Mac Mini 2005 edition without wireless, will USB stick work?

I am looking to setup my mini (2005 edition) so that it can connect to my wireless n/w. Is it possible to use a standard USB Wireless stick and take up one of the spare usb holes or will i need to get a specific USB wireless stick instead of say "Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter"?
Many Thanks
Kinsley

Hi, (ready or a rant??)
I used to have a pre-Intel mini. I used USB sticks - I found them very unreliable. The Belkin had no instructions (for connecting to the mac) and I never managed to get it to work properly. The DLink worked but my mini crashed frequently and then we updated to 10.4 and there were untold issues and the final straw came when our network was upgraded to wireless g - as at the time the D-Link wireless g usb stick was not compatible with 10.4. So I would advise if you use a USB stick be aware that it will most certainly be unreliable at best!
Anyway, I went to "upgrade" my mini, earlier this year, (as apple say it's possible) I was told by the store staff that my mini was no-longer upgradable and most people did it when they brought their machines. (When I brought mine however, being one of the first, no upgrade kit was available in stores!!)
To cut a long boring story short... you are almost certainly unable to upgrade the very first mini's produced as they no-longer make the required "kit". However, if you have a later pre-Intel version you may well be in luck, just do it quick! (Many of the store staff don't have a clue which kit goes with which mini either!!! I don't know how many weeks I went backwards and forward - they ordered this kit, that kit oh boy....) Anyway I kicked up a huge fuss and was fortunate enough to get my old mini upgraded to an Intel with wireless installed!
So good luck!!!

What do you want to update?  The OS?  If so, what version OS are you currently running?
If that's the question all you need to do is click on "software update" ...  Be aware though that if you go past 10.4.x you lose the ability to run OS9 (classic) applications.

The original Mac Mini does have Bluetooth, see > Mac mini (original) - Technical Specifications
Of course it also depends on what wireless keyboard you mean...?

  • Mac Mini (OSX6) freezes on boot if USB cable to KVM connected

I have a Mac Mini (OS X 10.6.8) that has started freezing with a solid grey screen on boot up (i.e., no Apple logo, no spinning wheel). The work around is relatively easy: all I need to do is disconnect the USB cable running to my ATEN KVM CS1768 switch, power down, power up and then reconnect the USB cable once the Mac desktop is loaded. While this just happened three times in a row, it doesn't happen all the time. The first time it happened last summer I spent an hour on the phone with Mac support (the computer was still under warranty at that point) and the very last suggestion they made was to disconnect the USB cables before attempting to reboot. (I don't recall precisely if the problem occured when my USB peripherals-- a Mac USB keyboard and mouse-- were directly connected to the Mini rather than being routed through the KVM switch, but I *think* it did.)
If anyone has a quick answer or can point me to a prior discussion of this same (or a related) issue, I would be most grateful

    Hi,
Thanks for the response. I've been using Macs for a little over four years now but this is only the first time I have gone to the system logs (or any of the other logs available from the consolute utility).
The system log appears to be completely unhelpful. I got up this morning sometime after 6:00 a.m. and posted my first report (see above) at 6:48 a.m. (I don't have a record of the exact times of the boot up freezes.)
Following are the *entire* contents ot the system log covering this period:
    Nov 19 01:12:15 WHW-Mac-Mini loginwindow[40]: loginwindow SleepWakeCallback WILL sleep
    Nov 19 06:26:35 WHW-Mac-Mini loginwindow[40]: loginwindow SleepWakeCallback will power on, Currenttime:11/19/2012 6:26:35.019 AM - Waketime:11/19/2012 6:26:33.980 AM = Deltatime:1.038853049

    Nov 19 07:35:13 WHW-Mac-Mini login[17714]: USER_PROCESS: 17714 ttys000
I assume that one of the two successful reboots that I did during this period was probably at 6:27.
The "all messages" log has some additional information from this time frame that may be  useful:

Following this there were quite a few unsuccessful attempts to connect with my VNC server and little else that seemed noteworthy. Nothing that referenced anything to do with USB or USB peripherals.
And, of course, when I rebooted just now (in the hopes of getting a report from all of the logs corresponding to the exact time of the reboot), my Mini started just fine with no freeze up.

  • Any chance the Mac mini and the Apple TV will be combined into one unit?

Any chance the Mac mini and the Apple TV will be combined into one unit?

