Mac Mail and Gmail Messages

Hello,
I'm trying to setup my mac mail application to retrieve mail from my GMail account. I got it working, the only problem is that it is trying to retrieve ALL of my gmail. I must have over 4000 e-mails from the last 4 years. Is there any way to set it up so it only retrieves new e-mails?
Thanks!

I read some instructions on how to setup the POP email, and I seem to get the same result. I looked for the option to download only new mail and I couldnt find it, in the mailbox behaviors tab or advanced tab. This is leopard I am in, could it be different?

  • Mac mail and gmail are not syncing

I just bought my very first mac computer, the MacBook Pro. I set up my Mac Mail to my gmail account. My gmail account won't sync up to my macmail though. All the messages are there as well as my contacts and the mac mail receives new emails when I get them, however they are not synced up. For example, when I delete a message in mac mail, it doesn't delete on my gmail account and vice versa. How do I get it so the two are synced?

I just added Gmail to my Apple Mail and the only thing that I am trying to "fix" is that when I delete an email in Apple Mail, it shows up still in the Gmail inbox with the label "deleted messages" or without the label depending on what settings I use in Apple Mail.
How do I get these messages out of my inbox?
I am having same issue. This is a new development as I don't recall it doing this before. I was using the delete button in mail and this would archive the message (my desired behavior)...
not sure why there aren't moving out of gmail's inbox...is it possible Google is working on something behind the scenes?
Fixed this one issue (at least for my setup)...
It's a little misleading but it's the advanced imap settings in gmail's settings that was throwing me off...
    Under the the "expunge" settings
x Immediately expunge messages when I mark them deleted in IMAP
    Do not automatically expunge messages
Makes the "delete" button in Mail "archive" the message and move it to "All Mail"
Immediately expunge messages when I mark them deleted in IMAP
x Do not automatically expunge messages
Makes the "delete" button in Mail remove it from the folder in Mail, but not in Gmail, unless it's a message that is expunged from the last visible IMAP folder, then it goes by the second set of settings (archive, trash, delete immediately) that are only available if "do not automatically expunge messages" is chosen...

  • Mac Mail and Gmail Sync

Firstly, I'm posting this in the iCal section because there's not a dedicated Mail support section, and I think my question may be similar to some iCal concerns.
With the advent of 10.6, I know it's now possible to sync your "Contacts" contained within your Mac address book with Gmail. I also know that for some time it has been possible to import your Gmail contacts to Mac Mail.
My question considers the reverse - that is, it is possible to export your Mac Mail contacts to Gmail, and even better, possibly keep them synced. Often, Mail contacts and Address Book contacts are not one and the same. I'm specifically referring to the email addresses and names that Mail autocompletes when you type in the "To:" or "Cc:" fields. I only have 100 contacts in my address book; I know I have many more stored somewhere within Mail. As of now, however, I am unable to find them and unable to use them when using Gmail on the web. It would be great to be able to write an email to a new address in either Mail or Gmail, and be able to bring it up later from a different computer.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Kevin

It sounds like you've got Gmail set up in Mail on Leopard as a POP account. This would cause problems with how it synchronizes with other clients (like your iPhone) accessing the same mail account. The iPhone by default uses IMAP for Gmail access, which is what you should use if you are going to access Gmail with more than one client on a regular basis.
Once that is done, make sure you use the recommended settings for Apple Mail in order for your Gmail account to behave properly.
Lastly you should 'map' your folders so that Mail uses your Gmail folders for it's like folders. Using your Sent folder issue as an example, once you've set up Gmail to use IMAP you'll see a folder named [Gmail]/Sent. Click on that folder and go to the menu Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For > Sent. That folder will disappear from the folder pane and when you click on the Sent folder, the items in your Gmail Sent folder will now show up.
Edit: I just noticed that you say your MBP is using Snow Leopard. The settings should be exactly the same, but in the future you should post your questions about Snow Leopard (10.6) in the Snow Leopard forum.

  • After deleting several email from my phone, it will not update in Mac Mail and shows message: Messages could not be moved to the mailbox "Trash"

Using Outlook account associated with work. Deletes on iPhone, but not in Mac Mail.  I do not have Outlook for Mac.

