Mac mail search function is not working. Any search term returns all records.

    hi eric. many thanks.
i will have to read these links closer but what i meant to say is that the hard drive space that was being taken up seemed like it suddenly jumped way up because i had just gotten through a process in the last month where i am storing all my My Documents data on my Mac Pro. i am doing this in order to decide whether i should just keep it ALL on my Mac Pro and use ChronoSync to sync /some/ of it to my MBP.
so if i look in the Documents folder on my Mac Pro i have a ton of folders that i have created with a ton of data. if i look in the Documents folder on my MBP there are NO folders that have data in them that i created. there are other folders such as folders that various software created but what i mean to point out is that there was a LOT of available space on my HD until recently.
i am wondering if there is some way that running the Mail re-index (it then ran some kind of "Importing" routine) or by syncing my Photostream to the MBP caused a huge jump in data on this drive. if it is the photostream sync i can just take this off or see if it will sync more selectively. if it is something to do with mac mail jumping in size i am not sure why this would happen or what to do about it.
    does that question make sense?
i mean, before i did these two operations my recollection is that i would have had 130 GB on the hard drive (really just guessing here) and now there is like 218 GB on the hard drive and i don't know where all this came from...

  • Mac Mail Search Not Working

Okay, among the LONG list of things not working since the update, is the Mac Mail search function.  I will type in a search for emails from someone (eg. my son, partner, BFF, etc. who email me all the time), and either the system can't find emails from him, can only find ones sent years ago, or produces a list that is not in newest to oldest order (dates all mixed up).
I really rely on my being able to use my mail easily for personal and work use.  It's really sad when my other mailbox (Outlook) is working better than mac mail.
    Any advice?

  • Mac Mail "Search" won't return any results

    Hi,
Mac Mail- OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
I'm having trouble with the search feature on my Mac Mail. I'm using an IMAP account with: Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Junk and trash mailboxes. I also have folders under the "On My Mac" section. When I click on a folder, either "Inbox" or a mailbox "On My Mac" and try and search for an email no results are returned even though there should be multiple hits. I see multiple emails from John Doe prior to entering John Doe in the search bar and no results are returned even when I switch the search criteria to either "From", "To" or "Any".
Also is there any way to search all folders in Mac Mail at once without having to click on each folder and search it individually?
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thank you
    T

First, take all the applicable steps in this support article that you haven't already taken. If the problem isn't solved that way, see below.
Restart the computer in safe mode. Certain caches maintained by the system will be rebuilt.
Safe mode is much slower to start up than normal. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
When the login screen appears, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and test. There's no need to log in while in safe mode.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.

  • HT2954 How to search the content in Mac mail system?

I receive a lot of emails each day, some of the are dumped in the inbox. It is natural to search them later by typing some keywords. But the search engine performance is very bad compared to the the one of Gmail. I typed the same words, Mac mail showed there is no results. But Gmail gave almost all of them.

Hi, for my money, Spotlight is the worst serch engine since "Don't Find this.app"
But, are there options showing for From, To, Content & such?

  • Mac Mail Version 6.0 (1486) has stopped recieving mesages regularly and the search doesn't work

Mac Mail Version 6.0 (1486) has stopped recieving mesages regularly and the search doesn't work.
Since installing Mountain Lion, Mail seems to be very unresponsive. I have mac mail running on an iMac (which works fine) and a 2012 MacbookPro which is the one having the issues with the Mail app. Both computers are running on Mountian Lion.
When I scroll up in Mail for instance, the frame rate drops to about 5 a second.
When I click on a message it doesn't display it in the preview pane. Which is very annoying!
But I can get around the issue by double clicking on a message and it opens up the message in a new window.
When I search for a message, nothing appears in the results. Even if Im searching for something that is defiently there, eg if I type in my name, you'd think some results would come up. But when I click on something else, the results dispaly for about half a second. Bizarre. Is anyone else having this problem?

