Mac Mail and AOL

I have for years used MacMail to access my various e-mail accounts, currently four -- ATT, MSN. QWest and AOL -- first through my ATT ISP, then MSN's ISP and now a Qwest DSL line. Starting a couple of months ago, Connection Doctor keeps telling me I can no longer access AOL's SMTP server, i.e. I can receive AOL mail but can no longer send AOL mail using MacMail. All my other accounts work fine both sending and receiving and I can send AOL mail without any problem by logging on to AOL's internet web site. My ISP keeps telling me the problem is with AOL. AOL's "mail team" (in the Philippines, Pakistan or wherever???) sent me multiple suggestions, some simplistic such as check your user name and password, others to try various port numbers, none of which have worked. I have trashed and reinstalled Mac Mail, trashed and reconfigured all my e-mail accounts, tried all available ports, with or without SSL, and Mac Mail simply cannot connect to AOL's SMTP Server. My question is: has anyone else experienced this problem and is there any solution?

Hello:
I had a similar problem yesterday (which I attributed, apparently correctly, to my Mail provider - AOL).  In my case, I could not receive Mail, but could send.  I repetitively entered the correct password and could receive - even though the system indicated my inbound was off line.
I had to repetitively enter my password - both in the inbound and outbound areas.
The connection doctor gave varying results - sometimes a red dot, sometimes all OK.
The problem has disappeared, but I expect it to return sometime in the future.

  • Mac Mail and AOL IMAP

Recently it seems that my Mac mail program cannot connect to the AOL Imap server.  When I do the connectivity test in mail, the little ball is red.  Has anyone else noticed this?
Before you tell me to go ask AOL, I have already scoured the AOL help sites, and as of yet have not found an official AOL forum, which is why I am posting this here, as it is also a Mac related issue.

Please verify that you are adhering to these settings.
    AOL Imap (incoming)
AOL Mail IMAP server address: imap.aol.com
AOL Mail IMAP user name: Your AOL Mail screen name (the part before "@aol.com" in your AOL Mail address; if your AOL Mail address is [email protected], for instance, the screen name is "me")
AOL Mail IMAP password: Your AOL Mail password
    AOL Mail IMAP port: 993
AOL Mail IMAP TLS/SSL required: yes
    AOL Smtp (outgoing)
AOL Mail SMTP server address: smtp.aol.com
AOL Mail SMTP user name: Your AOL Mail screen name (what comes before "@aol.com" in your AOL Mail address; if your address is [email protected], for example, the corresponding screen name is "me")
AOL Mail SMTP password: Your AOL Mail password
    AOL Mail SMTP port: 587
AOL Mail SMTP TLS/SSL required: yes

  • Mac Mail and aol accounts

I have a friend running an IntelMini Mac who has just switch his adsl from aol to talktalk. (UK). His OS is 10.5.2.
I have spent two hours on it this morning trying to retrieve his aol emails from the AOL server but each time it requests a password which it says is incorrect. Logging into the AOL website and his email shows 141 messages unread but non will download into Mac Mail even though I believe it is set up correctly. Incoming is imap.aol.com and outgoing is smtp.aol.com. The username and password is correct (as used on the AOL web page) but nothing comes in. I've even tried his settings on my mac with the same effect. I'm baffled completely. The fact is his settings worked before the switch to talktalk and I'm now wondering if it could be a setting in his adsl router.

I've been having the same problems recently with AOL using 10.4.11 and Mail 2.1.3. It started about 2 weeks ago suddenly. I have been using Mail with AOL about a year now, without problems. I can retrieve my incoming mail, but have lots of trouble SENDing mail. At times, it rejects the password; at other times, it sits and spins, and then comes up with "can't send" message (takes 5 secs to as long as 2 minutes for this to happen); AND at other times, it goes through lickedy-split! I don't get it. I am using the correct settings (see above post by ali brown) as I always have. I think it is AOL.

  • How do I make Mac mail and iOS Mail sync to each other with a google apps (not traditional gmail) mail account?

I have a google apps mail account in the form [email protected] I have successfully set up both my mac (A1342) Mail and my iPhone (5c) mail so I get my account on both devices. However, when I read an email on my iphone, it remains unread on my mac (and vice versa). But if I read an email on either, the copy in my Gmail inbox on the web is correctly changed to read. How do I set up my mac Mail and iOS mail so they interact with eachother?
I am running OSX 10.9 and iOS 7.

