Mac mail periodically stops connecting to imap server

I have mail set up on both my iPhone and MacBook Air.  Everything works great with mail on the iPhone.  However, periodically throughout the day, Mac Mail decides to stop connecting to the imap server.  Quitting Mac Mail and restarting it corrects the problem.  It continues working for awhile but then stops at what seems to be random times.  It's quite frustrating.
Any ideas how to correct the problem on the MacBook Air.

  • HT2480 Ipad mini - exchange email stopped working randomly  Error: "Cannot get mail. The connection to the server failed."

I got an iPad mini over Christmas and have had no issues setting up/managing my email until yesterday. I've had my Exchange email working for almost a month, and yesterday I stopped getting emails and getting the error: "Cannot Get Mail. The connection to the server failed."
I tried resetting the device (multiple times) and deleting and recreating the Exchange account (multiple times). This is getting annoying because it worked fine up until yesterday. I'm not aware of any updates to the device, or any changes that have occurred since yesterday.

Due to a screen issue, I had my iPhone 5 replaced two days ago. I repeated deleted the mail account and kept adding it but this did not make any difference. When I attempted to setup the new phone with my Google (Gmail via exchange active sync) accounts I was receiving this same "Cannot Get Mail" error. From what I was able to gather, this problem should be affecting Gmail accounts set up via Exchange. When originally purchasing the phone I was assisted and directed to set up my Gmail account through Exchange because it had the ability to use "ActiveSync" and push not only mail and calendars, but all of my contacts as well. I found this article regarding the subject.
    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2413283,00.asp
What it came down to was having to delete my Gmail via Exchange account and separate it into two different accounts, a regular gmail account for my mail and a CardDAV account for my contacts.
Here is what I did. Google is changing their system and for new registrars Exchange ActiveSync will not work so you will be unable to register your account via Exchange and have your mail, calenders, and contacts all pushed together. I find this change really annoying. If you are having problems accessing your contacts after deleting the mail account, like I was, here is the work around.
To circumvent this issue go to Setting > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > Other > Add CardDAV Account: Under server ender google.com, then your email user name and password, then click next to verify the information.
    I hope this helps.

  • ICloud on Mail not connecting to IMAP server since Lion update

Since the latest lion update, my Mail has been unable to recieve or send any mail.
Mail connection Dr is showing the following error; "Could not connect to this iCloud IMAP server."
Here's a few screenies showing the problems; http://imgur.com/a/VA7x1
Does anyone know what this could be? Thanks.

    Thanks for the responces, both!
I've tried re-signing in, in both mail and through system pref. I just get the following error at the starting "Welcome to mail" splash screen
The iCloud IMAP server “p04-imap.mail.me.com” is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages.
As to the mail server, I can only assume no! As far as I can remember it was just a case of username+password and I was good to go. Really stumpped as to why this has happened.

  • Mail.app doesn't hava connection with imap server when changing network.

Ive got a strange problem after upgrading OSX from 10.6.8 to 10.8.4.
I have got a xserve, with osx 10.6.8. (mail) server installed on it.
When i am in the office (LAN) mail works just fine. if iam home and wake my macbook from sleeping i see in the mail app the attention mark telling my something is wrong with the mail account.
If i open the connection doctor it say's can't connect to IMAP server. if i check my iOS devices there is nothing wrong, everything is working and i can send/recieve mail. on iOS and OSX the settings are the same with SSL enabled and password type.
When i tried to telnet the mailserver address with the IMAP or SMTP port i get a connection. so, there is no firewall blokking my connection.
But now the strange thing when i quit my mail.app and start it again the mail gets connection again. So is there a problem when changing networks when the Mail.App is stil active?

That's just to bad, will it be solved in a future release of OSX?
I don't know... maybe Apple will force me migrating to Mavaricks.
it seems that although w'r using DNS, the outside ip gets remebered or the connection isn't closed down properly when putting the macbook to sleep.
I can try offcource to configure the outside LANip (Non dns) in my mail client.
    I will post with results..

  • Apple mail won't connect to Gmail server!

I am not sure exactly what has happened.  I have a year old MPB that is the glitchiest apple product I've had.  Mail slowly stopped connecting to the Gmail server and says my passwords are incorrect.  I have checked, rechecked, and even changed my passwords to ensure that the PW is not incorrect.  I have three gmail accounts and some of them worked up until today.  I cannot tell if this is a mac software issue or a gmail server issue.  I've been having some odd issues with my MBP so I would count that out as the culprit.  I double checked the files in Library/Preferences against an older backed up version and they seem to be intact.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Mine stopped wotking on the 9th, under the mail app on the left hand side, if you have triangles with ! marks in them, perform a left click and start "Mail Connection Doctor" This may help pinpoing the issue.
Mine is failing at trying to connect on port 143.
This worked for me, go the accounts settings window and in each gmail account enter the following info
    Advanced Tab
    IMAP Path Prefix enter [Gmail]
If you then tick "Use SSL" this should make the port 993
Authentication shold be set to "password"
Then save these settings, finally email is received, hope this helps.
Let is know how you get on.

  • How can I get 'Mac mail' to work with PC exchange server

My employers have just upgraded to a new Exchange server and now mail won't work on my mac. The only option I have been given is to use Outlook web access, but it is not ideal for my working needs. The sticking point is that mail wants to connect via IMAP, but the server isn't configured for this. I used to be set up as a POP3 account, but this is not longer an option with our administrators. Is there any way I can continue to use 'Mac Mail'?

