Mac Mini 2010 - RAM expansion fails

Been trying all morning to expand the memory of my 2010 Mac Mini from 2GB to 4GB
Picked up 2x2GB ADATA SO-DIMM modules, 1333Mhz.
As soon as I put both in at the same time the machine simply will not boot. Putting one of the modules in either slot works fine for 2GB of RAM (tried all 4 possible combinations) and OSX reports the modules running at 1333Mhz just fine.
Mixing either one of the new modules with either one of the old works fine in all possible combinations as well for 3GB total RAM reported by OSX as running at 1066Mhz which makes sense as the Samsung modules it shipped with are 1066Mhz modules.
So I'm stumped, the modules are fine, they work fine in the Mini they just won't work together at the same time.

I'm sure the rated speed of the modules doesn't make a difference in Core2Duo based machines as the chipset is the one setting the speed and not the module itself. That 1333Mhz is simply what ADATA believes is the maximum it can reliably run at. When provided with a single 1333Mhz capable SO-DIMM the Mac Mini happily runs it at 1333Mhz as well which makes me suspect the 1066Mhz RAM it is shipped with is solely out of financial consideration.
ADATA itself claims on it's this specific module has been tested with all Apple products
Seems others are having the same problem with different sets of memory. One module working fine but both not. Unless Apple releases a firmware update to fix these incompatibilities I think it's a dead end. The ADATA modules moved on to the iMac where the are working fine and I got a kit of OCZ 4Gb 1333Mhz SO-DIMM's that work fine in the Mac Mini.
Thanks for the help so far.

    HDD WD 1To (upgrade 2013)

At the store they reinstall it with snow leopard, not mountain lion.

My mac mini 2010 (2.4 Ghz, 8GB ram) is running really very slow after updating to Mavericks.
Clearly OneDrive is a pain... but had it running on ML as well, and though it is a memory and CPU hog, it never really slowed down the system.

  • Mac Mini 2010 and Windows 7

    Hello All,
I searched the forums to see if my question had already been answered, but I couldn't find it. My apologies in advance if this, in fact, is solved. I am having some issues with my installation of Windows 7 on my Mac Mini 2010 model 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo. I used boot camp to create a partition, installed windows 7 64 bit from a copy that I bought from school, and it did install.
    Problem 1
The problem that I am having is that the operating system states that 4GB of RAM is available and 3.5GB is usable. I currently have 8GB installed(Not factory, I purchased third party) and it reads fine in Mac OS X. Does anyone else have this problem or a similar one?
    Problem 2
The screen will not expand fully in Windows 7. I have an ASUS 21.5in HD screen that will display up to 1080p connected to the HDMI connection on my mac. When I boot up, the screen will display in a smaller size(about 3/4 the size of the screen) while the rest of the screen is black.
    What have I tried?
I have updated to the latest boot camp package on the Apple website to make sure I have the latest drivers for my NVIDIA GeForce 320M card.
I have tried playing with the resolution in Windows 7 to display the maximum possible resolution
I have made sure to install all Windows 7 updates.
    Problem 3
I don't have full access to the monitor menu. When I touch the menu button, I can only change the brightness, sharpness, and that is it. I can't do anything about expanding the screen, moving the screen left or right, etc.(If I did have these options, then problem #2 would be solved).
    Nothing has worked.
    What do I think...
I am thinking that it has something do with the fact that I am running the screen from the HDMI, although I don't really know why. It could also be the monitor. I could try to purchase the Mini Display Port adapter to see if that offers a better resolution, more freedom with my monitor, etc. This would fix problem 2 and 3. I did order a 24" Apple Cinema Display which will be here in a few days. If everything works with that, then I guess I wouldn't have a problem anymore, but I think it should still work with my existing monitor.
As for the first problem, I am at a loss. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks for reading.

I completely agree with your assessment for Problem #1, but here we have it.
I will try re-installing and will also double check with the drivers for the monitor. Thanks for the advice. If all else fails, I will just use parallels.

  • Problem upgrading memory of a mac mini 2010

I have a Mac mini 2010 with these memories
    2 x 1GB PC2-5300 667MHz Ram
    http://i.imgur.com/L25KW0q.jpg
I bought a memoir of Ebay and do not work.
Insert 2 modules and makes strange beeps on boot, if I put up does nothing starts without beeping and not send video signal and if I put the form below makes the odd beep.
    They are:
    RAM-DDR3-Macbook-pro-mid-02.02.2012-GB-4GB-mt8jtf25664hz-1g6m1
    It is this: http://imgur.com/DFV7s99
    2GB 1RX8 PC3-12800S

Turns out I tried i7 laptop with (DDR3, 10600, 1333-MHz) and worked and this is (12800 DDR3-1600) art of a MacBook Pro 2012 ...and does not work ...
    Can anything be done?
Perhaps better than store or sell ...
My laptop has Windows 8Gb and may put them at Mac and these 4Gb the laptop i7, but maybe worse.

  • Upgrade Mac Mini 2010 to SSD, have you tried this?

