Mac magazines

I'm not sure if this is the correct discussion section to post this, but for lack of a better alternative:
I've been a PC guy for almost my whole life and I've not only learned a LOT from reading PC magazines, but I've had a lot of fun doing so and have enjoyed staying on top of the latest technologies and little-known OS tricks and tweaks. Now that I've got a Macbook to keep me occupied, I'd love to be able to get the same experience.
I've flipped through the pages of MacAddict a couple times in the past and found that it was pretty similar to MaximumPC- humerous and insightful, lots of useful reviews, OS tips, etc, which I really like. I've come to understand that MacAddict, however, is now Mac|Life, and that the magazine has shifted its focus from computer hardware and the Mac OS to iPhone, iPod and other Apple products. Is there any truth to this, or is it still my best bet for a year subscription? Any other good mags out there I should look into?

I think the British magazines iCreate and MacFormat are probably better than any other current English language Macintosh magazines for beginners and intermediate users. Loads of good to excellent tutorials to get you started with many standard and common applications.
Slight grump. In checking the address of the website for iCreate, I noticed they had an DVD version that includes their first 24 issues, some of which I don't have copies of. I think replying to your post just cost me twenty quid!

  • Fonts Mac / Magazine in PC

    Hi guys,
I dunno if anybody out there because Easter times. Anyhow, my question is that i brought a magazine from work which used PC Postscript 1 fonts. Everytime i open any of those pages it says "Missing Fonts". Question: Is there any way to change all the fonts for ALL files at once rather than doing file by file and font by font replacement? I know it sounds complicated or it maybe impossible, but maybe with Linotype FontXplorer and Smart Font Sets could be a way.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Sebastiao

    Hi guys,
Thanks for the good info! Let´s see...
1 - I am aware of the Find/Replace font, but if I have to do it in 20 different files with more than 15 fonts in each files it can be quite a tedious and boring task. I will like to find a way to relinks those files and fonts without doing it one by one. Maybe there is no way.
2 - I am just trying to open my magazine files made with InDesign CS1 with old postscript fonts for Windows at home with my Mac, and Indesign CS3. I would like the fonts to be the same not to change the design look. For example an Helvetica in Postscript Type 1 will look almost the same with an Helvetica Neue True Type or Open Type.
3 - I did not know that "Windows Type 1 fonts can be installed in the InDesign fonts folder". How I do that? just by drag and drop? Windows Type 1 have separate files for print and screen will that work? Should I divide the files among PFM and AFM?
    Thanks again,
    Sebastiao

I guess I don't really agree with that. There are still a few Mac magazines around. Interestingly, they are often magazines from the UK. I find it funny that there isn't a big enough market in the US to support homegrown Mac magazines, but they continue to print them in the UK with a much smaller market, and ship them over here. But I digress. I do think the points you cite for the demise of Mac magazines are all incorrect. The same system works just fine for any number of other magazines. The difference is the reader...
    Google is your friend.
Now I greatly disagree. Not only is Google not your friend, but it (or rather the internet - it gets hard to tell the two apart anymore) is turning into a massive source of disinformation. There was a time when programmers were expected to read the manual, read magazines, and try things out in order to figure out how to do something. Now, we are expected to just Google it.
Well, I do Google things on a regular basis and I find the advice dispensed to be wrong or otherwise useless more than half the time. Google is on the way out. Information networks are the wave of the future. That is why people come here. Apple Discussions is more reliable than Google.

  • How do I connect an Electric guitar to a Mac by Firewire?

Please forgive my lack of technical knowledge, I don't play guitar so the terminology is way beyond me. I am trying to find the best (and economical as in value for money) way to connect a guitar to an Intel Mac mini via Firewire port.
My daughter is getting an electric guitar for Christmas (Cort MGM-1) and a Roland Cube amp. She's been playing acoustic for five years already and is very good on guitar (now studying Grade 4). She will most likely want to record her guitar playing into software on the Mac, and I wondered what the experts here would recommend as being worth looking at.
Apple has a few pages given over to this here
    http://www.apple.com/pro/techniques/connectingguitar/
which mentions using analogue via the mic input, or digital using an "interface" but the problem I find is they only recommend USB connections, and these are pretty expensive anyway. Still, if that's the price, so be it. I would prefer to use Firewire over USB every time, if possible.
The Roland website says you can connect the guitar directly to the Mac with a cable from the amp, but threads I have read and help I have so far received on a Mac magazine forum indicate the need for a separate "audio interface" and others talk of needing a pre-amp. I am getting confused! Is the Roland amp not also a pre-amp.interface itself?
My budget is pretty low now too (actually it's been exceeded, but I'm aware of the "Buy cheap, buy twice" argument and want to think ahead. Her sister plays Flute and Clarinet and they both sing, if that is any help.
I know there are some really professional and top grade experts on this forum, and I would welcome your suggestions, recommendations and opinions. Please help me work out what to do!
    TIA

