.Mac logon w/iChat

I have Bonjour as one option to use iChat. I also have a .mac account and would like to use that account also. However, when I attempt to log on/set up my .mac account within iChat, I am directed to the Mac webpage to sign up for a 60 day free trial. I already have an account! I've logged on to my .mac email account with no problem so I know my password is correct. Heck, I was able to get into here with it! What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

You HAvew opened up iChat ?
You have gone to Preferences > Accounts ?
Used the Plus sign at the bottom ?
Selected the @mac type account option ?

  • Using my .mac account on iChat AV (problems)

Hi, I've been using iChat AV with my .mac account since december, and it was all fine 'til some weeks ago.
From the end of may 2006 I have many problems using my .mac account in iChat AV.
Sometimes I can connect, but usually I can't connect! And the problem is the same on my iMac G5, on my old iBook G4 12" 1.33, and on my new MacBook 1.83...
When I try to enter with a AIM account it's fine and I connect!
But all my friends have my .mac account and I want to use it!
    Can anyone help me?
P.S. I tried to use programs like adiumX, but I still have the same connection problem using my .mac account! And I still pay for it!!!!

    Hi maurizio79,
Every now and then AIM sort out what they think are unused account names and make them available again.
Whilst they are doing this there are often problems with .mac names for some reason.
After the period that lots of people were having problems, there have been cases of invidual .mac users who have problems.
The solution is to speak to .mac and ask them to look into it.

  • I know my Apple Id (not .mac) and password but I can't logon to ichat.  I keep getting a message of password not matched.  Do I need to create a new account for Ichat?

I know my Apple Id (it isn't ".mac") and password but I can't log on to ichat.  I keep getting a message of password not matched.  I saw somewhere that my Apple id is the same as my ichat account.  Do I need to create a new account for Ichat?  I've already reset my Apple id password 3 times in the last 2 days.  What am I doing wrong?

    Hi,
At one time only Email IDs from Apple (when it was just @Mac.com) were referred to as "Apple IDs"
Other IDs such as to log in to Discussions were know as Discussion IDs
Things like the Online Store and iTunes and Apple realising that people would prefer one ID to have access to Everything tended to move things together.
There can be a variety of combos now
    iChat Name
    @mac.com before MobileMe
    @mac.com post MobileMe
    AIM Names
    AIM names current
    MobileMe (@Me.com)
    Style
Email Address valid with the .Mac service prior MobileMe Note 1
Email style Name Valid with AIM
May or may not be an Email address

    Valid Email with MobileMe Service
    Other Abilities
May also be Currently valid email linked to a MobileMe account
    Maybe Valid Apple ID
Is a Valid AIM Screen Name
May Not be a Valid Apple ID (was an option choice at one stage)
Is a Valid AIM Screen Name
May not look like an Email (No @whatever.com) but may be linked to either an AOL email account or AIM one
Current Registration seems to be pushing Email registration (@AIM.com)or asking to use another you currently use.
Trial Accounts are limited to the Trial Period Only as Emails, Valid AIM Screen Names and Apple IDs.

  • Cannot login to .me or .mac accounts on ichat

    Hi,
I am using OS X mountain lion 10.7.5. When I recently updated my software, it asked me to install ichat (which I did). My problem is that I cannot login to either .me or .mac accounts to see my contacts. I use the same username and password as the one I used to login in to apple's store and itunes. None of them work. How can I log in to these account to get my contact list? I should mention that I can login to icloud just fine as well as all other apple sites and services except ichat.

    Hi,
This thread is iChat and tagged with "iChat".
You mention you have Lion which would be iChat 6 and the Message Beta has run out now.
From there I surmised you were logging your AIM valid Apple IDs into the AIM servers.
Nothing has happened to any or all of your iMessages contacts (Unless you have deleted your Address Book)
However you do now need Mountain Lion to login to the iMessages servers (and the Messages app that does that bit for you).

  • After a recent mac update, my ichat, mail and preview applications have been disabled! How do i fix it?!

