Mac Mini 2.7 i7, fan runs every time video is streamed

I'm on my third Mac Mini and I love the form/function of the overall design.   I decided to treat myself to the MAX version with the 2.7GHz i7 intel processor.  Unlike the previous versions I've owned the fan keeps coming on whenever video is played.   Run an ESPN3 program, fan starts to run in about 1//2 hour.   Use Handbrake to change a file or acquire something from a disk and the fan starts in about 5 minutes (or less).   Watch a DVD and the fan starts in about 10 minutes.   Is there a way to turn down the speed of the chip to reduce the need for the fan (it is a VERY speedy little thing)?   I've looked at the energy savings settings but nothing seems to address dialing it down, etc.
Yes, running all updated software and the unit is in a space with good airflow, I've even raised it off of the desk a bit with some cork pads on the corners.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the feedback.
I appreciate that the health of the Mac Mini may not be in question.  It does prevent it's use for some things given the fan volume and it definitely requires the volume for the sound to be turned up significantly to hear dialog, etc.  Bottom line, I would not have bought "the best one" if I had known it had distractions that the "old ones" or the "less than" models don't have.  Speed isn't everything, especially when you are watching a TV show on ABC.com

  • Mac Mini locks up and fan runs on high

I just bought a new (refurbished) 2012 Mac Mini from Apple.  It's the i7 quad 2.3 version.
I haven't done any power using at all.  I bought it to start some home recording as a musician.
I've owned it a week as of today and it's locked up twice with the spinning ball of death while doing nothing.  Both times I only noticed after hearing the fan running really loudly for awhile.  It wasn't being used either time, just sitting idle.  I heard the fan, walked over and tried to click on something with the mouse and the SPBOD popped up and stayed for 20+ minutes.  Finally just had to shut it down with the power button.
I can't keep this thing if this is going to be a weekly occurrence.  Does it sound like a defective unit?
It has the server option which I stupidly clicked on and configured when setting it up.  I don't need a server and didn't really know why I activated it.  Now as I understand it, there's no way to "undo" it or remove the software easily.  Could the server app be the issue?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • I installed Mountain Lion on my one-year-old MacBook Pro and now the fan runs every time I use it.  That very seldom happened before.  Does Mtn Lion ,ake it work harder?  If so, can I go back to the old OS for some peace and quiet?

This is my first time trying to post a question so I'm not sure I did it correctly...

Hi JoeyR.  Well, according to this link at the Apple Store, OS X Moutain Lion became available in July and I downloaded it for $19.99.  I figured I would do that before renewing my Norton security SW.  Are we talking about the same thing?

  • On the mac mini 2011 how can I run windows 7 without the optical drive, On the mac mini 2011 how can I run windows 7 without the optical drive

On the mac mini 2011 how can I run windows 7pm bootcamp without an optical drive.  I watch lots of football on sop cast and other such windows based programmes but can't work out how to do it.

Actually Windows can be installed and booted from an external drive if the drive is connected eSATA (external SATA), since the drive is treated as if it's an internal HDD. I used the same method previously to dual-boot from 2 different HDD instead of partitioning.
Most PC motherboards come with them as standard so it's pretty much plug and play but I don't recall seeing a recent Mac with eSATA connectivity though, so that might not be an option for you.

    Oh, dear.
If you use PSE as your external editor for iphoto, you need to save the images back to iphoto by using Save, not Save As and not changing anything like the name or format that would bring up the Save As window. (You may need to adjust the editor prefs>saving files>on first save to save over existing.)
OR you can export the photos from iphoto to the desktop, use file>open in the editor and then change whatever you want and either import the saved image to the organizer or import it back to iphoto as a new file. What you are doing is extremely risky, particularly to the iphoto library which you may easily damage by your workflow.
I would start the organizer holding down the shift key, then create a new catalog and switch to the new one. Then try opening the editor without opening an image and see if you get any farther.
PSE and iphoto are not designed to be used as you've been doing. You are trying to write to the iphoto library from outside iphoto, which is the fastest known way to corrupt the library and lose all your photos.

No idea if Windows will do it, but you can run Windows without Bootcamp & have OSX available at the same time, which should give you all the Monitors that OSX uses.

