Mac Mail: Gmail IMAP Connectivity Error

Hi,
"The server returned the error: The server “imap.gmail.com” cannot be contacted on port 993"
I am having this error when connecting to my google gmail accounts via IMAP. It works on and off. Mostly the symptom occurs after waking up from sleep mode. It started with Maverciks, but got worse with latest 10.9.2 release. Quitting the Mac Mail and restarting it fixes it.
It is getting very annoyying as the frequency of this issue has gone up.
ramana.

I also have this problem with paid Google Apps service using Mail.app on 10.9.1.
The syncranisation is very slow, and during the sync process the mail application is not responsive and Inbox does not show any new mail that has come in.
Performing a packet capture ("netstat -na | grep .993" to find IP address of Gmail server connected), and then runnning "sudo tcpdump -w ~/Desktop/gmail host XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX" shows that in 20 minutes, total amount of data transferred to/from Gmail is only 1.6 Megabytes!
The "All Mail" folder is disabled for IMAP under Gmail settings. There is a lot of mail on Gmail (6GB), but Mail.app has already 11GB of data in the accounts ~/Library/Mail/V2/[email protected]@imap.gmail.com folder.
Mail.app -> Window -> Activity shows very slow "Adding Messages"
It looks like the users which have less than 2GB of mail, do not seem to be affected.

  • My Mac Mail consistently gets connection failure

I have 7 different emails for my business and when I check mail it goves connection error. THe only way to fix is to rsart the program.

This has been happening with one of my IMAP accounts. The account is on a server that I administrate, and for a day now I assumed there was something going on with postfix or IMAP on the server. But the odd thing is that the messages are completely gone from the server, they're not being moved to any of the cyrus folders under the account, and they're not showing up in any of the deleted message or trash folders.
I just deleted the account from the phone, and re-added it with the "remove deleted messages" option set to "never", but in my search for an explanation I've also run across people having issues with the iPhone deleting messages every day when set to never. Hopefully I can figure out what is going on here. Coming into the office in the morning and seeing that your entire inbox that was full of work the night before, is now empty, is quite un-nerving. Thankfully I have a POP3 backup running on this mail account.

  • BUG: Mail (GMAIL IMAP) no longer connects over ethernet, only wireless

I too was puzzled last night when I couldn't get my gmail account to go online. I did a lot of reading, and tried various things (to no avail), but ultimately decided it was just a configuration error, or combination of other programs running...or maybe even (as read in other posts) Google's servers. I found the server problem unlikely though, since I could also log in via the web interface.
Mysteriously, opening Mail on a separate MBP over either ethernet or wireless was 100% normal...as was the imap connection on my iPad via 3G or wireless...so what was causing my brand new MBAir to choke? Sleep on it, I said to myself.
Well here I am on day 2 of Mail refusing to connect. Connection doctor always shows 'green' next to connection status (Mail was able to connect to the internet), but red for both imap and smtp servers, with messages reading "Mail could not connect to this IMAP/SMTP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in Account preferences. Also verify the server supports SSL. If it does not, deselect the 'Use SSL' checkbox in the Advanced tab of Account preferences."
I've eliminated the server issue, because my MBP still opened Mail just fine while connected to my network here at home.
Then, just for fun, I decided to unplug my ethernet (which is attached via Apple's own USB Ethernet adapter), and turn on my wireless. Almost instantly, Mail popped to life on my MBAir, and started syncing with gmail/IMAP.
In the two months I have owned this MBAir, getting Mail to work over ethernet had never been a problem. My issues seemed to parallel the recent influx of problems reported with gmail & IMAP.
I still cannot get Mail to access gmail over the USB Ethernet Adapter. What gives, Apple? Anyone else experiencing these symptoms on these new MBAirs?
    Model Name: MacBook Air
    Boot ROM Version: MBA31.0061.B01
    SMC Version (system): 1.66f54

Turns out I was a victim of my own [tight] security. I had a SOCKS proxy enabled on my Ethernet for when I take this laptop on the road...I used it to connect securely to my server back home. Obviously at home my SOCKS proxy was not connecting from within my private network. As soon as I removed the SOCKS proxy, voilá! GMAIL IMAP works perfectly over the USB Ethernet adapter once again.
I hope this serves as a reminder to thoroughly check your network settings before driving yourself mad!
    Cheers!