My new laptop has been asking for an update so i went on with it.. now i cant see my ichat, mail and preview icons on my dock. I looked for it and when i tried to open it, it says it's been diabled. What happened?! How can i get it back?! HELP please

    Hi,
This Users Tip was written to Enable the Reinstall of iChat.
AS it is the app itself rather than the support parts that is missing you should be able to do the "Easy Way" for that app.
    Insert the Install Disk.
Drag window large enough to see the Option Installs Folder
Open that and then Launch the Optional installs.mpkg.
Select iChat and select Continue to Install.
This will install iChat at the Install Disk Level.
As iChat gets up dated with certain OS Updates you will need to Download and run the Combo Version of the last OS Update you did.
    Download the .dmg.
    Expand and launch Installer.
Run it over the top of what you have.
The Users Tip also tells you how to use Pacifist to Open the Install Disk and select various bits.
Obviously this can be used for the other apps you are Missing.
These too, will need you to "Run the Combo" afterwards.

  • Mac Mini? Ichat? What Camera?

Recently I prchased a Mac Mini for my sister as I switched her over from using a windows machine. I currently have a MBP 2.33 17" with the built in isight. My question:
How do I doo ichat with my sister? isight has been discontinued.
I don't want to go install some 3rd party screwey program, when apple should have a solution for their mac mini customers. thing always work better when they are embedded in the OS/ part of the system. My sister isn't comupter savvy so I'd rather keep it simple.
Is it a probability that apple will release another stand alone web cam for their mac mini and mac pro customers that do not have built in web cams?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
    -RB

Ian, thanks for your ongoing help in this topic. Just as an aside, I recently acquired another (older iMac G5) and needed a web cam. Fortunately, I live in Japan and you can still purchase a new Apple iSight camera in some of the major retail shops here. I just bought one last night for ~$140 USD (much less than on eBay).
It may not be a viable option for many, but if users really have to have an iSight, they need to find somone heading this way and ask them to pick one up. If Apple has discontinued this product, not sure how long the retail inventory will last.

  • Can't use my .Mac account in iChat

Does anyone have the server address and port for .Mac? My computer thinks I am trying to connect to the AOL server.

    Hi,
Umm, now we enter the muddy waters of what is an Apple ID and where can it be used.
You can create an Apple ID for Logging in here at Discussions, iTunes, the On line Store and a few other places like the Developers areas.
In most cases this ends up being an Email address that you have.
You certainly have to list an Email for contact and for retrieval of Passwords and such.
Using the iChat "Get an iChat Account" option in iChat 4 when set to the @Mac.com setting (And the MobileMe and @Mac.com options in iChat 5) will take you to this page to register for an @mac.com name
At this point some history may help.
@mac.com names were the email names that Apple gave when people registered for the .Mac Service that preceded MobileMe.
At that time a Trial accounts worked in iChat forever, as did Lapsed accounts.
MobileMe does allow Trial accounts but the name as a valid iChat Screen Name stops working once the Trial is cancelled.
Apple Email addresses from @Mac.com or MobileMe (@Me.com) are automatically Apple IDs
They are also automatically Valid AIM Screen Names (iChat Names)
So. You Apple ID if based on an Email that does not come from Apple is not likely to be an Valid AIM screen Name.
Therefore in the screen in iChat > Preferences > Accounts > + Button at bottom of list, you cannot use the @mac.com option (Or the MobileMe option) and enter the Apple ID as the Name. (If that is what you meant by "create")
If you go on to select @mac.com or the MobileMe option and then hit the Button "Get an iChat Account" it will depend which version of iChat you are using as to where you get Linked to.
All options including the AIM one lead to the Apple @mac.com name registration if using iChat 4
In iChat 5 the AIM one leads to the AIM Registration one and both Apple ones lead to the @mac.com page.
    Stated another way.
Any Apple Email ID is also an Apple ID (iTunes, Stores, Discussions) AND An Valid AIM Screen name - Logging in then need the password to be 16 characters or Less.
Any Apple ID not based on an Apple Email is NOT an Valid AIM Screen Name.
    <hr>
    There's more.
Any @Mac.com name will work in iChat. If this was registered before the MobileMe service began AND the account was paid for - at the start of MobileMe you got a @me.com and for Email Purposes these could be linked and you could effectively still use the @mac.com ending one with the MobileMe service. (They are somewhat interchangeable in Mail)
On the iChat front though, this gives you TWO iChat Screen Names. (They are not Interchangeable here)
I hope all this lets you see where you are at.

