Mac Loses Network Connection while Sleeping (Wake for Network Access ENABLED)

I have "Wake for Ethernet network access" enabled in my Energy Saver preferences. However, it appears that my Mac disconnects from the network entirely when it sleeps; therefore, this does not work when I am trying to connect while it's asleep.
I suspect this because it always takes a moment to connect to the network when I wake it up. Webpages don't load until about 30 seconds after the computer wakes up. I can't connect to my Mac over the Internet (with my port forwarding enabled) anymore, which is a big problem.

The article isn't very clear, but I've seen from a Google search "wake on LAN on Mac" that people think that the setting in Energy Saver enables simple wake on LAN as well. Maybe it does both. Wake on Demand has the advantages of advertising the sleeping Mac's services via Bonjour and responding to pings without waking up the sleeping Mac.
To be honest, I hardly know how Bonjour works, just that it's used to discover Apple devices on a network and that it gives each Mac an alternate hostname that you can use (for example, Bobs-Mac-Pro).. It seems like the Bonjour Sleep Proxy would only work if you're connecting via Bonjour to the Mac. If you connect directly by the IP address (192.168.1.12 for example), the router must send that straight to that Mac and not through a Bonjour Sleep Proxy (because how would it know to look for a BSP?). I tried connecting by address to my Mac from a computer on LAN while my Mac was asleep, and it woke up. It used to do that over the Internet, but now it doesn't, which is my problem. I was going to take it a step further and cut out any Bonjour Sleep Proxies totally by connecting the computers directly with ethernet, but that caused my Mac to refuse to sleep at all.

  • Mac loses WIFI Connection...

I just start experiencing this problem since I moved to a house with some DSL router but never experienced it when I was using my own NetGear router with a cable connection. My Mac loses its connection every once in a while and I have to turn off WIFI and select the router again. Since I am the only one having the problem people will say its my Mac, but I am not sure. Perhaps because I am living in a city with about 15 other WIFI networks around my be the problem as before I was living in a more isolated area with only a few WIFI networks.

Wifi problems seem to crop up a lot on here and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a 'one fix' solution.
However, sometimes any one of the following can help although, unfortunately, not always - in no particular order:
Check wifi security - if it's WEP change it to WPA or WPA2 (preferably, as it's more secure)
Change the wifi channel on the router
Create a new Network Location: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5289
    Reboot the router
Also take a look at this link and the links within the article for other ideas. They mainly reference Lion, but still seem to be relevant to Mountain Lion:

The panic was caused by the MAXPower device or its software, maybe with help from one or more of the other third-party system modifications you've installed.
First check the manufacturer's website for an update. If there is none, or if it doesn't help, I suggest you remove the device, back up all data, and then remove the software according to the manufacturer's instructions. Reboot and see whether there's an improvement. If there isn't, post another panic report.

  • T440s in Windows 7 Pro loses Wifi connection after sleep 7260AC

    Hi guys,
I keep having issues waking up from sleep with my T440s.  It WILL NOT connect to wifi and the wireless adapter under windows adapter settings disappears.  Only thing that fixes this is a reboot.  I have removed "allow windows to turn this device off" under wireless settings.
    Driver: 17.12.0.4
    Dated: 28/08/2014
    Software: Lenovo Access Connections
I do not use windows to connect to WIFI.  I have dedicated profiles for each of my wifi networks at home and work.
This is a serious productivity killer.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

This is a well-known issue with the AC card.  Go take a look at the Intel forum.
You don't necessarily have to reboot to get the card back.  Right click it in Device Manager and then disable/enable.  It will come back online.
Some tips that have worked for many:
-DO enable the power saving setting.  If I disable it on my T440p, the card is offline upon wakeup.
-Ditch ProSet and let Windows manage your wifi.  Profiles might be convenient, but...
-Ad Hoc QoS - WMM enabled.  Enable it on your router(s), too.
    -Ht Mode - VHT
-U-APSD support - this one can go either way.  Some leave it on and don't have an issue.  Some have to disable it to have the card work after sleep.  You have to play with it.
And, I really believe that the router/modem type can make a difference, too.  Some just don't work right with this card no matter what you tweak on the card.  With this card, I think an AC router/modem is the way to go.
Another thing is the driver itself.  I had wake issues when I first got this ThinkPad about 10 months ago.  Then, Intel released v 16.6 and that one fixed it.  I've tried all of the 17s released since and all of them caused sporadic failures to wake.  So, I have always rolled back to 16.6 and it always wakes.
Note this:  If you use Lenovo Update, it won't create a restore point in Windows so your "Roll Back Driver" button might be greyed out in DM.  Always manually create a restore point before you update a driver.  And, if it's working, whatever it is, leave it alone.  If the release notes don't address an issue you're having, skip it.
Driver updating is way oversold here and elsewhere.  If you're determined to update anyway, at least don't be an early adopter.  Let other peeps do it first and then come back here and see about the complaints!  Also, you can download the driver at Intel in their Administrators sets of drivers.  Bare drivers and no software overhead.
    Good luck.

  • Mac Pro with Dell UP2414Q Sleep Wake Issue

    Hi,
I have *two* Dell UP2414Q displays connected to a new Mac Pro, both using Display Port 1.2 (MST) setting in order to get 4K @ 60Hz.
Works fine. Except Google Chrome which is really lame at redrawing all these pixels when you scroll up/down.
The issue is: when the displays go to sleep for a longer period of time (actually it's probably when the Mac Pro itself has gone to sleep) and I wake the system up, the Dells sometimes won't wake up!
And if I start fiddling with the display buttons I will get a half image (left half of the screen). Same problem on each display except sometime it's the first one that doesn't wake up, sometimes it's the second one and sometimes it's both. Unfortunately the situation where they both wake up is extremely rare
Has anyone else had similar troubles?
Note: I have had similar sleep wake issues with just one UP2414Q connected.
    I'm running OS X 10.9.4 (of course).
I'm also having a 3rd smaller display connected though a DVI adapter. That one wakes up 100% of the time. I previously had 3 of these and they did always wake up all 3 without issues.
    -Francois.

I have this issue with the UP2414Q monitor and my new Mac Pro . . . . . and then some.
I started by losing the right half of the screen on wake up. After about two months of use, my monitor has developed a fault where both sides of the monitor are displayed but at seemingly very different calibrations. The left half is contrasty and the right half seems to be correctly matched to my working profile. This is using the display port connections. HDMI doesn't have this problem but it also won't run at 60Hz, which was an important factor in my choice of this monitor.
At this point I contacted both Apple and Dell. Although I have had quite a few different Apple support staff over a period of a week or so, they did keep good notes, were very patent and seemed to take a genuine interest into trouble shooting it. I cannot say the same for Dell. At first they did ask questions and did the right thing by sending a replacement. It worked fine on display port, then on HDMI but when I connected it back to display port the split screen problem occurred on the brand new replacement one too. After a day of fiddling with connections it went back to displaying correctly with all connections and has not reverted but it does now have the dead right halve on wakeup more frequently than before. I reconnected the original monitor but that has the split screen problem and I can't find a way of getting it to go away. It is unusable.
This incident with the replacement monitor was five days ago. In that time I have tried to contact Dell support by the original e-mail of the technician that initially helped and by phone, through the support number. The email gets the repeated response "Dear Sir/Madam, Thank you for your email. I have left for the day, hence my reply will be delay". It happens in the mooring or the afternoon. A phone call to Dell's support number always starts with a promise to be transferred to the technician dealing with my case and, without fail ends by me being left on hold indefinitely with a terrible one minute audio loop followed by a repeated promise of the next available agent. I once waited over 30 minutes, just to test it. I live in Australia but this was clearly an international call centre. Dell obviously have no intention of dealing with my case. They will have to talk soon though because I still have an extra one of their monitors.
Unless there is a firmware update for this monitor, I would strongly advise against buying one for a Mac, or any Dell product for that matter.

