Mac keeps freezing. hold down power until computer turns off.
My brand new macbook pro 13".... keeps randomly freezing up while on the internet, on legitimate sites. A black box pops up and says: You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until it turns off. So I do this, turn it back on, and ten minutes later it happens again. I've gone into disk utility to repair disk utility, any other suggestions?
Contact Apple and get it serviced or exchanged. You are experiencing kernel panics--usually hardware-related.

I apologize for writing a book, but I think explaining the full story may possibly get me a correct answer. I hope that someone can give me some insight as to what is the problem with my MacBook Pro. I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008), model identifier: MacBookPro4,1 running OSX Lion 10.7.5 with 6 GB memory. My wife first noticed a problem with the display. Every so often it would get fuzzy with jumping lines going across the screen making it vitually unviewable. The final time that incident took place the computer froze which required holding down the power button to restart the computer. The computer started up to the point of the Apple logo and the spinning gear for quite some time until the screen darkened from top to bottom displaying the following message in five different languages: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again." I have read other blogs and support communities where people get the message intermittently, but my computer would not go past that point no matter what. Through research and the Apple Store I was told that this is a Kernel Panic. The so called "Apple Genius" at the local Apple Store was unable to get the computer to boot past that point even with his gadget. It would not startup in recovery mode, safe mode or off of a disc. I forget exacty what he told me, but he said it was getting past the first two startup steps, but it would not get past the third step which is to mount the desktop. He guessed that it may be a problem with the hard drive; a loose wire or something or other. I disconnected the hard drive completely and took it out. Everything appered to be connected properly. Then I installed it back correctly, but it did not solve the issue. So I guess I disproved his theory of a loose wire... I purchased ProSoft Data Rescue 3 and connected my MacBook Pro to another Apple computer using a firewire 400 cable. I was able to get everything I needed off of the hard drive. I did some more research and I decided to restart the MacBook Pro in verbose mode (holding down the command button and V button). The computer magically started up!!! I was upset that I wasted my money on the ProSoft Data Rescue 3. I managed to take additional items off of the computer and back it up on to an external hard drive. After some time the computer froze. I repeated the power button process to restart and received the same kernel panic. I managed to get the computer to startup approximately six or seven more times via verbose mode; each time the computer staying on for a shorter amount of time before it would freeze. I managed to run Disk Utitlity. I performed first aid to fix the hard drive and it said that the hard drive appeared to be fine. After first aid I erased the hard drive and booted off of a Lion disc to perform a clean install or an erase and install. Lion installed until the progress bar got the the end where I received a message that there was an error installing Lion, please try again. Each time I attempted to install the software I would receive the same message. Eventually the computer would not boot from the Lion disc. I went back to the Apple Store and the Apple Genius was able to get the computer to boot off of his gadget where Lion istalled completely. I set up the computer as a new computer. He said that he partitioned the hard drive as DOS and then back to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which would get rid of any errors the drive may have had. He guessed that the problem was the hard drive, but was not exactly sure. When I brought it home I installed all of the software applications I had on it previously. Approximately three days later, which may have been the fifth of sixth time starting up the computer, the display became fuzzy again and the computer froze. The computer did restart once and I was able to retreive a "log" which I have pasted below. After if froze for the second time it restarted once using verbose mode and froze almost immediately. After holding down the power key to shut it down and then restart; I received the same kernel panic after the Apple logo and spinning gear which put me right back to square one. Now the computer will not boot via any method. It freezes at the end of verbose mode which forces you to hold down the power button to shut down. I also read that poorly seated ram may cause this issue, but I removed and installed the ram multiple times. I even purchased new ram from Other World Computing (Mac Sales) 6 GB, but that did not make a difference. I think I may see six possible problems on the verbose screen mode, five errors and one warning; I will type them out here:
1. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key $Num (kSMCKeyNotFound)
2. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: $Num kSMCKeyNotFound(0x84) fKeyHashTable=0x0
3. SMC: :smcInitHelper ERROR: MMIO regMap ==NULL - fall back to old SMC mode
4. WARNING - ACPI_SMCCtrlLoop: :initCPUCtrlLoop - no sub-config match for MacBookPro4,1 with 8 p-states, using default stepper instead
5. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key MOTP (kSMCKeyNotFound)
6. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key BEMB (kSMCKeyNotFound)
I was hoping that someone could read my log to ascertain wether or not they see a problem that stands out. I was also hoping that someone could tell me if verbose mode provides any information that may be wrong with my computer. I just hope that someone can give me some insight as to what may be wrong with my computer. If it is the hard drive I will easily replace it, but I want to make sure that is the problem first before I waste money on a hard drive or anything else. Please let me know if anyone requires any other information from me.
Thank you!

