Mac Mail Security
I use Mac Mail with Gmail. I have a bunch of mailboxes set up within Mac Mail to organize my email. They appear under the "On My Mac" section on the left side of the Mac Mail screen. I assume this means that all of my email content is stored on my Mac. Once in a while I access Gmail via the web, but it's only to send a short note. I have no folders (i.e., labels) with email content in the Gmail web environment.
From a security and privacy perspective, is it better to store all my mailboxes and email content on my Mac? Or is it better to store everything in the Gmail web environment?
If it is better to store everything locally on my Mac, what are the best security practices for Mac Mail. Other than having a strong password, what else should I do for good security?

I am experiencing the same thing and it has just started in the last few weeks also. I get the mailer-daemon messages telling me I have had my emails rejected to people that I don't even know nor do I have anything to do with the message being rejected.
I am concerned that my computer has somehow been compromised but do not know whether or not this is the case.
The issue is how do we try to stop this - I read elsewhere that the email password needs to be changed but I am not sure if this is actually going to do anything at all.
Anyone have a suggestion to stop this?

Possible Mac Mail Security Issue
A couple of times each week, I'm receiving returned e-mail messages that describe mail that I did not actually send. The "undeliverable" addresses in the Mailer-Daemon notifications are unfamiliar and involve a different overseas address for each notification.
Every aspect of the computer runs fine. in four years of being a devout Mac convert, I have not seen this type of problem until the past few weeks. So from my standpoint, the false notifications are just a minor annoyance. I've been deleting them. But, I wonder if there could there be a security issue or some other problem?

There have been a couple of threads on this now closed without a solution. I discovered how a somewhat tedious way to get an animated gif into a mac mail msg while seeing the animation in action.
I used iWeb to create a blank white pate. I then inserted the animated gif. I posted the page to my website. I placed a bookmark in Safari for this website. Now, when i want to send an email with this animated gif as a signature, I navigate to my website page in Safari, type ⌘I, and this brings up a blank email in MacMail with gif animating. Then just complete your message.JT,
Thanks for the post. I don't pretend to be a guru. It appears from the other posts that Apple chose to prevent animated gifs from animating in Mac Mail to enhance security. I don't know much about making the gifs. Here's the animated gif on the web page. It's of a Toyota FJ Cruiser.

How can I use Mac Mail to send a delayed mail?
I am trying to send a delayed email, meaning the email is not sent immediately
when the send button is pressed but at a pre-determined time.
I have looked through Google, tried different third party scripts available, including
Mail Scripts 2.10.3 by Andreas Amann, but none is supported under Mac OS X Lion.
I believe Mac Mail itself does not support this feature (to my disappointment),
but I read about using iCal and Automator to do my intended purpose.
However, I am not familiar with script-writing. If someone can provide me a
step-by-step procedure OR give me another way to do my intended purpose,
it will be highly appreciated.I opened Airport Utility today and it appears to have been simplified to the point where you can't do much with it these days.

You can put time controls onto the offending addresses.
But if the hackers know anything at all they know how to access the MAC address of the computer and change it.. so the effectiveness of this is limited.
Change the current setup and password.. You must use WPA2 Personal and I recommend you use a pure alphanumeric password, mix case and numbers of 20 characters or more for your situation.. do not give that password to anyone.. protect the admin password of the TC itself equally well but with a different password. And protect the physical access to the TC from anyone in your home.. because the fact is all security on the TC is an illusion if the TC has open access.

So anyone can discover your passwords without your knowledge and leave no trace on your system.
If you make no progress.. I suggest replacement of the TC as the main router of your network.. you need something with controls.. and even better controls that allow you to block people.
The favourite one now is older Netgear WNDR3800 . .you might need to buy from ebay although a few new ones are still around.. alternatively the WNDRMACv2 is simply the same hardware in a white box.. instead of black.

Using a POP mail account in mac mail
My friend has an AT&T sbcglobal POP mail account he has added to his mac mail app. Since it is POP mail it is not always received in his mac mail box if AT&T Yahoo account receives it first. I guess he can prevent the Yahoo mail box from downloading the messages if he signs out of the Yahoo account.But he also has an iPhone. So will he still have the race problem between the computer & the iPhone on which gets the mail first?

