Mac mail or entourage

I have been using entourage for quite some time now. Oddly enough I think it is the one program that microsoft makes better than apple. I just purchased a new macbook and i was thinking about making the switch to mac mail. any feelings one way or the other.

This is completely a personal preference.
You can use the Mail.app for some time and import all Entourage messages to the Mail.app and contact information to the Apple Address Book and if you don't like it, do the same in reverse choosing selected Mail.app mailboxes to import back to Entourage.
I used Entourage X for a long while when Office X was first introduced along with the Mail.app under Jaguar but I switched to using the Mail.app exclusively when Panther was introduced and I haven't looked back.
Personal preference but I consider Entourage a bloated application in the respect there are too many options that I don't need or use.
I upgraded to Office 2004 shortly after it was introduced and I use Entourage 2004 on occasion to access my .Mac account as an IMAP type account for experimenting/testing purposes only but I just prefer the simplicity and interface of the Mail.app. Entourage is just too busy for me and in addition, I don't like the idea of storing all application data - mail, calendar and address book data in a single large database file as Entourage uses.
If you are that sold on Entourage, you probably won't like the Mail.app but if you do decide to give the Mail.app a try, give it a fair test such as much longer than a couple of weeks and refrain from using Entourage during that time.

  • Exporting emails from Mac Mail to Entourage

Is there a way to take ALL of the emails etc from Mac Mail & transfer them to Entourage is one easy step? - I have looked at importing them from Mac Mail with Entourage's 'import assistant'..but it doesn't give Mac Mail as an option to import from...any help gratefully received - thanks

    Alex,
This thread is getting unbelievably messy for what originally was such a simple question. Nowhere did I say that the procedure I suggested was meant for a particular type of account or mailbox. It allows any messages to be exported in standard mbox format. It’s Stanley who mentioned IMAP as an alternative procedure to transfer mail between mail clients, and what I said in the post you’re replying to is precisely that IMAP has nothing to do with what I was talking about...
What does “suitable for archiving” mean? If you have any questions that have nothing to do with the problem of transferring mail from Mail to Entourage, which is what we’re supposed to be talking about here, please either find a thread that discusses the same questions or start a new topic to properly discuss them in their own thread instead of hijacking someone else’s thread. Here is a recent example of such a thread:

  • Cannot send mail from mac mail or Entourage

    Hi guys,
Wondered if anyone out there can shed some light on this little problem.
I use Entourage for my emails & all was working fine until yesterday. I can receive mail from all and sundry but I can't send anything. I subscribe to ntlworld internet service and if log onto my email through their webmail, then it's fine. I've tried sending mail from mac mail and I get the same problem. I've been onto microsoft support & gone through all the troubleshooting with Entourage. The Entourage techy suggested it was my internet provider blocking my emails as they think I'm a spammer?? I phoned ntl & they insist it's nothing to do with them as I can send/receive from the website. (If I send an email with the address @ntlworld it's fine, but any other address i.e. all my clients/mates etc just stays in my outbox.
Nothing on any of my settings has changed so I'm at a loss what to do next.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Mel

it may be that your server (internet provider) has just started blocking outgoing mails not authenticated by them.
Go to your account set up...
and fill in the following details.
    SMTP SERVER: smtp.mac.com
then click on advanced sending otions...
click on override default SMTP port... type 587
click on SMTP servber requires authentication...
use same setting as receiving mail server.
    try this...

  • Comparing Mac Mail and Entourage?

How do people compare the pros and cons of Mac Mail vs. Entourage?
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

A broad question, but the first point of consideration might be if you use an Exchange Server (at your place of work as an example) for Mail, Calendar, Contacts, etc. Entourage is more or less Microsoft's equivalent of Outlook for the Mac, and easily integrates with Exchange.
Mail is a standalone mail application, that allows you to access POP or IMAP mail services.
    Hope that helps,

  • Importing emails to Mac MAil from Entourage

I just imported all of my emails from Entourage 2008 to Mac Mail. Although it seemed to go smoothly, setting up all the corresponding folders on "On My Mac", I've discovered that the sub-folders only contain the headers of the emails and none of the content!
Has anyone else come across this and does anyone know of a fix?
    Thanks

OK Ignore that - I found that if i moved the subfolder up one level and then started a new folder and moved it back that the emails miraculously appeared. Strange bug!

  • How do I move group lists from Entourage to Mac Mail

Does anyone know a way to import a group mailing list from Entourage into Mac Mail? Entourage says something about exporting to a note first but I’m lost. Any light anyone could shed would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    John

Does Entourage export as CSV (comma separated vars)? You can import that file format into Contacts.

  • Dumb question Mac Mail inbox synchronisation

I'm really sorry if this is a dumb question...I have just started using Mac Mail (from Entourage) with a .Mac account and want to synchronise my messages across my two Macs. I thought that if I deleted messages on one mac, they would be deleted from the server and when I checked mail on the other Mac they would be gone. However, this does not seem to be the case - instead, I need to delete them on both macs. Is something in my setup wrong?
    Thanks for any help

I haven't....are you saying you think I should? Funnily enough, after never having had a problem before, I had a problem syncing my bookmarks yesterday, so maybe I should resetting the SyncServices.
Also, on the .Mac preferences - does it matter if the syncing schedule is set to be automatic, every hour, manual etc? Previously I had it set as manual, but maybe I need to set it as automatic?
Thanks again so much for your help.

  • Auto Capitalize in Mac Mail?

I do not think that there has been an Auto Capitalize function on past mail but does anyone know if there is one in Leopard? Entourage does it a the begging of each sentence. If not is there a work around? I am trying to move to mac mail from Entourage. Not to big a deal but it is very nice function!

Did u find an answer to this problem? This is really annoying me as well. the other annoyance I am trying to find a solution for is getting Mail.all to automatically include a space between the end of a sentence and the beginning of a new sentence. Please let me know if you have a solution for either or both these issues.
    Thanks!

  • Can't send Mail on Mac Mail, but can on Entourage - what am I doing wrong?

    Aggg. Help.
I have been using Entourage on my Macs, and have decided to switch to Mac Mail. I have multiple accounts for my websites on my dedicated server. I use standard ports for sending and receiving mail - and, as it is my server, I can dictate all controls.
So... I can receive mail on my Macs, but can not send. I am trying to set-up IMAP accounts - and my server requires i use as outgoing" mail.mywebsite.com
I use a linux server using cPanel.
It works on Entourage. But Mac's Mail will not accept the outgoing mail information. I have tried with and without authentication (which is required). I have overridden the port and tried each individually (25, 465, etc..). I have tired smtp.mywebsite.com rather than the required mail.mywebsite.com, just to see. I have tried every combination of information with no luck. I sort of think I know how to set it all up, but can not understand what I am missing?
Why can I not get Mac Mail to send?
I can match what is in use by Entourage - but it just does not work.
I use MS Office 2008's Entourage - and to make things more fun, Mac Mail will not import my Entourage accounts (says it can not find them). I am using a 3 month old iMac with latest OS. I have been on Macs since 1988 - so I just don't get what is going on. HELP PLEASE. Puuuullleeeeeaze.
    thanks!

    Hello,
If you open the Activity viewer (click on Window in the menubar and choose Activity) and watch when you try to send, what phases if any are indicated are taking place before failure?
What type of authentication is required for this SMTP? When using in Entourage, what are the selections in Advanced sending options, particularly regarding the box beside Use same settings as receiving mail server?

  • I've stuck with Entourage way too long. Now I don't dare install the Mavericks OS because all my Entourage files will go away. And my iMac won't open Mac Mail (probably because I've never opened it in the 5 - 6 years I've owned the Mac.) Any suggestions?

If you are wondering why you are not getting any responses, it is because you have vented a complaint without any details that make any sense or give anyone something to work on.
If you want help, I suggest actually detailing what has happened, with versions of software etc. Anything that would let us assist.
As a start I am guessing that you have not really got the hang of "How it all works". Firstly download the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf from under the Help menu. Read that and view the Video Tutorials in the same place. A good addition would be the iWork 09 Missing manual book and something to help you learn how to use your Mac.

  • Moving from Entourage to Mac Mail

    Hey All,
I'm moving all of my mail accounts over to mac mail so that when the time comes that I have my iPhone (few months hopefully) all my mail will go to the mac mail app, and thus to my phone as well.
First is there a way I can move all of my messages that i have saved from Entourage over to mail (without forwarding each individual one) AND i can't figure out how to create folders. I can make a smart mailbox, but I'm trying to create a folder so that, for instance, when my boss sends me an email, i can move it to the folder, so that I can save it. OR even have a rule set so that messages from my boss go to that folder. I was able to do it in entourage, i'm just wondering if i can in mail?

For import, read this apple article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/2.0/en/ml807.html
For creating folder read this apple article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/2.0/en/ml611.html

  • Changing from microsoft entourage to mac mail 7.2 ?

Is there a way to switch from Microsoft Entourage 2008, Version 12.3.5 [latest installed update v 12.3.6] to Mac Mail 7.2 and keep all my mailboxes and contacts?
    John Modder

Open Entourage, drag the email account folder to the desktop of your Mac, this will produce an .mbox file. Import that file into Mail (File>Import)
Theoretically your folder structure should be intact, realistically it may not be.

  • How can I access old Entourage emails to import them into Mac Mail after upgrading to OS Lion?il

How can I access old Entourage emails to import them into Mac Mail after upgrading to OS Lion? I don't really want to go back to Snow Leopard in order to access the old Microsoft Applications, but they simply aren't supported in Lion.

In Mail you can select Import Mailboxes... from the File menu. There is an import from Entourage feature.

  • Viewing entourage messages in mac mail

my office uses entourage. i prefer to use mac mail so i can manage my personal messages and work messages from the same program. so i set up a new account in my mail preferences with the proper incoming and outgoing mail servers and am getting my messages and sending them out fine.
    PROBLEM IS...
i keep missing meetings because i'm getting everything BUT calendar events people at work send me. i don't know why these specific messages are being transferred to my mac mail (if i open entourage they are there - but that defeats the point). at my last job we used entourage and these calendar events went through - i'd just click on them and they'd go into ical and i could reply right then and there. is it because my new office account is an exchange account?
anyway, anyone know how i can get these meeting notices to come to my mac mail?
    thanks

I saw similar behavior at my previous employer when using an account set up as an "Exchange" account. I eventually found two workarounds:
    1) Set the account up as an IMAP account. That seemed to show the invites and I was able to add them to iCal.
    2) Leave it as an Exchange account and when you get an invite (the subject or message content should tip you off to such), try cycling through the message views. You can do this either by going to View -> Message and then going through the options in the submenu that pops up, or by using command-] (next alternative) or command-[ (previous alternative). You should be able to see the invite and then add it to iCal.
Then again, none of this would be necessary if Mail handled Exchange accounts properly instead of just using IMAP (for example, I can't use Mail here at work because IMAP is disabled on the Exchange server), but that's a whole different can of worms.
    Hope this helps.

Your default mail program is set in Mail->Preferences->General. Choose which program you want from the drop-down menu, then quit Mail and restart it.
Of course, you'd be helping yourself if you deleted Entourage or at least removed all your account information from it, so that if you ever launched it by accident, it would not be able to send or receive email.
