Mac Mini 2009 massive slow down but only even 4-5 mins?!?

I have a issue where I get the spinning beach ball of death and it lasts for about 20-30 secs, but I get this every 4-5 mins
I have used CleanMyMac to remove all the crap and run all the cleaning and maintence tasks on Onyx to clear the computer up; to be fair it is kept very clean most of the time anyway.
I have checked the hard drive and corrected all permissions as well as verifying the drive itself.
I have run a Memtest 2 pass on the RAM and had no errors.
Both of these were done in single user mode from boot using the Terminal.
I am running a 2009 Mac Mini with a 2.6 Core2Duo, 6Ghz RAM, 160GB SSD drive. It is plugged in via the mini display port to an HD Tv and connected through the optical port to an amp for audio. I am using the wireless bluetooth Mac keyboard and Magic Mouse.
Any suggestions would be great

Thanks for the response by I have already gone through these processes and determined that there is no application or process filling the CPU cycles or RAM and that I have adiquete drive space and resources to do what I need to do.
I t seems to happen on everything; be it opening Finder or scrolling on a webpage or just clikcing the Bluetooth icon at the top of the screen. Just every few minutes I get the beachball. I can move the beachball around but not click anything or do anything. Then after 20 secs or so it is back to normal and as fast as ever.
However, 4 or 5 mins later  ....

  • Can the wireless card in my mac wear out and slow down internet connection??

can the wireless card in my mac wear out and slow down internet connection??

Yes the WiFi card can wear out but not what you would really call wearing out like a pair of pants do. It can start to fail causing the connection between your computer and your Wifi router to slow down, IE transmit and receive less data in a given time period. And then it will fail completely.
But as to your internet connection being affected by a failing WiFi card no that can't happen.
If you turn the WiFi off and connect the computer to your router with an Ethernet cable does your internet browsing and downloading speed increase? If it does then there may be something wrong with the WiFi card in your computer or the WiFi section of your router. Hard to say which.
If after connecting the computer to your router with an Ethernet cable and your speeds do not increase then it is a problem with the router or on your ISPs end.

  • My Firefox 20 seems to not shut down but only restart. Also, rather than my home page, the last pages visited appear.

It's as if Firefox 20.0 never shuts down but only restarts.
Even when I close Firefox 20.0 by clicking the X button on the top right or use "exit," when I open Firefox, it acts the same as if I'd used "restart," namely the tabs don't load until I click on them. Furthermore, the 4 pages I use as my home pages aren't there but rather whatever pages I had up when I last closed my browser.
I have tried creating a new profile, which worked ONE TIME. Then, it went back to my problem.
I have used "restore" to go back to a time before the problem started but that hasn't worked.
I removed the addon I had downloaded in that time period but that didn't help, either.
Thank you for any help you can give. I know you're all volunteers and your time is important.

Does it seem like that Firefox is crashing? Try checking if there are any crash reports by going to about:crashes in your browser. Alternatively you can try safe mode as outlined below:
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''

  • Mac Mini very slow at 4 gig memory, upgrade to 16 still slows down but takes a longer time

I bought a Mac mini a year ago. With an i7 and i terabyte and it cam with only 4 gig of ram. It worked fine for a while and i installed some apps then it started to get very slow. seeing the colorful "hourglass " turn round and round quite a few times. Then i went to the activity monitor where it told me that the memory used was about 3.89 gigs. I purchased a memory cleaner app from thr app store which helped a bit.
Today i upgraded to 16 gig memory and bang my computer ripped. The activity manager said i was using 6 gigs of ram and had 9.8 remaining.
after being on the internet for a couple of hours and using Firefox with about ten tabs open the computer started to get very slow again.
I checked the activity manager and it read 6 gigs used and the cash read a whopping 9 gigs. Did not think i would need the memory cleaner any more but after doing a clean it worked better.
Why did i get a whopping 9 gigs in the cash ? which is what it read after my computer slowed down again.

You may want to post in the Mac Mini forum, this is the iMac forum. If you would like me to I will ask the moderator to move the thread.