I assume the settings you are refering to gives that delay for marking the messages as read when highlighted for that period of time. Probably for scrolling through the list without changing the unread status. Lion doesn't have that selection, so I can't test that at the moment. -
Mac Mail is continuously adjusting the "allow insecure authorization" option on it's own
I've already lost 3 clients due to a lack of timely email response, and I had no idea why Mac Mail was having issues connecting to my email server. I've spoken at length with my web hosting support, and it turns out the options in Mac Mail for "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" and "Allow insecure authentication" are new with Yosemite, in both the incoming and outgoing settings (see below).
Well it turns out the only way for me to be able to even use Mac Mail and have it connect to my email server, I have to have "Automatically..." unchecked, and "Allow insecure..." checked in each and every one of the accounts. I completely hate the idea of having to have anything "insecure" associated with my email, but it's the ONLY way I can get it to function properly, and I don't have the time to integrate everything to another email program at the moment. Not only is this a huge security risk in general, but the program will continuously uncheck the "Allow insecure authentication" option entirely ON IT'S OWN about every 20-30 minutes or so, completely jam up all communication I'm working on, require me to go back through and repeat the same tedious process for each and every one of the accounts, and then ALSO have to totally shut the program down and reopen it for the settings to take effect. In fact, the second of the two images seen above JUST unchecked the "Allow insecure authentication" box between the time it took me to start this post and take the screen shot!!
Something HAS TO BE FIXED with this or it could be a huge issue in a lot of ways. I'm planning on dropping the whole program altogether just as soon as I have the time to properly migrate all of my email setup to another program (which I'm looking forward to less than I would a root canal), but for now I'm just hoping and praying I make it that far without either a major security breach or losing any more clientele. As is, I've lost three clients in just the last week from not being able to correspond on tight deadlines.
Downgrade, in all meanings of the term...Since you are doing a workaround, try deselecting use SSL.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Need reference/tutorial about iDisk (especially .Mac mail) access by iPhone

I have started getting quite interested in using my .Mac subscription, especially the iDisk online storage capabilities while being on the road with my MBP.
HOWEVER, I am also intrigued with accessing iDisk and .Mac Mail from my iPhone.
1. That's where I am having problem number one: seems that i cannot use my iPhone to access anything I put into iDisk's folders from my MBP. I put files into iDisk on my desktop, check if same files are on iDisk by reaching .Mac online, but I do not see anything on my iPhone while accessing iDisk from it. I do see the same iDisk folders as i see on my desktop Documents, etc..), but with no data inside.
My .Mac WebGallery/Albums work well from my iPhone.
2. Similar problem with Mail. Everything is OK - send receive - as far as .Mac Mail goes, if reached from my laptop. Not so with the iPhone: even though I can send/receive from .Mac Mail from my iPhone, and I do see .Mac Mail's mail boxes, and message insides, I cannot access attachments that i might have sent from Mail on my MBP or from .Mac Mail from my MBP.
I hope this is not too complicated a request for assistance: I have done well so far with most of the iPhone amzingly well integrated capabilities, but I am stumped here re: iPhone access to .Mac's Mail and iDisk.

Roger TThanks, Zerimar. Indeed, somewhat useless. Not a big deal, but the rest of the interface between my MBP and the iPhone, as well as the iPhone design itself, are quite wonderful. I keep trying to detect some inadequacies in that interface. Not too many!
Seems that Apple designed the iPhone to purposefully limit its online capabilities (security issues, or prevention of unnecessary troubleshooting issues, just like in the case on unlocking phones!)

Mac mail not showing jpg attachments after yosemite install
I use Mac Mail and have recently upgraded to Yosemite.
Since upgrading I can no longer view jpg images sent by email from my security camera system. They used to be shown within the message, but since the upgrade to Yosemite they're not shown in the message anymore (well, they are shown in about 1% of messages), even the attachment won't open after saving to desktop.
When I try opening the attachment after I have saved it, it says it may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn't recognize.
I can view these images when using outlook on my mac, but preferred the Mail app, as it was easier to view the images in Mail.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?I have the exact same issue.

Why are my weblinks not live in Mac Mail?
I have just switched from using Safari as my default browser in Mac OSX 10.7.3. to FireFox 4.0.1 because both version 10.0 and the beta 11.0 would not allow the plug-in for multiple tool-bars which you can have in 4.0.1.
Now I am finding that when I want to attach a link of a website to an email in Mac Mail the link is dead and cannot be used to go straight to the website. In Safari I could do this.
Is this a bug or does it require another plug-in or fix? I do a lot of attachments that require links and they need to be live for ease. This could force me back to Safari if I cant get it sorted.
Does anyone have or has had the same problem and how did they solve this?What plugin is it that you are trying to use in firefox that won't work with Firefox 11? Using firefox 4 is no longer supported and opens you to major security issues.

