Mac keyboard on a PC?

OK, this is a bit off topic, but I'm not sure where to go with this one.
I'm doing some volunteer tax work this year. The site I'm working at is equipped with a bunch of IBM laptops wired into a network. (Hey, they use IRS software so one can't even make the Mac/PC argument). The keyboard is small and lacks a numeric keypad. i.e. it's not the best of arrangements for doing financial work. Not sure why they went this route, but it's not for me to decide.
The manager of the site mentioned that I could bring my own keyboard if wanted to and plug it into the USB port on the computer (others did this last year).
Q - I have an old keyboard that came with a G4 still around. Should it work? I'm assuming some of the special Mac keys won't work, but aren't most keyboards standard? or not? I see keyboards at on-line vendors that work both systems.
Thanks
Ken

    rajlego,
in the Keyboard pane of System Preferences, select the Shortcuts tab, and then select Mission Control on the left-hand side. On the right-hand side, make sure that the Mission Control checkbox is checked, double-click on its current key combination (by default “^↑”) so that the key combination is highlighted, and then press the F3 button — that will set its shortcut to be F3. You can now press F3 to bring up Mission Control without needing to also press the Fn button.

  • Mac Keyboard Functions Don't Work

I have just discovered that the Mac keyboard has a very useful feature: press and hold a key and all the options for that character show in a little pop-up window, i.e., accents, tilde's, etc. This works in all my other programs (Word, Excel, Pages, Mail, etc.), but not in Adobe's Illustrator or InDesign. I do a project every summer that has lots of foreign names and words, and I am constantly having to ferret out these unusual characters, so having them all available right on the keyboard would be a huge time saver for me, so I was devastated to learn that Adobe's programs don't support them (when I press and hold a keyboard key in InDesign, it just repeats the character over and over as long as I hold the key down, which is the way the keyboard worked several Apple systems ago). Is there a preference or something somewhere that I am missing?

While InDesign and Illustrator don't have access to the Apple feature to show special characters, you have an even better feature in InDesign and Illustrator—the Glyphs panel. It lets you view every character (glyph) in every font on your computer. You can insert a character by double clicking it. In InDesign, choose Type > Glyphs to open it up. Use the font menu at the bottom to switch fonts. Choose from the Show menu in the middle some collections of special characters for different purposes.

  • Using a Mac Keyboard on a PC?

Does anyone know if its possible to use a mac keyboard on a PC? If so, are there drivers that Windows will require in order for it to function properly, or will Windows treat it like any other keyboard?
Before you even ask why I would do this...I really like the new Apple keyboard and would like to buy one for work to use as my main keyboard there as well.
    thanks

Hey, I run an Apple keyboard on a Windows machine all the time.. I assumed you are talking about a newer keyboard as I don't have much experience beyond 3 years ago keyboards.. It works fine.. Of course some of the Apple specific keys such as Command don't have a special meaning in the Windows environment but the keyboard has Alt and Control which are commonly used..
    No drivers necessary.. Just works...

  • MAC Keyboard - Works on a PC but not my MAC

    Yup... makes no sense huh?
I bought a used MAC G4 Quicksilver, came with mouse and keyboard. I plug the keyboard in and all works fine, except the "END" key and the "NumLock" key... maybe a few other but haven't noticed yet, just these two so far. Numeric pad displays numbers when typed, letters are fine...
I plus the MAC keyboard into my PC and works fine, can toggle the NumLock light on/off and the END key brings my cursor to the end of sentences I am typing.
My PC keyboard is PS/2 so, can't see how it works on the MAC.
I have since formatted the system and reinstalled MAC OS 10.4.4 and applied the 10.4.6 update and still the same issue.
Main problem I have now is I bought a TrippLite USB KVM switch so that I can alternate between systems and of all the luck, the hotkey to switch systems back/forth is to hit the NumLock key twice fast. I can switch to the MAC then I can't switch back because the NumLock key doesn't work in MAC.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm new to MAC but find it ironic that the MAC keyboard detects and works fine on a PC and not on a MAC.
    Thanks

Anyone at all? Any settings or anything to be set? Nothing?

Thanks for your observation. I realize they are different versions, but when I use the "Software Update" menu, this is as far as it would update. Is there some way to update the iMac beyond what "Software Update" does? I've tried it several times.
    Please Note.
Upgrading OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) to 10.8.3 (Mountain Lion) is not an update. It is a paid upgrade. Just as with 10.7 (Lion) you must purchase it from the App Store with yor Apple ID and install it after backing up your current computer state for safety.

  • Cannot pair my mac keyboard to apple tv 2

I have no problem connecting any wireless devices in my home.  trying to connect or pair  my mac keyboard to apple tv, through bluetooth and it doesn't pick up any signal for the keyboard.

  • My MacBook Pro keyboard not working correctly after Win7 bootcamp installation. In OSx boot it keep Win keyboard. How can I have Mac keyboard in OS boot and Win keyboard in Win boot?