  • .Mac account and iChat

.Mac account expiring. Will I lose my iChat account with the same name?

    Hi,
Generally speaking a @mac.com name if it is/was a trial still works in iChat even if a paid for account lapses (No matter when you got the trial account).
However MobileMe accounts do not work after the trail Period is stopped or the account lapses.
Since Mobileme allowed people to keep their @mac.com names and we are now only just coming up to the renewal time I don't have any info on whether @mac.com names that were used with MobileMe will keep their iChat functionality.
The current button on the Adding a new Screen Name that says "Get an iChat Account" does in fact link to a Apple Web page to get a @mac.com name for free.
This would suggest that @Mac.names will work after they lapse even if they were linked with a MobileMe account.

  • Cannot logon to iChat - ID or password is wrong (but it is not)

I am helping my nephew with this one:
    Lion OS X 7
iCloud ID and Apple ID is the same, but it is NOT a @me.com or mac.com name, it is [email protected]
Password has been reset and rechecked several times
NO problem logging direcktly into iCloud account under the OS X settings: iCloud with ID and password
I do not know if this is a AOL or AIM account, does it matter? Anyway I have tried both, with no luck:
    Wrong Id or password
I tried to log on directly to AOL and AIM on the web, same result.
If I try to create a new me.com/mac.com and enter the email address, I get the message "this email address is already assigned"
It seems like a lost case.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
iChat can log in to AIM (As well as various Jabber Server and in Lion also to Yahoo).
Apple made an Agreement back in the days of iChat 1 with AIM that the then Apple IDs of @mac.com would be recognised as Valid AIM Screen Names.
Since then MobileMe replaced @mac (or .Mac if you prefer) As the Service apple provided and MobileMe email IDs were also added to the Agreement.
With iCloud any Apple ID can be linked to an @me.com name.
Using the @me.com name works in iChat.
    NOTE.
There is one proviso with these "Names" in that the AIM Servers have never allowed more than 16 characters to a Password.
As the AIM servers actually check with the relevant @mac.com and @me.com servers for the password, your Password does need to be 16 characters or less.
Use iCloud to change your more recent Password.
Others may have to use the iForgot site.
Just to be clear ---- NOT  ---  all Apple IDs are also Valid AIM Screen Names.
This means at 2) above in your Post you should have ended up with an iCloud issued @me.com Address/Name as well.
These iCloud/iOS5 issued @me.com names will only work in iChat 6.
Alternatively you can create an "iChat Name" on the @mac.com registration site
This still needs the password to be 16 characters or Less.
It also requires that your Link another Email to the Name.  ++++ This Cannot be one that is already used with Another Apple ID ++++
So your Current Apple ID your "quote" is Not a Valid AIM name at 5)
As such you will not be able to Log it in via iChat, AIM for Mac or AIM Express or any other AIM client (App that can use AIM).
You can use any existing email to Create a AIM Name at this AIM Registration Page
This wants an email to be linked for Password recovery but it is not as "Hard Linked" as ther Apple ID/@mac.com registration.
    Hope that helps.

  • .mac account with ichat

Is it possible for me to have my .mac name appear to everyone else as just my .mac username?
    For instance
    .mac account = [email protected]
    what we want = johnsmith
    anyone?

