Mac Mail gone wild

I currently have the spinning ball in mac mail and can only get out of it by force quit.  I was having problems and trashed the com.apple.Mail.plist ... that did not help but "put back" selection in trash and still did not help.  email accounts just have the continous spinning gear now...?
all of my "on my mac" folders are still showing but anytime i click on one nothing happens
unfortunatley did not have any of my emails backed up....
any help would be great
thanks

I'm assuming you've restarted your computer already (if not, please try that).
If you go into Mail, do you have the spinning beachball immediately? If not, you might try rebuilding a mailbox if you have an idea as to which one is causing the problem.
Otherwise, I'd try having Mail re-index messages (rebuild its database). To do so, see the following article: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11704

  • .Mac mail gone crazy

This morning I logged onto my .Mac email, logged in and it opened up but the entire format had changed (everything was moved to the left side "new mail", etc.) and the actual emails are appearing at the bottom of the page in an unusual format. I can't open any emails, preferences won't respond, delete, etc. won't do anything! Any ideas about what happened and how to fix this problems. I've tried numerous actions all morning, nothing works!

Since you said you "logged onto my .Mac email" I'm guessing (so correct me if I'm wrong) that you are logging in through the www.mac.com website to check your email.
Apple seems to have just changed the formatting of the webmail to more closely match the layout of Mail.app. As for the "unusual format" of the emails, I suspect that it may be due tot he fact that the emails are not loading images. If so, at the top of the email you should see a button that says "Load Images". If the button exists does everything look ok after you click it? If it does you can click Preferences, then select the Viewing tab. There should be an option that says "Automatically load images in HTML messages. Loading images from spam messages may increase the amount of spam you receive." If you put a check mark there the images will always load in new messages (it may not affect messages already received).
And if I'm completely out to lunch on all that, would you be able to upload a screenshot and post the link here, or describe exactly what it "unusual"?

  • Mac mail help - saved messages gone blank, lost data??

Entire email folders of mine seem to have lost all the content in them - all that remains is the heading detail on the individual emails.
It happens without much consistency -
Sometimes I will use the folder, move messages to it and they will be fine, as normal,
Then later on I will discover that ALL of the messages in this folder will seemingly have lost their data and gone blank.
It makes no difference whether viewing in the mac mail pane or opening the message up directly.
It wont happen to all folders or all subfolders
Is there a safe way of getting the messages back and preventing it happening any more?
I say 'safe' as reading through other similar threads years ago I saw suggestions about rebuilding mail boxes which others then mentioned that it completely wiped their entire mail boxes - the thought of that fills me with fear.
Im running an 2.8 Ghz i5 27" Desktop on Yosemite 10.10.1 - but it has been happening since Mountain Lion at least - Ive had this issue a few times but it seemed to be very limited and isolated, but in the last 6 months Ive noticed it happening to entire folders and I cannot let my records just evaporate like this!
(I run my home-office with it and cannot lose these records and correspondence)
Thanks in advance, distressed and frustrated.

  • Migration Assistant ruined my life, now my dot mac mail is gone :(

I added a second user name on my brand new intel mac yesterday, it had only been in my house two days.
I transfered information from a firewire backup, it was an exact match for a used name for my broken power imac running tiger.
It transfered all the mail setting and programs, I though everything was fine. Then I went to my original user name and did get mail. After taking the dog out, I came back to find four or more copies of every email that was in my in box, somehow the synch had made multiple copies.
I started to delete the extras, leaving one copy of each email.
Then all **** broke lose, all the emails were gone, from my other two older macs to. It had synched all of them, and I had the trash set to delete.
Now all my macs and user names have the same damaged list on the incoming mail section.
I tried the chat at me.com and they said someone would get back to me.
Does anyone know if dot mac, me mac saves mail on a server someplace? and will they get it back for me?

    HI,
If you can, from the Mac Mail Menu Bar click Mailbox/Rebuild. This can take several minutes. See if that helps.
Also, you may need to trash the Mac Mail preference file.
Go to the Mac Mail Menu Bar, click Mail/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Mac Mail.
Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.mail.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Mac Mail. If Mail behaves, move that .plist file to the Trash.
The tilde "~" character represents your home folder.

I accidentally deleted all my husband's Mac mail and now it is also gone from his gmail account. How can I retrieve the deletd messages?

Did you also empty the trash can?   If you did not empty the trash, then likely mail moved the messages to the trash folder on GMAIL.

  • Help, I set up AOL on my Mac Mail Application, now the mail is gone on AOL.

Howdy there fellow Mac supporters I was lucky enough to get some help setting up an IMAP account on my i-macs Mail Application today from this forum's wisdom and it worked fine.
Now, come to find out, all the mail is now on my i-mac but is no longer on AOL. Can I return it to it's AOL home? Can't the INBOUND mail reside in both places? They do with my .mac account.
Please help, this is more for my wife that uses another mac in the house and doesn't have the mail application set up on that computer, she uses AOL, go figure....