Thanks a lot to everyone for such a wide range of ideas. I've spent most of the day researchng them, and it is confusing. Now we have a number of options that also include software, eg ProTools or Cubase LE 4 or Ableton or some other program. That means even more research! And won't that double up what we are already doing with Garage Band or Logic? SOrry, I'm just a poor Sax player used to playing the dots, unamplified!
One big reason to go with Firewire (apart from its just better anyway) is the USB ports are pretty full on the Mac IIRC but the Firewire is totally unused.
As for plugging the cable straight in the back of the Mac into the Analog In port, that would only allow a single stereo input or two mono ones, and that could be limiting. I agree though that it would allow for something to be done pretty immediately.
I liked the Shure mic recommendation, I hadn't thought of that but it was extremely useful information which was great for you to add in. Very wise advice. Not sure if its a condensor mic or not, and not really sure why a condensor mic is supposed to be better. They are more expensive though but nothing in this world should be acquired because of price alone IMO; sometimes the minimum cost of something really useful is higher than just the minimum cost of purchase.
When I get one of these interfaces, where in the daisy chain should it be placed?
    Guitar - Amp - Interface - Mac
    OR
    Guitar - Interface - Mac
    OR
    Guitar - Interface - Amp - Mac
    or doesn't it matter?
If it is placed in the chain, should the amp effects be restricted to "Clean" leaving the interface or the software to do the effects, or can you change settings in as many places as wanted? I am guessing this is only a question when connecting to the Mac?
Sorry to ask so many questions, as you can see, I am getting hold of bits of ideas here and there, but there are still big gaps in my understanding. You've all brought me forwards a lot since this morning, I owe you all a great big thank you!
To sum up (please correct me where I am wrong or incomplete) what I am looking for then is an Analog to Digital converter with a Firewire (or USB perhaps) connection to the computer. These come in different flavours, often with "free" software, and can add effects in the computer just like some amps can. They all cost something like £100 to £200 upwards (same price as the amp really) and are in effect "amps for the computer" - or is that totally wrong?
As I said, I value your input and corrections.
    TIA

  • If I buy a Mac Book will I get a subscription to Mac Life with it?

If so for how long? If not where can I subscribe?

MacLife is not owned by APPLE. It doesn't come with MacBooks that I know of. You could check with the MacLife office and see if they give out a free subscription with proof of purchase with a new Mac. If I remember correctly I got a free trial subscription, with my MacBook, to one of the Mac magazines. I don't remember which one but it was not MacLife. You signed up for the complimentary subscription when you first registered the new Mac online. I do not know if anything like that is still being offered with new Macs. MacLife does offer a free trial issue but other than that I believe you will have to buy a subscription.

Are you able to turn in you old powerbook, for a discount on a new one?

    Hi Fred,
No you can't. What you can do though is sell the old PowerBook privately (eBay, Classified ads in Mac magazines etc) and then use that money towards the cost of a new one.

  • Should I run virus checks on CDs that come with magazines?

Hiya, I often buy Mac magazines, such as iCreate, MacFormat etc. and they all come with software CDs. It says to run a virus check on the CDs before using them.
Is this really necessary, as from what I know there are no mac viruses? If it is necessary, what kind of thing should I use?
    Thanks everyone.

  • Mac Pro Hard Shutdowns

    Hi,
    I have a simple question.
I recently have had problems with my Mac Pro and have performed dozens of shutdowns by pressing and holding the power button or pulling out the cable from the back. I know this is not the right thing to do, but there is no other way to turn it off.
Besides the issue I'm having, how exactly is the system affected when I do this? In other words, when I shutdown by pressing and holding the power button or pulling the cable from the back, is the Hard Drive affected? Memory? Logic Board? Graphics Card?
Can doing this damage all these pieces of hardware? Does it burn or affect any wiring or chips inside?
    Thanks in advance.