I also was well aware that Apple offered a replacement program that ended in December of 2012. I was going to add that in my original post, but I discounted that theory because I put my faith in the so called "Apple Genius" when I made my second trip to the Apple Store. I brought the NVIDIA card issue to his attention and asked him if he thought that may be the problem, but he said no. He said if it was the NVIDIA card that the screen would be completely black and there would be no startup chime. When I experienced the screen issues I thought it was a problem with the NVIDIA card or the logic board. I asked myself, how can a flawed hard drive cause the screen to act funny.
nbar and Rick Warren, I thank you both for your help and insight; people like you are the real "Apple Geniuses." I was hoping there was a way I could wipe the hard drive before I dumped the computer or attempted to sell it. I guess I will look into purchasing a new machine when I have the funds. Again...thank you both! -

my mac keeps freezing on highlighting only way to get out of it is to force a power down and restart
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Help! While doing workaday tasks on my 15" MacBook Pro with 10.6, I got the dreaded slowly unfolding darkened screen with the message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until it turns off." Kernel panic, I guess.
In the past, in the few times this has ever happened to me, I held down the Power button as instructed, and the Mac turned off.
HOWEVER, this time around, holding down the Power button does absolutely nothing! It doesn't make the computer turn off, no matter how long I hold it down, nor if I try holding it down in combination with other keys.
Needless to say, the OS is completely frozen otherwise, and no keyboard or trackpad actions have any effect.
And since this is the new kind of MacBook Pro -- there's no way to remove the battery!
So, is the only solution, to unplug it from the power supply and simply wait for 8 hours (or whatever) until the battery runs out of juice? Say it ain't so!
(I'm writing this on someone else's computer, needless to say.)
I NEED access to my computer's files TODAY for important work-related matters. Am I out of luck, or is there some secret way to get this darn thing turned off and restarted? If you insist! :

Powerbook freezing? Hold down power & restart?? Help!
Hi all,
This is a problem I have posted before & stills seem to be occuring
If someone can help me with this then I will be very happy...
I keep having problems with my powerbook.. First of all whenever I have booted up & am in mid-flow & my battery seems to be dying, whenever I plug in or out my power adapter I get a grey screen with lots of writing & a power symbol saying to hold down power & restart?? This is very frustrating whenever I am working on something.
Also the power seems to drain very quickly when I put it into sleep mode? I know it does very quickly as I have an old ibook & the battery last a very long time in sleep mode.. Note that the battery is a brand new apple battery..
I have ran the hardware test disc that came with the powerbook but there are no problems found at all?
Anyone have any ideas?? thanksIf the clock battery is under 4 years old, and this issue is happening, you may want to reset the PRAM and power manager yourself to see if it makes a difference following these articles:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
If neither helps, it may be the internal clock battery is in need of replacing, or the power supply inside the machine is indeed of replacing. Take it in for service. If the price is too high, see these vendors:

Have anew netgear router and now mac keeps freezing and iphone wont download e mails. Help
Hello TracyOShea,
It sounds like your Mac is becoming unresponsive for no apparent reason. I recommend starting by resetting your computers SMC:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Then perform a Safe Boot, and then restart the computer again and retest the issue:
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), follow these steps.
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key.
The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
After the logo appears, you should see a progress bar during startup. This indicates that your computer is performing a directory check as part of Safe Mode.
To leave Safe Mode, restart your computer without holding any keys during startup.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
All the very best,

my mac keeps freezing when i try and print anything from preview. any ideas as to what the issue is or how to fix it?
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
My mac keeps freezing...How can I uninstall lion?
My mac keeps freezing on me, particularly when Im on safari. The most annoying part is that it happens three or four times in a matter of an hour, and then Im prompted to submit a report that feels like a joke considering that we have yet to see an update for lion solving this issue, and the problem persists. How can I uninstall lion and get macs previous iOS back?
Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files. -
Mac Keeps Freezing When Internet Browsing
Hey guys,
I don't know if this'll help but all the threads I usually go on, the person with the problem usually gives their computer details, so:
- OS X Yosemite 10.10.1
- iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012)
- 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5
- 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M 512 MB
Well, anyways, now to the problem;-
Lately, whenever I'm browsing the Internet on Google Chrome of Safari, 100% of the time after about 10 minutes it will always freeze for about 30 seconds, then go back to whatever it was doing. It will do this a few times until it freezes for good (spinning rainbow wheel), and I actually have to turn off the computer.
In the past, I have accidentally installed an adware called Genieo, which I got removed when I went to the mac store. I'm not sure if that's come back to haunt me, or I have done something else stupid while browsing. I haven't installed any software applications recently, which has got me confused as to why my mac keeps freezing.
Also, if I'm browsing on Google Chrome and it doesn't freeze, shockwave will always crash whenever I try to view something, then it will freeze.
After this, when I try to turn my computer back on, the kernel on the white screen will always come up, which I then have to manually turn the computer off again. It usually turns on normally after a few times of trying.
I've gone onto Recovery Mode and verified my disk many times, to which it says there are no problems.
I've looked up Antivirus' for mac, and have come across a few (Avast, CamXav, etc), but I have also browsed many forums with the majority of people saying your mac doesn't need an antivirus and it will slow your computer instead of benefiting you, so I'm not sure what to do.
Just wondering if anyone else has come across problems similar, or know how to fix this. Should I install an antivirus? Should I go to the mac store (last resort)? Will reinstalling OS X or restarting then booting up from Time Machine with my external drive help?
Thanks.

Just listing everything wrong just in case these are symptoms of something and there is a solution, thanks.
The suggestions in the 2 links I previously posted did not work?
If you have Apple Care, call them & let them deal w/it.
OOW, try the following:
1 - set up a test account. You need to determine if the problem crops up in the test account. This will determine if the problem is system wide or not.
2 - Run Apple Hardware Test. Make sure when troubleshooting you have disconnected all devices from your comp except for the keyboard.
3 - Run OS Recovery again. Only this time select "Repair Disk."
4 - Reinstall the update. Only this time use the OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 Combo Update
5 - Take your comp to your local AS or an AASP. Diagnostic testing is FREE! -
Osx10.6 keeps freezing how can I fix without turning power off?
osx10.6 keeps freezing how can I fix without turning power off? It has happened a dozen times in the last ten days -
Force Quit will not respond
When the freeze occurs the cursor will move, but not activate any application
The only way to restore activity is to turn off MacBook with power button
I do not like doing this, and am happy that so far Time Machine has not stopped functioning when I turn power back on.Yesterday my macbook pro freezed again, two times in 20 minutes!!!
When i restarted the computer there was this message (maybe it is useful for resolving my problem):

Thanks,I had already written a book and I did not want to bombard people with more information, but in my previous research I did come across the major issues with the NVIDIA card.
iPhone 5s intermittently powers off. I have to do a hard restart (simultaneously hold down power button and home button). Is there a cause and a fix for this?
Hello TJLapplesupportcom,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Please follow the troubleshooting steps below to resolve this issue you're having with your iPhone.
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?

My computer is running SO slow. The intermet also keeps freezing up and I have to turn airport off then back on/refresh before it will work again. I dont have enough space on my start up disc to run certain programs. It will say I need to quit programsin order for things to run. Easiest way to fix? Im not great with computers!
Running mac os x version 10.6.8Easiest way is to have an external drive to which you copy the things you store like pictures, movies, and music
which take up a lot of space. Then delete them fron the main drive and clean it up with one of the maintenance utilities. You can readily access the external drive's contents whenever you wish.
