Read the discussion after the article carefully, please.
I've read it more than once already. I know what it says. But thanks.
All programs MUST RUN in order to do anything.
Of course. Somebody has to start it off. And that person is the one who wrote it.
Viruses do not and cannot simply install themselves.
You can't be serious. Windows users would heartily disagree that they need to do anything to receive and propagate the thousands of viruses and worms they have to deal with.
The whole point here is that computer scientists have broken down these types of malware by catagory to define how they operate once in the wild. Not how they start.
A virus or worm, once started, requires no interaction with the user to continue its own duplication or spreading. Windows viruses only need (in most cases) access to your email address book. They will happily send themselves back out to everyone in your book without any interaction from you. Or copy themselves from one Word document to another in the case of macro viruses. Again, without any help from you, or even your knowledge. Worms don't even need that. They duplicate by searching out other computers on their own. Again, no interaction by you is necessary. All a worm requires is that your computer is on so it can attempt to find it and copy itself to you.
A Trojan Horse, however, is dumb. It cannot replicate or do whatever it is written to do until you intentionally run it yourself.

Apple Mail isn't going to change the format of any of your attachments. it isn't going to corrupt them either.
Exchange is a transport protocol and server. The issue you describe is not related to Exchange.
There are many different versions of Microsoft Outlook in use and they all have e-mail bugs. Different versions have different bugs. Some Apple Mail hack to get around a bug in Outlook 2003 may cause the same message to be problematic in Outlook 2000. Fix them both and another issue will cause trouble in Outlook 2007. You can't fix this. Apple can't fix this. Microsoft can and has but that is irrelevant if your recipients are using older versions.
One specific problem is that Apple Mail always sends image attachments inline, as images, not as iconized files. You can change this with Attachment Tamer. Just be aware that use of this software will break other things such as Stationery. E-mail is just a disaster. To date, no one outside of Apple has ever implemented the e-mail standards from 1993. Apple has continually changed its e-mail software to be more compatible with the de-facto standards that Netscape and Microsoft have unilaterally defined and people documented as "standards" after the fact. The e-mail messages that Apple Mail sends are 100% correct and do not violate any of the original standards from 1993 or the Microsoft/Netscape modifications. The problem is entirely bugs and limitations in various versions of Outlook.

For the fan issue, see if you can reset the SMC > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
That may help the restarts as well.

I have 3 emails i receive in Mail and only one that constantly has the spinning gray gear is with google apps.
Im using the free version, and it has worked great for a year.
I tried to send a video and it ended up in my recovery box as 50 copies.
I deleted the recovery mailbox and the account im having problems with.
After deleting, i manually aded it again.
    I can receive mail.

    Hello Roger
Thank you for your reply but I don't think it answers my problem. You see it is not my Apple ID Account that has been hacked. I use the Internet provider company known as Westnet in Australia and my email addresses all end in Westnet.com.au
The fake email address that was created is as below:

What I want to know is the IP address and location where this email address was created so that I can narrow down the list of suspects

  • Mac Mail has problems to display HTML embedded images

Well Im new here , but have a real problem.
I create  HTML pages with embedded images and send them off as MIME/multipart etc. mail through active server pages.
So far so good. All PC users see the mails with 2 embedded images at correct positions using windows e-mail .
However all Mac users receiving this mail have a problem,  then MAC mail show embedded images just as a box , the 2 images become attachements of the email.
If a PC user forwards such a  received HTML e-mail to a MAC user , the MAC Mail sees the 2 images are correctly displayed.
Thanks for hints and comments .

