Mac Mail application won't open since installing Leopard

Hi Folks,
This is my first post - I have usually been able to locate the help I need just by searching through the discussions, but haven't found anything on this issue (hope I didn't miss it). Since installing Leopard on my MacBook (2 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 80 GB HD) I cannot open the email app. (Mac Mail). The error message I get is: "+you cannot use the application "mail" with this version of Mac OS X+". Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

If you had the Mail Application stored in any other directory (folder) than the root Applications Folder, you will get this error message because Leopard installs a new Mail Application in the Applications folder.
Delete your old Mail Application from its current locations, and from the dock, and run the newly installed Mail Application in the Applications Folder and you should be fine.
This is also true for several other Applications that are installed new in Leopard. I don't know them all, but you will when you run them and get the same error message.
Good luck. Hope this fixes your problem.

  • Links in e-mails from Mac Mail Application won't open in a web browser

I use my Mac Mail application for all my e-mail accounts. I switched from Safari to Mozilla Firefox and now links I try to click on in my e-mails do not open in a mozilla browser as I they did when I had Safari as my main browser. I've tested Chrome and Safari and the links open when clicked using both of those browsers. However, I prefer Mozilla to both of those and would like to get this working as it is a convenience to have to copy and paste links every time.

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, proceed as follows:
    1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
    2. From the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that Console displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
    3. In the Finder, go to /Applications/ and try to open Mail by double-clicking on it. Look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that might be written there as a result. They may provide some clues.
In the meanwhile, try reinstalling the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update for PowerPC
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update for Intel
After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Mac Mail program won't open

    Hi:
My mail program won't open all of a sudden. When I click on the icon the colored pinwheel comes up and just keeps on spinning. Any advice on where to start?

David Gimeno gave this advice on another discussion, worked for me (thanks David!)
The junk filter database has become corrupt. Try this:
    1. Either shut down the Internet connection before opening Mail or take Mail offline immediately after opening it.
    2. Reset the junk filter database (Preferences > Junk Mail > Reset).
    3. Go online again. The problem should be fixed now.

  • Mail application won't open on MacBook Pro

My Apple mail won't open. Console says it's crashing due to a segmentation fault. This happened after installing a system update. Any Ideas?

Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:
Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.
    ====================
If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.
    =====================
If Mail is working correctly, eject the DVD.
If Mail is not working, boot up from the system DVD again but this time run Apple Hardware Test and report back any errors if any.

  • Internet Explorer won't open since installing Creative softw

I was asked to look at a friend's PC because she is having trouble since installing the software that came with her Creative Zen MP3 player.
Whenever we tried to open Internet Explorer, Microsoft Frontpage opened with a message about installing softwatre (Frontpage extensions?) though I don't think she has Frontpage on her PC.
I managed to get it back to normal by the use of a System Restore but then the fault reappeared after reloading the Creative software and we had then lost that System Restore point (should have saved a new one!).
I did see something with a GOOGLE search which seemed to indicate that others had this problem but could not get the full details as the message had disappeared.
I would be grateful for any suggestions on how to get Internet Explorer back.

    Internet Explorer is here.
       C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
What happens when you try to execute iexplore.exe from there?
If it doesn't appear to open, start Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc). On the Processes tab, sort them by name and see if iexplore.exe is listed.
If you've done Windows updates, you probably have v11.

  • Mail crashes/won't open after installing 10.5.7

After installing the 10.5.7 update my mail is crashing when opening?

    Hello G6:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
Permission repair probably will do nothing (it will not hurt, however).
The first thing I would do is download the combo OS X 10.5.7 updter and apply it.
If that does not help, rebuild the mailbox(s).
If that does not help, trash the preference file (com.apple.mail.plist) and restart.

  • Compressor 4.1.3 won't open since installing Yosemite 10.10.1

Compressor 4.1.3 crashes since installing Yosemite 10.10.1 on MB Pro Retina 15" (late 2011).

    Thanks for your suggestion Tom.
Before performing a clean install of Yosemite OS X 10.1.1, I decided to delete Compressor, Download it again from the App Store and reinstall.
That totally did the trick. It is not crashing on open anymore and is working perfectly once again.

  • IPhoto won't open since Snow Leopard upgrade

    Hi,
Since upgrading to snow leopard iPhoto won't open, it just crashes instantly. I ahve tried reinstalling with no luck.
    Can anybody help with this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan.

i just bought a new MBP 13'' 2.53 Ghz 4Gb Ram 250GB HD... i tried moving my iPhoto library from my powerbook g4 1.67 machine that was running 10.4.11 (via a Lacie external)
once i moved this and opened iPhoto (on my new MBp running 10.6.1 - SNOW LEOPARD) it instantly asks me to upgrade the library (saying that the old library needs upgrading for this version), so i click upgrade, and then 2 seconds later it says that the library is corrupt and damaged and i must install from a back up...
I deleted iPhoto then emptied trash after clearing up some space on the external, meaning i lost iPhoto applicaton - IDIOT I KNOW - so i download iPhoto 8.1 and the library upgrade and error / damaged library message appeared again...
I have now, (as i type this right now) re-installed snow leopard from the snow leopard disk that came in the MBP box (i have had it like 2 weeks, thats it, it shipped with leopard and i am having to install SNOW LEOPARD, for the 2nd time) to get iPhoto back)... will this give me iPhoto back, or do i have to re-install from the LEOPARD OS disks that were sent in the MBP box, the OS that it shipped with?
i am very annoyed that it seems that my iPhoto library from a 3.75year old machine cant be on my new machine unless i re-add each PBG4Tiger10.4.11 individual library folder thru the interface of iPhoto on my new machine... (if indeed it will ever open)...
    PLEASE HELP !

