Mac making a humming noise

This has just started today; it is not as noisy as my old Windows PC, but still annoying - especially as it was almost completely silent when I first got it. I've searched all the threads on this - some say take it back to the shop (a real pain when you do not own a car!); others say 'clean the fans'. What fans? Where are these? My Mac is a completely sealed unit; I cannot see any fans anywhere. I thought perhaps it was making the noise while backing up, but there is no back-up going on & the noise is still there. It is only a few months old - bought it in July 2012; the OS is Lion 10.7.5.
Thanks.

Reset the SMC:
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Run the Apple hardware test to see if it points out any hardware issues. Depending where you live, the local Apple store may provide on-sight service (this can vary by country and distance from store).

  • HP laserJet 5200dtn making buzzing/humming noise after printing

    Hi,
We have about three of these units in our office and one of them has recently began to make a loud buzzing/humming noise during and after printing a document. THe noise last about 5-10 seconds after the print job completes.  I can also make the printer buzz by removing the duplexer and puting it back in. The printer seems to load and then the buzz noise happens, again for about 5 seconds. I am aware of normal noise from these printers and this buzz is not normal.
This noise gets louder as the day goes on. Could this be a fan motor going bad?  We need to do somthing to get it quieter.
    Any help or suggestions?
    Thanks

  • Why is my mac making a strange noise?

A couple of hours ago my mac started making a really weird noise.. it kind of sounds like a lawn mower.. It fades away every so often and then comes back...
I think it might be the fan.. but my mac isn't hot underneath... please help!!

The only noise maker on a rertina MBP is the fan.  Since you do not have a pentalobe driver that allows you to take the bottom plate off, bring the MBP into an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.
    Ciao.

  • Humming noise in new MBP

Well, the latest firmware fixed the trackpad issues that I was having. Way cool!
Now yesterday, a new problem developed which I wondered if anyone else had experienced. Yesterday, when returning to my desk, I realised that my MBP was making a humming noise. It is not super loud and if I had bad hearing, I probably wouldn't notice it. So instead of being super quiet and the occasional clicking of the hard drive, I have a continuous low level humming noise. My guess is that it is fan noise.
Has any experienced this? It is a little obnoxious and I can live with it if need be, so what would help is whether any of you would advise that I pursue sorting this out or just living with it!

Mine has had the exact same issue for 3 weeks now. Moving my left hand around on the palm rest causes the right palm rest (above the hard drive) to buzz intermittently, depending on the pressure and position of my left hand.
I've completely uninstalled and re-installed the HD (including mounting screws) but no luck. Since the buzz appears whenever my left hand applies pressure to the palm rest, I tried re-seating the battery, but no luck either.
The buzz disappears if I press down on the right palm rest. I think it's something with the rigid construction of the unibody and how uneven pressure on the palm rests changes the vibration/sound dampening qualities of the hard drive bay.
Other than this my MBP is perfect. The "Genius Bar" might be of help, but I'm skeptical since the buzz is very faint and intermittent. All the noise in the Apple Store will probably make the impossible to hear what I'm describing to them...
Did anyone have any luck or self-fix solutions for this?

  • Mac Pro 8-core Power Supply Making Humming Noise That Comes And Goes

This is in reference to a Mac Pro 3,1 8-core purchased around Feb 2008.
Lately, I've noticed a strange noise coming from my power supply that sounds like the noise a refrigerator radiator makes. It's a humming noise that rapidly comes and goes, constantly.
The power supply fan speed is running at 599rpm
I'm not sure if the problem could've been caused by adding additional ram (12GB, OWC) or an additional HDD (3rd HDD, WD), but I didn't really notice the noise until after adding these components.
What could be the cause of this problem? What are my repair options if necessary (without Apple Care)?
    Thanks in advance.

I know for a fact it is not any of my hard drives because the noise is becoming more frequent no matter what hard drive I use, I actually have a 1.5tb, a 1tb, two 500gb and two 320gb drives, I have set an appointment to take my system in and have it tested, it is starting to crash 5-6 times a day. I can not get a lot of work done with this annoying spinning noise and the shutting down. Thank god for my Apple care, and I have visited various forums that lead me to believe its the power supply going out, with the symptoms it is having. This article and others like it explain what to look for when a power supply is going bad.

