Mac locks up after 10.5.2 update

its happened about 5 times in a row now. after i restart, the computer will run fine for about 5 minutes and then just lock up. the fan starts to spin real fast too. anyone else?

YOU ARE NOT ALONE! I used to run my MBP for days without shutting down - just sleep. The morning I updated to 10.5.2 - i was locked up inside of 5 mins. That day it happened 4 times. The first 2 happened quickly. I had to hard-power-off the machine in order to free the lock - although my mouse cursor was still responding - even itunes continued to play in the background.
Since I upgraded to 10.5.2, it has happened a total of 8 times. Is there an easy way to downgrade back to 10.5.1 until this issue is sorted out?
I thought it might be software related - since the first two times it happened I was in Entourage. However its happened when I was in Photoshop as well.
I haven't noticed my fan going off - but it sure does lock up nice and tight.

Browser seems to lock up when left idle for a few minutes. Was not acute after 3.6.10 update but it has now become chronic. Browser will close when prompted however any other commands fail. Once browser is closed it will not open. Will only open once they system is rebooted.

Only recent change was I was unable to use windows update and it required tech support with microsoft and I had to make a few registry corrections at their request. Problem resolved. Unknown what caused that error as I am not tech savvy.
I have had some malware alerts and what not but all were caught and addressed by the various alerting software. Least that is what I am left to believe.

Update,
While posting this question I was using Firefox...was prompted to check my email, thunderbird, to confirm the post. Opened the email and clicked on the link and since firefox is my default browser, it would not open. Once again had to reboot in order to get firefox to work again. Using it right now but for how long before the next lockup, I don't know.

New to Macs with problems after 10.4.9 Update

Greetings.
This is my first post on these forums, so please forgive the newbieness..
I received a brand new 15" MacBook Pro 2.13GHZ less than a week ago. I have since installed another 1GB of memory in it and it has been running absolutely beautifully! I'm in love and have officially switched from using Vista (I was even a Vista beta tester).
Yesterday morning I applied the 10.4.9 OS update. And since then I have noticed a couple things that seem to be "off".
Granted, I have had less than a week with my MBP, so it's really hard to tell if these issues are related to the 10.4.9 update or they were always there and I never noticed. Here are my issues currently.
1. Sleep. When I close the lid of the MBP, it goes to sleep, which is normal. But when I open it back up, it seems to want to wake up, but doesn't. I usually have to hit the space bar to wake it again, type in my password (I have a screensaver password setup) and then it tries to wake again. Then goes back to sleep immediately. I repeat the process either 2 or 3 times until it finally fully wakes up.
2. Network. I had a WiFi network at home and a Wired network at work. Before the update I was able to connect to both with no problems at all. No user interaction was needed. I would just go home, wake the MBP from sleep, and it would automagically connect to my WiFi router, then going back to work, I would just plug in the wired network cable and automagically it would work.
Now after the 10.4.9 update, this functionality has seemed to stop. Both networks run of DHCP and no matter how much I release and renew the DHCP IP address at either location, it just doesn't seem to want to connect. Every time i've had to do a reboot of the MBP to get Network functionality to work again.
As I said before, I am not sure if this is because of the 10.4.9 update, since I've had so little time with the MBP. It's hard to gauge. I believe that it is the case though, because I definitely do not remember these two issues happening before.
One more thing to note is that I take my MBP to work every day, and bring it home at night, I don't shut it down, I just put it to sleep by closing the lid. There isn't much of a time that it is asleep, because I literally work about 5 minutes away from my apartment.

G5 locked up after 10.5.8 update attempt

Ran the update on my MacBook. No problems. Figured it was safe to do the same on the Dual G5. Computer was working beautifully on 10.5.7 with no problems, so it should be fine with the updates. It is a Mac after all. Not so. Here's the scenario:
Ran the update. All seemed to be going fine during installation. After restart, g5 froze. Gray screen, Apple logo, spinning ball. I thought that it just might be taking longer with the older Mac and I left it on for several hours. No change. Went to the forums. Tried everything suggested: boot with shift key, boot with c key, pram boot, unplugged power chord waited 2 minutes boot, tried to boot from the 10.5 disk, tried to boot from 2nd hard drive.
Nothing worked. Every reboot gave the same non-response gray screen/apple logo/spinning ball EXCEPT booting from the 2nd drive. When I attempted to boot from the 2nd drive I received a panic freeze.
Can anyone give me some insight on this? Was this the 10.5.8 update? Did the logic board die? Did both hard drives give up the ghost at the same time? Is this a government conspiracy?
Seriously, any help given would be appreciated. This is a music production mac and I need her up an running. Thanks!

-The 2nd drive has Leopard on it as well.
-I've been running time machine as a backup, but can't get it to let me access this on boot up.
-Also tried booting with option depressed but no change. When I start up while holding a key I receive no chime. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse and fear that they are not connected since the computer can't get that far in the boot process. Please let me know if that is a stupid thought. If not, I will go out and get a usb keyboard.
When the computer boots, you can hear that it is accessing the optical drive first. It spins for about 10 seconds, then it stops and it sounds like it is reading from the hard drive. Then it goes into the endless loop of gray screen etc.

