At this time, I have repaire permissions using Cocktail, updated all other items using Mac Janitor and am in the process of saving certain folders & files to a DVD.
I am most concerned about, after the upgrade:
    1. If my Airport connection will still operate or do I need to save additional settings.
    2. Will I still be able to connect to the internet without any additional settings.
    3. Am I missing anything in the process so I don't lose my Home settings.
I'm sure somewhere along these items, they may have been many items posted and the ones I have read have been informative, but I'm looking at the big picture and want to make sure I cover all the bases.
Do I really need to back up the entire hard drive? I'm not sure how to do that, but I did purchase a new LaCie DVD RW to assist me if that's the case. I have already used it to back up certain files and folders.
I've been a Mac user for years, it just seems that as more is added to these software update, you have to increase your learning curve by quite a bit.
Hope I've been clear enough on what I am looking for and I appreciate any assiatance. Hope I didn't get too wordy.
    Thanks in advance

First backup your current system. Make a bootable backup to a second internal drive or an external Firewire drive.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.
    Second, repair your hard drive:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Tiger Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Third, proceed with the Tiger installation. The default should be an Upgrade install. This preserves all from your previous system. Bear in mind that any third-party software you currently use that isn't compatible with Tiger will require upgrading.
Fourth, after restarting into Tiger run Software Update and install the required updates to bring Tiger to its current version.
Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values.