Set the account (on the Mac) as an Imap account, it seems as though it is currently set as POP.

  • Conflict between program Mac mail and program Microsoft Outlook e-mail???

Denmark, Kolding, 30th of September 2010
A conflict between program Mac mail and program Microsoft Outlook e-mail?
For several months tried to discuss and resolve with several Apple specialists/support, but without much luck.
Therefore I have discussed these issues with 2 different and independent Mac users to find out in testing other Mac users will have the same problems as outlined in the below mentioned situations.
I will therefore outline the coverage issues, as mentioned, including occurs on my iMac 21.5 " with serial number: <Edited by Host> and 2 friends with their Macbooks of new dates as follows:
    1. Sending from my Mac plain mail as "plain text "(during formatting):
Plain text mail as "Plain Text "(during formatting) Verdana font size 10, sent and received on Windows PC with the correct letter size - but with the font changed to Century Gothic!!!
    2. Sending from my Mac plain mail "formatted text" (during formatting):
Eg. with my signature/signature-colored types and Verdana as font and size 10, possibly with underlining and italics in the text dispatched - the mail received as text with New Times Roman size 12 and signing /signature color Verdana now in size 13.5!!!!
    3. Sending plain mail "as normal text "(during formatting)
In the mail text underlined and made bold - the program asks whether to convert to RTF format (to keep underlining, bold, etc.) and Verdana as font and size 10, YES - this mail is received on the Windows PC as text with New Times Roman with the desired underlining and bold text and size 12!!!!
    4. Plain text mail as "formatted Text"
Eg. with signature / signature-colored types and Verdana as font and size 10, possibly with underlining and italics in the text sent - received as text with New Times Roman and signing / signature as colored Verdana now in size 13.5!!!
    5. Sending mail with file attached:
After producing a normal text document modified to PDF and directly from the Adobe Reader sent this PDF file in e-mail formatted as normal text with font Verdana 10 point, with signature. This is received on the Windows PC with a PDF file OK, but the font of the mail text is changed to Century Gothic and missing signature. Signature is available as an attachment on the Windows Outlook e-mail program as a ATT00113.text file. This can be opened and there is the missing signature!
    6. Sending e-mail with photos directly from iPhoto
iPhoto opens and click on the desired photos eg. 5 pcs. (Exactly as mentioned in the demo video!) and click on the e-mail icon at iPhoto and the program opens and e-mail that is opened with the attached photos and rich text is being used in the mail. Signature disappears and must be clicked on the mail by the sender.
The mail is received with the attached pictures OK - text changed to Times Roman with the desired bold - though no signature and 5 pcs. Att0028.html files attached. These can be opened and contains the file number each picture!
The above problems can be partly avoided by the following:
    1. Only send mails as plain text
Without any underlining, attachments, etc.. When the Windows PC Outlook receiver opens the mail where only the text fond is changed!!
    2. Sending mail with attached file
Start opening the mail program and use formatted plain text first and then attach (with the staple) file, and the Window receiver will get the file, but text and signature changed to Times New Roman size 13!!
    3. Sending mail with photos from iPhoto
Start by opening mail program text in Verdana 10 and click the Photo Browser and find (look for - takes its time!) the pictures you want to send and pull/drag them into the mail and send, - images, text and signature are in the mail on Windows PC - but with the font changed to Century Gothic!!!
If sent as formatted text with various underlining, italics, etc. together with the photos will be received OK - but the writing is now New Times Roman size 12 signatures Verdana now in size 13!!!
I must say – I am disappointed with the Mac mail program – it actually means that sending a perfect mail with underlining, colours, a.s.o. also photos directly from iPhoto – will received at a Windows computer in a totally mess.
Looking forward to some good news from either Mac supporter or some clever Mac users who can help me to adjust my Mac to avoid these problems IF POSSIBLE!!!!.
Apple/Mac is too good a product to make these problems!!
    Best regards
    Peter Larsen

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The PC sets the font on its side, the Mac does on its side for plain text. There is no "font size" in plain text coding. Rich Text gives you a bit more control, but only if both e-mail clients support it. HTML gives you a bit more control, but only if both e-mail clients support it. Use the asterisk, parenthesis, underscore, or any keyboard symbol that is part of the original ASCII. Otherwise, the chance is nobody else will be able to read it who does not have your e-mail client in the same version.
Sadly there are no e-mail standards except MIME for attachment, and even that isn't universally supported. E-mail is not the ideal medium for anything except plain text that is ASCII. To learn more about ASCII, see:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASCII
If you want to post a website that is universally understood, see the hints here:

  • Sending mail with attachment fails on MAC Mail and WRP400.