IPhone 6 Plus no longer shows time on the lock screen after iOS 8.2 update

Question as seen above. after updating my iPhone 6 Plus to iOS 8.2, it no longer shows the current time on the lock screen. It also takes a couple of seconds for it to load the status bar at the top of the screen. Restoring from iTunes didn't fix it. Please help!

Help... Mac cant sleep after 10.4.3 update...

When I put my rev. B Imac to sleep, it will wake up again by itself after 3-5 minutes and the fans will be running at full blast. I try to navigate around, but everything is frozen. The only way to get out of this is to manually power down the mac. I ran console and this is what it says...

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
-/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
-/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
In some cases, running MacOS X's cron tasks-maintenance that the OS performs automatically if you leave your Mac on 24 hours a day-can resolve many sleep problems. If you don't want to leave your Mac on, you can use MacJanitor, Yasu, or OnyX free at Versiontracker.com.

Can't receive calls on locked iphone after 2.0.1 update

since i updated my original iphone from 1.4 to 2.0.1 firmware, i have the following problem: when the iphone is in use, it receives calls just fine. but once the phone is locked (that is, the screen is black), all of a sudden it can't receive calls anymore. it does not ring or vibrate. only after it is unlocked again, i get a "missed calls..." message. any ideas?

This includes MacBooks and MacBook Pros of the 2.2 GHz cohort, the MacBook Airs, and certainly others as well.

That can happen, but I'd blame it on some corruption or misconfiguration of your computer, or possibly a hard drive that's on its way out.
Chips, wires, CPU, and so forth are not all the same. so every Mac will not perform the same as the other. Some are better some are worse. I have witnessed it personally.

But when you take an iMac that screamed with 10.4 and put on 10.5 and it slows, and slows, and has problems after trying to update to 10.5.5 and getting an install failure, I sense it is a 10.5 issue with the architecture.
Maybe, or maybe an iMac that's been corrupted, misconfigured, or has a dying hard drive.
I have a G3 Yosemite running 10.4.11 and it is faster than when it ran 10.3. Go figure.
Doesn't seem mysterious to me, sometimes a new major version will include significant new optimization.

G5 Dual 2.5 (June 2004) Power Mac LOCKS UP After 20 -30 Minutes

Ever since the Apple 5.1.8f7 firmware update just before Christmas, my poor G5 Dual 2.5 will boot and run for about 20 to 30 minutes then lock up hard. No keyboard and no mouse activity. Have re-set the PRAM, swapped out the video card, swapped out the memory, and replaced the logic board battery but no change. No errors on boot up. No kernal errors or panic. Doesn't matter what program I am in when the lock up occurs. Really need this machine and welcome any thoughts or help. Thanks.

Cant find Mac OS boot after win 8.1 update.

Hi there,
Ive had a look around the net for a possible solution but no luck so far.
I recently installed Win 8.1 on a partition. My Macbook pro is a model A1398.
I was trying to create a shared partition. From Mac OS I made the new shared partition ex-FAT. I went into Win 8.1 reformatted it (cant remember if I left it at ex-FAT). In the process of restarting Win 8.1 was nice enough to download some updates and restarted itself.
From then on it doesnt see the Mac OS boot any more. Doesnt even boot into Windows! It has start up errors. I tried the command + R option and I cant do the following either:
1. I cant seem to do anything useful (unless Im missing something) with Disk Utility. Diagnostics show that the Mac OS X install is fine.
2. Cant re-install because it cant see any boot disk options to select from.
Right now Im screwed. Cant do anything with my "fancy pants" macbook pro. Any help would me much appreciated!

Had to revert to wiping everything out and starting from scratch. Didnt have a back up so thats the only way. Set the partition to GUID and Mac OS journalled.
Command + Option + P + R and then set it all to just one partition. Then re-install mac OS.
If the above start up option didnt work, try the command R then try the above option again.
Hoe this helps someone.

My computer locked up after downloading the iTunes update

I downloaded the update from iTunes and now my computer is locked up.

Have you done a "hard reboot"? Press the power button and hold for 5-10 seconds till it shuts down and restart.
Worst case, unplug it. Let it set for 30 seconds, plug it back in and boot it up.

Factory unlocked iPhone 4 locked itself after 5.1.1 update?

I have an iPhone on the network 3, but am moving to tesco mobile. The phone is unlocked, and I have had other sims in it before. Since this update, only my 3 sim will work? Is on a new baseband too. 04.12.01
My phone has always worked before hand with other sim cards, so I can't get my head about what could be wrong.
When I put the sim in I get no service, and when I go into airplane mode and back out, it says sim failure. I know its not the sim itself, because it is a new sim and I have tested it in my HTC Wildfire.
I jumped from IOS 5.0.1 to 5.1.1 because I hadnt had time to update my phone in these last months (If that is of any relevence).
Would someone kindly explain whats wrong and how I can fix this?

Here in the UK, when you buy a brand new iPhone from the apple store, its factory unlocked. You can use any sim in it you want. I have used multipul sim cards from different carriers in the phone since I bought it. It works fine with my sim and I will try another and see if that works. I will report back when I have tried

Itunes for mac locks up after connecting device for sync

iTunes (11.2.2) locks up when I connect a device (iphone/ipad). I force quit the app and restarted to no avail. I have reinstalled the same version of iTunes, but the problem continues. Any ideas?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.

5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