Hi all, and this is my first discussion thread.
I'm currently running my Mac Mini 2010 with a SATA Male to Female cable and ext. SATA power on a WD VelociRaptor 150GB.
The solution isn't really elegant i feel and it generates alot of heat from the drive and some extra noise when loading heavy applications eg. parallels desktop.
I've even up the ram to the max 8GB as well and everything seems zippy so far.
Earlier there are alot of talk about SSDs requiring TRIM on the operating system and as what we know Mac OS X Leopard
does not have integrated TRIM support.
So i'm basically looking at SSD candidates that will:
    - run the power provided by the Mac Mini's (5V) integrated PSU
    - don't require TRIM support to manage garbage collection on the hardware level.
So far, i've only 2 candidates:
    - Crucial RealSSD
    - Kingston V100+
Which one will you shell out for and why?
    Additional question:
    - If i remove the superdrive on my mac mini, can i get a external USB superdrive? is there such a thing at all?

theres no reason why it should not work, plug in the HDMI cable, select the Source input on LCD(HDMI 1/2), if still no picture on the Mini open System Pref>Display : Resolution> it should show 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p and other lower resolutions, just select 1080p and to your right select 60hz. Hope this helps.

  • Mac Mini 2010 Hardware Test w/ Lion

I have a mac mini 2010 that came with snow leopard installed. I recently upgraded to Lion, however I need to do the Apple hardware test. When I attempt to load the hardware test by holding down the D key when booting the Mac Mini the hardware test fails to load. What do I need to do to load the Hardware test?

How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer.  After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears.  Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours.  If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
    Some "common" error indicators:
    SNS - sensor error
    MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
    MOT - fan error

  • Is mac mini 2010 good enough for iphone app development?

I'm planning to get a Mac Mini 2010, with 4GB of ram instead of the default basic 2GB. I'm getting it to do iphone app development. Is this computer going to be sufficient? Are there any caveats I should be aware of?
    Thanks!

    Hi
I got exactly that setup for exactly that purpose... even the 4GB upgrade Even without the ram upgrade it should still be fine for iPhone app development. I've not run into any problems with mine.
I got my ram upgrade because I want to run Windows inside MacOS using virtualization software - that kinda thing requires lots of ram.
You might want to wait two days though before you buy. Apple has an event on Wednesday (October 20th) and it looks like there will be a lot of focus on Mac, possibly some hardware upgrades and a new version of MacOS.
    Regards
    Eon

  • Reinstalled maverick on Mac mini 2010 now can't restore files from previous backups

Reinstalled maverick on Mac mini 2010 now can't restore files from previous backups can't even roll back to previous setup

    This is typical Mavericks.
Was the old backup taken from Mavericks install?
Did you already start TM from the new install and thus totally foul up and corrupt your old backup?
You will need to try migrate assistant.. and if that fails you will need to manually pull your files from the old backup if you can still access them.

  • Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D adapter works with Mac Mini 2010?

    Hi,
I would like to connect my Mac Mini (2010 edition) to both my Samsung PX2370 display and my LCD TV. Currently, I only have the Samsung display connected through the included HDMI-to-DVI adapter, but I'd like to use the HDMI output to directly connect my LCD TV, and connect the Samsung display by using a Mini DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter, like the one that is for sale at the Apple Online Store. Such adapter should work without trouble with any MAc computer that has a mini DisplayPort output, including the Mac Mini, right?
Thanks in advance for your support.

You're right, but I forgot to mention that the Samsung display is just an LCD monitor, so I don´t really need to get audio output for both connections
Currently, I use an HDMI-to-DVI adapter to connect the Samsung monitor, but I'd like to use the HDMI output to connect my LCD TV instead (and probably a home theater system in the future), and use the Mini DisplayPort output for the monitor, so that I can have a dual-display setup.
I asked this question, because I read the description for the Mini DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter in the Mexico Apple Store web page, and that description tells that only Macbooks support the adapter. In the US Apple Store page, it does tell that the adapter is supported by any Apple computer with a Mini DP connection, so I just wanted to confirm which description is true, to avoid confusions.
Anyway, I appreciate that you took the time to respond... Regards!!

  • Audio Output from Mac Mini 2010

    Hello -
I purchased a mac mini 2010 this weekend for use as a home theater PC. I've got it connected to an Onkyo tx-sr604 a/v receiver via HDMI. I then pass the HDMI signal from the Onkyo to my hdtv, so I think it just passes through. For audio, I use a surround sound system. And, in case it matters, I have a second tv connected via the DVI output on the mini.
The Onkyo indicates that the audio input signal on the HDMI is PCM Multichannel. When I play movies (e.g., Netfix or DVD) or music (e.g., pandora) on the mini, I don't get any sound on the center channel in multi-channel mode. In direct mode, I only get sound in the front left and right speakers. I'd like to have normal surround sound.
Is there not a way to get 5.1 surround sound from the mini? Or, am I missing a set up or something? If I connect my receiver to the mini with the digital audio output, will I then receive digital audio?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Mike it is my understanding that if you want 5.1 Surround sound that you must connect the mini directly to the SS system and not pass the audio signal through another device.