    Hi Kagan,
Whatever screen name you use is what is displayed to the other person.
In iChat you can toggle between you screen name and the "Real Name" in the Adress Book Me Card which holds your info.
Your Buddies can, if using iChat add your Real Name or suitable moniker to their iChat Buddy list and therefore Address Book for their entry for you. Other IM clients can do this as well.
@mac names will diplay you as [email protected] which can be a problem if it is an live email address as well. (which is probably what you want to know)
Either get a new trial @mac account and create a name that gives less info and not add it to Mail or get an AIM name and do the same thing.

  • Using my .Mac account, but iChat wants AIM. What gives?

    Hello,
I think I might be confused about how iChat works. I have a dot-Mac account, and have that information entered correctly in the iChat preferences. However, when I start iChat, it asks me for AIM account information. Am I mising something here? Does iChat only work with AIM accounts? I thought iChat worked with dot-Mac accounts, too (especially since I have the option of dot-Mac iChat encryption). Do I need to have an AIM AND a dot-Mac account (this doesn't make sense, but I suppose you never know)? I have tried deleted the plist and restarting the computer, but no matter how many times I try to rebuild my iChat account, it keeps asking me for AIM account info. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Shannon
    Dual 1GHz G4 MDD, 14 G4 iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi Shannon,
iChat uses the AIM servers to login and start Text chatting.
When iChat started Apple decided to join the AIM network and arranged that @mac names would be usable on the AIM system.
There is one drawback. Apple allow passwords of over 20 characters and the AIM system only allows 16 as a Max.
Is your password too long ?
When you go through the Start up Screens the place where you enter the screen name should be a drop down to be able to select AIM or @mac types.
You just have to select the @mac option

    Let's try this:
If your friend has these ingredients:
    PIII 200Mhz or Greater
A minimum of 192 MB of RAM recommended
    20MB of free HD space
    800x600 (minimum) 1024x768 (preferred)
Windows 2000, Windows Vista or Windows XP (including XP 64 bit)
    Soundcard/Mic/Speakers required for Talk features
    Dial-Up, LAN or Broadband connection
Supported camera required for Video features
To view expressions and IM history, you need Flash installed
He needs to install the current AOL messenger, download it from the AOL/AIM site.
Ask him to download Quicktime 7.2 for windows.
Now you set your display settings to 1024 x 768 in the apple menu (screen icon) .
Set your streaming speed to match the lowest common value that you measure on a test site you find on Ralph's site
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/
Look for the speed test, go through the set-up instructions for modem/router required for video chat.
You go to the AOL/AIM site as well and get a new free AIM screen name.
Log into AIM and check if it works, confirm the email from AIM to verify the screen name.
In iChat preferences you go to accounts and you select "+" to add a new account. Just paste your new screen name in the AIM box don't add anything else. Make yourself available and ask HIM to invite you for a video chat by messaging him on the AIM contact list after you've added him. Check if he has a shadowed camera icon just like you have on top of the list next to your new screen name.
Please post if anything needs further explaining.

  • Three new Macs ... iChat video won't work over WAN

    Hi,
We just bought two iMacs and a MBP, all running Leopard. We can iChat when in the same house on the same wireless network, but when we go back to our homes, it doesn't work. Below is the error. We can use Skype video no problem. iChat text works works fine. We've reinstalled iChat, matched or unmatched the font, reduced the bandwidth in iChat, etc. We haven't altered the router settings. Hope someone has a suggestion. Thanks.