  • Mac won't connect to ftp server for iweb

my mac won't connect  to the ftp server. i have been
trying to publish a site on iweb

Well, do you actually have a web host server to be able to connect to in the first place.  You need this before you can publish a website from iWeb in that way.
Also, you don't publish a site on iWeb.  You use iWeb to design your website and then publish from iWeb to your web host/server.
What version of iWeb are you using?
More info generally would be useful.

  • MacBook Pro loses airport connection if left alone for a while

    Hi Everyone,
Everytime I walk away from my MBP, I come back only to find out that I no longer have any bars on my airport icon in the menu bar. I have tried moving airport to the top and unchecking the other options in the network preferences. This happens to me at home with an airport express, as well as here at work with a 3rd party wireless router. It's not a big deal, but it is somewhat of a tedious chore.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks,
    JV

This is a known issue with what we think is the airport firmware.
We hope Apple will be providing a software fix soon.

  • Keyboard and mouse not connecting while sleeping

iMac 21.5 inch late 2009 running OS Lion 10.7.2
My computer will go to sleep then when I go to use again the bluetooth keyboard, magic mouse and trackpad are not responding. As if they were not connecting. I checked all my settings and they are correct. The wake with bluetooth devices option is on. While the computer is sleeping I can press the power button and it will come out of sleep to my login prompt but I still can not type in my password or use any mouse. The only way to make it work again is a hard restart.

I have exactly same problem with iMac and Mac mini.
Problem was already with Snow Leopard and continues with Lion.
Have you tried to use usb mouse or keyboard?
I have, and even they don´t operate.
As well iPhone/iPad mobile mouse don't operate.
PRAM & SMC reset done, no help.
If trying to ping with another computer, you can't find that Mac in problem. Not via WLAN or ethernet.
Disconnecting eg. a usb hard disk shows a message on screen that disk was not disconnect propely... etc, showing that computer is alive.
Mac mini is used only for watching TV, there are no other sofware installed except the OS.
Edit: Different versions of VLC installed on both Mac for watching videos / TV
All system is updatet to latest version.
MacBook Air don't have this issue at all.

  • Mail not connecting while "sleeping"

I'm having an issue getting my MBP to continue checking for mail when it is "sleeping." In the "energy saver" prefernce panel, I have my 'computer sleep' setting set to 'never.' Display sleep is at 15 min.
Before Mavericks, when I left my MBP with Mail open, it would check for mail every 10 minutes as if I were in front of the machine even though the display was asleep, and apply sort the junk from my inbox. This was a really helpful because when I checked my mail on my phone (I have an IMAP account), the spam would already be sorted out.
After Mavericks, when I come back to my computer and switch to Mail, I can see it that it hasn't been checking for mail, and hence not sorting out junk mail. It will then start to connect again, but only while I'm actually using the comptuer.
I understand that if my machine was asleep, it shouldn't check, but shouldn't it continue to do so since I have sleep set to 'never?'
Is there some other new setting in Mavericks that I'm missing that will help me fix this behavior?

I have exactly same problem with iMac and Mac mini.