  • Mac Mail AUTOCOMPLETE vs. SEARCH?

i am having fits with mac mail.
does anyone know if the SEARCH box uses the same information as the AUTOCOMPLETE?
i just tried to enter a person "giorgio" into an autocomplete to send them a mail and no autocomplete comes up. so then i go to the search box to enter this name and while no actual MAIL comes up (there should be i think at least in the On My Mac section) there IS an autocomplete for "From: Giogio Last Name").
is there some reason the search box finds a from and an autocomplete does not find the same name? also, does anyone know where the search box gets its information? right now when the search autocompletes it just autocompletes with the "From: Giorgio Last Name" and in order to try and grab the email i have to sort of hover midway so that search does not autocomplete and READ the email address it is showing before i make the selection and then manually type this into the To box in my email.
this is sort of inconvenient but also sort of confusing.

    hi barney.
thank you. this is very helpful. for some reason both of these seem to be acting regularly weird and i was not able to figure this out.
for some reason Mail Search does not seem to return /any/ mail results for this search even though the /name/ shows up in the "From" dialog here. do you have any reason why this would be the case or how i might investigate further? i mean, presumably if a result is showing up here then there is in fact an email in Mac Mail that came "From" this sender and this mail would currently exist in either an IMAP account or in the ON MY MAC section is that right?
i am having a hard time figuring out how to research this since if the name shows up in the mail search but i don't see it in the search results - - hmmm - i guess i should manually search in the On My Mac section and in the IMAP inbox by sorting by from sender and alphabetically looking up this sender i guess? then i can provide more info on this?
also, same for the To autocomplete. i am almost positive that i have sent mail to this sender from my Mac Pro but i can check this easily by looking in the Window > Previous Recipients and manually looking up the name here, yes?
the search in particular has not been working well and i recently took online advice to follow a tech article about deleting some Mail folder file and rebuilding the index but this does not seem to be working AFAIK. seems odd to get a mail search result NAME but no actual MAIL showing up...

  • Search in Mac Mail not working or working very poorly

    Just found this on MacRumors
Post this into Terminal to enable indexing. Why it gets turned off I don't know. I think there used to be a button for it in Spotlight prefs which isn't there now. I remember turning it off once as it seemed to interfere with the smoothness of the computer. If you had turned it off when you upgraded to the OS version where the enable indexing button is no longer there, it will stay off.
So to turn it on: enter this into terminal and enter your password.
    sudo mdutil -E -i on /
It enables indexing again and fixes the dreadful search function in Mac mail.
    Nige

You are confusing Google (or other internet) searches with knowledge. It's possible to find that just about anything is true with the right search.
Further, if you feel that finding someone else who said that Spotlight indexing was turned off means that your Spotlight indexing must be turned off is completely illogical. Was your indexing actually turned off? Well, we'll never know now, if you didn't check it before.
What the command you used does is: 1) erase the old Spotlight index, forcing it to be recreated, and 2) make sure indexing is turned on. Most likely your old index was damaged, so recreating it fixed your problems.

  • My mac mail will not search mail anymore and doesn't load attachments anymore

Does anyone know why this would be happening?
My mac mail will not search mail anymore and doesn't load attachments most of the time.  When I enter some text in the search box no results come up and I know there are messages that contain the phrase that I've entered.
Also about 3 weeks ago attachments only get loaded about 1/4 of the way - if that.  So I have to log onto my web based mail program from the host and retrieve attachements or check the messgae with my iphone.
Please - does anyone know how to fix this?

I figureed out that spotlight was turned off via terminal -  I shut it off to unmount a disk (which didn't work anyways)
    sudo mdutil -a -i on
that's the termianl command to turn spotlight back on.  As far as my attachments not fully loading in mac mail on my iMac that still baffles me.

  • Search Question for Lion Mac Mail

In recent weeks, I've figured out most of the thorny issues with Lion Mac Mail, but maybe someone can help me with this one:
When I search "Sent Mail', the results come back with my name showcased in bold (which serves no purpose, I mean I'm searching from my Sent folder, so we can assume they're all from me). In earlier versions, however, the name of the recipient would be showcased. Much more useful.
Let me give you an example. I'm trying to find emails where I mentioned a Golden Spatula. I know I wrote to several people about this sacred utensil. Okay, in the past, the search engine would list all the emails where this term arises, and they would be distinguished by who I sent them to.
Now, I see a list of all the emails, but my name in bold is the only term I can quickly peruse.
Know what I'm talking about? Any suggestions?
    Thanks.....T

If no one answers here please post in the Lion Forum forum, because Mail is considered part of OS X that is good place to look too. Also look to your right under More Like This to see if there are any answers there.