    Hey Ernie,
I am sorry about the delay. Not only did I have to rush to Eagle Rock and pick up one of LA's premier pizza's for my family but I wanted to give your suggestion some thought time.
I changed the set up in Preferences->imap.cs.com and it didn't make any noticable difference so I left it changed.
What I did do, is go to AOL and check the 'Old' email and selected it as KEEP AS NEW...what happened is all the old/saved mail was returned to the AOL 'inbox' and turned from read mail on the imail application to new mail, hence returned from the dead.
Thanks for the time and effort in getting me a response and giving me some direction. Your a great asset to us floundering mac lovers that get lost or confused along the way.
Have a great weekend. I hope we 'meet' again because you are a great mac genius to know.
    Regards.

  • All of .Mac Mail is gone, BUT I have a 24hr old Backup, need help!

I've been reading here for the past few hours about Mail disappearing and whatnot.
This is my .Mac Mail that just vanished, the inbox is empty, although the sent items is still all there.
I make daily backups of the hard drive using Super Duper. One backup is just a Carbon Copy of the Drive, and the other is a compounded backup, so only new files are added, no files deleted.
I found roughly 340 *.emlx files on my daily backup drive. They are in:
    User/Library/Mail/Mac-username/INBOX.imapbox/Messages.
How do I get those files into my Mail Application so that I can have all of my Mail back....?
I am currently scanning using FileSalvage which has found my lost email files. But I don't see the point of paying for the software knowing that I have the actual files.
    Please help, Thank you!!!

This starts along the same lines as Ernie's suggestion.
    1) in Mail, create a folder: I called mine .Mac Mail Backup
    2) quit Mail.
    3) Stay offline, turn-off airport, unplug ethernet depending on your connection type.
    4) copy all of the .emlx files to your inbox
    5) delete the Envelope.Index file
    6) Open Mail, it will rebuild.
    7) Now all of your email should be in your Inbox folder.
    8) Move them all to the folder you created.
    9) go online to your .Mac, let mail go online too, it will compare its index versus .Mac and wipe everything in your inbox, that's ok.
    10) in .Mac Mail page, create a folder called Transfer, or Rubby Ducky, anything you want.
    11) this folder should now appear in Mail. if it doesn't just restart the application.
    12) Drag your Backup Mail into your Transfer folder. It will upload to .Mac.
    13) in .Mac mail, you can then transfer all your mail from Transfer to Inbox and you are done. Mail will sync again and all your messages will reappear as they were before.
Hope this helps, and sorry for having so many steps, this is what i ended up doing until 4 am last night.
    Good Luck!
p.s. for daily backups I am using Super Duper! It's after this incident, it has paid for itself.

  • Windows Mail Folders gone in Mac Mail after using migration assistant

I purchased a MacBook Air for my husband and used Migration assistant to transfer all of his files from his PC running Vista. It looked like everything was fine, but when I opened Mac mail, the only messages that were in there was what was in his inbox, junk and trash. Where are all of the folders from Windows Mail he had created? Please help!

  • Rules for exchange folders in mac mail are gone at regular intervals

I have some problems with mac mail and my exchange account.
At regular intervals my mail doesn't show my mails in my mail folders. Than I have to restart mail and those mails are back again. But then I have to set destination folders for each rule and for each shortcut in mail again.

Why would I go to the Microsoft Community when I'm asking specifically for an answer to how much is left to download in my mail account in the Mac Mail App Officially from Apple?
To speed things up, where's the "Items downloading, items remaining, and total items in Mailbox" for iCloud Accounts in Apple's Offical Mail Mac App?

  • Cannot send mail from mac mail or Entourage

    Hi guys,
Wondered if anyone out there can shed some light on this little problem.
I use Entourage for my emails & all was working fine until yesterday. I can receive mail from all and sundry but I can't send anything. I subscribe to ntlworld internet service and if log onto my email through their webmail, then it's fine. I've tried sending mail from mac mail and I get the same problem. I've been onto microsoft support & gone through all the troubleshooting with Entourage. The Entourage techy suggested it was my internet provider blocking my emails as they think I'm a spammer?? I phoned ntl & they insist it's nothing to do with them as I can send/receive from the website. (If I send an email with the address @ntlworld it's fine, but any other address i.e. all my clients/mates etc just stays in my outbox.
Nothing on any of my settings has changed so I'm at a loss what to do next.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Mel

it may be that your server (internet provider) has just started blocking outgoing mails not authenticated by them.
Go to your account set up...
and fill in the following details.
    SMTP SERVER: smtp.mac.com
then click on advanced sending otions...
click on override default SMTP port... type 587
click on SMTP servber requires authentication...
use same setting as receiving mail server.
    try this...