  • Internal/External displays blank when external connected while sleeping

When I connect my external display to my MBP (late 2011) while it's sleeping, the MBP awakens but both the internal & external display are blank.
The MBP is running ML and is connected to external display via DVI. No response to external Logitech keyboard or internal keyboard. Currently my only recourse is to ssh in from a co-located Vista machine & 'sudo reboot'.
If MBP has recently been used  (say < 5 min or so), everything's fine -- external display fires up & external KBD/Mouse work.
I'd be interested in any way to prevent this problem if I forget to open MBP for a moment before connecting Power/DVI/USB. Alternately, a command
I could issue via SSH to reinitialize display would be great.
    Thanks. Kent

Pleased ignore this thread - managed to double post somehow ....? Sorry

  • Mac mini drop connection while transferring data/files

    Hi guys,
I took my second step away from Windows and into Mac by buying the mac mini and gave it as a present to my mom! :-D I love that little thing almost as much as my iBook! First thing my dad said was "where is the rest of it!?" hehe!
Okay, now onto the issue that with the mini. From the very first moment, it is having massive troubles while transferring files from internet as well as my home network. Right in the middle of file transfer, the transfer (for no apparent reason) just stops. I can stil click and minimize it etc. but thats about it. Then Finder freezes and then I end up restarting the mini my hard-reset...Its quite painful to do that...
I can see there are lots of posts in regards to wireless issue of mini, but I couldn't locate the one that resembles mine. I can surf the internet fine, but the problem hits as soon as I try to download something directly. Any ideas? Suggestions?
Oh, Im running a wireless network. My main transfer of files is either from the internet (updating OS X and related files etc.) or to bring in files from my XP-based PC which is on LAN based ethernet. My mini is wifi of course. I don't seem to have any troubles downloading files to my iBook from the same XP PC, but mini isn't able to handle it. Yes, not even the automatic downloads from Apple...
I want to call Apple but they will just blame it on third party stuff! Sometimes I wonder why they are sitting there in the first place! I am not happy with their customer service. Though I love this forum!!!! Any help will be greatly appreciated :-D Thanks, in advance!

I've had a similar problem. I've noticed that when I turn off "Convert higher bit-rate songs to ..." that it seems to resolve it. Try that and see if it solves your problem.

  • Mac has partial connection while windows works 100%?

I recently cleaned out my MacBook and reinstalled the OS from scratch. I connected to a wireless account at a local coffee shop and ran all the updates and haven't installed anything else. The wireless worked great. When I went to a friend's house and tried to connect to her internet wirelessly, some sites wouldn't load (apple, google) but other sites worked flawlessly (digg, slashdot). I thought it might be a router problem, and attempted to connect to the cable modem directly using the Ethernet chord, then nothing loaded at all! We were having a study session at this friend's house and every PC worked with the internet and every Mac was only able to load only a few websites using wireless. Some of the people running Mac had Tiger, some had Leopard. It completely baffles me that this is possible. Any ideas what's going on?

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I thought it might be a router problem, and attempted to connect to the cable modem directly using the Ethernet chord, then nothing loaded at all!
Modems only communicate with the first thing thaey connect to after powering up, to use a Modem, you have to power it down for 5 minutes, power it up, wait 32 minutes, connect Mac.
    Any ideas what's going on?
Most likely, Macs & some Routers don't communicate DNS numbers correctly, on Tiger Macs, try putting these in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
On Leopard Macs, they're put in Network>Advanced>DNS

  • Can I use the Airport Express to connect to a Linksys Wireless Network and then use the Ethernet port on the Airport for a wired connection to a device for internet access?  Would I be able to then also use that Ethernet pt to a Ntwk Hub for more wired c

Thanks for the help.  Looked but not clear on what I am trying to do as being possible.  Can I use an Airport Express to connect wireless to a Linksys Wireless Router, such that I can then use the Ethernet ports on the Airport to either connected to a PC wired, or even use a hub off the Airport Express to allow multiple wired connections to it?
I am not looking to have the Airport Express extend my wireless network, just connect to it and provide me wired connections in a different location from where my Linksys Route is located.  Would prefer to replace Linksys with all Apple, but just not possible financially yet.  Thanks for the help.

If the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is an 802.11n model, then yes, you can reconfigure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge. In this configuration, the AX would join the wireless network provided by the Linksys router and its Ethernet port would be enabled for either a single wired device or for an Ethernet hub or switch for multiple devices.
