Mac Mail constantly downloading messages (iCloud)

I recently did the mobileme to icloud swtich to keep my me.com email.
Since Snow Leopard doesn't have an iCloud option and the MobileMe account option no longer works, I had to switch to create a new IMAP account with all of iCloud's server info.
Ever since, the mac mail.app has been downloading messages practically non-stop.
Every few minutes it will download 5000+ messages and growl notifications will fill up my screen. My mail folder is currently at 20gb and growing. I know there isn't that much mail data on the server as I originally had my mobileme limit set much lower.
I tried deleting the account and creating a new one again, however it still happens.
Please Help!

Ever get an answer to this? I am having the same problem with my Gmail imap in Mac Mail 4.6.

  • Mac Mail Constantly Downloading thousands of messages from Gmail IMAP

    Hello,
I have seen similar problems posted, but no real solutions.  I use Google apps +(and regular gmail) and like to keep copies of my messages saved locally on my Macbook.  When I setup an IMAP account in Mac Mail ver 4.6, it downloads the messages fine, but then constantly keeps 'updating' and downloading more messages - the status indicates x number of messages out of 20,000+
This eats up my hard drive space very quickly!
    Any solutions?
    Much appreciated!

    My gmail says:

  • My Mac Mail constantly asks for our passwords before opening our accounts.  New iMac with OSX Maverick

My Mac Mail constantly asks for our passwords before opening our accounts.  New iMac with OS x Maverick.  We get messages such as " Mail can't connect.  Appears to be offline due to network problems." or "The connection to the server (null) in port ) timed out."  I have confirmed server connections OK with Cox Communication and our Cox Webmail accounts.

    Hi Bob13524,
Man, that definitely sounds frustrating! And it sounds like this issue is occurring with several accounts, so let’s see if we can troubleshoot this. The following resource provides some great information for troubleshooting Mail issues, including information on using the Connection Doctor:

  • When deleting a user created folder from On My Mac in Mac Mail the sent messages that are part of conversations that reside there are not deleted, only the received mail gets deleted.

When deleting a user created folder from On My Mac in Mac Mail the sent messages that are part of conversations that reside there are not deleted, only the received mail gets deleted. Any way for both the received and sent mail that resides there to be deleted?
I create a lot of project folders where i keep all my conversations regarding the project. Once the project is finished i would like to just delete the folder and get rid of all the emails associated with it but when i delete the folder i've noticed that only received messages are deleted. Now I am stuck trying to sort through my sent folder for messages that were returned there after the conversations was supposedly deleted.

Mail/Preferences/Viewing - un-check include related messages, delete the folder, then go back and reset yo include.

  • Cannot send message (from mac mail) using the server iCloud

My Mac Mail send stopped working during a large number of mail sends yesterday.Could that be an issue? If so, what to do?
Message further reads - The sender address [email protected] was rejected by the server smtp.mail.me.com.
I deleted the account and set it up again, but still can't get the mail out. Same messages
If I go on to iCloud, mail send is working fine.
Can anyone see anything wrong or suggest what to do?
I've deleted the user name below for the screenshot.
    Thanks in anticipation.

  • Mail not showing up in Mac mail, once downloaded to iphone

    Hi,
    Thanks as always…
I have 5 diff email accounts set up on my phone and mac. 2 of the accounts (the most important two) are playing up.
If I check email first on my iphone they don't show up later in Mac Mail. Surely if I don't delete them on the phone they should still show up?
Isn't that what Sync is all about?
PS: Don't use Mobile Me etc.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks…

    You're welcome.
So what is itunes doing when it syncs my mail? Just the settings? Is it even worth keeping the sync box checked in itunes then?
Account settings only, which is a one way transfer process only - from your computer to your iPhone. After account settings are successfully transferred from your computer to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process, there is no reason to keep this option selected for your iPhone sync preferences - unless you make a change to account settings on your computer that you want automatically transferred to your iPhone.
I suggest checking your account settings on your iPhone and use Never for removing messages from the server when downloaded for the account settings for each account. You can removed messages from the server in other ways. If you use the Mail.app on your Mac for accessing the accounts, you can removed messages from the server as needed with the Mail.app, or via webmail access for each account.