Does the Outlook account allow you to store deleted mails on server?
Look under trash and see if "Store deleted messages on the server" is checked

  • Mac Mail and Gmail

Over the last 24 hours I have installed my Mac Mail. I have set it up using the instructions I found here on Macworld (http://www.macworld.com/article/157846/2011/03/mailgmail.html) and here in an article by Jason Hendricks (http://www.jasonhendriks.com/2011/05/using-gmail-with-apple-mail/).
So that I can sort my Gmail emails I have set up various Gmail labels (which appear as Mailboxes in Mail). However after initially loading all my Gmail emails which took almost all night, I have now started to sort through my emails and move them to the correct allocated Gmail label/mailboxes and this is taking hours. They seem to move to the mailbox and then I go back to the inbox and they are there all over again. I thought I would wait and give it some more time and I have kept my eye on the "activity" window and it has been full of activities for the last hour of checking fetching synchronising etc but still nothing seems to be moving and if it has it is taking wayyyy too long!
Is there anything I can do to make the move from inbox to allocated labels/mailboxs instant or atleast faster? I just dont understand if all the emails spent all night finally downloading and being fetched from my online Gmail account to my Mac Mail account why I cant move them instantly since they are on my computer. And why does it say they move but then move back to my inbox?
In the time I have found this forum and written this still more things are popping up in the Activity window and nothing is moving...
Any help is greatly appreciated thanks!

  • Broken Archive Behavior with Yosemite Mac Mail and Gmail?

    Hi -
It seems that with the Yosemite upgrade of Mail, the archive behavior with gmail (google apps) has broken. You can not change the Archive command to select the archive folder. The command just seems just to move the message from the Inbox to to the All Mail folder and no longer shows any messages in my folder called Archive. I have to go to gmail web to view these messages. This broke from Mavericks where I was able to archive to a mailbox called 'Archive'.
Is there anyway to change the behavior of Mail to select the archive folder and view the contents of my IMAP folder named 'Archive'?
    Thanks

    Hello VMH!
When either one of us deletes a message, it is automatically deleted from the other's Mail Inbox
That's exactly what IMAP is for: to sync mailboxes on different machines.
We would very much like to find a simple way to make sure whatever messages get downloaded into our Mail Inboxes stay there regardless of what the other person does.
As far as I know, that's not possible with IMAP. Besides, as I indicated above, it contradicts the idea behind IMAP. For info on IMAP and Gmail see this [Help Page|http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&ctx=mail&answer=75725] (click the link) and for info on deleting IMAP messages in Gmail see [this page|http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=78755] (again, click the link).
In your case I would recommend using POP instead of IMAP. But you have to make sure that the messages you download are kept on the server, so that your wife can access them, too. In the following I'll give some instructions on how to accomplish that.
*1) Switch from IMAP to POP in Gmail*
1.1 Log into your Gmail account via mail.google.com, click "Settings" in the upper right corner of the window and select "Forwarding and POP/IMAP". Make sure POP is enabled for "all mail".
1.2 Set the option "When messages are accessed with POP" via the drop-down menu to "Keep Google Mail's copy in the Inbox".
    1.3 Disable IMAP access.
*2) Create a new POP mail account in Apple Mail*
    *3) Adjust Apple Mail's settings*
In Apple Mail's Preferences > Accounts, select your new POP account and click on the "Advanced" tab. There you have to uncheck the checkbox next to "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message".
(You'll have to repeat steps 2) and 3) on your wife's computer as well.)
Hope that helps to get you started.
    Good computing.

  • Mac Mail and Gmail Filing Issue.

    Hi all,
My Mail is set up with Gmail. When I'm trying to file my emails using Mail, the email goes into the right 'label', but then it comes back into my inbox for a couple of seconds, then it disappears back into the label.
I guess it's not the end of the world, but I tend to file emails quickly as I go. And what happens is, I think the email is filed, and then click the next one, I start to reply and then I realise I'm replying to the wrong email because the one I filed jumped back to the top of the inbox.
So I've got this routine now where every time I file a mail, I have to sit and watch it jump into the label, jump back to my inbox, jump back to the label, and then I can continue working.
Over the course of a day, it gets frustrating.
Has anyone else experienced this / anyone know what could be causing it?
    Thanks, Laura
NB: Specs - Macbook Pro, Maverick OSX 10.9.2 - 4bg ram, 2.66 ghz intel core duo // Mail version 7.2
    email settings are:
    account type: Google IMAP
    incoming mail server: imap.gmail.com
    Outgoing mail server: Gmail

Acutally, clicking on some of the related issues on here (they only became visible after posting my question), I found this in one of the posts:
    http://tidbits.com/article/14219
This seems to answer the question. In other words, it doesn't work because Mavericks.
Doesn't seem to be a fix for this, whether you choose 'all mail' or not, you're going to have one set of problems or another. So I am guessing the answer is to be patient and hope that they fix this in the next OSX update/version.

