Mac mail inbox suddenly empty

I have an old imac running on snow leopard, and I just got my mom a new imac with lion for christmas. She has two yahoo email addresses, so we set up Mail to import both, and it's been running fine for about 2 weeks now. Then suddenly tonight, one of her inboxes was completely empty. I tried syncing, taking it offline and back online, restarting Mail, I even deleted the account and re-added it, but it's still completely empty. The other email address is still working fine.
I've never had an issue like this with my own computer, and I just spent about an hour searching for solutions on google, to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I've been praising mac for years, and now my mom's first one is super buggy (this is just one of many issues she's been having -- another annoying thing is that it's losing the wifi connection every time it comes out of sleep.) I feel like it's such a letdown!
Anyway, I'd be very grateful if anyone knows how to fix this!

First, I don't know if you are aware that the free standard Yahoo email accounts does not support POP or IMAP to a native mail client like Mail. To gain POP access, you have to pay $20/year. I checked, Yahoo asks you to upgrade for this privilege. Now assuming that you paid, I would disable and re-enable the POP access by logging into your Yahoo account via a web browser.

  • How do you create a rule to forward/redirect emails to another account (eg: gmail) BUT, I DO NOT want emails to then appear in Mac Mail inbox?

I cannot close down my primary email account as it's attached to my current modem.
So it will have to remain open BUT I don't any emails going to this address.
I have created a gmail account and want any emails redirected to this account but wanted to ensure they don't also appear in the original Mac Mail Inbox.
    Any suggestions?

Changing the password as you describe only changes the password that your Mac sends to the mail server(s), not the password that the mail server(s) expect(s).
If the email account is "attached to [your] modem," it is supplied by your ISP (Internet Service Provider), and you must change the expected password through your ISP. Depending on your ISP, this may involve calling them on the phone, visiting a web site, or even using a special app. It may also require proof of your right to administer your email account.
After you have changed what your ISP's mail server(s) expect(s), you will need to change the password(s) your system sends in Account Information (for receiving) and Edit SMTP server list (for sending).

  • Mac mail inbox spinning wheel adjacent icloud inbox

my Mac mail inbox, adjacent the icloud tray has a continious grey spinning wheel, no new mail is coming in.
Also there is a grey clock adjacent Reminders/Notes/iCloud? Are they related; how to fix?

    Hi Eric,
    This is my very first post because I can usually fix things on my own, but I was freaking out a bit. I did so many things to mess up my mail, including changing an IMAP account to a POP account, applying rules that were not very smart, and when things started to go wrong, I deleted the POP account. Essentially, I pulled all my emails off the server, put them in a folder on my Mac, then deleted that folder by deleting the account. But, I appreciate your reply and potential solution. I'm always happy to learn more about my Mac, and now I know where I can look (home/user folder Library/Mail) should this happen again, so thanks for that. I was just going to leave a reply to my own post;
I panicked, but (I think) I have fixed this. I used Time machine to restore my inbox. Suffice it to say I have a much better understanding of Apple's Mail app and how careful you need to be with setting Rules. <—— (Very embarrassed face)

  • Mail folders suddenly empty

    Hi,
I am using Gmail on my mac, mailprogram Apple Mail,   Now suddenly when I open Apple Mail the entire mailbox is empty and the same occur when I open Gmail in chrome.
ALL folders are empty with one exception. a couple of incoming mail (the last ones) are still there. I have tried to send and receive mail and it seem to work but I can't get back all other mails. I looked at the trash folder it is also empty.
    What to do?
    Best Regards
    Kamal

I think they are gone for good due to Disk Corruption, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

  • Icloud email inbox suddenly empty

    Hey all,
installed IOS 8  and my icloud inbox is suddenly empty. What gives? Anyone else have this issue?
    Jude

You might want to just give it some time in case it't just a temporary server issue at Apple's end.  Otherwise you would have to contact Apple support as this isn't something you can troubleshoot on your own: http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/.

  • Mac mail inbox icon for new messages is missing

I just upgraded to a new macbook air and ever since then the Mac Mail is not showing me how many new messages I have in my inbox. It used to be that when I go into mac mail, there would be a gray circle to the right of each of my inbox titles with a number of how many new messages I have in my inbox. But now there are no gray circles, even when I do have new messages in my inboxes. Now in order to see how many new messages I have in each inbox I have to go in and click on each one (I know, my life is so hard). But I would love to get those gray circles back. I liked it. Interestingly, in my saved mailboxes of old messages, whenever I have an unread message stored in any of these, there is a corresponding gray circle with numbers. Why for the saved mailboxes but not for my inboxes? Anyone know how to help me?