    Hello BDAqua
Thanks for the dump hint - I could use it.
Well I have not been able to track down the exact cause of the problem, but at the end I have succeeded to see the pictures even on the Mac. Initially , because I tested the HTML code against Safari/Foxpro/IE9 with success and the PC's received it as a mail  perfect with the pictures , I ruled out the code.
After sending it with various different parameters for 7-bit coding , multipart/alternative; multipart/mixed, with and without alternative ascii-text body, etc. and having no change of the problem (in one instance Mac stuck the pictures at the end of the mail instead of having it as attachement - but never displayed inside the page) I thought about the HTMLcode again (the mail small but was consisting of a cluster of multi nested tables, where in the pictures where placed). I started from scratch with one simple table and one picture - and saw it also on the Mac, so repeated reconstruction every table layer and picture with testing each step again - and at the end - it worked all. So my conclusion is that the mentioned browsers and windows mail are made more HTML fault tolerant for little code mistakes than mac mail.  It seems that when forwarding the page from windows-mail to Mac mail , windows even corrects and thats why then it was seen ok on the Mac.
I think that a number of people had similiar experiences. I contacted one advertising company (all Mac freaks and only Mac's there, they do a lot of Internet/Intranet design and develeopments for large companies) and asked them wether they know of any hints or problems - they simply said forget it it's not possible - which is not true - but seeing the HTML correct in all browsers doesn't mean it might ok for the mac mail.
Well any way I now know where I am and know where to look if suddenly a picture is not shown anymore...
Thanks for the help and all the best.
    Rgds

  • Mac Mail has emptied my gmail

I was playing with mac mail yesterday on my OS X macbook and synced mail with my gmail and it emptied all my gmail into mac mail. Is there a way to send it back?

First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't help & you can afford to redo any Mail Rules...
    Trash these files...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/... MessageRules.plist and MessageRules.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/... MessageRules.plist and MessageRules.plist.backup
    Reboot.

  • Mac Mail has gone bonkers!

    Hello everyone,
My macbook pro v.10.7.5 mail is having some major tantrums.
Firstly it won't let me delete any of my mail in eith of my accounts (home & uni)
    I get the following message:
"The IMAP command “UID COPY” (to Deleted Messages) failed for the mailbox “INBOX” with server error: Error copying message(s)."
This only started yesterday -  have searched and searched for some answers but only seem to find a lot of other people having the same issue.
Secondly my mac now won't let me receive any mail. I send (and hear the familiar 'swoosh' sound) but can not SEE my sent items (they do not come up in the sent box) and having tried to email myself i now can not receive any mail (having also tried to sign up to a site and waiting for a confirmation email, which has yet to arrive)
I'm about to go a little mad as I am in desperate need of my mail to work properly - as I'm sure everyone who is experiencing problems is!
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Yours sincerely,
    On-the-verge-of-madness-mac-user
    PRK.

If you are using IMAP only (so your email messages are still on the server) you can start with a fresh Mail setup.
In Finder under the "Go" menu, select "Go To Folder..." and enter:
    ~/library
In that folder there will be a "Mail" folder.  Make sure you don't have Mail running and rename that "Mail" folder to something else, like "Mail backup".  Now run the Mail app again and setup your e-mail account.  It will create a new "Mail" folder in the library folder and redownload all your e-mails.
If for some reason that does fix the problem you can get rid of the newly created "Mail" folder and rename the "Mail backup" folder to "Mail" and you will be back where you started.

  • Mac Mail has lost my mailboxes!

I created three mailboxes to file some of my e-mails under "On My Mac", and now two of them have disappeared. I think it happened inadvertently when I tried to delete the Yahoo inbox (which I've since learned how to do correctly). The odd thing is that the mailboxes show as existing when I try to create a new mailbox. And if I try to create a new one with the same name I'm told that the mailbox already exists. So why can't I see it?

  • Mac Mail has stopped saving copies of sent items

    Hello,
after a brief (2 day ) flirtation with IMAP, I went back to my trusty POP3 account and all is well - only it's not saving copied of sent email.
I've looked around and cant find any settings that would affect this - notably 'sent' items are set to nevr delete.
    Any ideas?

    You’re welcome.
You have a mail account in Preferences > Accounts that’s enabled but doesn’t show up in the Account popup menu when composing a new message?
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
    2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    3. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the Mail folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this solves the problem).
    5. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
    6. You’ll have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    7. You may also need to re-install or re-enable any Mail plug-ins you have installed for Mail to recognize them.
    8. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
    9. If the problem is fixed now and .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.
