Mac mini 2005

Does anyone know what type of Ultra ATA hard drive I can put in a Mac mini 2005? Does it matter if it is Ultra ATA 100 or 133?

Other World Computing has a nice hardware configurator on their website which will find appropriate hard drives for your Mini or other Mac:

  • Mac Mini 2005 is very slow

    Hello,
My uncle gave me a free Mac Mini 2005 model when he purchased a newer model. The wireless wasn't working with it so I fixed it. From what he said the Mac was always slow, but lately my Mac has gotten a lot slower than normal. I don't know what happened but all of a sudden it just slowed right down. It always freezes and lagey. I don't know if there is something that I can do. I could possibly upgrade the RAM from 1GB to like 2 GB. But I'm not too sure if that'll fix this issue.
Thanks in advance for any help!!

how do i update my mac mini (2005) edition

What do you want to update?  The OS?  If so, what version OS are you currently running?
If that's the question all you need to do is click on "software update" ...  Be aware though that if you go past 10.4.x you lose the ability to run OS9 (classic) applications.

can I hook up a wireless keyboard to my mac mini 2005 running 10.4.11? If so how?

The original Mac Mini does have Bluetooth, see > Mac mini (original) - Technical Specifications
Of course it also depends on what wireless keyboard you mean...?
For more on setting up an Apple wireless keyboard, see > Troubleshooting wireless mouse and keyboard issues
For more buying and/or using a third party wireless keyboard with a USB dongle, google the manufactures web site for compatibility and set-up information.

  • Apple and the1.5GHz Mac mini (2005)

Does anyone know why Apple hasn't officially told customers about the 1.5GHz Mac mini (G4) until they find out about it themselves by buying a Mac mini "1.42GHz" and discovering that it is actually 1.5GHz. Has Apple ever mentioned a 1.5GHz Mac mini (2005)?

    Hi Nick,
    Apple has,
Hope you appreciate this, it took a while to dig it out.
Macworld December 2005 page 26 News In Brief:
"Apple Secretly Bumps Up Mac Mini"
"In response to reports on the internet that some users who purchased a 1.42 GHz Mac Mini received a 1.5 GHz system instead. Apple confirmed that "some Mac Mini systems may contain components that slightly exceed the published specifications. There are no changes to the published specifications or part numbers." "
FYI We got a 1.5GHz Mini at the beginning of November '05

  • Facetime and iMessage on MAC MINI 2005

hey all apple lovers! I am interested in getting a 2005 mac mini g4 (used) and I was wondering if it is possible to download the iMessage and Facetime apps (Facetime with a logitech camera), or if I would need to get a software update. Is a software update possible?
I would also like to get a box or something that transfers my WIFI signal into ethernet. is there any thing like that out there? and a good external hard drive suggestion would be awsome. Thanks! swaggerwagon

it is possible to get facetime on a g4 mac mini as long as you get it upgraded to 10.5 leopard (its the highest youll get it to go) and imessage.. sorry but the closest youre getting to imessage is iChat. and as long as your webcam is mac compatible, it will work with facetime.

  • Mac Mini 2005 edition without wireless, will USB stick work?

I am looking to setup my mini (2005 edition) so that it can connect to my wireless n/w. Is it possible to use a standard USB Wireless stick and take up one of the spare usb holes or will i need to get a specific USB wireless stick instead of say "Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter"?
    Many Thanks
    Kinsley

    Hi, (ready or a rant??)
I used to have a pre-Intel mini. I used USB sticks - I found them very unreliable. The Belkin had no instructions (for connecting to the mac) and I never managed to get it to work properly. The DLink worked but my mini crashed frequently and then we updated to 10.4 and there were untold issues and the final straw came when our network was upgraded to wireless g - as at the time the D-Link wireless g usb stick was not compatible with 10.4. So I would advise if you use a USB stick be aware that it will most certainly be unreliable at best!
Anyway, I went to "upgrade" my mini, earlier this year, (as apple say it's possible) I was told by the store staff that my mini was no-longer upgradable and most people did it when they brought their machines. (When I brought mine however, being one of the first, no upgrade kit was available in stores!!)
To cut a long boring story short... you are almost certainly unable to upgrade the very first mini's produced as they no-longer make the required "kit". However, if you have a later pre-Intel version you may well be in luck, just do it quick! (Many of the store staff don't have a clue which kit goes with which mini either!!! I don't know how many weeks I went backwards and forward - they ordered this kit, that kit oh boy....) Anyway I kicked up a huge fuss and was fortunate enough to get my old mini upgraded to an Intel with wireless installed!
    So good luck!!!

  • Read Dual Layer DVDs in Mac Mini 2005

My brother has a Mac Mini that he bought in late 2005.
Can he read dual layer DVDs in this optical drive? More specifically, can he use Handbrake to rip dual layer DVDs on this Mac Mini?