Sending mail with attachment fails on MAC Mail and WRP400.
We have hundreds of WRP400 connected with Mac (Machintosh) computers. No special configurations are applied (no virtual server or DMZ). Web navigation, P2P programs and sending mail without attachment work right.
The problem is the impossibility to send mails with medium or big size files attachment from MAC Mail.
If we use Windows PCs or a different linksys routers (eg. WRT54G) the problem not happens.
We have upgraded WRP400 firmware version from 1.00.06 to 2.00.05 but the result is the same. Sending mail with attachment using Mac fails.
We tried to configure WRP400 with DMZ to a particular MAC. We tried to configure Virtual server on tcp 25 port of a MAC. The result is always the same.
This is a WRP400 bug? Windows PCs work right. MAC and MAC mail works right with other linksys router.
    We need help. Thanks.

The problem was fixed since beta firmware 2.00.11.
I think that this issue was caused from a bug that decrease upload bitrate of WRP400 after some days of activity.
See more details on Cisco forum under title "WRP400 stops responding after browsing certain websites".
    Thanks.

  • Is there a way to increase the font size in the sidebar of Mac mail and the Finder when running OS 10.6.8?

Is there a way to increase the font size in the sidebar of Mac mail and the Finder when running OS 10.6.8?

The only way to increase the size of the onscreen text in the Finder Menu Bar and in the Side bar in Finder Windows is to change the screen resolution in the OS X Preferences Pane under the Displays icon.
What Mac and screen size are you using?

  • UAG problems with OSX - same problem with Mac Mail and Outlook 2011 (via EWS)

    Hi folks,
I'm trying to fix the last snagging issue I have with OSX clients in a UAG / Exchange 2010 deployment:
When trying to connect Mac Mail or Outlook 2011 the connections are very slow to start up, both at initial config and thereafter.
On connection I see lots of the same error re Session Cookies in UAG and no connection in the mail client. If I leave it for a few minutes, sometime many minutes, the errors stop and I eventually get a working connection.
    The error is:
"Sesson Attempted to Access Restricted Application"
User with source IP address x.x.x.x  tried to access application Exchange EWS that was restricted that was restricted for the session. This might indicate an intrusion attempt by misusing the session cookie.
Has anyone got any suggestions on how to fix this ?
    Many thanks
    Steve

Ruud, no, we didn't find a solution, or rather our solution (so far) is to tell users not to use Mac Mail and to use Outlook 2011 instead, which seems to work fine (after some Office updates!)...and we haven't upset anyone with that requirement
    (yet).
There are some very long discussions on Apple support forums about the whole Mavericks / Mac Mail / Exchange 2010 issues.
I do hope to have another go at this problem sometime soon, I'm sure there must be a solution (and my money says it relates our hardware load balancers).

  • Mac Mail and Outlook 2007

    Hi,
Perhaps this has been asked and answered already, but I browsed the forums and couldn't find the answer so my apologies if I missed it.
I recently purchased a PC with Windows 7. I opened up Outlook 2007 and configured my email by typing in my mac mail address and password. I figured that it would just duplicate my email in my mac mail. However, it took all my mac mail and moved it to outlook on my new PC.
I prefer mac mail as I have it sent directly to my iphone for convenience, but I don't mind using Outlook as well.
First of all: Is there a way to get all my mail back to my macbook?
Second: Is there a way I can have the best of both worlds and have Outlook 2007 and Mac Mail sync together?
Thank you for any help or direction on where I can find the answer to my questions.

I've tried everything and still not found a solution too.
I am unable to work remotely.