  • Mac mail periodically stops connecting to imap server

I have mail set up on both my iPhone and MacBook Air.  Everything works great with mail on the iPhone.  However, periodically throughout the day, Mac Mail decides to stop connecting to the imap server.  Quitting Mac Mail and restarting it corrects the problem.  It continues working for awhile but then stops at what seems to be random times.  It's quite frustrating.
Any ideas how to correct the problem on the MacBook Air.

SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME THERE IS AN ANSWER OUT THERE!!!!???
I have most of my email accounts set up in Mac Mail (Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, Exchange (office365 hosted)).
When I try to move any of my messages from the first 3 accounts (all IMAP) to the Exchange folder I get the error "can't move...message".
How the heck are people copying/moving IMAP messages to exchange folders in Mac Mail????????????

    No insight whatsoever?

  • Yahoo Mail generates "A connection error occurred." within the Preferences panel

Since Yahoo Mail changed to IMAP I have been having SMTP connection problems with the outgoing server.  I have tried deleing the keychain entries, etc. but nothing worked.  I deleted the account from Mail and rebooted my MBP.  Now, when I try and add a Yahoo email account I quickly get the message "A connection error occurred."  without any indication of the error.  The only option is to manual add the account which creates the error "Unable to verity account or password".
    Any feedback would be appreciated.

Since first posting I contacted AppleCare.  AppleCare performed various troubleshooting steps (pinging the SMTP server on the specific ports, creating test accounts and finally restoring Mountain Lion) which lead me to believe the problem is with Yahoo.
I was using Yahoo Mail Plus since 2002 but have since cancelled.   I am using the Ad version and the problem remains.  As a paying subscriber the only support option is email.  There does not appear to be any urgency on Yahoo to prioritze the issue or communicate.

  • Mac mail doesn't connect to emails

    Hi everyone,
Ever since I updated to Mavericks, my emails don't connect to Mac Mail.
I tried deleting the email addresses/accounts and adding them back in but now it doesn't connect at all.
I have gmail and hotmail and am not sure what I should be setting my Incoming and outgoing servers as.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!!
    -Judy

It attempts to set the servers.  After a long period of waiting, it gives me the message that it has to be configured manually.
urm...ok so after deleting the accounts and attempting to add it back on, it doesn't initially "work".  I restarted my macbook and now it works.
macmail has reset the incoming and outgoing servers:
    gmail:
    hotmail:
but then I have another hotmail account and it shows:
I hope it continues to work.  My mailbox has been working on/off for the past week or so...
    Thanks!!

  • Apple Mail & Gmail IMAP: Any tips for success?

    Hello all.
Is anyone having a lot of success with using Apple Mail with Gmail IMAP? I've followed all the directions, and things work pretty well for a while ... but inevitably, after a few days, Mail seems to stop working entirely.
I can delete Gmail account on Mail and start over again ... but, if I have to keep doing that, what's the point?
The problems usually begin when I ask Apple Mail to open the Gmail All Mail folder. It starts opening the mail -- and never stops. I have to do a lot of force quitting.
What have other people been experiencing? What tips can people share? I'd like to get everything working properly.

I think GMail's IMAP support is just extremely slow. For now I'm still using POP on my computers and IMAP for phone access only. Hopefully it will speed up soon enough.
But the problems you're experiencing aren't unique to you. I'm not sure there's anything you can do, and I don't know that it's a Mac specific problem?

    Hello Linds,
    No need to redo everything.
Is your gMail POP or IMAP?
It's likely just a Port# or authentication method not really the Password.

  • After 10.5.6 Update - Mail & Gmail (imap) not syncing correctly

After updating to 10.5.6, Mail is not syncing with my Gmail (imap) accounts correctly. For example, I will receive an email and have notifications both in Mail and my iPhone. If I read the email from my iPhone, Mail will not show the email has been read or deleted unless I quit and reopen. Gmail does, however, show the email as read or deleted almost immediately. Manually syncing Mail with an account doesn't work. Only quitting and reopening Mail. Any suggestions?

That's a shame. Did you read earlier:
