Mac mail & Outlook express COmpatibility?

G'day,
I'm sending family emails with photos attached from my mac to their PC. THey're using outlook express on XP. They get the photos fine but they can't save them. It tells them the file is transparent?
I'm figuring it's a PC problem because we all know there's nothing wrong with Mac. But I was hoping someone knows what's going on here, especially if the fault is actually on my end.
Cheers, John

John,
If you are sending with Rich Text Format, and if because of more than one font being used (such as might result from some Signatures) try testing using only Plain Text. When only one font is used, Mail converts it to Plain Text when sending attachments, but cannot do so if two or more fonts are being used, even if the same font, but different size or color. In the latter case, the RTF gets converted to some poor HTML. You can see the difference when examining any message you send in Raw Source.

  • Moving emails from Mail on Mac to Outlook Express on Windows...

Can anyone help me with the following scenario?
I have one Mac computer, with 2 accounts set up on it - one for me, one for my wife.
My wife just recently got a Windows 'netbook' and now wants to transfer her entire Mail.app InBox to the new PC. There's no need to copy the Address Book (copied on a mobile phone already), and she doesn't really need the Sent Items or anything like that. All that she's interested in copying over is all the emails that are in Mail.app's InBox.
The netbook has Windows XP on it, and Outlook Express.
Bear in mind that there are hundreds of messages, so anything that involves saving/exporting each email individually one by one is not really an attractive option.
Also, a fair amount of the emails will have attachments, so any method that supports retaining the attachments is welcomed.
I know the Mac OS and all its apps like the back of my hand, but I must admit to being a total noob when it comes to Windows.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
    Mac OS 10.5.5
    Mail 3.5
UPDATE: I do have Entourage 12 (Office 2008) on my Mac too, which is currently not used at all, if this can be used for any intermediary steps.

I'm fairly sure you would be better off avoiding Outlook Express in favour of Mozilla Thunderbird, I have a Windows XP X64 PC that I used as my main pc before buying my MBP and used Thunderbird on it, when I got my MBP I remember moving the emails across was very easy, Mail.App and Thunderbird use a similar file structure, I'm sure I just dragged and dropped whole directories across (it is some time ago though).
Here are 3 links, the first discusses Thunderbird and importing/exporting mail.
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Importingand_exporting_yourmail
    This gets more specific
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=363915 - you need to read down, he has put a 'how to on the post'
The second is a program for converting from emix to mbox format.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/29050
BTW Thunderbird can be installed on OSX and Windows, so you can move all the emails over on the mac, check them with Thunderbird, before installing TB on your windows pute.
    Best of Luck.

  • Leopard Mail & Outlook Express 6.0

For all of you struggling to get your mail clients to connect via POP to your standard Leopard Mail Installation - here's what I found.
    They don't work well together...
I found that everything works great with the same configuration settings with the Thunderbird mail client. I suspect that Outlook Express just finally fell off the usability wagon...
    Cheers,
    Scott

It takes some extra doing to get a standards-compliant mailserver like Postfix to accept non standards-compliant Windows mail software.
However, if you mean 6.0 then you're talking XP pre- SP2 which you shouldn't be using at this point.
Setup an alternate ("submission") port in /etc/postfix/master.cf
This will enable ssl but not require it. Personally I *do NOT* recommend making this port available outside your firewall, - but you may need to - proceed at your own risk.
Then set the client to use this port (587)
    587 inet n - n - - smtpd
    -o smtpdclientrestrictions=
    -o smtpdrecipient_restrictions=permit_sasl_authenticated,reject_unauthdestination,reject
    -o smtpdusetls=yes
    -o smtpdenforcetls=no
    -o content_filter=

  • I lost mail Outlook Express 5

please help me. yesterday there was some mistake and I lost all emails from outlook express 5. can be because of a system recovery point? I did kickback
of system since the system is a bit buggy. I am asking if you can help me! I don't know what to do. all emails are very important. Pleaseee(

Go to the directory where is lie the database of outlook express 5 and look at their size. Perhaps there was a compression of bases and there was a failure.
Note the files with the file extension dbt or bak. If they weigh a lot, it means that the mail has been preserved. Rename the dbt file to dbx. Base lying here
    Documents And Settings\$user\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\type {C2CA6003-39F5-43A0-80BA-A61F26C35534}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
But to get there via Windows Explorer you need to enable showing hidden folders. My computer - the top menu Tools - folder options - View Tab - there to
tick Show hidden and system folders. there also to tick (if no) - Show file extensions.
If in this way not be able to recover emails, then you have to use
Address Book Restore Toolbox. By means of this utility you precisely will be able quickly to restore the letters.
    http://www.mail-repair.com/
Here you can read additional recommendations about restoration of .dbx of files.

  • Sync e-mail outlook express

After spending a number of fruitless hours I'm concluding there is no such thing as iTouch doing a viable e-mail sync with Outlook Express. I should be able to pick up and send emails for a given e-mail account from my iTouch and my laptop, perform a sync, and then end up with the inboxes for that e-mail account looking the same on both devices -- Right?? But that is not what I'm seeing. I'm still trying to figure out what, if anything is happening but am a too frustrated. Hopefully there is some one who can shed some light. I need to take an asprin now ):
    Thank you.

I'm looking for a way to have all the emails I've sent/received via my iTouch, for a particular email account, copied over to my laptop and then have all the activity for that same email which is send/received via my laptop, copied over to my iTouch. That way all the activity for that one email acount will be on both the iTouch and the Laptop. And I can use the laptop e-mail client to archive all the email activity for that account.
Do I need to use another e-mail client on my Windows laptop which is better supported by an iTouch sync? Or perhaps I am forced to by a subscription to MobileMe??

  • How do I put an icon for Outlook Express on the home page????

Having just moved into FF 3.6.1 from IE8, I am use to having an icon for the mail (outlook express) on the home page. I set outlook up in 'Options';'Applications';'mailto' as default, however, how do I set up an icon on the home page that will enable me to read my mail.

GetMail extension adds that feature to Firefox. <br />

  • Mac OS 10.4 Mail takes longer to receive than on Outlook Express 5

I receive email via Outlook Express 5.0.6 within an hour (but hate to use it). It can take Mac OS 10.4.8 Mail up to 24 hrs longer. Mail Preferences are set to: Check for new mail:” Every 30 min.” Under Accounts>Advanced: “Enable This Account” and “Include when automatically when checking for new mail” are both checked. The ISP is Comcast. What is the problem?

We have the same problem. The user rights under Leopard are not interpreted correctly while the Tiger clients show the correct entries. I´ve posted another topic to that thing...

  • Importing Address Groups from Outlook Express 5 (Mac) to OS 10.3 Mail

I've successfully imported all my emails and email folders from Outlook Express (Mac) to Mail. The contacts imported into my Address Book, but not collected into their groups. I need those address groups!
Thanks for any pointers you can offer.

    Resolved.

  • Why won't attachments sent from Mac Mail show up for an Outlook Express recipient?

I use Mac Mail on a MacBook Pro. When I attach image files to an email message, a recipient using Windows Outlook Express can't receive the attachments as attachments; they're just embedded in the message. What can I do to ensure that attachments go through as attachments?
    Thanks in advance.
    dh

There's been a lot of discussion on this.  Some indicate that setting your email format to plain text will result in the photos being just attachments.  When I've tested it by sending to myself that's not been the case.
There's a 3rd party plugin for Mail that is supposed to do what you want.  I've not tested it so can't comment one way or another:
One way to assure the image files travel as attachments is to put them in a folder first and add the folder to the email body. That zips/compresses the folder and sends it that way.

  • Recently installed parallels on my iMac and created email account in outlook express where all my emails now are but have gone from my mail on the mac

I have recently installed parallels on my Macbook and created my existing email account within outlook express which has all emails but by doing this it has removed all emails from Mail on the Macbook. I don't won't to delete from outlook then find I have lost them forever. I'm just trying to find out how I can get them back to their original place in Mail.
    Any help would be great.

    Hello,
If has more than one account, the Inbox icon, for example, should have a black triangle if the accounts have been correctly added via the assistant. If that triangle is pointing sideways, then he clicks on it, it should turn downward, and reveal the Inbox for each account. If he does not have but the one account, then the Inbox should be that of the AOL account. Same with Sent Drafts, etc.
If the triangle beside Inbox reveals other folders such as Sent Items, click to open that, and then click Mailbox in the menubar, place cursor on Use this Mailbox for and choose Sent.
AOL is IMAP access, so can be tricky. The folders under AOL lower in the Sidebar are for other archiving. AOL only allows messages to stay in the Inbox and Sent folder for 27 days, and then you must Move the messages to the Saved folder to keep longer on the server. Of course, various On My Mac mailboxes can be created to save messages, and those will be on the hard drive of his Mac.
In Mail 2.x and OS 10.4.10 there is no longer a separator for On My Mac in the Sidebar, but is with 10.3.x and Mail 1.3.x
This may or may not be such a good idea to have switched him without being in front of his computer to provide some instruction

  • Outlook express to Mac mail

I've just bought a new iMac and need to transfer data from my old PC (Windows XP). I plan to use an external hard disk.
But how can I transport my Outlook Express Mailbox to the mailbox on my new iMac? I understand I need to create mbox files? How can I do that from my PC? I'd be really grateful for some quick advice if possible. Thanks a lot!

Ksheldon, several questions to make sure how you should proceed:
    - what was the OS on your old Mac
    - how is it connected to your new Mac
    - do you have a copy of your old data on your new Mac?
If properly connected, you may give the Import function a try (in Mail, File menu, import mailboxes). Follow the instructions and see if it can find your Outlook data.
    Also have a look here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=455571&tstart=0
Although Outlook Express is listed as an import option it apparently gives problems. Makes sure you backup old Mail data before you play around with it.