  • My Mac book pro has the end of a earphone stuck to it. After this I updated to maverick, and this massively slowed down my computer. Now my laptop is switching on and logging in just fine, but after logging in the screen goes white. What can the reason be?

At first my laptop was fine after the earphone end got stuck in. Soon it started getting slower, and suddenly it stopped switching on. The people in the service station said that it wAs because the hard disk drive was corrupted. I came back home, and immediately it stopped working again. This time they said it was because of water spill. They changed the entire key board and then it started working for a while. Later I updated to maverick and that slowed down my computer. Once, I switched on my laptop, logged in, and then the screen went white. When we took it to the service center they said they will need to replace the hard disk. I am not sure what I should do. Any suggestions?

Liquid damage from water spill is progressive, unfortunately.
    Best.

  • Massive slow down with older WRT54GL

So I've been using the router for a couple years now and it has always been fine and provided me a nice connection. I am using roadrunner cable internet. Until recently I haven't had any problems getting good speeds wirelessly and wired throughout my house. Now I get super slow connections in all instances. Is my router simply too old or are my settings mucked up. I know that I haven't set up my security correctly on the modem and need advice on how to do so but I don't believe that is the cause of the slow down. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Try to adjust the settings on your router..Open the setup page and under the Wireless tab,Change the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Click on Advanced Wireless Settings...Change the Beacon Interval to 50,Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...Under the setup tab,Change the MTU to 1300 and click on save settings..Power cycle the router and check..
If that does not resolve the problem then, upgrade the router's firmware and configure the router from scratch.

  • Query works great in 9i, but on 10g massive slow down.

    Hi,
I am facing some trouble when running a query in 10g and i don't know why.It is currently working fine in 9i.
    The query is like this:
    delete from x
    where (a,b,c,d,e,f) in (select a,b,c,d,e,f
    from y
    where site='AMERICA'
    and appli='ORACLE')
    and site='AMERICA'
    and appli='ORACLE'
y table has 117573 entries for the site, appli combination
and x table has 117621 records for the site appli combination
It executes in 28 secs in 9i but on 10g it goes on for hours.
Stats have been calculated on the table and the tables are partitioned on site and appli combination
The explain plan shows an index range scan on the primary key index.
I tried changing the query to use exists instead of in, but it did not help.
Could someone help me with this please?

  • Wired Mac on Airport Extreme slowing down Wireless network?

I have an Airport Extreme 802.11n and a MacBook Pro 15" (unibody). I recently added a MacMini Core 2 duo as an iTunes server, and since it didn't have 802.11n (it's an older one), I shut off the WiFi and ethernet cable'd it to my Airport Extreme. It works great; I can see the Mini in Shared devices from the MacBook Pro, share the screen, and my Apple TV syncs beautifully as well.
Then today I noticed that the internet connection on my laptop was really slow. After some chasing I realized that the same speed tests from http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ ran on the ethernet-Mini vs the WiFi-MacBook Pro were radically different. At any given time, the speed on the MacBook Pro was as low as 25% the speed on the Mini… sometimes even worse!
I discovered that if I shut down the Mini, the MacBook Pro speed increases. Not to the same point as the Mini, but I can attribute some loss to just being on WiFi and only getting about 60% signal strength (according to iStumbler -- even though the mac WiFi signal strength shows full bars… anyway). But in the past (before the Mini was added) I've run those speedtests and seen results like I'm seeing now only on the Mini.
So why would this tethered Mac be causing such a slowdown?
I'm about to upgrade to the new Time Capsule with separate 802.11 b/g and n antennas but would like to understand this problem before I make that upgrade. Something else feels wrong to me.
btw I did recently upgrade to the 7.4.1 firmware (at the same time I did the Mini addition… poor science, I know), and so I tried reverting it back to 7.3.2 to see if that made any difference, and it did not.