Try to start Firefox in [[Safe mode|Safe mode]]. This mode disables all extensions, user customizations, hardware acceleration, etc. temporarily for diagnostic and troubleshooting. If Firefox works fine in Safe Mode, then this is likely an add-on issue. Restart Firefox in normal mode, then type "About:addons" (without the quotes) in the address bar. Disable your extensions one by one, restarting Firefox between each one, until you find the trouble maker. Once you do, you can disable that add-on and report the issue to that add-on's developer. -
Is there a problem with .mac mail?
I have been unable to access my .mac mail since earlier last evening using both the Mail application or via webmail. When attempting to check mail from the Mail application I get the password rejected prompt and re-enter my password. This does nothing other than re-prompt me to enter my password again.

I have tried using two different Macs, one i Book G4 running 10.3.9 and a iMac G4 using 10.4.6. I have tried using two different ISPs. No luck.
The dotmac support website claims nothing is wrong with the system. And yet, clearly something is amiss. Any ideas anyone?Yes, this happened at home and my office. I have tried both Airport and direct ethernet connection at home and my connection at work is via ethernet. The work computer is running Tiger; the home computer is on Panther. The work computer connects through a university ISP; home computer via Road Runner (Time Warner cable). The work computer had not been touched in about a week before this morning and worked fine a week ago. All I have done on the home computer is download the most recent security update. I have had no problem with either computer at either location subsequent to last evening. So basically I had email access yesterday at approximately 2 PM then I cam home approximately 8 PM and have subsequently been unable to access mail from either computer since then. No settings were manually changed on either computer during that period, I didn't change anything about my connections to the internet on either computer, etc. My .mac account is paid through March of next year, so I can rule out the old forgot to pay the bill business. I am totally perplexed.

I've had the same e-mail address for over twelve years and I'd never been hacked (or whatever it's called when everyone in your address book receives spam from you) until six months ago, when I bought a Macbook Pro and started using Mac Mail. Since then, my e-mail has been hacked five times. Each time, I've immediately changed my password to at least twenty random symbols, numbers, and upper and lowercase letters. It makes no difference; the e-mail address I use with Mac Mail still spams all and sundry.
What is going on? Is the culprit the Mac Mail program or could the computer itself be compromised? I bought the Mac with Windows without Outlook because Mac Mail seemed like a comparable substitute. Now I'm tempted to purchase the Outlook add-on to see if I still get hacked using it. What else can I do? No other family members (all on Dells or Acers) are having this problem and Verizon says the connection is secure. Any ideas are appreciated!when everyone in your address book receives spam from you
This is most often caused by someone else's computer getting hacked, getting their Address Book compromised, and disclosing your email Address.
The spammer then sends FAKE emails, tagged with your email address as the sender.
In this case, NOTHING about your Mac, or your email account has been compromised at all. Someone's compromised computer is sending spam and inserting your email address in the Sender field.
I had this experience, and it turned out to be a computer of someone I had bought something from on eBay, years before, had their computer hacked. My address was in their Address Book, so his computer sent out emails with my name as Sender.
If you can get a receiver to show full headers, then cut-and-paste that text into a new email and send it to you, that can be analyzed to determine the actual sender.
Or a computer-savvy friend can look at the full headers and see who the actual sender is. -
Mac mail crashing when trying to open stationery..never had problem before
I sent a birthday card using an Equinux template with photo added a few days ago and now when I try to access stationery in MAC mail, it crashes. I can send crash log if needed. I have tried most things found in previous discussions,without luck and am very frustrated. Have several business letter templates that I must access. Help please. Using Safari 5.0.6

My mac mail recently has been giving me the "this message contains unloaded images" every time I get an email unless it is just text. I haven't changed any preferences or security of any kind. Does anyone else have this problem?
I don't think it's a problem, because those images are probably from an HTML email message and your Preferences are probably set not to load them when opening a message. If that's the case, there should be a button at the top right of the message window to load those images.
Also, are you still running 10.4.7 as your profile states? If so, you need to upgrade to 10.4.11 immediately and update your profile; this will fix a number of bugs an security vulnerabilities, as well as letting you run the latest version of Safari.

Does Mountain Lion scan incoming email in Mac Mail?
I've been using Avast for my Mac but I had to turn off the Mail Shield in order to recieve mail. I was wondering if Mountain Lion has any security measures for Mac Mail? Does it scan incomging email?

Thanks!Technically, it sort of scans e-mail attachments. If you receive something that can be executed on a Mac - an application, a Unix shell script, etc - then it will be scanned when you try to open it. If it is one of a few known Mac trojans, you will be prevented from opening it. If it is Windows malware of some kind, you won't be able to open it, but you also won't be warned either.

Missing speaker icon in list view in iTunes for Windows