We do agree that there is a good possibility that the log that was posted is from a Bonjour (ie; local) iChat session.
The 192.168.1.x subnet is part of an address block assigned by the authorized addressing body as Private addresses. They should not be advertised on the public Internet and are NOT routeable across the public Internet. Also, when you mention other logs in these discussions, aren't most of the logs and/or discussions here of scenarios when something does not work ?? Can you refer to a known, good, working iChat video-chat log going across a WAN/Internet (not a local LAN or Bonjour) that shows both the To: and From: IP addresses as 192.168.x.x ? The bottom line is if the actual transmitted SIP:invite packet (not some possibly inaccurate Log message) has a 192.168.1.x address as the destination IP, I do not think it will work. Some of the Logs that iChat provides do some processing or filtering such that I am not sure that it is an actual packet capture/decode.
Again, I am certainly open to learning something, but my understanding is if the packet put onto the wire is destined to be routed across the Internet to another user behind a NAT router, a destination IP (or a To: address) of 192.168.1.x will not work.
    The process when going across the Internet , as I understand, is very simple;
    - login to OSCAR server on "typical" port 5190
    - after OSCAR authentication, login to BOS server, get Buddy List, "self info" such as publicly visible IP address, etc...
    - initiate Chat request to a Buddy (example userB)
    - send Chat request message to BOS server requesting Chat with userB, still on port 5190. Chat request includes data indicating the userA public IP address and public SIP signaling port number. UserA may have obtained this info via communication with the SNATMAP server, where it sends a message fom a private (ie; 192.168.x.x.) source IP address and private source port number to the SNATMAP server, which then sends back a message telling the userA what IP and Port were actually received...in other words, the publicly visible IP and port that the NAT router translated the private ones to. Typically the private ones would be 5060, 16384-16403..but others are possible.
    - BOS server relays Chat request to userB, including "rendez vous" data which has userA IP address and SIP signalling port number.
    - UserB may send back a message via the BOS server to the userA indicating its public IP and public SIP signaling port number as well.
    - One end can now initiate the SIP:invite message with the Destination IP and port# equal to the PUBLIC IP/port that was sent in the Chat request
    - The public port# should be open since the userA/B would have sent messages to the SNATMAP server so as the "open" the port on the NAT router.
    - The SIP:invite message will have an SDP section that will indicate which port numbers to use for Audio, Video, Audio Contol, ad Video Control. Again, these should be the "publicly" visible (ie; Internet side of the NAT router) ports as learned via SNATMAP (or other methods such as UPnP..). The internal values for these ports are typically 16384,16385,16386,16387 for Tiger and 16402 for Leopard. The publicly visible values depend on the specific NAT router and how it translates internal address/port numbers.
    - Once each end receives the SIP:invite and SIP:ok with the SDP session parameters, they will negotiate audio, video, etc..parameters..and if they agree, it should work.
The key n all of this is to get the correct SIP signaling port number, and then the correct SDP session attributes which include the A/V and A/V control (ie; RTP, RTCP) port numbers. And, finally these must be public, Internet routeable addresses in order to work across the Internet.

  • The army discriminates against Mac's and iChat

So my wife is in train up several states away before she heads overseas. She has an iBook and I have a Pbook and a Mac Pro.
She goes to connect to the net the other day so we can use our brand new (used) isight cams we paid 700 bucks for total (we bought 2 off ebay) and is told she has to have her computer "scanned" for illegal content. Everyone has to do this. So she leaves her computer behind a handful of other peoples and then half an hour later they bring it to her and tell her they don't have software to "scan" a mac. And they aren't ever going to because they would have to download something and they don't really feel like doing it.
So now we are praying when she gets to Kosovo this isn't going to be a problem. Even her superior officer has a mac with her too. So she's not the only one getting stuck internet-less.
Anyone have any experience with this? Do I need to go buy her a cheap P(ei)C(e of crap) so I can talk to my wife for the next year? Sorry for venting, I'm a little upset by this.

Have her Supervisor go to the IT dept and ask what the SW is that they need to be Downloaded if they dont know what it is for the Mac (my guess is this is that issue not that they dont want to). What are they scanning for Virus Spyware Adware or whatever then all you need to do is Find the application the will do what they need and Download it (burn it to a CD/ DVD) or Purchase it then mail your wife the discs with out all the boxing as it will get thru prosessing faster, She installs he software then youshould be up and running. The big issue is that there are no Virus, adware or spyware for the Mac so you truely dont need to scan for them
    Hope this helps
