Mac mail receives but doesn't send

Hello,
During iPhone setup I asked that my mac mail accound info be copied over. When using the mail program I can receive emails, so I think my info came over, but I can not send. I read about the port issue with some isp so I tried over the EDGE network and it still doesn't work. This is the message I get:
" sending the message content to the server failed "
Any ideas?

You are one up on me...you can receive. When I'm home, the internet and email gives me a message"Cannot get Mail, The connection to the server, "mail.earthlink.net" failed." I thought it was an issue with my earthlink account, but when I leave home the email and internet work. I have a wireless connection, the signal is full bars, I've had ATT for years and the phone works inside my house.
What else should I be checking. Between this and the fact I can't import my memos from my Palm, I'm getting frustrated. It doesn't seem to replace my PDA, which was my primary purpose for getting it (beside the fact it's so cool)!

  • HT1277 Mac Mail receiving but not sending. smtp not working

I have been using Mac Mail with my Gmail account without any trouble for the last few years and just for the last 2-3 weeks I cannot send any e-mails. I am receiving without any problems, but no matter what I do it won't send, not even an e-mail to myself. My Calendar is set up to send my notifications and those won't even go. I have verified my settings (time and time again), I deleted and reset-up my account, in the last two weeks I have done everything I can, but can't figure it out so I am getting kind of desperate. I am sure that it is something to do with smtp but all of my settings for that are right too (in accordance to the Gmail and Apple sites). What I have done is just read and responded to my e-mails (when I do it offline) and then I have to log into my gmail account and copy/paste ALL of my e-mails manually, which I am sure you can imagine is extremely inefficient. Thank you to anyone who can help!
Running Mac OS X 10.6.8 with Mail 4.5 and accessing Gmail

Here is a screen shot too, not that it says much, but this is what I always get, no matter the settings (since they are all correct! OH! I guess I should also mention that I currently live in Africa and that I am using my Blackberry Bold as a modem to get internet on my computer, but I have been doing that since last year and never had a problem until now.
Also, I did just very recently (as in a couple weeks ago), insert a new modem to my computer to try a second method of getting the internet on my computer other than my phone, and it didn't really work so I am back to just the phone again... would that simple installation have anything to do with Mail not sending e-mail? I can't imagine that it would, But I have seen stranger things.

  • Mail receives but won't send. Upgrade to Lion hasn't helped

Mail can send messages but is not receiving any.

Hi, once you have all the correct outgoing server and incoming server settings check your router.
I had the same issue and tried many times to change the settings in mail and still couldn't send.
View the router settings and check the devices, if your Macbook is listed as Unknown xx-xx-xx change its name to a single word e.g Macbook.
Go back to mail if it still doesn't work remove the account and add back.
This worked first time for me

  • HELP! Mail receives but will not send

Mail will receive but it will not send.
When I try to send I get the following pull down window.
"The sender address (sender name)@cox.net was rejected by the server smtp.west.cox.net"
Anyone have an idea why this is happening?
    Thanks

I have had this problem intermittently with my ISP (SBC).
Evidently at some point they upgraded security at their server so that the server rejects email addresses that it thinks are inauthentic to prevent Spammers from using these addresses -- all of my .mac email addresses were being rejected because SBC servers thought a SPAMMER was "impersonating" my computer to get through their server. I am sorry I can't explain this better.
It took quite a few phone calls to clear it up and I also had to move up the technical support food chain. Request a MAC technician and then keep requesting that person's supervisor.
All of my .mac email addresses had to be validated on their servers.

  • Imac mail receives, but won't send

I can receive from my acounts, but none will send.
When I use the exact same settings in Entourage it works fine...but imail should work, no?

Perhaps you need to recheck your settings to make sure they're configured correctly. This site show the proceedure quite clearly (with screen pics) http://www.cit.cornell.edu/helpdesk/mac/email/osxmailapp.html

  • Apple mail receives, but won't send

This is my last resort.  I've double-checked with my provider and all is ok on their end.  I have deleted settings and set them up as per their recommendations several times to no avail.  I can receive emails, but will not send and consistently get warnings about various things such as  the password is invalid, there's an invalid certificate or just that it can't connect.  The strange thing is, it all works fine on both my iPad and iPhone.
I've tried several searches on the community forum and noticed several problems that were similar.  I hope someone has an answer that relates to this problem in regard to Yosemite.
    Thanks (fingers crossed).

  • Mail receives but won't send. Why?