DW does excellent directory repairs but does not make clones. You would not want a clone of a problematic drive anyway as it will do exactly the same thing as your present drive.....it's an exact mirror copy.
When you are sure everything is kosher with the main drive, DW has done it's job and you test drove it for weeks, read on.....
I like the free demo of SuperDuper to make clones. It's free, Tiger and Leopard ready and is easy to use. If you buy the full version you can do incremental backups.
I then partition my external disk, in Disk Utility, with a partition that is the same size , actually a tad bigger, as my system disk. I then use SuperDuper to clone my system disk over to that partition.
With a clone on an external FireWire drive (USB drives are not bootable on Macs) you can bootup on it to do your repairs or just run your Mac anytime you have trouble with your main drive. Be careful, there are a few external FireWire drives out there that are not bootable on Macs. Check the drive's manual to be sure.
You can also do a clone on an internal drive, which I also do, but I like an external FW drive in case both drives get damaged somehow. I keep the external disconnected till I need it.
I bought OWC's FW hard drive encloser. You can put in your own drive(s) (I bought Seagate drives from OWC) depending on whether you want a single drive backup, dual or RAID. I bought the OWC Mercury Elite...great enclosure rated top in all my Mac magazines. What's nice about these is, if the drive goes bad you can replace it yourself and not have to get rid of the whole unit (like what happened to my Western Digital FW Ext. drive last time!). OWC's enclosures have Oxford chipsets which are totally Mac friendly. They also work for Windows machines. OWC also backs up their products...no arguing involved.

  • Re-install Mac OS system - How?

I've got viruses on my Macbook and now I really want to reformat the whole lappy. I also lost my password (admin password) so it's very annoying, I cannot delete some files, cannot install updates also.
When I tried to insert the CD to change my password, I found out that the optical drive is broken, it cannot read any disc.... How pathetic
Do you have any suggestion or how I could refortmat the whole system? I think I will go to Customer Care to ask them about optical drive...

    The_Drew,
Let's make the distinction of what a virus is, and what a trojan horse is.
A virus requires no user intervention from the time it is received on the computer to the time it impacts serious harm on the computer's file system and/or deletes unnecessary files. None. A trojan horse on the other hand requires user intervention such as implicite requesting of superuser passwords to create such havoc in the first place. Of all the reported malware for Mac OS X on the major Mac magazines ALL have been of the trojan horse variety, and NONE have appeared in the wild, i.e. they have only been created as proofs of concept, and proven to be scare tactics, as they required more user intervention than more than 99% of the user population knows how to do on their own. Thus any impact of such a trojan horse would have been minimal if any at all if it was released in the wild. It would require a serious amount of Social Engineering to convince a user to make that trojan horse take effect on the person's system.
Secondly, it is true if you are running a virtualization program that has access to the Mac file system that your windows side can delete files, and any viruses impacting the windows side could delete files if given that access. Similarly if you have Windows setup on your network and it has read/write access. But such a virus would have to be programmed to access the file system of the Mac side to do any damage to its file system. The BIOS settings on the Mac are not network accessible.
Thirdly, of course you have worry about being a Typhoid Mary.
Fourth, defragmentation is needed for certain large files, as
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1772235
    mentions.
Anyway, for all the reasons listed, I sincerely doubt the user has a virus that forces them to erase their system.

  • Power mac will not start

my brother just bought the new 27inch imac and was going to migrate from his power mac. his power mac is now dead. it will not start at all. any ideas

I decided to get a hard drive enclosure. I chose the Mercury Elite Pro...highly recommended in my Mac magazines.
The ones from OWC are easy to put drives in, even for a beginner. Easy to understand instructions and they back up their merchandise 100%, no questions asked. Now if a drive goes bad, I can put a new one in the enclosure in minutes (or put a bigger one in). Mine works great!
But make sure you get an enclosure that uses the PowerMac drive. Since you did not tell us what model he has we can not advise as to which one he needs.
Once the Migration is over, he can reformat the drive to GUID (for Intel) and use it as a backup drive....always needed! DALE

  • QT7.1 Intel Mac and .AVI problems

i Downloaded a .AVI file and cant watch it. i read in a mac magazine i need DviX to watch it with. i DL that and Divx Doctor 2.
the doctor converted the AVI in to some other format. now i can hear the sound. but all i get is a white screen in QT. i get a pop up saying i am missing some components and go online to get them. but Which components are missing?!
for future DLs shouldi stick to MPEG formats to save hasstle?
    anyone help?