  • My Mac Pro Early 2008 is making a cricket noise

    Hi all,
My computer started making an annoying noise. It's exactly the same like a cricket. I removed hard drives, SSD, CD-ROMs and turned on the computer again but the noise is always present. If you scroll down with your mouse, it increases the noise, if you stop doing things it kinda goes down in intensity but it's still present. Does anybody know what is the reason? I am going to replace the PRAM battery, maybe it's the reason. I also reseted the PRAM but it didn't work.
I would appreciate your feedback. Thanks in advance.
    David

Honestly, I would first try to just clean off the fans of any dust (a slighlty damp paper towel will work fine).  If they have much dust or dirt on the blades, that can throw off the balance enough a fan starts to chirp.  But the fan itself is still fine.
If you do need a replacement fan, there are lots of places online to get them - amazon, ebay, http://www.macpartsonline.com, http://www.powerbookmedic.com (despite the name of that last one, they do sell Mac Pro parts too).

Recently my mac has been making a clicking noise and will not stop, it is extremely irritating. It is coming from the center of the computer, like where the screen connects to the keypad. any idea what is going on or how to stop it?

Possibly the hard drive is failing. Make a backup ASAP.

Recently my mac has started making faint clicking noises just like a fan catching against something, it is only faint but loud enough to hear. any suggestions please

While it could be a cooling fan, a noise like that is usually a sign of a dying hard drive. Back up everything immediately. Make immediate backups of any new documents you create after the full backup.

  • Imac hard drive making low humming type of noise?

I have an imac that is about a year old. I don't run a lot of stuff at one time usually. Internet, email. I do movie editing at times but not when this problem appears.
My wife tells me I have sensitive ears so maybe I'm blowing this out of proportion. But I've noticed for the past 3 to 4 weeks that, randomly, the imac will make a low humming noise. The noise isn't constant (i.e. one noise that keeps going). It's more of an up and down sort of noise (whir-silence-whir-silence-whir, etc.). I notice the heck out of it to the point that it's giving me a headache. Wife said she doesn't really notice it.
It hasn't done this all the time or I would have noticed it. And it doesn't do it all the time but I can't point to anything I'm doing differently to cause it.
Is this a sign that the hard drive may be going bad? I've been computing for about 20 years and I've never had a hard drive fail. Not sure what signs/sounds to look for. Imac seems to be working flawlessly otherwise.
    Thanks much.

Thanks to you both for the responses.
I installed techtool, and then downloaded the current version, ran everything but surface scan (default setting is not to do this) and everything passed. I will probably do the surface scan overnight as I'm assuming that takes time. But, I guess it's a good sign that everything passed, though it leaves me wondering what all the humming is.
Incidentally, it's NOT doing it right now, so it does turn off/on.
    Again, thanks.

  • PPC Mac G4-Front Speaker Humming Noise

Yesterday I turned the CPU on as usual and then I started to hear a "buzz humming noise" coming out from the front speaker. I disconnected all my external devices, fix the permissions, Zap the Pram and the buzz continued for the entire day and through the night. I thought the front speaker had give up on me so I booked at the Genius Bar to replace it this morning. Shut down the CPU last night. Turned it back on this morning and the "buzz humming noise" totally disappear, vanish! I canceled my reservation at the "Genius Bar" but the whole issue got me a little concerned as to how that happened and then all of the sudden it vanished. That makes me think of a spyware or a security issue if anyone can provoke such a thing from any external meanings. Anyone have any thoughts on this? ...Or experienced such an issue similar to this one? Thanks!

Hi everyone I just thought to come back here and answer to my own question since I found the bug that caused the humming noise on the CPU front speaker after all this time. It was that little Google Application called: "Google Notifier Appl." If you are having the same problem, delete that application. There is a bug there that interferes with the Computer Sound Board causing a terrible humming noise enough to annoy "da heck" of anyone. I Hope that helps!

