Mac Mail on my iPad

I use Mac Mail (you know, the little postage stamp icon) on all my macs. I have a bazillion folders and almost as many "rules" to sort incoming mail into those folders. It all works beautifully across all my macs (BTW I have a MobileMe account). This is my problem, one that I first noticed with my iPhone and now on my iPad...the "rules" don't exist, so the mail all goes to my inbox UNLESS I have one of my Macs on somewhere else in the house or even in my office 20 miles away - THEN the mail gets sorted according to the "rule" on that Mac. The problem gets worse -- when mail on my iPad goes to my inbox, the push notifications tell me that I have mail (red/white number on Mail icon) and the number is usually correct. However, if I have a Mac on somewhere in the universe, the number is sometimes wrong -- i.e. I'll get a zero when I have mail that is unread but sorted to other folders. Sometimes the number tells me that I have mail in my inbox and when I open Mail and display my inbox, the unread mail appears and then quickly goes away - it gets sorted to the folder according to the "rules" on the Mac that is on and running Mail. Now, another problem is that this "sorted" mail is hard to find -- it gets put into a folder but there is no number next to the folder (as there is when I run Mail on my Macs) indicating an unread message is in that folder. I have to open each individual folder, let the iPad check for mail, and see if it finds anything!
Question -- is there a way to (a) use "rules" in Mail on my iPad, (2) get Mail to display numbers next to folder names indicating that there are unread messages in that folder, and (3) have Mail correctly tell me how many unread messages I have, even if they're scattered about in the various folders (like it does on my Macs)?
That's it, nothing serious, just a pain to deal with.

Since the iPad/iPhone/touch mail app is so different from the Mac version this is something you'll just have ti deal with. The new MM mail beta has rules so you could try pre-sorting on the server side with that tool...but it has it's own side effects too. Maybe the mail app will get a boost this fall with OS 4.

  • TS2621 can't access my mac mail on my iPad

My wife can't has not gotten any mac mail since July 9th. Her mail should have been forwarded to her gmail account but; nothing. Nothing also on our mac mini (OS 10.5) from her account. Any thoughts?

Has she checked her @me account? It's possible it was a mobileme account that never got switched over to icloud. Try logging into the @me account. If it still exists, make sure it's being forwarded to the correct place

  • Mac mail and iPad

Could anyone tell me why I can't see my mac mail on my iPad. My iMac shows it fine and I thought this was synced to the iPad when the two were connected.
    thank you

If your Mac mail is a POP account - it will not sync messages to the iPad. IMAP email accounts sync all content identically from device to device.
You can sync your email account settings from the email account, but you are not able to sync messages. You can sync the email settings under the Info Pane of iTunes.

    HI,
The Apple IDs from @mac.com and @me.com (Older MobileMe and more recent iCloud Names) are also Valid AIM Screen names.
Any other sort of Apple ID is not a Valid AIM Name.
A Google ID that is associated with Google Mail Account (And has "Talk" enable on your Google Settings) can be used in iChat as  Jabber Name/ID.  (Google Run  Jabber server).
Jabber and AIM are different IM Services and it is not easy or straight forward to add Buddies from one Service to the Buddy List of another.  (As A Starting point consider it "impossible")
iChat 4 and 5 have links to the registration page of @Mac.com here with a "Get an iChat Account" button in the add (Account) screen  (You select @mac.com or MobileMe and then press the Button - Choosing AIM and then pressing the button used to lead to the AIM registration page but AIM moved their page).
Apple IDs can be any valid email (or an @mac.com or iCloud registration)
Therefore you could make a Google ID into an Apple ID.
However this will not be a valid AIM Screen Name the way @mac.com or MobileMe/iCloud ones are.

  • Mac mail not syncing deleted messages with iPad email?

I'm very frustrated with the mail sync between my MacBook and my iPad. My Microsoft Exchange (@student.uml.edu) email for school will NOT sync between my Mac and my iPad.
When I delete mail from from Mac mail, it does not delete on my iPad. This has led me to have 3 read emails in my inbox on my MacBook and 45 emails on my iPad. I can't imagine having to keep track of deleting emails from my laptop then again on my iPad thats just silly.
Am I doing something wrong here? Help!

I have the same problem in the opposite direction - I can delete things on my iPad but they don't delete on my MacBook and Mail won't let me delete them. My problem is also with an educational Exchange account. Other accounts sync without problems.

  • TS4083 My folders that message rules divert emails to don't update when I open Mail on my iPad or iPhone. Only the inbox does. I have to click on each folder for it to update. Is there a way around this? The folders update on my mac fine when i check mail

My folders that my message rules on iCloud divert emails to don't update when I open Mail on my iPad or iPhone. Only the inbox does. I have to click on each folder individually for it to update. A real pain as I have about 30 folders. Is there a way around this ? The folders update on my mac fine when i check mail without having to select each one of them. Can the iPad and iPhone do the same thing?