So I started poking around a bit more this morning, and ended up doing a slew of tests. A LOT of tests. I tested two different portables and the Mini, tested with the Mini off and on, and tested with Safari 3 or 4 (depending on what was on each system) and Firefox 3. I then tested the portable plugged directly into the wire.
I ran each test three times and averaged them.
There are some very interesting results.
Tests with Mini on vs. Min off makes a negligible difference on average on Safari. However Firefox performance consistently went down with the Mini off.
But here's the big shocker – performance of any wired computer was between three and TEN (!!!!) times that of the wireless! This is unbelievable.
Worth noting I was sure to disable all other wifi devices on the network, even the other portable, when performing the tests. Apple TV and iPhones were all powered down during these tests.
All my test results are visible here on iWork.com here: http://bit.ly/KYGTj (I think anyone can log in using an apple ID, if not then email me or post your email address here and I'll add you to the list)
Feel free to download the Numbers files and perform your own comparison charts.

  • Movie slows down, but the sound still ok....

    HELP!
The first part of a movie I completed plays sluggishly, choppy but the sound is playing fine. As I move it towards the end of the movie, that part is playing smoothly. When I opened it, I usually drag the playhead(?) up and down the timeline to quickly advance to a part I want to see. Maybe I altered something? Is there a way to adjust a frames per second or something? Please help!

    Hi Ramon
Do You have a lot of audio clips in this movie (> 100) - or -
    Where do You store Your:
    - Mac OS + QT
    - iMovie program
    - iMovie movie project
OK I saw that You have an iMac G4. But I just reason. And I don't know
what kind of hard disk that-one has. 4800 rpm or faster ?
When stuttering - it sometimes depends on the hard disk performances.
eg. using a miniMac + storing all on the internal hd + > 100 audio-clips
will demand a lot of the hd and in most of the miniMacs there are a rather
    slow one.
Using external hard disks can be even more problematic. I did:
use an ext FW hd with all on it = lots of problems and mainly audio sync troubles.
    - One can export out the audio as on .aiff file then use this to replace all
audio-clips to make things roll more even. 100 clips becomes 1 clip.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Massive slow-down issues

My MBP is about 18 months old now. But in the last week or so it has been having huge issues with speed. I've got enough hard drive space free, and there's nothing in the activity monitor taking up power. I honestly can't find whats wrong. Disk verify comes back with all ok, and even starting up takes almost 5 minutes! Even with nothing plugged into it. Also, annoyingly, Spore is taking almost 5 minutes to even get to the opening movie. And then, invariably, it crashes a few minutes later. This has also only just started to happen.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Chris

    Hi e3gle;
If you put the install media for your Mac into the optical drive and hold down the "D" key that will invoke the AHT. This can test all of the hardware in your Mac including RAM.

  • Massive slow down after update

Hi, I have Nokia n95-1 and my problem is that today I've updated my firmware from 30.0.015 to 31.0.017 and encountered massive slowdown of phone. If I press menu button I must wait 20sec, others option works even slower. I have newest pcsuite, updater and drivers. My phone is unusable now as I can even see how particular parts of UI are drawn on screen. Any suggestions?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Try to find in this directory. Assuming that you are using Windows XP
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nokia\Nokia Service Layer\A
Once you find this directory, delete all the files in it & close Windows Explorer. Connect your phone and run NSU. The standard GUI will appear to update your software but this time, NSU will re-download your firmware from NSU servers.
I suspected that the firmware that you first downloaded got some CRC or any errors during downloading and even after you re-flashed for second or third times, NSU still using the 'corrupted' firmware that you previously downloaded in that directory.
Do remember to backup all your data/contacts before updating the firmware....

  • Recently upgraded my macbook pro 13 late 2009 to an ssd but only getting a quarter of the speed

Hi, i recently upgraded my macbook pro 13 inch to a OCZ VERTEX 3 240gb ssd. The drive is supposed to be able to have write speeds of 500mb/s and read speeds of up to 550 mb/s but when i run a speed test on the disk im only getting a max write speed of around 105 mb/s, and read speed of 137mb/s ish, now the negotiated speed is only 1.5gb/s I have trim enabled, and i have tried changing the link speed but with no luck. The drive is rated for 6gb/s also. The drive is not in the hard drive bay because my hard drive cable is broken, i have it in the optical bay right now, could someone please help me or tell me how to make the drive at least go up to sata 3 speeds,

The 2009 MBPs were built with a very cheaply made HDD to LB cable. So I bet if you change that cable you will see more speed from that SSD.