My MacBook Pro keyboard not working correctly after Win7 bootcamp installation.
Installation went well but when I boot either with OSx or Win it always keeps Windows keyboard.
How can I have Mac keyboard in OS boot and Win keyboard in Win boot?

Hi - I have the exact same model as your MacBook and had a few questions as mine is acting up. I upgraded the ram to 8gb (2x 4GB ram) and ever since then my computer has not been running as smoothly and the start up time is horrendous. Have you encountered this problem? And if so how did you fix? What would you advise me do?
I was thinking of reverting back to the original factory 4GB then rebooting the entire computer. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Ctrl-alt-end on mac keyboard

Our system at work uses WIndows XP and I can now use Remote Office to get on the system from home. Previously, I had to run Parallels Desktop for windows. Now, I can run it from Safari, except to begin the login process, I must hit the combination of keys "Ctrl-Alt-END" I have looked at discussions and they say end is accessed using the command key and the left or right arrow. No luck with that.
Do I hit the control key, alt key, command key and right arrow at once? I tried that and it didn't work. Parallels for Windows has a virtual Windows keyboard, but there doesn't seem to be the same WIndows keyboard on Mac OS. Help!!

the options key on the mac keyboard should map to the windows alt key, so the key command should be control-options-end.
You should be able to enable "Remote Access" on the windows XP machine (get properties on My Computer and enable it in the "Remote" tab). Then download Microsoft's "Remote Desktop Connection" software and connect to your work PC by entering it's IP address.

  • Mac Keyboard Shortcuts

Edge Code seems pretty useless if it doesn't support standard Mac keyboard shortcuts and conventions. For instance, Command-e is supposed to load the selected text into the system-wide "find", so that any subsequent Command-g will "Find Again" that text in any Cocoa-based app that supports searchable text (such as Mail, BBEdit, Safari, iBooks (somewhat), Notes, etc. In Edge Code Preview, command-e does something else entirely.
Plus, drag and drop of text is not even supported. Come on, seriously?!?
Basically, this is like using a software program from before OS7, in the late 90s.

Thanks for the explanation. I wasn't aware of that functionality. Sounds interesting.
    > if you don't even support the standard Command-E
It's supported. It's just a different keyboard shortcut key: Cmd-Shift-B
No, Cmd-Shift-B just seems to be "Find Again whatever is currently selected". It doesn't change what I am finding in other apps, and "Command-G" doesn't find-again what I selected and did Command-E on in other apps. That is slightly similar, within its own silo, but is far from supporting "the standard Command-E".
    > regular expression "grep" searches, searching with or without case sensitivity
    Both supported in Brackets.
OK, I didn't recognize that in the UI until now, and it's weird to have to use a different command to get to "Replace", but I'll give you this one.
    > changing the case of the selection, viewing invisible character
    Supported as Extensions
    > finding and changing differences in 2 side-by-side files one line at a time
Brackets does not yet have "diff" support, but that's better handled as an extension, anyway.
I disagree, but I guess being able to cobble together fuller functionality from a bunch of independently written extension modules is better than nothing. Are you going to build in a way to browse the catalog of extensions?
Thanks for your feedback. Yes, there's a lot more we want to implement in Brackets. Stay tuned.
    OK

  • Why is my numpad acting like an arrow pad? (Aluminum Mac keyboard - wired)

I'm using an Intel iMac Core2 Duo and I've just attached a *brand new aluminum wired Mac keyboard* to it.
My problem is: the numpad at the rightside of the keyboard does not function as a numpad. Instead, +it's functioning as an arrow-pad+! When I tap "4", the cursor travels leftward. When I tap "6", the cursor travels rightward. When I tap "5", the it activates the cursor on screen. When I tap "9", my cursor travels diagonally rightward.
I simply can't get my numpad to function as a normal numpad! I've tried plugging in an older Mac keyboard (white keys and clear plastic), and the same issue arises. So I guess it must be an iMac issue?
I've tried searching through my system preferences for the mouse and keyboard and nothing seems to be amiss....
What do I do? It's really quite annoying, because I want a normal numpad!

Oh ... I figured it out already!
    Instructions:
Press the Option key five times. (You must first turn on this shortcut in the Mouse pane of Universal Access preferences.)This turns on/off the numpad function so that it either activiates the mouse or just acts as a normal numpad.
    Kinda cool!

  • The "enter" key on the numeric keypad of my external mac keyboard has stopped working. Help!

The "enter" key on the numeric keypad of my external mac keyboard has stopped working with my Macbook pro.  If I plug the keyboard into any other computer, that entier key works fine. I'm using a standard Mac wired keyboard, & it's worked fine for 2 years now. Help!
This is the keyboard I am using: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB110LL/B/apple-keyboard-with-numeric-keypad
Not sure what I might have accidentily done to disable the enter key. (The normal enter key works fine, just the one on the numeric keypad.)
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi there,
Do you have any resolution to this problem in the end? Because it happened to me an exact same thing.
Please share if you have found a solution to your problem. I also cannot think of what I did wrong to disable the Enter key.