Error message says something to do with outgoing mail server (SMTP) having a problem or being incorrect. I have made no changes to settings nor have I upgraded or changed my Apple Mail.
Does this have anything to do with the discontinuation of MobileMe? My email address I'm using is [email protected] .
This problem was intermittent, but now it seems to be steady and continuous.

Hello Earnie, I believe it is MobileMe being discontinued.
Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
              •          Server name: imap.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 993
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
              •          Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 587
              •          SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.
    Thanks to dpepper...

  • I can receive emails but can't send them. Auto set up created mail account separate from account migrated from a PC. Migrated account receives but doesn't send; other account didn't work

Phoned internet provider, TPG & talked through resetting passwords then the migrated email temporarily allowed emails to send, then quit again, but still receives emails.
Why will my Mac receive emails but not send them? The mails settings for POP & SMTP are same.
Closed the original mail account on the PC but didn't help - had to reopen it to send this email.
Detail from Mail Connection Doctor on my MacBook Pro, under WROTE says:
    VIDL 437,
    then later quits.
Is this relevant? Does this mean anything?
I'm a bit technically challenged.Good at Adobe software but not mail, internet or hardware.  Has anyone fixed a similar problem?
    Theger.

  • Mail receives but can't send in new Mac Pro!

    Hi
I just received my Z0G1, MAC PRO. I bought AirPort Extreme but my Mac Pro and my old G4 are plugged in with an Ethernet cable because they don't have wireless cards yet. While my G4 can send
and receive mail with Apple Mail my new Pro can't send. Since I never had AirPort Extreme I probably messed up the settings which I found very confusing, or the Mail set-up in the new Mac Pro. I copied the Mail settings from my old G4 still no outgoing mail in the new Pro. Please help so I can send mail with my awesome Mac Pro. Thank you for all responses!
    W.W.

Strange coincidence but I just had this problem myself. I worked for hours yesterday to be able to connect to my internet providers SMTP server, to no avail. Today i called the provider and everything was exactly as they said it should be. The truly odd thing was that connecting to their server from another boot disk, with the exact same settings, it got through just fine.
Finally this morning, knowing that all settings and info in my account set up were correct, I opened Mail and the Connection Doctor window.
Someone said the definition of insanity was doing the same thing time and time again expecting a different result. I've found this is just not true concerning my computers.
In the Connection Doctor window, every time the account would show as Red again (not getting through), I kept hitting the "Check Again" button. On about the eighth attempt, of trying for at least two minutes each time, it finally got through and it's up and working again.
Why it finally succeeded then and not the many, many times I tried it this morning and yesterday, I don't have a clue. Demon possession is my best guess.
But if you're absolutely sure that your settings are correct give it a try. Keep hitting "Check again" and hopefully you'll get through a lot sooner than I did.
Update: Since the forums went down while I was writing this I have the opportunity to add more.
I just checked Mail again and noticed that yet once again I couldn't get through to that SMTP server. So once again I hit Check Again a few times, and it worked again. MobileMe seems to be balking a bit too.
Sure wish I knew what was up with this. Gmail works like a dream.

  • Mail receives but  will NOT send out

I've never had a problem but now the mail app for apple no longer sends. I get it fine, forwarded and synched to mobile me and gmail accounts fine. When I try to send out of the account I get the message "cannot send message using the server smtp.east.*$&.net When I click on "connection Doctor" Connection status-"mail was able to connect to the internet. Any ideas? thank you

It could be that your ISP wants you to use a specific outgoing mail server. Check with your ISP. Sometimes they will only allow you to use their outgoing mail server when you're on their network and not your own. For example, if you use Optimum Online they may only let you use mail.optonline.com for outgoing so you couldn't use mail.yourdomain.com.
They do this to cut down on people sending spam from their networks.

  • My iPad sent emails fine until I had a talk talk fibre router. Now it receives but doesn't send? Any ideas.

    Hi
I seem to have all the correct settings for sending email. It worked fine before I had a new fibre router from talk talk.  Any ideas. It's driving me mad!

You don't say who your email provider is.
Are you using talktalks email service? Or some other email provider?
Have you contacted talktalk to see if there are any outgoing mail server settings that need changing since the switch over?

when i go onto iPhoto and choose a photo to send via email, i click send and the photo is sent and received but doesn't appear in my email sent items ?

This is not the iPhoto forum. In any case in iPhoto>Preferences select Mail or whatever email program you are using to email as the desired choice. You are probably sending directly through iPhoto.