I accidentally deleted all my husband's Mac mail and now it is also gone from his gmail account. How can I retrieve the deletd messages?

Did you also empty the trash can?   If you did not empty the trash, then likely mail moved the messages to the trash folder on GMAIL.

  • How do I make Mac mail and iOS Mail sync to each other with a google apps (not traditional gmail) mail account?

I have a google apps mail account in the form [email protected] I have successfully set up both my mac (A1342) Mail and my iPhone (5c) mail so I get my account on both devices. However, when I read an email on my iphone, it remains unread on my mac (and vice versa). But if I read an email on either, the copy in my Gmail inbox on the web is correctly changed to read. How do I set up my mac Mail and iOS mail so they interact with eachother?
I am running OSX 10.9 and iOS 7.

Set the account (on the Mac) as an Imap account, it seems as though it is currently set as POP.

  • How do I keep duplicate messages in Mail and Gmail?

For the past few years messages would appear in both my Mail and Gmail inboxes.  If I deleted a message in Gmail, the duplicate would REMAIN in Mail. Therefore, I could keep some messages in my gmail account that pertained to work and delete their duplicates in Mail (since I wouldn't need them at home). Likewise, I could keep some messages organized in my Mail folders and delete their counterparts in the Gmail account.
At some point I must've downloaded an update or something because the accounts are now totally synced.  If I delete a message in my Gmail inbox (or even move it to a Gmail folder), it vanishes from my Mail inbox.
I know this is how most people like these programs to work together, but is there a way to revert it back to the way it was?  I tried toggling off POP, then testing it (didn't work).  Then I toggled off IMAP (still didn't work).  Then I toggled both of them off (still didn't work).  My Mail account is listed as IMAP for what it's worth.

Try posting this in the 10.7 Mail forum. You'll get more help there.

  • Mac Mail deleted inbox messages from yahoo mail, how to get them back?

I recently started using the Mac Mail client with my yahoo-plus email account.
What Mac Mail did was delete ALL inbox messages from my yahoo account, after one week from importing them to Mac Mail.
The inbox messages can still be found in the Mac Mail inbox, but not in yahoo's inbox.
I was wondering if there is a way to retrieve these deleted messages back to my yahoo inbox.
Also, I was wondering about the sync feature on the Mac Mail and what will actually happen if I use it. Does it apply to mail messages, or to address book and calendar entries?
I would appreciate you help on this issue.

    dechamp wrote:

The Yahoo server did exactly what you Mail program told it to do.
Mail/Preferences/Account/Advanced - This setting is adjustable for each mail account.
I didn't know about this feature until it was too late. I have already unchecked it for future emails.
I was wondering if there is a way to retrieve these deleted messages back to my yahoo inbox.
Not Really, you could forward them to your account, after you've told your mail program not to delete the emails at all, but they will show up as being from you instead of the original sender. The originals at Yahoo have been dumped and probably purged. It would take an IT manager at Yahoo to manually replace the emails, not much chance of that.
I've already asked yahoo to "restore" my inbox to a day ago. That should help me with retrieving some of the messages back, I hope.
Also, I was wondering about the sync feature on the Mac Mail and what will actually happen if I use it. Does it apply to mail messages, or to address book and calendar entries?
The sync feature refers to IMAP email accounts like .Mac or .Me or an Imap gmail account. I didn't think Yahoo offered IMAP email accounts.
Apple's MobileMe membership will let you sync your Mail, AddressBook, Calender, personal website with iWeb, etc.
"MobileMe is a service that pushes new email, contacts, and calendar events over the air to all your devices. So your iPhone, Mac, and PC stay in perfect sync."
    http://www.apple.com/mobileme/
I wanted to use Mac Mail, see if I liked it or not, then decide to get a MobileMe account. However, this is still a side note, since my yahoo account is my main email client.
You seem to be very well informed, and I was wondering if I can ask you to clarify a point for me. Do you know how to archive the inbox in the Mac Mail?
And thank you for answering my queries.