    No.
The Apple TV is the guts of an iPad without the screen or battery running a different build of the OS. Ie, its very cheap to make and runs an ARM processor (like all iDevices)
The Mac mini is 6x the price and is a full intel computer running the OS X.
Now, it could be that the Apple TV gets more powerful and its OS more diverse and "computer like" (apps + iCloud for example), but for now they're still coming from totally different directions.
They just happen to look alike

  • Mac mini and Snow leopard wireless problems

    Hi,
I got mac mini running snow leopard to our office from another branch, this is recently brought mac mini with snow leopard installed,
But the problem is I cannot connect to internet using wireless connections. Reading other posts i found out that there is a snow leopard issues with connecting to wireless network, but this problem seems to unique. When i connect to wireless network it shows me that, mac mini is connected to wireless network but doesn't take ip address from dhcp , its show some self assigned ip which is 169.254.226.163, but my network address are 192.168.1.*, ethernet works fines, but in wireless even when i gave manual ip , it connect but i cannot connect to internet neither i can ping to router.
I tried various methods suggests in forms, like deleting network preference files in /Library/Preferences and ~/Library/Preferences and also deleting network connection and adding new one, even updating to 10.6.3 but nothing works for me,
My macbook nicely connected to wireless and get ip, even PC connect nicely this issue is only with Mac mini
Could have suggest me how can i fixed this, Thank you very much,
    Best Regards,

Thanks DaddyPaycheck for your initial response. Before I jump onto the phone with Comcast couple of questions that I have for clarification purposes:
    1) Are you implying that I must link my blabla.com address to that static IP address through my Domain Provider? See following example:
Record Type Record Host Record Answer TTL
    A *.blablat.com >>Static IP<< 300
    2) The current IP I have been given 60.172.151.254, why is that not static or how do you know it is not static?
    3) When executing the command host in terminal for this IP address it returns the following: c-60-172-151-254.hsdl.co.comcast.net which coincidentally is the same as primary DNS it recommended during the initial configuration of the Mini Server. What does this mean? When I enter this in Safari it results in 'Safari can't connect to server'.
    4) Executing the same command for my domain name 'blabla.com' it results in my 'internal' IP address '1.0.10.9'.
Thanks in advance for any clarification you can provide,
    Tiest.

  • Mac Mini 2005 is very slow

    Hello,
My uncle gave me a free Mac Mini 2005 model when he purchased a newer model. The wireless wasn't working with it so I fixed it. From what he said the Mac was always slow, but lately my Mac has gotten a lot slower than normal. I don't know what happened but all of a sudden it just slowed right down. It always freezes and lagey. I don't know if there is something that I can do. I could possibly upgrade the RAM from 1GB to like 2 GB. But I'm not too sure if that'll fix this issue.
Thanks in advance for any help!!

Does anyone know what type of Ultra ATA hard drive I can put in a Mac mini 2005? Does it matter if it is Ultra ATA 100 or 133?

  • Boot Mac Mini w/Bluetooth without Keyboard/Mouse attachted

    Hi,
I´m trying to boot a Mac Mini with Bluetooth without any Keyboard/Mouse attachted to it.
It doesn´t work. Every time the Mac stucks at looking for Bluetooth devices.
    Running 10.4.11
    Any ideas?
    Thanks a lot,
    seb

    already tried this one!
That would have been helpful to know from the beginning so we don't waste our time with things you've already tried. What else have you already tried to troubleshoot this situation?
Maybe you need to delete that preference file, as it's clearly not working correctly? This file is not in your own user's home folder, but in the root "Library" folder in this path:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
Put that file in the Trash, restart, log back in, delete the trash, and uncheck the option again in the System Preferences. Does it stick now? Or have you tried that already too?

I own the businesses, so there are no restrictions. Even my personal page has the same problem. I've been working on FB for years with no access problems. Ironically, the problem started the day the FB IPO went public. At first, the "freeze" happened when I tried to view a photo. Now it happens virtually every time I try to do anything: view a friend's page, try to use "chat."
I'm at a loss. I would view it as a blessing, except that too many of my "friends" and family only use FB to communicate. I'm afraid that's how the world is today, and we can't turn back the clock.

  • Access the local Mac's Time Machine without its external USB HDD?

    Hello.
Is it possible to access the local Mac's Time Machine without its external USB HDD? Or is the external backup HDD required? This is assuming Mac OS X 10.8.5. I am not sure if the newer versions can do it.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Mac Mini doesn't recognize wireless keyboard

Have new Mac Mini. It has recognized bluetooth track pad but not the bluetooth keyboard that has functioned with Macbook Air previously.

Yes it is charged and I went ahead and changed out the current batteries to new ones.  When doing and going through the prompts it continues to not recognize the wireless keyboard via bluetooth.  The mac mini does recognize the wireless track pad.

  • Mac mini turns off without any reason

My Mac mini turns off without any reason. I just want to make a backup with time machine and after a while the computer doesn´t work anymore. I just see the start-screen with all the users and I had to sign with my user password. After the mac restarts, I had to start time machine again. I stopped energy-management, because I thought that might be the problem but not. Time machine should work the whole night, but I don´t want to sit the whole time next to the mac to wake him up every several minutes. What can I do?

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy
If there's a closed padlock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane, click it and enter your login password when prompted.
