Mac Mail in 10.6.8 keeps corrupting

My mac mail keeps corrupting and I keep running my disk utilities to fix the preferences which helps for a day or so the back to weird stuff, where when typing characters jump around or it won't let me type at all, then can't send the message after battling through it. Had to shut off one of my mail boxes because it could connect to the server and would just keep spinning. Tried to reistall Snow Leopard and it helped for a couple of days then back to same old. Also rebuilt the boxes.
What should I do to get my mail functioning again?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Any improvement?

So, I see several posts on this topic, with no solutions.... Is this a known issue according to Apple? If so, can some point me to the official release notes/ bug report??

I have the same problem. When I look at the message with Entourage, I found out that while under IMAP the attachment is not fully downloaded from the exchange server. Entourage gives you the choice to download this file. When I select, the file comes down and opens OK. I heard that some clients have a max size download setting for IMAP but Mac Mail does not. Anyone know how to get around this?

  • I remove the flagged status and the email disappears from STARRED in mac mail.  I want to keep it there, and I dont use "flags"

I have about 10 important files in my starred folder in Gmail - accessed using my browser.
using mac mail, the starred folder only contains mail deems "important" and "flags"
Not the important files I DEEMED as STARRED.
Why doe removing the flag delete it form starred folder in mac mail?
How do I get my starred folder in mac mail to contain those same 10 emails as Gmail website view?
and how do I get mac mail to stop flagging stuff it thinks is important?
(it doesnt know... no one knows. Only I know...heh)
    Thanks so much

    Anne,
AOL by policy deletes messages in the Inbox (and also the Sent) after 27 days. To save longer, the messages must be moved to the folder named Saved that AOL sets up on the server. There is nothing in Mail to cause this, but AOL's own action.
Is this perhaps what she is having issue with?

  • When using Mac mail, pictures received do not keep their original dates. Why?

Using the native mail application  (version 6.6) inside of OS X (version 10.8.5),  the dates from the photographs (sent by others) are being removed. To summarize of the picture was taken in November 2010 and sent via email, then saved from the mail application, the date appears to be January 2015.

There are two kinds of metadata involved when you consider jpeg or other image file.
One is the file data. This is what the Finder shows. This tells you nothing about the contents of the file, just the File itself.
The problem with File metadata is that it can easily change as the file is moved from place to place or exported, e-mailed, uploaded etc.
Photographs have also got both Exif and IPTC metadata. The date and time that your camera snapped the Photograph is recorded in the Exif metadata. Regardless if what the file date says, this is the actual time recorded by the camera.
Photo applications like iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom, Picasa, Photoshop etc get their date and time from the Exif metadata.
If iPhoto is not showing you the correct date, make sure the sender is including the Exif metadata when they send the photo.

  • Moving over from Mac Mail to Mac Outlook 2011

Hi All - I am in the process of moving from Mac Mail to Mac Outlook 2011. Could anyone please advise how I disable Mac Mail. I want to keep all of the old emails there but just start using Outlook 2011. I would happy for any suggestions. I am a bit wary to start trying touring over all of the emails from Mail to Outlook, I think it would be a very long process.
Sending emails from Outlook is taking a bit of time at the moment, I'm wondering if it is to do with still having Mail sitting there.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Loner T
Thanks so much for your reply. I have taken all of the accounts offline. It does say that the messages are being stored on servers.
Do you know is it easy or laborious to export the mailbox? I have not done this before.
    Thanks

  • Why doesn't iPhoto automatically open Mac Mail?

I'm hating iPhoto at the moment.  I use Mac Mail so that I can keep track of sent mail.  iPhoto doesn't do this.  For example, I just discovered that  a dead email account was still on the list in iPhoto preferences, so I'm not sure if the email I just sent went using my current or my old address.  I naturally went to Mac Mail to check my sent list, but there is no indication that I sent an email to anyone.
I also do not like typing the email  within a browser window.  I would much prefer it when I click "share" that Mac Mail would automatically open.
I really, really wish Apple would solve this problem.

Go to iPhoto's Accounts preference pane and delete the mail account that's there.  Then add it back and try Mail again.

  • My question actually has to do with mac mail. someone has corrupted it, and is using it to send out emails, which keep getting rejected. some of the strangest address's and so forth. anyone else had this problem? where and what can I do about it.

my mac mail is corrupted or being infiltrated. emails are being sent to whomever and where ever. the recipients are not from my known contacts list, and these emails are also being rejected.  where can I report this problem to, specifically what can I do about it.

Thinking about it, ClamX will find Windows as well as Mac malware. This might not have been a Mac trojan. Here's a list of recent Mac malware in the ClamX catalog.

  • Mail service keeps corrupting.

    Hello all,
My mail service keeps corrupting on my PowerMac running Mac OS X 10.3 Server.
I have reinstalled my server 3 times due to this problem.
Any one else having the same problem?
    any solutions?
    Thanks,
    Chris

In addition to Alex's request for logs, and more info- I would point out that you are TWO major revs behind. I bet the downtime is worth more than the 499 upgrade (the 10 user limit applies only to filesharing). Give tiger or 10.5.1 a try.
It rarely makes sense to troubleshoot something thats already been fixed by Apple.