  • IMAP setup for .Mac account and Gmail

I've been trying to use my .Mac account and Gmail with mixed results. I have been using Mac mail for some time and have my folder structure setup for personal and work. Now I want to add a work Gmail account and simply have a separate inbox for the Gmail account. I store messages from both accounts into the folders I have in the .Mac account.
Gmail caused all sort of issues using IMAP in this structure, basically creating another series of folders below the .Mac folder tree. The inbox structure was fine and I could stored Gmail messages into the .Mac folders. But there were duplicate copies of the messages in the Gmail IMAP structure. I wasn't sure if I should just delete the Gmail structure, but the duplicates were driving me crazy whenever I did a message search.
Now I've backed Gmail down to POP and I have all sort of sync problems between my laptop and desktop systems. On my laptop it shows no mail, but when I check Gmail. There is mail in my inbox.
Does anyone have an idea about how to use two IMAP accounts successfully in Apple Mail?

Okay. This has got to be a common issue. And I think I have it solved.
The secret is using an IMAP prefix of "IMAP" and then creatin labels of "IMAP/Foldername" on Gmail.
It's all generously explained on these links:
First setup IMAP on Google like this: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77663&topic=12814

  • Formatting for mail forwarded by Mac mail to Gmail

I normally use Gmail. When certain people who use OSX Mail forward emails to me, the formatting is 'all over the place', especially if a picture is concerned - the picture arrives embedded and full width, even if it was an attachment in the first place. Is there a preference setting somewhere in Mail that ensures attachments stay as attachments and the formatting is retained? Or is it an incompatability between OSX Mail and Gmail?
    Thanks

    "Mac OS X (10.4.1)"
First off, you should update your OS to 10.4.11, Mail and install all the updates pertaining to your computer through Software Update. More than likely you are using an outdated version of Mail.
The last version of Mail for Tiger is v2.1.3.

  • Mac Mail move IMAP message to Exchange Folder

SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME THERE IS AN ANSWER OUT THERE!!!!???
I have most of my email accounts set up in Mac Mail (Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, Exchange (office365 hosted)).
When I try to move any of my messages from the first 3 accounts (all IMAP) to the Exchange folder I get the error "can't move...message".
How the heck are people copying/moving IMAP messages to exchange folders in Mac Mail????????????

    No insight whatsoever?

  • Apple Mail and Gmail IMAP

With the iPhone coming to Verizon soon, I'd like to move back to Apple Mail from Gmail, but still want to keep Gmail as my source because my domain is setup with Google Apps but mostly because of the unparalleled spam filtering Gmail has. My problem is that even though I've configured Apple Mail exactly as Google recommends (shown below), I still have some issues.
From the Mail menu, click Preferences > *Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors*
    Drafts:
Store draft messages on the server > *do NOT check*
    Sent:
Store sent messages on the server > *do NOT check*
    Junk:
Store junk messages on the server > checked
Delete junk messages when > Never
    Trash:
Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox > *do NOT check*
Store deleted messages on the server > *do NOT check*
I want to have true IMAP functionality here, but I'm not getting it. Sent messages work fine...if I send a message, it shows up in Apple Mail in the Sent folder and when I go to Gmail it is also in the Sent folder. BUT...when I delete a message in Apple Mail it goes to the Gmail *All Mail* folder (in Apple Mail and Gmail) and never shows up in the Gmail Trash on either Apple Mail or Gmail...where it should. I've tried changing the settings under *Apple Mail > Trash* but that doesn't fix the problem.
I realize some of you might be inclined to say "It's Google problem...ask there" but I'm hoping a Gmail user here might have had this same issue before. Even as a dedicated Apple person for many years, I still can't give up Gmail and their spam filtering that Apple Mail can't come close to. Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks, Andy. I should have posted a closure statement on this thread as I finally figured everything out. The most frustrating thing is Google's own advice at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892# couldn't further from correct. After many hours of experimenting with settings, I finally came up with the correct ones. In fact, I'm in the process of writing an article about it since there is simply no definitive guidance on the web that I've been able to find in the time I've searched.
Your comments are on target...everything on the *Behaviors Tab* needs to be checked (excepts Notes) and the *Delete when* settings must be set to Never. But there are a few other things that must be done, including some changes on Gmail Settings before Mail and Gmail will be perfectly synchronous. I'll post the entire solution on this forum when I finish the graphics.
