Mac mail can receive but can't send messages

mac mail, can receive messages, but can't send messages. The sent symbol just spins around, but does not send.

I am using Mail 7.3, on OS X 10.9.4 (i.e. latest as of Aug 2014).   I have 4 email accounts, all with their own SMTP servers.   All stopped sending email at the same time.
Taking the hint from your suggestion, I looked in Mail > Preferences > Accounts, and all the SMTP servers were shown as offline (this must be a Mac Mail bug).  All accounts appear to be Online under Mail > Mailbox (pulldown), and are also Online if one highlights the Inbox account, right click.
The trigger for the bug, in my case, was adding a new email account, and when Mail could not access it, it took everything offline.  Removing that account did not solve the problem.
After spending hours trying all sorts of alternatives, I found the way to solve the problem was to delete all the outgoing mail servers, and reenter the information (the same information).

  • Yet another can receive, but can't send mail problem.

I’m having trouble with Mail. I have reviewed the various posts by others who have a similar problem. I’ve tried their suggestions, but none have worked for me. I just bought a new G5 PowerMac. I have set the account preferences exactly like my PowerMac G4 and PowerBook G4, but I cannot send messages on any account. I can receive messages. When I try to forward a message by clicking the forward button, nothing happens - no new reply window appears. Likewise, when I compose new message and click the send button nothing happens. My setting are correct and the same as the other Macs noted above. Both of them will send and receive messages using the same DSL connection as the G5. I have two hard drives on my G5 both with OS 10.4.3 installed. I use the second drive to start up on when I have trouble with my main drive. I started on the other drive, which had no mail settings, and tried to set up my accounts. In this case I got a message stating that the mail server could not be accessed. I went ahead and set the accounts anyway, then made sure the settings were correct. This implies that there is something wrong with my new G5 or there is a bug with Mail using the G5 since I have no problems with the other Macs. I haven't time to contact the help line and hope someone knows how to fix this problem.

  • New Mac user-can receive but can't send BellSouth mail

I am hoping someone can help-I see that others have had this problem but I still cannot get my bellsouth email account to send! I can receive mail just fine-but when I try to send it goes to my outbox and then it times out. I have 2 gmail accounts and they work very well. But my bellsouth account is my main email and if I can't get it to work in mail I will be SO disappointed!!
I set up my bellsouth account-they are my isp so i see no conflict there. Spoke to customer support-we went through all the settings and confirmed that settings and ports were correct. On the outgoing mail server description, it says Bellsouth (offline). I know it has to be online to send. They gave up and suggested I call apple support. I did that-we tried many things from changing ports to deleting the account and starting over-on the phone for almost an hour and finally he said "sorry-it won't work." He said that sometimes he can get these to work and more often they don't. Very frustrating! I have gone through these forums for hours-can't find anything that works. Has anyone been able to resolve this problem? I have been a pc user for many years but loved my iphone so much I thought it would be great to switch to a mac. But now I am questioning my decision! Any help would be most appreciated.

I went in and set up the account from scratch again. I did not check the "use authentication" box so it is not required. After the account is setup, and I check the box that says "take the account online", I go to the accounts page. For the outgoing mail server, it says Bellsouth (the name I gave it) and then it says offline. I also have gone in and edited the server list-and it always goes back to offline.
Well-just tried to send again a message to myself...IT WORKED! How 'bout that! Still says offline-but if I go to the mailbox menu at the top, then go to online status-it says "take bellsouth offline". This must mean that I am actually online!!
I guess what worked was just to keep trying. I did not do anything different this time-I had tried it with and without authentication before. But I am happy to report that I am now sending mail. If anything changes, I will repost. To those that responded--Thank you so much for your help!!

  • Moved my IMac to new location -- can receive, but can't send mail out!!

Help, help!! You guys, I'm pretty doggone mac literate ... and I am completely frustrated over this. I took my beautiful iMac to my new office from my home. At home, mail sent and received beautifully on a wireless roadrunner network. At work, I am globbing on to the office's wireless network, which I am told, is sbc.global.net. I have put in the smtp for that for the outgoing messages, the darn thing will not send messages out no matter what smtp outgoing server I select. Interestingly, however, I AM able to send a message to myself -- from roadrunner to roadrunner. I called the roadrunner people, and their suggestions that I use the sbc.global.net as the outgoing server did not work. This problem is really messing up my business ... can you please help?? Many thanks.

Who provides your internet service at your new office? Check with them for outgoing mail service. Generally your best option is your ISP for outgoing service Road runner probably will not accept remote mail (only from people who are connected to their network)

  • E-Mail - Can receive but can't send.

I have set up a personal account on my iTouch (1st Gen) in which to receive and send my email from my home account. I can receive mail but I am unable to send mail. It tells me that the SMTP account cannot connect. I have checked all the setting and they seem to be correct. I set it up just like outlook 2003. I have sync my Touch several times, somewhere I read that the correct setting could be sync from outlook, but I have the same problem. I trying to look for a possible solution.

    Hi xwdpuzzler,
Who is your email account provided by?
Most Internet Service Providers will give a free email account but you can only send email from that account when connected to the Internet over their network.
This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1426 provides general tips that may resolve the issue.