  • Mac Mail.app V.2.0.5 with OSX server's email don't play well sometimes

I have my own web, FTP, and email server. (OSX 10.4.4 Server). I've been managing my own server services since AppleShare V.6 .So I've done this a few times. I have set up an account for myself "nino" on the server that people email to, you know "[email protected]".
On my laptop I have Mac Mail.app set to log onto my server, via the internet, and to get and send emails. Sounds pretty normal right? Yep, it is except four or five times since I updated the server to 10.4.4., last December, Mac Mail.app simply stops receiving email from my account. Now I'm a pretty busy guy and email is my main source of communications. Plus get a healthy amount of junk mail. So I hear that familiar beep at least twice an hour - usually a lot more. I can always when this tell when this anomaly happens when two hours go by without something arriving in Mac Mail.app.
The catch here is the server is still accepting mail for my account. I can go to web mail, which I have set-up and working fine, and new emails are there! Mac Mail.app simple stops accepting them.
    I have tried:
    restarting both machines
changing the password to my account, on both machines
actually deleting my account from Mac Mail.app, restarting and creating my account again
Nada.... I can see emails adding up in web mail....grrrrrr.
The only way I know to resolve this is to, gulp, delete my account on the Server and set it up again. This seems to work but unless I've answered messages in web mail their gone! Poof. I do like to keep good records by saving and organizing business related emails. So when this happens I'm screwed.
    Any thoughts?

  • All sub-folders in Mac Mail cannot synchronize with Exchange Server 2010

    Hi all,
All sub-folders under Inbox in Mac Mail cannot be synchronized with Exchange Server 2010. There are 2GB messages size in Inbox folder and 500MB messages size under Inbox's sub-folders. All messages can be sent out and received and it can work in Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010 normally. However, all messages in sub-folders cannot be synchronized (empty sub-folders).
Does this problem relate to message synchronization order of Mac Mail with Exchange Server? Do all sub-folders messages be synchronized after synchronization complete of Inbox? The synchronization of sub-folders will not happen if the synchronization of Inbox does not complete, doesn't it?
All messages synchronization is over internet. Can anybody help?
    Thanks a lot

    Hi,
1.please check the mailbox send and receive quota for exchange 2013 migrated mailbox.
2.Please check the email attributes of the exchange 2013 migrated mailbox because it seems to be a problem with that particular mailbox.
3.Then do the message tracking and that would be the only way to find the where the send messages has gone.
4.Please check and confirm you have an enough space on the disk where exchange queue database is residing.
I think I need to create a receive connector in the 2013 to receive from 2010 ?
No need ,by design  exchange 2013 cas server default frontend receive connector will be having an
entire ipv4 and ipv6 segment and anonymous connection is checked by default.
I think I also need to create a send and receive connector for 2013 users to each other?
No need , an intra organisation send connector and the default receive connectors in exchange will be used
for internal mail flow between the exchange 2013 users.
Please reply me if you have any queries .

  • If you delete a POP mail account in Mac Mail can you get your mails back?

This has happened to a client of mine. She'd just set up a new account for her email as she'd moved servers. She had an old POP mail account on her Mac Mail for two years which she deleted and now all of her old sent mails are gone plus everything from the inbox that wasn't moved into folders.
How do you get those emails back? (I'm not sure if she has been using Time Machine to back everything up)
Will re-creating the old account help?

If she hasn't been backing up with Time Machine (or a full backup which hasn't been overwritten) they are gone. Recreating the account won't being them back.
If she has Time Machine, open (user)/Library/Mail in the Finder and then enter Time Machine. Navigate backwards looking for a folder named POP- and the name of the account. Use TM to restore that.

  • I have Yahoo mail provider but just lost my folders in Mac Mail program. The folders were not "On my Mac" but on "Yahoo". How do I get them back again?

I have Yahoo mail provider but just lost my folders in Mac Mail program. The folders were not "On my Mac" but on "Yahoo". How do I get them back again? I have reinstalled MacMail as everything had disappeared. The new install has given me everything except the Yahoo folders. When I looked one of the folders had reappeared, but now it has gone again. I am using Yosemite.
Desperate to find those folders with so much data involved.

Thanks for that babowa. If I add my Yahoo account it just goes straight to MacMail and says I already have an account. There seems to be no basic problem with mails going between Macmail and Yahoo. It is just the folders that have disappeared, while MacMail was out of action. I don't think those particular folders were ever on the Yahoo mail that I access through BT, they were just on the MacMail under "Yahoo" as opposed to "On my Mac". I am worried in case I lose what I already have if I press "Restore" from my back up. As you can see, I am not exactly good at this!