No it didn't do the job. Not even close - so I'll open this one up again. It's hardly news that VideoLan is agnostic on these issues - all of us Mac people have defaulted to that player for years whenever QT has had compatibility problems - even with final public release codecs installed to enable QT to function.
Moving to another player platform is hardly a long-term solution for whatever Apple is attempting to integrate into the 7.1 - 7.1.1 series of their QT player. 7.1 was faulty; 7.1.1 doesn't sound anymore agreeable.

  • Suggestions for website hosting os 10.9.4?

I need help with: selecting website hosting providers and/or webmail/email hosting provider; suggestions?
    I have:
1 mac-mini late 2012, i7 quad core 2.33 Ghz, 16GB RAM (yes, had RAM upgraded at MAC store before bringing it home) 750 GB hard drive, OS Mavericks 10.9.4 as my Primary desktop computer, with HDTV as monitor via HDMI cable. USB wireless wave keyboard (MAC's smaller bluetooth keyboards aggravate Carpal Tunnel Syndrome,), MAC optical/super-drive (aren't they the same thing?) via USB.  I've run it appx 18 months without issue except the mail app (I know; join the club).
MacBook Pro 13" Retina display, late 2013, i5 Intel 2.6 Gz processor, 512 GB flash drive, 8 GB RAM (2 x 4 GB RAM chips/card/white-thingies-whatchacall'ems), OS Mavericks 10.9.4. It's slow, but otherwise fine for most uses. Same MAC/Apple bluetooth 'magic' mouse used for both, sometimes trackpad on notebook. I use native notebook keyboard and just rest hands frequently.
    iPhone 5s iOS 7.1.
My problem: I originally set up my 5 gmail accounts on MAC-mini and iPhone per support page instructions. Ran 'connection doctor' more times than I care to count, and always came up saying setup was correct. I was unaware of problems until some eBay customers and family mentioned that I hadn't written them in weeks and that I was not responding to their emails.I went to my accounts on gmail server with Safari (7.0.6) and there were more than 100 emails in each inbox that hadn't made it to my mail app, and several 'sent emails' in both trash and inbox, but not 'sent' folder (the circling about of gmail many have mentioned before me).
I have set up NO EMAIL ACCOUNTS on MacBook Pro, not wanting to subject it, nor me, to google-mess. (bought it because I will be laid up with surgery on my old dancers'  feet for a few months and cannot use stairs (4-story house)
What I have done so far:
Prior to owning the MacBook Pro, I bought and downloaded 3 different mail apps which purported to handle gmail. All three had the same cycling and connection issues. (mail pilot most recent, will amend post when I find names of the other 2), They and were cumbersome, didn't interact with calendar and notes as purported, etc.
Then set up account at "fastmail.fm" per recommendation of one of the online MAC magazines exactly as directed on fastmail.fm. It worked on iPhone, but not on Mac Mini. Deleted it, closed account.
I researched website hosting to begin the learning/building/set-up process; makes sense while I am laid up (MacBook Pro 13" Retina by now) AND TO HAVE EMAIL ON DESKTOP. Settled on GoDaddy which has just refunded everything I spent on the site, because after weeks of effort, and trial with various hosting levels and domains, NOTHING WORKED. Used Adobe CC Muse and Dreamweaver to build sites. Both said they had uploaded on MacBook Pro, (used FTP app from App Store and then Muse built-in uploader) but while the proper file sizes (on Go Daddy) were bigger, no websites were visible "Something Cool Coming Soon" persisted.
Webmail accounts I set up (cPanel) on native MacBook Pro app with 2 different Go Daddy domain names failed. They worked for about 2 hours then simply stopped sending and receiving at all.
Many calls and online chats with Go Daddy support were non-productive.
Additional info: Makes sense to have website which I can grow into e-commerce site as I learn. I sell custom and restored Harley-Davidson motorcycles online and Vintage OEM Harley parts. Ebay is okay, but limiting. Wish to use own site separate from/in addition to eBay eventually. When I learn enough ..... yes I'm at novice to website building and management, only used Apple products about 2 years. Yet after decades of fighting with Windows-based PC's and Androids, I'm no stranger to computing, the web, and computers in general.
What I want: Can someone please suggest SOMETHING that JUST WORKS??!!
NOTE: I live in rural area so HughesNet satellite internet connection is my ONLY option (slow compared to fiber optics, but fasted Hughes offers -- maybe VZW 4G/LTE could be tried, but I'm under contract with Hughes. Cisco Linksey 2500 Router. I don't know if this is relevant or not.

Can anyone please recommend a make or manufacture for me to consider. I have used Maxtor for years with pretty good results.