  • Can receive but can't send in mail

    Howdy
Since I installed Snow Leopard I found that I can't send messages using Mail but I can receive them....
The weird thing is, after I press 'send' on a message it just seems to disappear...it doesn't appear in the sentbox or in the outbox. Also the outbox appears maybe five minutes after I send the email but then if I click on it there's nothing there, and then the outbox disappears again.
Oh and the message doesn't send
    Why is it doing this?

There have been a lot of Mail.app issues with mail vanishing in SL. You might want to poke around here to see if you can find a solution in some of the other threads.

  • Can receive but can't send e-mails

I receive e-mails with no problems but I cannot send e-mails. When I try and send I get the message 'Cannot send mail. The connection to the outgoing server smtp.xxxxxxx.co.uk failed'.
When I get home, and the iPhone picks up my router the message is then sent. I know my POP3 and SMTP settings are correct so does anyone have any thoughts?
    cheers

    Hi Truly,
You need to set your outgoing mail server to smtp.o2.co.uk on your iPhone (in Settings/Mail/Accounts), with Username: (+your O2 [email protected]+) and Password: (+your O2 password+). I don't know why this isn't outlined more clearly in the set up process, but there you are.
Of course, this assumes you are a UK user with a legimate O2 account. Hope it helps.

  • I can receive, but can't send.

Like the title suggests, I can receive emails but can't send them in Mail. I'm living in a university hall now and they have pretty strong firewall which makes me unable to use programmes like LimeWire, and stuff. I'm sure the firewall has something to do with the inability of sending emails. But they say sending emails should be perfectly fine. And since they only know Windows PC matters, I think I should ask you guys first before asking those university Windows PC folks.

Mail Help has some articles devoted to sending problems, e.g. “I can't send email” or “I can't send email because the connection to the server on port 25 timed out”. You may want to take a look at them in case there is something there that applies to you.
Something that usually works if you’re trying to use an outgoing (SMTP) server different from the one provided by your ISP (and in the case of .Mac in particular) is changing the outgoing server port to 587 instead of 25 in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Server Settings.

  • User can receive but unable to send

We have Data Sync 1.2.5 Build 250 on a Xen VM SLES 11 SP2, connected to GW 2012 SP2 and everything is running smoothly EXCEPT for one user.
They configured their GW email account on a Droid and on an IPad.
The Data Sync server shows both devices and that they have recently sync'd.
He is able to receive emails, but when he responds to them or creates a new email, neither one will send.
So, I added his account to my iPhone, (which is already configured with my account).
After adding him, I went into his account and replicated the same issue - receiving new emails but can not send any from my iPhone in his account.
I then went into my account and I was able to send and receive on the same iPhone.
This leads me to think that something is not right with his GroupWise account.
I did run an analyze/fix on his account and I resync'd his devices in Data Sync, but that didn't resolve the issue (I know - overstating the situation, that's why I'm here!)
I saw some suggestions about running an analyze/fix on the PO and then rebuild his account, but I wanted to get other suggestions if this doesn't work!
Would deleting him from the Data Sync server, then adding him back fix it?
    Other suggestions?
    Thanks! (Stan)

Have you checked the logs in /var/log/datasync to see if there are any
issues there? I would expect some evidence at that level.
Does a GWCheck/Contents of the user show any issues?

The 100% means that the only messages this system has sent have been
for this user. So clearly it is trying to sync and just hasn't caught
    up.

A thought is if this user has a problem or oversized message getting in
the way, hence both a GWCheck on this account, and to see how big the
big messages this user has are.
For checking that size of messages, either get a sorted search folder

  • Can receive but can't send yahoo.co.uk email

I have tried multiple steps to reconfigure my outgoing email set up for yahoo.co.uk. the server is smtp.mail.co.uk. correct password is entered and i have even specified port 587. unfortunately i am unable to send via this email server. this is from my wifes account. my yahoo email works on my account fine.
    any ideas

As far as I know, you can only send emails via a third party client (i.e Apple Mail, Thunderbird, Entourage, etc...) if you upgrade your account to Yahoo Mail Plus as we had the same problem a year or so ago.
Yahoo Plus is $11.00 per year - is it worth it? er...no. Trying to persuade my wife to go to Gmail, but alas the lady is not for turning...so, get your Visa card out and then pop in these settings into Mail:
Incoming Mail (POP3) Server: plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com (Use SSL, port: 995)
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com (Use SSL, port: 465, use authentication)
Account Name/Login Name: Your Yahoo! Mail ID (your email address without the "@yahoo.com")
Email Address: Your Yahoo! Mail address (e.g., [email protected])
    Password: Your Yahoo! Mail password
This, theoretically, should work. However, we are having some major issues with Yahoo Mail at the moment even though we are using Mail Plus - can recieve but cannot send...sometimes. Why? No idea.

  • Exchange 2013 - Can receive, but can't send.

Emails aren't sending locally either so I doubt it is the firewall.
Logs are in the event viewer and there are specific exchange sections.

I can receive emails from other domains and elsewhere however I can't send emails locally or over the internet.
Mail flow receiver and sender connectors seem to be configured correctly.
    Any ideas?