  • Mail can't connect to isp server. provider says it's an internal issue

mail can't connect to isp server. provider says it's an internal issue, mail is set up corectly.

Are connecting exclusively through IMAP or through POP?   IMAP automatically stores all the e-mails on the server.
POP gets them onto your Mac.   The advantage of IMAP, unless you desire, you are not downloading all the attachments to your hard drive, and bandwidth issues of downloading slowing you down with lots of large attachments are avoided.   The other advantage with IMAP, you can try a web based e-mail to see if your e-mail program missed downloading everything.    http://www.mail2web.com/ is my favorite web based e-mail.  I recommend at least trying it to see if it will let you see your e-mail.  Any custom folders will be invisible, but at least anything in your inbox should be visible and usable.
Are you using any other e-mail software for forwarding, such as gmail?

Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
              •          Server name: imap.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 993
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
              •          Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 587
              •          SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.
    Thanks to dpepper...

  • Mac keeps trying to connect to a server when opening excel

i worked for a week at a production house and they had me log into their server to access files that we all used.  obviously i forgot to eject their server before i left and instead just closed my computer and left.  now, since Lion makes all documents that were left open restore automatically my mac keeps trying to load a spreadsheet that i was reading off the server but obviously i'm not connected to said server anymore.  and i won't ever again.
how can i stop my mac from trying to connect to this server?  also, is there a way to stop Lion from auto restoring?
    thanks, all!

Well, I was hoping that if you remove all traces of recently opened documents to resume and you disable the resume, then Excel would not try any longer to connect to the server.
One more question: is Excel trying to reach the server when you start your system or when you launch Excel?
If it happens at start up, then have a look, if Excel has been added to the start up items (System preferences -> accounts -> your account -> start up items) and remove it.
Quit Excel (with Option + Command + Q) if it is open and remove the loginwindow preferences: Navigate to Library > Preferences > ByHost > com.apple.loginwindow.[xxxxxxxxx].plist
The [xxxxxxxx] represent some interminable string of numbers and letters.
If it happens at launch time, move the Excel preference file to the Desktop before you launch Excel. The file is locate here:
    /Users/your user name/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Excel.plist.
If you keep your Library hidden, as it is by default, go to the System preference folder from the Finder menu: Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder (Or shift-cmd-G) and enter
    "/Users/your user name/Library/Preferences"
    Good luck

  • My Mac mail suddenly stopped working

My Mac mail suddenly stopped working. The last email I have is from 4:40 or so this morning and I know that I have email because I can get it via a webmail program. It stopped working on my iPhone 4 too. Any ideas? It's IMAP if that means anything. Thanks.

I'd recommend  also reposting in the Snow Leopard forum because Mail is part of SL If both sending and receiving is not working then contact your ISP and see if they have any known issues. If they don' t what I've found to work is removing the account in Mail and then recreating it.

  • Apple Mail has stopped talking to the server, or so it seem

My Apple Mail has stopped talking to the server (Mobile Me), or so it seems. I was sending a couple of attachments the other day and too late realised that they were huge. They were PDF's I'd done, and I hadn't checked the size, so I ended up with 32Mb of attachments on a single email.
This seemed to mess things up. I tried deleting the sending message from Mail as I couldn't seem to stop it sending, which I think I managed to do, but it kept reappearing in the drafts and deleted folders.
I can access mail fine from Mobile Me and have managed to send what I needed from there, but now Mail doesn't seem to connect to the server (I just get the wheel), and whilst its trying my other mail accounts, which are on another ISP, disconnect.
Mail is giving me an error message now when I try to quit: +"Some actions taken while the account "me.com" was offline could not be completed online"+. The additional info says that operation could not be completed: MFMessageErrorDomain error 1028
Can anyone point me in the right direction to resolve this?
    Many thanks...

    R,
Not looking the correct place. Home means to click on he Icon of House that represents your user account folder as found in the sidebar of every Finder window. Then in that User Library. You clicked on the hard drive icon, but then looked in the Library at its root level -- wrong Library.
Also can be written as ~/Library.

  • TS3276 the connec doctor sr but mac mail won't connect?

How do you connect to gmail in mac mail when the connection doctor says the connection was successful to the server but mac mail won't connect even after re-inputting the password?

mac mail won't connect to the Comcast POP or smpt servers
So your saying that you have comcast at home and it works fine from this machine?
If you mail works fine at home, then if it doesn't work on the road, it most likely isn't your machine.  It is some other problem:
    -- with the other network
-- perhaps comcast is preventing foreign mail from working.

  • Yahoo Cannot Get Mail. The connection to the server failed

iPhone 4s with latest version of iOS.
A few days ago my Yahoo Mail stopped connecting, and I started seeing the above noted error message (Cannot Get Mail. The connection to the server failed.)  While it won't retrieve messages, it will let me send.  So at least SMTP seems to be working OK.
I've tried deleting it and adding it back, but to no avail.  I've rebooted the phone.  I've and any combination of options found on these boards.  Yet, the problem persists.  Anyone experience something like this before?  If so, any fix for it?

I contacted Yahoo.  Gave them all the information.  They acknowledged that they are having an issue and that they are working to resolve it.
One temporary measure that does work with the Mail App.  Add the Yahoo account manually. In other words, click on Other (at the bottom of the list) instead of Yahoo when adding your account, and use these settings.