  • I suddenly cannot search my Address Book (Contacts) in Mac Mail.  Seems to be "stuck" on one contact

I suddenly cannot search my Mac Mail Contacts.  Normally, when I type in a name, it immediately comes right up to that contact.  Only way I can see a particular contact I want is to double click on that name.  I want to be able to see it to the right of the list of all my contacts on the left.  Thanks in advance for your help.  I've tried quitting the application, but it's not helping.  I've also checked and all my Software Updates are up to date.

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
Not exactly clear, but in Address Books tool bar, is Groups & Names shown, or just Names?

  • I am missing all emails two weeks old or older in my mac mail. This happens on a continuous basis. I cannot find them by search or any archived method. Can someone please help me stop this from happening?

Missing emails of two weeks old and older in mac mail.

Im really good at programming but really suck at algorithms
    >If your are 'really good' at programming, you will be able to solve this problem. Because, it has nothing to do with algorithm.

  • Mac Mail: How do I remove deleted emails' subject history from mailbox search

Even though the emails are long deleted (& deleted from trash) when I enter in the mail search field old email subjects still appear?
Is there a way to stop this happening?

    Hi there,
You may need to rebuild the mailbox in order to update the search index. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • How can I keep just one of two accounts offline in Mac Mail?

I recently switched from Comcast to Cox Cable. Cox has a known issue with push notifications and email doesn't show up at regular intervals. You have to go offline and back on or quit Mail and then open it again to see new messages. It's a pain but it works.
I still have my Comcast email account enabled on Mac Mail because I need access to old emails and if I disable it (via Preferences), it disappears. I want to take it offline but clicking on the Comcast account and "take comcast.net offline" always takes my Cox account offline as well. I can't get them to both stay online because the Comcast account hangs when it can't connect to Comcast. This really exacerbates the already annoying issue of having to take Cox offline and back on.
I tried going into the Comcast account via Preferences and unchecking "include when automatically checking for new messages" but when I did so, it kept the Cox account from receiving any messages at all (I confirmed this by checking webmail, and by toggling it on and off to see what happened).
I need some solution that allows me to see the comcast account in mail without having it be active in any way. I have other mailboxes archived but that process doesn't offer the search capability that I need.

Aha! I have been doing just that. However, what has been tripping me up is that I am also used to clicking the Go Online/Go Offline toggle button on the top menu bar when I manually check for messages on Cox. Apparently when you take one inbox offline, that button switches to Off even though the other inbox is still online. If I just ignore that button and go on or off via the cox mailbox listing, it keeps comcast from being reactivated.
Thanks so much for helping me think this through.
Edited to add: I removed that dang button from my menu so I can stop clicking it.

  • MacBook Pro 10.4.9 Mail Search option not working!

When a key word or email address is entered into the search pain of mac mail, it produces 0 results every time, even when I have an email open containing the exact key word or email address.
Another thread suggested running a downloadable Etresoft report to help folks in the Apple Community answer questions.  I am a new Mac user, so I really need baby steps to fix this issue.  Being able to search my email is critical to my work performance and the small company I work for.

Verizon Wireless does not now offer—and has not historically offered—the Palm Treo 680. The Treo 680 is a GSM device, and not compatible with the Verizon network. Verizon currently offers the Palm 700p and the 700wx, and has previously offered various Palm and Windows Mobile devices beginning with the Palm Treo 600.
The anomalies you see are likely the result of issues with iSync and the iSync Palm conduit, and not with the device itself. With an advanced Palm device such as any Treo beyond the 600, you should instead opt to use either…
    • the Missing Sync for Palm OS, or
    • the Missing Sync for Windows Mobile
…selecting whichever one supports the operating system of your particular Treo. In your case with a Treo 680, that's the Missing Sync for Palm OS.