  • Mac mini with 2 - 500GB drives running X serve

Hello - What is the best way to setup raid on a mac mini running 10.6.4x serve that does nothing but serve up netboot? Looking for suggestions..
    Thanks

    Xserve is hardware.
Xserve boxes can have in-board hardware RAID, depending on the particular system configuration.
Mac OS X Server software can boot and operate both on Xserve hardware and Mac Mini Server hardware.
Mac OS X client and Mac OS X Server both offer software-based RAID-1 capabilities.
Netboot is apparently how you're booting Mac OS X client or Mac OS X Server here; the Mac Mini Server box apparently isn't booting off its local disk(s).
If your Netboot image is set up up for and showing it is operating with mirroring once loaded into the Mac Mini Server, then you're running RAID. (Mirroring is software-based RAID-1, after all.)
Mac Mini Server boxes do not offer in-board hardware RAID capabilities, though there are various out-board hardware storage options with support for hardware RAID, in addition to the available software RAID option.
And for completeness, stay away from RAID-5; it has rotten failure modes, and it's getting more and more unreliable as the disk capacities increase. The likelihood of a secondary and catastrophic failure during a RAID rebuild increases with the capacity of the disks involved. (And you don't have enough disks to consider RAID-5 here anyway, but it's fairly common with out-board RAID.)
Also note that RAID is not an archival strategy. RAID protects against disk failures, and not against deletions, accidental operator error or malicious user activities, nor against volume or file corruptions.

If You Think iOS 7 Feels Slow Here’s How to Speed It Up
    http://osxdaily.com/2013/09/23/ios-7-slow-speed-it-up/
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Post-Install Issue - Windows Installer runs every time CRW XI R2 loads

I have XP SP3.  If I uninstall CR XI SP2 and re-install CR XI from cd, it loads perfectly - no windows installer.  When I uninstall CR XI, and re-install CR XI SP2 from the saved download on my harddrive, the Windows installer runs every time I load it; it seems to think it's never been run before.  Takes 3-8 minutes to load every time, which is completely annoying.
I have also tried downloading that full build of XI SP2 3 times - and uninstalling/reinstalling.  Makes no difference.
I know this is not a design issue, but I didn't know where else to turn.  I have been tolerating this issue for about 18 months and I can't take it any more!
    Thanks!

I believe that system has a hall sensor on it to detect when the lid is closed so it can put the system to sleep and/or disable the monitor so it can be used with an external monitor only. If the sensor is marginal or has a bad cable, it may intermittently cut the monitor on and off, and may likewise put the system to sleep. One way to check would be to plug in an external monitor and if the laptop's screen cuts off or doesn't show up, start using the trackpad and press on a non-typing key like the shift key. If the external display suddenly pops and becomes active while the laptop display remains black, it's probably a problem with the sensor or the cable/connection. You might be able to fool the sensor into kicking on and off by moving a magnet over it. It's located on the left had side of the base with the unit opened up, and right over the audio output plug.
I know of some people that put a small magnet right over the hall sensor's location so the laptop display turns off and they use the system with an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. If fooling with magnets, make sure they're small and don't get them close to the hard drive because a strong magnet can wipe them out.
I don't know if this will help you much, but it might.

My Mac Mini (Mid 2011) doesn't connect to Time Capsule in 5GHz Network. This WiFi Network don't appear in the WiFi list. What's Wrong?

Oh yes, & 5 GHz doesn't do walls very well at all.
    GHz and Network Range
The higher the frequency of a wireless signal, the shorter its range. Thus, 2.4 GHz networks cover a substantially larger range than 5 GHz wireless networks. In particular, the higher frequency wireless signals of 5 GHz networks do not penetrate solid objects nearly as well as do 2.4 GHz signals, limiting their reach inside homes.

  • Have a bash script run every time an application is opened.

    Hi,
On my Arch box I would like to have a bash script run every time a certain application is opened from the menu. I would prefer a delay of a 5 - 10 seconds after the program opens if that is possible. Could someone please let me know if and how I can achieve this?

Problem is, OP wants the "meat" of his script to run after the program, which would mean putting it after the exec. But AFAIK, anything after the exec will be ignored. You could call another script to run in the background before the exec, but that seems hackish.