Might be my ignorance speaking here, but this is the first I've ever heard of a drive that won't read a dual-layer disc. The vast majority of commercial DVD movies are in DVD9 (DL) format, and I'd be beyond surprised if your iBook wasn't able to play any of them...
I don't have my iBook yet, but I'd guess the combo drive in my Mini is the same, and I've yet to find any DVDs that won't play...

  • Intel Mac Mini Vs. G4 1.5 Mac Mini(2005)

Which one is better the mac mini that had 1.5 which was an unannounced model by apple which came with faster 5400 hard drive and 64mb of video which Im assuming isnt shared at all? The Intel one obviously has the core duo capability, but the video is really what Im asking whether it's better or the ati radeon 9200 64mb one that came with the 2005 unannounced models?

What kind of question is that!?
Why, everyone knows that neither is better. They both suck!
Just kidding....the newer machines have dedicated graphics, true.....but the faster memory and Dual Core makes up for this defficiency.
I was at the apple store in Fashion Valley (San Diego) and I had a chance to test drive a Core Duo mini.
    This little box is AMAZING!
The speed is almost up to par with the intel iMacs and all of the video I tested:
    -DVD (brought my own)
    -Quicktime
    -iMovie (brought own file)
    -Movie trailers
    ALL PLAYED PERFECTLY!
The floor model had standard configurations, so believe me...you add more RAM to the mini and there is no reason at all to even be concerned with it's video playback features.....now gaming....that's a different story.
So, either go to a store and chack it out for yourself, or simply order yours today and stop worrying about the video card. Apple would not have gone this route if they had felt that the new video option would be a downgrade from the previous model.
I know, I know, they did not have Firewire 800, modem, or Dual layer Superdrive on the MacBook Pro....but those were completely different problems.
FW800: intel not willing to do it unless it feels that more people are willing to adopt this...too few out there as of now.
DL Superdrive: not available until May.
Modem: You can buy a USB modem.

  • What type of hard drive replacement should i use to replace the hard drive in my first generation mac min 2005 model a 1103?

what type of hard drive replacement should I use to replace the hard drive on my first generation mac mini model a 1103?   G4 1.25 mhz 40 gb hd 1 gb. mem.

You'll need a 2.5" parallel ATA interface hard drive. Most are 5400RPM, forget 7200RPM drives and slower 4200rpm drives.  You don't want a serial ATA (SATA) drive, as that has a different connector and won't work.
One source I've used for drives is Newegg, and their parallel ATA hard drives are at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007605%2060000344 2&IsNodeId=1&name=IDE%20Ultra%20ATA100%20%2f%20ATA-6 .  Newegg also has many user comments about the drives. Other sources are OWC at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ (Click on ATA on the left) . Look for at least a 3 year warranty.

  • Mac Mini 2005 / Kernel Panic

My mac mini kept getting the kernel panic every time it booted up. Took it into the apple store and they said most likely the HD was going out. Of course when it was in the store it had no kernel panic problems. I ended up replacing the HD in the mini and after loading system software, etc. I get the kernel panic again! Can it be the RAM went bad? Any suggestions?

Take a look at this article and follow the suggestions: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

  • HT1338 Mac Mini 2005 runs Mac OS X, can I update  to OS X 10.6?

Do I need to run OSX 10.6 to use a wireless keyboard for this Mini Mac (2005), and if so, how can I upgrade to MAC OS X 10.6? Or can I
purchase another keyboard that will work with my present operating system (MAC OS X)?

Both the 2005 MacMinis were PowerPC computers that originally came with 10.3 or 10.4.
The highest they can go is 10.5
However that shouldn't matter. To run a wireless keyboard requires bluetooth and your MacMini may have it. I don't use a wireless keyboard myself, so I can't offer you the finer points of connecting one up, but check to see if your Mac has bluetooth.
Click on  About this Mac and read its specifications.
If you just need another keyboard, I'd stick with a wired USB one. However that may require trying to find one secondhand. If you can locate a computer swap meeting in your area, maybe that will offer you the chance to pick one up there.
Also a windows keyboard will probably work except for some of the function keys along the top.

  • 2005 Mac Mini, can this connect this wirelessly to my home network as an iTunes server

I have acquired a 2005 Mac Mini which appears to need direct cable connection to my router to access the internet.  Is there a way around this that  I can modify to access my home network wirelessly so I can use this as a stable location for my itunes library rather than my macbook pro.  The Mac mini is located in a room upstairs but my router is situated in the lounge alongside my Apple TV.  I want to try and get the mac mini to be the storage location for itunes that my apple tv will use.
Would the addition of an airport express or the like be a solution or am I barking up the wrong tree.  Due to the age, is it likely that the mac mini can be used as a mini desktop only rather than as a file server?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, as you have probably gathered, I am an apple novice

    Per this
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_Mini
an internal wifi card was optional.
You need a USN wifi stict that is compatible with your Mac. This one shuld work

    It says:
Supports Windows , ME, 2000, XP, vista , windows 7,MAC OS 10.X, Linux
Just mak sure that what yo get works with OSX 10.4.11 or 10.5.8. Your G4 Mini can only go to 10.5.8