My Mac has 4 mail accounts coming into it, but you are correct, one of them is a POP account, (and unfortunately it is the main @ account, and is the one associated with my apple id, since we've had it for years).  I couldn't figure out how to replace this with the Imap version, short of deleting that account entirely.
Is this what I have to do?
    Thanks for your help!

Did you select the Pages app to sync to the iPad? Do you know how to do that or do you auto sync and rely on that only?

  • My Mac Mail subfolders on my MacBook Air will not sync in alphabetical order. I am assuming it is a setting that I am not finding since my iMac based at my home office is fine, so is my iPad and iPhone. The core source is Exchange.

If you have been using the mac.com Apple ID to make iTunes purchases recently, then there should be no issues continuing to use it with the new iPhone. I would abandon the new ID as you will never get Apple to merge the two IDs. I have had a mac.com ID for years and continue to use it with my iPhone 4S.
Tell us the issues that you encounter trying to set up the iPhone with the mac.com account.

  • Attachments getting lost on Mac Mail, but not on iPad/iPhone

We use several Mac computers, iPhones and iPads in our business, with GoDaddy as our email server. Emails with attachments work fine on the iPhones and iPads, but we are now losing the attachments on the Mac computers. This has recently happened. Any ideas? Is this a software update issue? I am running the OS X 10.8.3 version.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

As Bob says, any iMap service can do this. GMail can, iCLoud mail can too.
Both of these can be used with Mail on any device.

  • Mac Mail ToDos not showing up in Mail or separately like Notes in iPad

I use Mac Mail--(love it--so intuitive!) on a Mac desktop. I have had an iPad for only about 2 months, so I'm still learning how to use it. I can't seem to get my "to do" list that is integrated on Mac Mail to show up either in Mail in the iPad or as an "app" as the cute yellow "Note" pad does. Is this just something that Apple left out of the iPad interface? If so, I'm very disappointed since I am totally committed to using Apple products and software whenever possible. If the "to do" from Mail cannot show up in the iPad, which free "to do" list do others recommend? I've tried a few--prefer free apps--haven't found one that's great. Some are OK. Thanks for any suggestions!

    HI and welcome...
    Try this...
Launch iTunes with your iPad connected to your Mac. From the Info tab under Other, select: Sync Notes. then click the Sync button bottom right side of the iTunes window.
Evernote might be more then you are looking for but offers great features and is free.

On your iPad, just go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, etc.>Add account>iCloud and put in the details of the account you set up.  Shouldn't be a problem at all.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

  • Mail Disappears off iPad after I access my mail on Mac

I have a MacPro desktop, iPad, and iPhone, all tied together, all running the most recent updates.  Recently, my iPad was acting up and not retrieving my mail on my main account.  The other devices were (and continue to be) just fine.  I deleted that mail account off my iPad, then added it back in.  Email began behaving and getting delivered just like always EXCEPT if I then check email on my MacPro.  Once I do that, all inbox email associated with my main account, both read and unread COMPLETELY disappears off my iPad.  Even if the message is flagged, it is gone.  Everything stays put on the Mac and the iPhone until I delete it or otherwise.
I searched these communities and thus far have tried shutting down all background apps, restarting (multiple times) and changed the delete messages setting to "never", which really should only matter to trashed messages, not those sitting in my inbox.
I checked the "server port" on my phone and compared it to the one on my iPad.  They were different, so I put them both on the same one as the iPhone.  The message showed up on the Mac and on the iPad, but as soon as I refreshed the mail (such as to update), **POOF** the message in my inbox was gone on the iPad.
I would be most appreciative if someone could offer me insight as to why this occurs and how I can fix it.  Likely it is some squirrelly setting I haven't discovered yet, but I am hoping one of you geniuses out there can set me straight!
    Thank you in advance~

Well, cripes.  My husband just saved the day for me.  We had to force the iPad to take a POP account.  Here's how we did that:
Create a new mail account on the iPad with a bogus email address and a different name from your problematic IMAP account.  In my case, I doubled up on a number that is part of my email address.  Thankfully, nobody else had that email address
When the iPad refused to add the account because it was a bogus email address and came up with the error message, THEN it let me choose the ability to add a POP account.
I was able to edit out the extra number from the bogus email address to my true email address.  I had to do this in three places: the main account name, the inbox info and the outbox info, and take out the "IMAP.xxxxx " part and replace it with the "mail.xxxxxx" entry that goes with my POP account (that was listed in the settings on both of my other devices that were behaving: the iPhone and the MacPro).
Now you should have two accounts for the same email address (with two different names) showing on the iPad.  Go back through mail settings and "DELETE ACCOUNT" for the IMAP version that was screwing everything up.
Inbox messages should now stay on your iPad because it is using the same type of account the other devices are.
Apple, why in the name of all things good and electronic would you make it a default to IMAP without an obvious way to choose to do a POP?   Good grief I had a week of stress over this whole thing and nobody else seemed able to figure it out either.