  • T3000 Speakers Making Humming Noise

I purchased a set of T3000 speakers the first part of December 2005. I was very pleased with them until recently. They now emit a humming noise that is proportional to the speaker volume (...if the speaker volume is turned up, the humming noise becomes louder; if the speaker volume is turned down, the humming noise becomes less). The noise makes it so nothing can be heard over the humming. The humming still exists with my computer powered off. I've also tried moving wires & cables to see if that would eliminate any interference, but that has no effect. Has anyone else had this problem?
I sent an email to Creative (now over a couple days ago) describing the problem/failure of these speakers, and inquired what I need to do to get warranty service. I received an automatic reply which stated their average response time is 1-2 working days. Has anyone else had warranty service done, and what was your experience?
    Thanks for your help!

  • MAC OS X humming...

My Mac Desktop is making a light humming noise when I turn it on. Sometimes I can get it to stop by turning my MAC off, waiting and then turning back it on. Sometimes, it will stop humming after about 10 minutes.  I have cleaned my desktop off so that it does not have a bunch of things to open when I turn it on. It's about 3 or 4 years old which I know makes it a fossil in computer years...If I can't get the noise to stop, I just turn it off and don't get it on it all. but, this is an issue b/c this is my work computer.
Questions for MAC experts: can I continue to work on my MAC? Or will something burn out on it, like a fan? Can I take it to a local MAC repair shop and have this issue fixed?
I bought a good back up hard drive from Other World Computers (OWC) and it will arrive next week...plan on putting my most important documents on it.
My desktop is a MAC OS X, 10.5.8
    Thanks in advance for advice!

I would skip your MAC repair shop.

  • Annoying Humming Noise

I have a 2008 Mac Pro that has been making an annoying humming noise for a long time now. It didn't make this noise when I bought it and was whisper quiet for most of the first year. I have had all the fans and the power supply replaced under Apple Care, but it is still making the noise. It is a low, oooooWAAAAAAA, oooooWAAAAAA, ooooWAAAA sound that goes on at a steady rhythm all day. The noise did change somewhat in quality after the PSU was replaced, but no change with the fans. I have tried SMC fan control to change fan speed but that hasn't help other than to drown the noise out with fan noise. In a quiet room it is really annoying, but I am afraid if I took it in at this point they wouldn't hear the sound, as the tech guy couldn't hear it when he came out (it is more noticeable sitting at the level of the computer than standing above it). It can also be intermittent with it being barely audible at times to it being fairly obvious.
It gets louder based on the number of hard drives I put in the unit: less drives equal less noise, and the noise can get louder when I'm burning a DVD, though this is not the noise from the graphics card fan firing up, but a different noise that can be heard in background. It seems to be coming from the power supply or power supply fan.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks to everyone who responded. For anyone else who might have this problem, I found what may be a solution. I read somewhere else that this noise is caused by the drive sleds vibrating against the metal on top of the drive bays. I am sorry I can't find the page, but what this guy advised is to remove the sleds from the drives and bend them slightly downward over the side of your desk so that when you insert them back in, there should be about a millimeter of black space between the back of the sled and the metal above where they slide in. Just a tiny bend seems to suffice.I did this to all 4 drive sleds and the noise has been reduced by over 90 percent. As Kappy advised here if your sleds don't have rubber grommets around the screws that would very likely make this problem worse as well.
    Hope this helps.

  • HT3964 How do I stop my Macbook from overheating and making a fan noise?

My Macbook Pro 17 Inch keeps overheating and making a fan noise after I use it for... say... an hour.
I use Windows on my Macbook, is this related to my problem? If not, do I need to get my fan replaced?
It gets annoying whenever I play a game, and then suddenly my Mac goes to sleep for no reason (probably due to overheating).
The fan noise is kept to a minimal when I use a web browser, or listen to music, but it goes up when I start an application.

Since overheating is something the computer tries to prevent, it will shut down if the temps get too hot, thus your experience is not overheating.
You can have a look at Activity Monitor (Menu Bar > View > Show All Processes) and then sort by CPU to see what the culprit is during downloading.
A hot Mac is not that big of a problem, the fan takes care of the heat and if you do not mind the noise, then that is it.