  • Mac Mail and Address Book Syncing

For some reason when I begin to type in the name of someone in Mac Mail who I know is in my  address book, the automatic search and suggestion does not happen.  I am physically having to go into the address book and copy and past the email address.  I have looked through the iCloud settings in both the address book and mac mail and it seems to be okay.  Any suggestions please.

  • Mac Mail and Hotmail problem

    Hello,
Sorry if this has been asked before but I have searched with no luck yet.
I recently set up Mail to retrieve mail from my hotmail accounts.
It worked fine for about 4 days then just stopped working. It will not connect to the hotmail server.
I have tried all the suggestions I have seen during my search but nothing works.
I deleted my accounts on Mac Mail and started again but now get the message that the server "pop3.live.com" is not responding during the setup.
Why would this work for a few days then without any changes from me just stop working? Why does the server not respond now but did four days ago when I initially set it up without any problems.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated
    Regards.

The same thing happened to me and probably to all other users of the httpmail plugin. I looked up on the Automagic Software website (creator of httpmail) and they mentioned that as of September 1st 2009, Microsoft has withdrawn support for HTTPmail protocol.
If someone else has got it to work, please post here. Thanks.

  • Mac Mail and hotmail sync

Hi, I'm using mac mail and have just added my hotmail account but when i check emails on mac mail i also have to check it on the hotmail site itself.

  • How to disable syncing between .Mac mail and Mail.app?

    Howdy everyone,
I'm trying to get my wife's 'new' (aka hand-me-down) 12" PowerBook set up the way she likes it. She uses .Mac Mail, and mostly uses the webmail portion, rather than the Mail.app. Anyway, she's presented me with a question that's stumped me - she wants it set up so that when she deletes a message from .Mac webmail, it stays in her Mail.app Inbox, and vice-versa. I guess you could say that she wants Mail.app to retrieve the messages from .Mac, but doesn't want their mailboxes synced.
Any ideas? I'd fiddled with the settings but can't make it work that way. I have a strong feeling that its right in front of me, but I just can't see it...
    Any help would be great!
    Thanks,
    Huxley

A .Mac type account with the Mail.app is really an IMAP type account and behaves in the same way.
Personal preference but FYI, webmail access is primarily designed when away from your computer and email client needing to access your email account when using a computer with internet access that is not your own.
For what your wife wants, she needs to access her .Mac account as a POP type account with the Mail.app. You can access a .Mac account as a .Mac, IMAP or POP type account with the Mail.app and as an IMAP or POP type account with other email clients.
This will require deleting and recreating the account in Mail selecting POP as the account type when the account is recreated.
All messages that remain on the server will not be affected by this but any messages sent by the account with the Mail.app that are not stored on the server will be deleted when deleting the account in Mail.
If there are any messages in the account's Sent mailbox that need to be saved, transfer all messages from the account's Sent mailbox to a user created "On My Mac" location mailbox before deleting and re-creating the account.
After re-creating the account in Mail as a POP type account, go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Advanced tab for the account preferences is a setting for removing messages from the server when downloaded. This should not be selected so no messages will be removed/deleted from the server when downloaded by Mail.
Deleting a message from the server via webmail access for the account will have no effect on messages already downloaded from the server by Mail.

  • Problems accessing mail on Mac Mail and Safari

I'm having problems with accessing my email account, both through Mac Mail and Safari.  The domain appears to be blocked.  I receive the following error message when I click on the alert icon beside my inbox in Mail:
    Unable to Connect
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “***” or try again.
The server returned the error: The server “email domain” cannot be contacted on port 993.
In Safari, I receive a message that it can't find the server when I try the URL.
Both methods of accessing email work on my laptop on the same internet connection, so it appears to be a problem unique to this machine.
    What should I do?
    Will

Double-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
    wmail.speakeasy.net
Launch the Network Utility application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Network Utility in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Select the Lookup tab and paste into the address field (command-V). Press return. Post the output that appears below – the text, please, not a screenshot.
    Step 2
Select the Ping tab and do the same. Please enter the same input as you did in Step 1. Don't use the output of Step 1 as input to Step 2.
    Important Note
Some web browsers and mail clients will automatically convert a domain name such as "www.example.com" to a clickable URL, such as http://www.example.com. That will interfere with the test. If necessary, edit the input in the Network Utility window to remove any added characters.