  • Sigh... Mail application won't open.

Any ideas of what to do? When I click the application (either on the dock or directly under applications), it 'blinks' twice and simply doesn't open....
Suggestion please. I'm getting frustrated with the recent problems with my Mac and iPod...

at this point then, i would set up a test user (clicking the plus sign in accounts in the system preferences, if you have never done that) and see if mail opens there. if it doesn't, then i would archive and install the operating system. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120. if you do this, make sure the box for preserving users is checked. you will have to reinstall third-party software and do updates so things will function normally. if mail opens in the other user, let me know and we'll continue troubleshooting your user. • Most of my applications won't open since I upgraded to Maverick

This afternoon I updated the software on my MacBook Pro to Maverick from Mountain Lion. I got a gray screen for about 20 minutes after the process was done, so I force restarted my computer by holding down the power button. Everything seemed fine when I turned it back on, but then I tried opening iMessage and it wasn't working. Neither is the notification center, Mail, Maps, Calendar, iBooks, or Pages. The App Store is working, but it says that I have 4 new updates yet it won't show me what I need to update. I have no idea what to do! This is what shows up whenever I open one of the applications I listed:
    Any suggestions please?

Dude, U shouldn't update! there are a lot of problems with this update...
For me, the installation went well, the laptop restarted and got stuck in a loop of restart because of a unknown problem. The screen froze on a gray apple logo with som text on it. I tried recovery mode and there were no options that could help the problem, so I closed it and it restarted to Mountain Lion again. Now I don't know what to do. I will not try again thought after what you wrote.

  • Mail application won't open, anymore. Please help.

A few days ago, I tried to open Mail and have all of a sudden encountered this error message:
"You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X.
You have Mail version 6.0 (1486/1498). It can't be used on Mac OS X Version 10.8.2 (Build 12C54)."
As far as I understand, Mail is not a standalone App and is downloaded with each revision of OS X, right? I checked for possible software updates, and can't find any.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

Had the same problem, I installed the following update and it fixed it for me:

  • Mail Application won't open despite software updates and restarts.  Can anyone help?

    Hi~
Having major problems with Mail today. Updated all of my software on my Macbook pro and then tried to open Mail which was not responding before the updates.  Now it wont even open despite having all software up to date and having tried restarting the computer over and over. When I go to open it it immediately says not responding when I open the Force Quit window.  Doesn't matter how long I leave it open.  When I try to restart, restart stops as Mail is not responding.  have to force quit and start over.  Can't access my emails.  Anyone have any ideas?  PS - I am not very tech savvy, so if you do have ideas, please be clear in how to execute.  Thanks in advance!

  • After transferring applications and documents to my new mac, the applications won't open?

I transferred pages, keynote and photoshop from my old white macbook to my new macbook pro through the use of a hardrive. At first the applications came up as question marks on the dock and clicking on them had no response. I then tried transferring them again and when i clicked on them it saying i need to check if it works with this version on OS X and that i may need to reinstall the application. Both computers have all updates downloaded and the newest software and it still doesn't work? My friends have the same macbooks and did the same thing to their new macbook pros and the applications work for them? What do i do?

All three of the apps that you name have auxiliary files installed when you install the application - is you just copied the application files only, they likely aren't going to work.
You really should just install the apps anew - redownload Pages and Numbers from the App Store and reinstall Photoshop from your PS disc or disk image. I doubt that the apps will even work if you simply copy the app file from one Mac to another.

  • Does anyone know why pages, numbers, iPhoto, keynote, etc won't open since installing lion?

It's iWork '09 which is the lastest version. iPhoto isn't working either but iMovie is, I'm so baffled and it's really frustrating. I've never had any problems at all with my mac. The crazy thing is, it's almost as though they are open but I can't see them? Is this possible? I thought it could have something to do with the multiple desktops that are available on Lion but I scrolled across and.... nothing.
I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

After doing some research I'm afraid that eventually you have to delete and reinstall iWork.
But I suggest, that you prior to such a drastic step check the following:
Have you installed the Lion upgrade to iWork 9.1?
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/25548/apple-iwork
Corrupted fonts also can cause this behavior, so check the fonts by opening font book, click left on user and then in the menu bar on file -> validate
That will show up any problematic font. If there are red warnings, delet the font.

Assuming you have these accounts set up in Mail, open preferences and under Accounts tab, edit the SMTP outgoing server list. Do you have a .mac address in the list? If so, delete it.
    Are you using iCloud?
For the troubled account, select the correct SMTP server for that account in the box and check the box to use only that server with that account.