  • Mac mail: keeps going offline for outgoing

Mac Mail account won't send mails - recieves fine. Checked all settings and tried various changes to no effect. Basically says it's offline after trying to send. Account had worked fine for several months until 2 days ago... any help welcome.
Running OSX 10.5.8 on macbook, Mail is 3.6 [936]

If Mail keeps asking for your password when retrieving mail, then it may very likely be that the password you entered has become corrupted in the Keychain. You should try this:
Open Keychain Access>Passwords and scroll through the list to find that specific entry and delete it; quit Keychain Access.
Restart Mail and enter your password again when it asks, and check the box to save it in the Keychain. If things work as expected, it will not ask you again unless your Keychain or an entry in it becomes corrupted again.

  • How can I keep just one of two accounts offline in Mac Mail?

I recently switched from Comcast to Cox Cable. Cox has a known issue with push notifications and email doesn't show up at regular intervals. You have to go offline and back on or quit Mail and then open it again to see new messages. It's a pain but it works.
I still have my Comcast email account enabled on Mac Mail because I need access to old emails and if I disable it (via Preferences), it disappears. I want to take it offline but clicking on the Comcast account and "take comcast.net offline" always takes my Cox account offline as well. I can't get them to both stay online because the Comcast account hangs when it can't connect to Comcast. This really exacerbates the already annoying issue of having to take Cox offline and back on.
I tried going into the Comcast account via Preferences and unchecking "include when automatically checking for new messages" but when I did so, it kept the Cox account from receiving any messages at all (I confirmed this by checking webmail, and by toggling it on and off to see what happened).
I need some solution that allows me to see the comcast account in mail without having it be active in any way. I have other mailboxes archived but that process doesn't offer the search capability that I need.

Aha! I have been doing just that. However, what has been tripping me up is that I am also used to clicking the Go Online/Go Offline toggle button on the top menu bar when I manually check for messages on Cox. Apparently when you take one inbox offline, that button switches to Off even though the other inbox is still online. If I just ignore that button and go on or off via the cox mailbox listing, it keeps comcast from being reactivated.
Thanks so much for helping me think this through.
Edited to add: I removed that dang button from my menu so I can stop clicking it.

  • Anyone know how to keep accounts offline in Mac Mail?

    Hi,
I use Mac Mail for business and personal accounts. I'm trying to prevent myself from getting distrated with personal email while I'm working, but I want to be able to recieve emails to my business account. So I take my personal accounts offline, and just keep my business account online when I'm working. But the problem is if I click the Get Mail button it takes all my accounts back online. Anyone know, is this a bug or is there some way around this? I can click on the mail box and select Syncronize account, but would be easier if I could just click the Get Mail btn without taking all the accounts online....
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!!

  • I have an iMac, and have a Verizon DSL account. Recently, my Mac Mail keeps requesting the passwords on my account every few minutes, and will not allow me to send messages using Mac Mail. I cannot edit the outgoing server; how can I send emails?

I have an iMac, and have a Verizon DSL account (3 email addresses). Recently, my Mac Mail keeps requesting the passwords on my accounts every few minutes, and will not allow me to send messages using Mac Mail (the message says that the outgoing server was rejected. I cannot edit the outgoing server, and the keychain will not save my passwords (the ports are valid). How can I change the outgoing server to send emails, and how can I avoid having Mail request my passwords every 2 minutes? Verizon, as usual, will not provide support to iMacs.

Is there an email saved in your drafts or outbox folder?  I suspect that Mail is continually trying to send it, and each time Google is rejecting the email message.
You can open the message and then delete it from your Outbox folder.  Then try removing all @gmail email addresses from it and seeing whether you can send to the other folks.  I suspect that will work.
With email, if an SMTP server *can* verify email addresses, sometimes it will and it will refuse to send messages.  If a message has to be relayed across servers, no verification is done, and you'll get a bounce if an email address is bad.

As Bob says, any iMap service can do this. GMail can, iCLoud mail can too.
Both of these can be used with Mail on any device.

  • Why does my Mac Mail programme keep turning on the SSL option?

For a couple of years now my wife's Mac Mail programme has from time to time stopped getting most of the emails sent to it for a week or more. I've wasted many hours on the phone to our service provider without ever getting to the bottom of the problem. Now I believe I know what's been happening. It seems that her Mail preferences keep turning on the SSL option without any human involvement. Apparently emails sent to an SSL selected email address will only make it into her in-box if they come from an SSL selected mail programme. Yesterday, scratching my head as to why, once again, few emails were getting through, I once again looked at the preferences and noticed that the SSL option, which I had recently unchecked, was once again checked. I unchecked it. It immediately re-checked itself. I unchecked it. It immediately re-checked itself. And so on, for ten minutes when, suddenly, it remained unchecked.
Why is this happening? My wife never, and I mean never fiddles with settings on her computer and nobody else uses it. The checking of the SSL option is being done entirely at the behest of the machine itself. Can anybody tell me how this could be happening? And could anybody tell me how I can stop it from happening again?

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Step 1 should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary, and if everything is working as expected after step 1.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