  • How do I prevent Mail from downloading messages from IMAP?

I just set up Mail to use two of my email accounts for a very limited purpose that requires IMAP. As soon as it got the Gmail one created, Mail started downloading all 3,700 Gmail messages in my folders AND ARCHIVE. The x button did not stop the process. I don't want mail on my laptop hard drive. I set Preferences to "get mail ... manually" on both accounts. When I restarted Mail, it started downloading the rest of the 3,700 plus new stuff in the other account. How do I prevent Mail from ever downloading unless I tell it to? Email replies preferred because I am not in the habit of looking at discussions I've never seen before and hope never to see again. --John

This is what syncing is all about. It sounds like you deleted some mail while logged in on your phone.  This deletes it from the server.  When your Mac synced up with the server, it deleted the mail it had previously downloaded so it would be in sync with what was on the server.  In the old days, assuming you really wanted that mail deleted, you would have had to manually delete it from every device.  Now it does it automatically for you. Similarly, mail you send from your phone will also appear in the sent mail folder on your Mac; you don't have to check all your devices to find that message you sent last month.
If you haven't already emptied the email trash, you should be able to get those messages back.

  • Mac Mail not downloading emails

Hello. My mac mail is not working. It appears to be an issue with the Exchange 2007 server. The only way I can access my emails is via Thunderbird (which stinks). Neither Mac Mail nor Outlook will download my emails.
Connection Doctor status: Mail was able to connect to the internet.
I see that this is a common problem for many other folks. Has this issue ever been solved? I have spent a considerable amount of time on forums, talking to Apple Support, and Google searching -- no luck finding a solution. Its very frustrating -- I am using Thunderbird to get me by for now. I have a new Mac, Lion 10.7.4.

  • Mac Mail move IMAP message to Exchange Folder

SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME THERE IS AN ANSWER OUT THERE!!!!???
I have most of my email accounts set up in Mac Mail (Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, Exchange (office365 hosted)).
When I try to move any of my messages from the first 3 accounts (all IMAP) to the Exchange folder I get the error "can't move...message".
How the heck are people copying/moving IMAP messages to exchange folders in Mac Mail????????????

    No insight whatsoever?

Using Outlook account associated with work. Deletes on iPhone, but not in Mac Mail.  I do not have Outlook for Mac.

Does the Outlook account allow you to store deleted mails on server?
Look under trash and see if "Store deleted messages on the server" is checked

  • Mac Mail & POP Error Message - Unable to receive, Able to send

I am in a bind -- our company (okay, me) had gotten fed up using Yahoo Small Business email (multiple problems with customer service, they deleted my email, their tech fixes take weeks, I could go on and on...), so we switched to Network Solutions, a company I've used personally and been pretty happy with. HOWEVER, we've switched over and a remote party who uses Mac Mail to access his email set up using the exact settings suggested by Network Solutions and is unable to receive email. He's able to send it (using Earthlink as the outgoing mail server), but he's unable to receive it, and it's becoming a BIG pain.
    He's running:
    Mac OS 10.4.6
    Mac Mail 2.0.7
    He receives the error message:
"The server error encountered was: The server "mail.latitude-entertainment.com" cannot be contacted on port 110."
He operates wirelessly using a home router for multiple computers and has Earthlink DSL.
One bizarre twist: He's even not able to access the webpage for webmail (http://mail.latitude-entertainment.com)
At first I thought it was a firewall issue, but he doesn't believe he has any firewall software installed.
Needless to say, I'm an admin here looking like a fool in front of the big wigs. Not a good position. Network Solutions runs me down their usual list of things to look for, but not looking at the computer, I'm running blind (and he's not in a position to contact tech support himself).
    Any help out there?
    Any help would be appreciated.
Laptop, not sure what type   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Mac Mail 2.0.7

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
Probably the number one thing check and/or experiement with, is the form of the Username entered in the Mail Preferences when setting up the account. Mail is very precise about whether the form is the portion of the email address in front of the "@domain", or the entire email address. The standard will be set by the server, of course, Mail will not take Username from any place, other than the Username entry box in the preference, and not from the email address entry box.
Have him try it each way. Do you access this server with Mail 2.0, or otherwise?