    William - indeed and thanks.
I come from a Windows history that goes back to the late 1980's and used to be quite familiar with rebooting my laptop 7-30 times a week. When I moved to the Apple ecosystem, I forgot completely about having to reboot periodically - something I have discovered is necessary with Mac's, too. It is especially necessary with applications that get a lot of use - I cycle through a couple thousand e-mail messages every week.
I restarted Mail because it started acting up in other ways, too. Voila! Problem solved.

  • Mac Mail Inbox will not update

I have a user using a Macbook Air running Mavericks.  He has three accounts setup in mac mail.  2 are gmail accounts he's had in there for months.  The third is our exchange account which he's added more recently (only be in mail for the past 2-3 months vs 8-9 with the others).  Today he stopped recieving email in his exchange inbox, but only in mac mail.  He can still send email fine and recieves email in our web portal and on his iphone.
I tried removing the exchange account and re-adding it but that did not help.  It download 6 mails into the inbox and then stopped.  I then changed the name of the account from Exchange to his name and clicked save.  As soon as I did that, it downlaoded 5 new email and then just stopped again.  Manually clicking get mail does nothing.  I also tried changing th eaccount prefrences to check mail once every minute and five minutes vs automatically but neither helped.  It can still send emails just fine and his iphone/web portal work just fine (sending/recieving).
One of the two other gmail accounts works just fine with full functionality.  The other is an account that got disabled within the past week (not sure exactly when).  So it has no functionality as far as sending/recieving goes.  I dont want to remove the disabled box, because he wants the emails from there.  I havnt had a chance to export them or anything but I will try that soon and THEN remove the account.  but it should work without having to do this, shouldnt it?  Or do you think this might be causing mail to hang when checking the exchange account?
    Any other suggestions/options?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Removing the account will only delete the emails on the mail.app, meaning they should still be on the actual website from which you receive mail.  Try selecting the mailbox that doens't work and go to the menu bar and hit mailbox>rebuild.  If this doesn't work immediately don't give up.  It has to download all the emails again and how soon you will see them again depends on how many you have.
    Hope this helps,
         Jack

  • Gmail account IMAPed with Apple Mail. Apple Mail Inbox now empty! Where would the messages go?!?

I just synced up (IMAP) my Gmail account with Apple Mail. My apple mail inbox is now empty! Where would the messages go?!?

There is a better forum for issues with iCloud.
Apple has a couple tech note articles to help with email, and with gmail as well.

  • Dumb question Mac Mail inbox synchronisation

I'm really sorry if this is a dumb question...I have just started using Mac Mail (from Entourage) with a .Mac account and want to synchronise my messages across my two Macs. I thought that if I deleted messages on one mac, they would be deleted from the server and when I checked mail on the other Mac they would be gone. However, this does not seem to be the case - instead, I need to delete them on both macs. Is something in my setup wrong?
    Thanks for any help

I haven't....are you saying you think I should? Funnily enough, after never having had a problem before, I had a problem syncing my bookmarks yesterday, so maybe I should resetting the SyncServices.
Also, on the .Mac preferences - does it matter if the syncing schedule is set to be automatic, every hour, manual etc? Previously I had it set as manual, but maybe I need to set it as automatic?
Thanks again so much for your help.

  • Incoming AOL mail in Mac MAIL Inbox disappears after a week

I´ve setup my AOL e-mail accounts in Mac MAIL. Receiving and sending mail via my AOL accounts works fine, but incoming mail will stay only for one week in the Incoming mail folder of Mac MAIL. After one weeks it disappears from the Incoming mail folder and it´s not longer available in MAIL at all. (I can only access it throught the AOL software or AOL Communicator themself, where it´s archived.). Sent (AOL) mail on the other side is still available in the Sent folder of MAIL. Is there any way to keep/store the Received AOL mail in Mac MAIL?

    Hi Padua & JWurzak!
I don't know if this will help, but, in your AOL Preferences > Mail: under Automation, do you have the two options below checked?
    Save the mail I read
    Save the mail I send
Also, in AOL Preferences > Filing Cabinet: do you have Automatically delete items in my filing cabinet checked, and Never selected, in the contextual menus below?

  • Address Book (Name) Doesn't match up with my Mac Mail Inbox

I have a contact who is filled out in my address book but when He sends me an e-mail my Mac Mail gives him a weird 'From' name instead of showing his 'Full Name'. (Which is correct in my address book)
I have his e-mail address filled out in my address book and it matches the one he contacts me at.
    ex: http://screencast.com/t/Njg1ZDg4ODY
He appears as JS in Mac mail instead of showing his full name (which is what I'd prefer)
I hope that makes sense. If you need me to clarify anything, let me know.

The From name will be whatever name the sender is using. Not that the from address displayed in Mail is J S <etc....>. What you see within the angle brackets should be the actual mail address.