  • Mac Mail creates duplicate messages in GMAIL bin and various other locations...

This has been quite frustrating finding 20 copies or half written copies of my mail as mac mail saves it as a draft then moves it to the bin.
When i perform a search for something im greeted with 20 half written copies of an email?
Anyone know why this is happening?

I assume your Gmail account is set up as IMAP.
In Mail, go to Preferences, Accounts tab, select the Gmail account. In the right pane, select Mailbox Behaviors, and uncheck "Store draft messages on the server".
Draft(s) will the only be saved on your Mac and more "safely" deleted when the mail is sent. If stored on the server, a slow or shaky Internet connection can prevent from it happening.

  • Mac Mail deleted inbox messages from yahoo mail, how to get them back?

I recently started using the Mac Mail client with my yahoo-plus email account.
What Mac Mail did was delete ALL inbox messages from my yahoo account, after one week from importing them to Mac Mail.
The inbox messages can still be found in the Mac Mail inbox, but not in yahoo's inbox.
I was wondering if there is a way to retrieve these deleted messages back to my yahoo inbox.
Also, I was wondering about the sync feature on the Mac Mail and what will actually happen if I use it. Does it apply to mail messages, or to address book and calendar entries?
I would appreciate you help on this issue.

    dechamp wrote:

The Yahoo server did exactly what you Mail program told it to do.
Mail/Preferences/Account/Advanced - This setting is adjustable for each mail account.
I didn't know about this feature until it was too late. I have already unchecked it for future emails.
I was wondering if there is a way to retrieve these deleted messages back to my yahoo inbox.
Not Really, you could forward them to your account, after you've told your mail program not to delete the emails at all, but they will show up as being from you instead of the original sender. The originals at Yahoo have been dumped and probably purged. It would take an IT manager at Yahoo to manually replace the emails, not much chance of that.
I've already asked yahoo to "restore" my inbox to a day ago. That should help me with retrieving some of the messages back, I hope.
Also, I was wondering about the sync feature on the Mac Mail and what will actually happen if I use it. Does it apply to mail messages, or to address book and calendar entries?
The sync feature refers to IMAP email accounts like .Mac or .Me or an Imap gmail account. I didn't think Yahoo offered IMAP email accounts.
Apple's MobileMe membership will let you sync your Mail, AddressBook, Calender, personal website with iWeb, etc.
"MobileMe is a service that pushes new email, contacts, and calendar events over the air to all your devices. So your iPhone, Mac, and PC stay in perfect sync."
    http://www.apple.com/mobileme/
I wanted to use Mac Mail, see if I liked it or not, then decide to get a MobileMe account. However, this is still a side note, since my yahoo account is my main email client.
You seem to be very well informed, and I was wondering if I can ask you to clarify a point for me. Do you know how to archive the inbox in the Mac Mail?
And thank you for answering my queries.

  • Can i delete .mac account in mac mail now i have icloud set up?

I've just upgraded to icloud. now my mac mail has my .mac email and my icloud email. both are exactly the same.
Is it safe for me to delete the .mac account from my list of accounts (in preferences) in mac mail now, as icloud is listed as an account?
I would think i'm just getting everything twice, but nervous to delete the .mac one, incase that is what icloud is mimicking?
    thanks

My only conclusion is that .mac is mapped to the email server for iCloud.  I would say that you can remove the .mac account from your email app, since the iCloud account has all the old email.  Since this is an IMAP account, even deleting the iCloud account from the ipad won't hurt, since you can redefine it and all your email will still be available.  My only reason for suggesting the test, above, was to see how the old .mac account was handled (totally removed or just referencing the iCloud server).  I suspect the .mac account will eventually be totally removed.
